EDITOR’S REPORT Dear Members, Not a lot to report in this first issue of the Echo. I just like to thank everyone who sent cards (and emails) with best wishes for me and my family! It made me feel really happy! Please take note of page 6 as it tells you of the coming events. If you like to come along, please, don’t forget to ring Annie to book. We notice at most of the organised events that there are always people who just come along in the presumption ‘that it will be all right’. And sometimes it is, but very often it causes little hick-ups in the kitchen (catering). Another reason for booking is the following: Last year, for instance, we organised a film afternoon (with afternoontea prepaired in advance). Eight (yes, 8) committee members arrived to ‘lovingly’ look after the members. And would you believe it? Only four (4) people turned up to watch the film and partake of the afternoon-tea. Therefore please book in advance. Not enough interest: We just cancel the event! But at least we know what to expect. The committee had not decided which film was going to be shown at time of the Echo going to the printers. But Annie will tell you the title of this Dutch film at the time you make your telephone booking, I promise! Yoka

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello everyone. How are you all? I have been told by my committee that the BBQ went well and that everybody enjoyed themselves thoroughly. So I don’t feel too bad to have being having a marvellous time with my husband and children. We took a trip down south during these holidays. We travelled from Christchurch to Dunedin, where Dave surprised me by fixing the air conditioning in the car as a anniversary present. He had to lay in the mud for over an hour to get it done. He told me afterwards that this was true love! While in Dunedin we visited the Cadbury Chocolate Factory. We walked (climbed) Baldwin Street, the world’s steepest street and saw the albatross colony. Then on to Blaclutha to see the bridge. To Gore for a stop-over and then on to Te Anau and Lake Cascade. From there we could get a shorter trip into Milford Sound to start a lovely cruise which we managed to arrive just in time for. Had a look at the Homer Tunnel. Then back to Te Anau and through Queens Town before staying in Cromwell for 2 nights. Dave caught up with old soccer buddies while the kids and I went to Puzzling World, from there to Lake Ruataniwha for a night before heading home. Whew!!!!!! That was a trip and a half. We are so lucky to have such stunning scenery and lots to do in this wonderful country. I, for one, am so glad my parents chose to come here a long time ago! I wish you all the very best for 2016 ! Voor onze nieuwe, wederom verfrissende, show dit jaar zoeken we MANNEN als partners voor de jongere vrouwen. COMING EVENTS
First of all on behalf of the Entertainment Team I like to wish you all a very happy new year. 2015, the year that was, saw some very succesfull NSC events. One of which was a kind of private affair: One of our two St Nicholasses (Yes, we have a spare one!) visited the Dutch residents in the Lady Isaac Retirement Village. The last few years St Nick takes time out of his very busy schedule to amuse the people in Lady Isaac’s. Parcel Pete accompanies him. This visit is much appreciated by the residents, as you can imagine!

The meat was as usual cooked to perfection by Janice and Arie Geerlofs. What would we do without these famous BBQ chefs? Olga and Jose made really ‘yummie’ trifles and the other members of the entertainment team did their utmost to make the event a memorable one! Thank you,Team!
On Sunday, 21 February at 1.30 pm a Dutch movie will be shown at the Everglades. Afternoon tea will be served, bookings are essential, ring Annie at 383 1594 before 15 February. The reason for bookings are for catering purposes and so that we can inform you of the title of the film.

NEERLANDIA CHOIR CHRISTCHURCH Allereerst wil ik iedereen een heel goed en gezond nieuwjaar toewensen. Laten we hopen dat alles goed gaat met ons Koor! En mocht dat niet lukken dan wens ik dat we er het beste van weten te maken! Niet de omstandigheden maken een mens gelukkig, maar de wijze waarop men met de omstandigheden omgaat! Het Koor houdt vast aan een stuk Hollandse cultuur met het Nederlands Kerstconcert. Voor degenen die het gemist hebben wil ik melden dat het weer een succes was! Naast de liederen die het Koor ten gehore bracht speelden Jonty en Benny Schmidt o.a. een ‘Christmas Music Medley’ op hobo en klarinet. Dat werd erg gewaardeerd. Het verhaal dat Petra Lewis vertelde over een jongetje dat zijn vader om een uur van zijn tijd vroeg en hem daarvoor $25 wilde betalen, vond ik heel toepasselijk in deze tijd. De mensen zijn te druk en maken zich te druk. De collecte, die gehouden werd tijdens het concert, bracht $465.00 op, een mooi bedrag, waarvoor we iedereen hartelijk willen bedanken. Het werd gedoneerd aan de Christchurch Resettlement Services, een organisatie die vluchtelingen en emigranten helpt als ze hun nieuwe leven in Nieuw-Zeeland beginnen. De donatie was welkom. Er is nooit genoeg geld om alles te bekostigen! Voor het Koor verwachten we een goed jaar. We houden ons op het moment bezig met een selectie van nieuwe muziek. KLAVERJAS CLUB ‘ONS GENOEGEN’ Het is elk jaar precies het zelfde: Je kijkt maanden naar een paar weken vakantie uit en dan, voordat je het weet, is het al weer voorbij. Maarja, we zullen maar denken dat dat een teken is dat je er van genoten hebt! En zo beginnen we weer met goede moed aan het nieuwe jaar en kijken uit naar wat 2016 ons brengen zal. “Ons Genoegen” begint weer 19 januari. Dus tegen de tijd dat jullie de februari Echo ontvangen draaien we al weer op volle toeren. Maar nu nog even een verslag van wat er gebeurde net voordat mijn computer de geest gaf. 20 october 2015: 1) Mien van Lieshout, 5276 punten; 2) Thea Beulink, 5264 punten; 3) Arie Middelkoop, 5174 punten 24 october (Labour Weekend) werd er een ‘card drive’ gehouden. Er waren 24 deelnemers en een controleur, de man, die alles nog eens over rekende. De uitslagen waren als volgt: 1) Arda Hogendoorn, 8540 punten; 2) Gerard Kuppevelt, 8285; 3) Lenie Jansen, 8256 punten Ik weet wel dat ik het steeds herhaal, maar het was weer als van ouds: erg gezellig en alles liep gesmeerd! 3 november: 1) Lenie Nelis, 5354 punten; 2) Piet Bohm, 5223 punten; 3) Anna Fekkes, 5186 punten 17 november: 1) Emmy Nederpelt, 5620 punten; 2) Piet Bohm, 5392 punten; 3) Truss Nijssen, 5247 punten. 8 december gingen we met z’n allen voor lunch naar de Sequoia en dat was op die dag een stuk rustiger dan op een zaterdag. Er waren 43 gasten, leden met aanhang. Het was fijn om ook Tilly Bergenhenegouwe en Mimi Tabak weer eens in ons midden te hebben. Na de lunch direct naar huis, dat was een beetje anders dan we gewend waren maar daar was een rede voor. Op 15 november vond de grote jaar prijs uitreiking plaats. Eerst werden er twee spelletjes kaart gespeeld , dat gaf het comite de tijd om de lunch (hot savouries) en wat er verder nog bij kwam, te organiseren. Daarna werden de winnaars bekend gemaakt: Kampioen van het jaar 2015: Hermien van Lieshout, 106421 punten; 2) Ans van Vuuren, 105445 punten; 3) Theo van Vuuren, 104750 punten; 4) Koos Nieuwkerk, 104319 punten; 5) Arda Hogendoorn, 104209 punten; 6) Greet Akkerman, 104207 punten; 7) Thea Beulink, 104121 punten; 8) Henk Ritstier, 104102 punten; 9) Wim de Winter, 104048 punten, 10) Bill Nunnink, 104035 punten. De meeste pitten, 32, werden gehaald door Bill Nunnink; 2) Hermien Lieshout, 29; 3) Agnes Stolp, 26. Wij allen feliciteren de winnaars. Er waren ook nog kerst cadeautjes voor allen maar die werden, door alle drukte, vergeten om uitgedeeld te worden. Een troost was: dat er iets was om naar uit te kijken is op 19 januari! De leden van “Ons Genoegen” wensen ieder een gezond en gelukkig nieuw jaar en veel plezier met het spel van het leven! Wim
YOUTH OF YESTERDAY
The Youth of Yesterday celebrated the Break-Up of 2015 with a nice Chinese meal. A lovely glass of wine or fruit juice to start and icecream and fruit salad afterwards. Just like the Klaverjas Club the Christmas presents were totally forgotten. They were handed out a week later which was just as well! Our Friday gatherings will commence again on 22 January 2016. It is a small world after all! (A story from John Schoolderman as told to Sarah Hadfield)
Hello, my name is John Schoolderman. I was born in a town called Velp near the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands. Velp is a pretty town near the Veluwe, which is a forestrich ridge of hills in the province of Gelderland. It features woodlands, heath and small lakes. My sister and I spent many hours in this beautiful area, summer and winter just walking or playing. We, that is my father, mother, my sister and I lived in a house near the railway line. Every morning at the exact time of 8am, the Pullman train from Amsterdam to Paris went past our house and that meant it was time for us children to start the walk to school, which was approximately 1km away. There were 2 schools a primary and secondary school, the first one was called Oranje and the second the Nassau School. During the years 19401945 the Netherlands were occupied by the Germans and the name Oranje (orange) was too much of a reference to the Dutch Royal family so the school’s name had to be dropped and both schools were known in the war years as the Nassau schools. The original Oranje primary school is now gone. Just before World War II, a tragedy befall our family: my father mysteriously died in Germany. I am not sure what happened exactly as I was only 9 years and my sister 12 years old. During the war my mother became very ill and she died. I went to live with an aunt and an uncle, who I did not like. My aunt was a lovely lady though and she looked after me very well. My aunt lived in Velp at 3 Caspar Fagelstraat”. Next door, at number 1, lived a lovely family by the name of Wijnveld, with 4 children, three boys and one girl. The oldest boy was named Derik and we became great friends to this day. At number 5 lived a family by the name of Raau, they had 2 daughters. Mr Raau was my best friend, if I was depressed I would go to him and we would go sit in a small gardenshed; he was like a Dad to me. We would talk about anything including the war, the hunger winter and, of course, voetbal (football). In hindsight I think Caspar Fagelstraat looked similar to Coronation Street on TV. As children we all played together, including the girls, and we did things we were not allowed to do of course! One of our favourite games was, as we called it in Dutch “Belletje Trekken” (ringing the doorbell). We would run fast to a front door, press the bell then run for our lives! In another street lived a member of the NSB (National Socialist Organisation) Members were a highly demanding fascist movement, in other words “Nazi lovers”. Although this member was sympathetic to the Germans he never betrayed the Jewish people or anybody of the underground resistance However, as kids we would sing nasty songs when we passed his house. O NSB’er, jij hebt ons land verraden

Of course as soon as they opened the door we sprinted off, as you can imagine! Sadly Derik’s sister at number 1 got badly injured by flying shrapnel in 1944, in fact their house was totally destroyed and they could not live there anymore. Thankfully the house were I lived was spared. Then Joke, one on the two girls at number 5 was also hurt by a piece of shrapnel, which was embedded in her eye. When she visited us in Christchurch, many years later, the marks on her face were still visible. When I turned 16 I left Velp to study and work in Aalsmeer as I wanted to be a landscape gardener. However, when I was 18 and a half the Dutch Army called me up to join as was compulsory in those days.Soon after 3 months training I was sent to West New Guinea to serve for approximately 2 years. After I finished my service I immigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand. In those days we, as immigrants , were called ‘aliens’ and had to have our ‘alien’ book with us at all times as form of ID. It made us feel as if we came from another planet. All immigrants worked very hard as we wanted to quickly own a piece of land and our own house. I started to grow cut-flowers and fruit on my plot of land in the Marshland area. Strawberries and raspberries were very popular and we sold them on the road side. In those days we could pick 3 to 4 dozen punnets of fruit and place them on a small counter. Then we would go away to pick some more fruit. When we returned the punnets would be gone and the money left underneath a brick! This does not happen so much now, only here and there you still find roadside stalls with a so called ‘honesty box’! While I was in New Guinea in the depths of the jungle I never received a letter from anybody. But strangely as soon as I settled in New Zealand I received lots of letters of people who wanted to immigrate to New Zealand. One day I received such a letter from my friend Derik of number 1 Caspar Fagelstraat and I gladly assisted him with his migration plans to New Zealand. One day while I was selling fruit a family came along on their pushbikes - a mother, father and three children. They stopped to admire the windmill in our garden. I had built the mill myself, it was about 30 ft high. The lady asked me if my name was John Schoolderman, I could tell by her accent that she was Dutch. Then she asked if I recognised her, I had no idea as I met so many people. She asked me to take a good look and said: “I am Ans Raau from number 5 Caspar Fagelstraat en this is my husband Dick te Groen also from Velp.” I was so amazed how they came to New Zealand. They could have chosen Australia, South Africa or Canada. Or I could have chosen to go to any of these places. My sister had left for America. Yet unbeknown to me my neighbours from Velp had ended up in Christchurch, just like me. Yes, indeed it is a small world! February 2016

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS EMBASSY New requirements for Dutch passport application 23 September 2015
Have you lived in NZ for more than 5 years? As of 15 October 2015 you are required to prove that you have not become a New Zealand citizen when applying for a Dutch passport. As a Dutch national with a residents permit you can acquire New Zealand citizenship by grant if you have lived in NZ for at least the last 5 years and had the right to be in NZ indefinitely the whole time. There is no system in place in New Zealand to cancel your existing resident visa when you become a NZ citizen. The Department of Internal Affairs and Immigration New Zealand do not share information regarding New Zealand Citizenship. Only when you re-apply for a residency permit after you have become a NZ citizen you will receive an endorsement in your Dutch passport. Because of this, the Embassy cannot determine if a person has become a NZ citizen or not, since this may have consequences for your Dutch citizenship. Therefore you are now required to prove you have not become a NZ citizen if you have lived in NZ for more than 5 years. You can prove this with an authenticated Letter of Denial.
