Leesopdrachten n.a.v. het hoorcollege ‘Representatievormen’ IUW 2015-2016 (Multi)modaliteit, nonverbale en symbolische representaties Symbolen Opdracht 1. Een definitie van communicatie die wel gebruikt wordt is: “Communicatie is de uitwisseling van symbolische informatie die plaatsvindt tussen mensen die zich van elkaars onmiddelijke of gemedieerde aanwezigheid bewust zijn. Deze informatie wordt deels bewust, deels onbewust gegeven, ontvangen en geïnterpreteerd.” Hierbij wordt niet ingegaan op het aspect ‘symbolische informatie’. Preciseer dit begrip. Antw. Houdt in dat er een representatie wordt gebruikt die een bepaalde betekenis heeft. Dus de informatie wordt niet direct afgeleid van een bepaalde actie of gebeurtenis, maar op basis van een soort afgesproken betekenis die we toekennen aan het symbool. Opdracht 2. Wat is het verschil is tussen een teken (E: sign) en een symbool ? Maak het verschil duidelijk aan de hand van een definitie én aan de hand van een voorbeeld. Antw. Symbool is volgens Peirce een specieke vorm van een teken. Betekenis van een teken hoeft niet afgesproken te zijn, een symbool in principe wel. De vorm van een symbool heeft ook geen of nauwelijks relatie met de betekenis. Dat geldt bij ikonen bijv. weer wel (als speciale vorm van een symbool). Voorbeelden te over. Opdracht 3. Wat zijn de belangrijkste verschillen tussen Peirce, de Sausure en Ogden & Richards in hun opvattingen over de semiotische driehoek? Antw. Peirce legde een duidelijke relatie tussen symbool en object (werkelijkheid). Dat was bij Ogden en Richards implicieter (via de interpretant of betekenis). De Sausure was eigenlijk niet in het object geinteresseerd. Opdracht 4. Leg uit wat het probleem is van ‘intersubjectiviteit’. Geef twee mogelijke oplossingen voor dit probleem. Antw. We kunnen nooit bij de betekenis in het hoofd van een ander komen, anders dan door communicatie. Oplossingen: gemeenschappelijke toegang in de werkelijkheid en de manier waarop mijn symbolen wordt gereageerd (bijv. taalspel). Opdracht 5. Symbolen hebben enerzijds een fysieke vorm en anderzijds een betekenis. Laat zien waarom deze twee eigenschappen niet voldoende zijn om iets als een symbool te karakteriseren. Antw. Hebt ook conventie nodig (dus afspraak over de betekenis). Immers als slechts een communicatiepartner de betekenis zou kennen, kan het symbool niet in de communicatie worden gebruikt.
Opdracht 6. Er wordt ook wel gezegd dat symbolen de mens hebben losgekoppeld van tijd en plaats. Wat wordt hiermee bedoeld? Geef in dit verband drie redenen aan waarom symbolen zo’n krachtig instrument blijken te zijn in ons dagelijks leven. Antw. We kunnen in de taal verwijzen naar het verleden en de toekomst. Bovendien kunnen we symbolen vervoeren over grote afstanden. We kunnen dus praten over werelden die niet direct onze fysieke omgeving zijn. We kunnen plannen met symbolen, we kunnen redeneren met symbolen, en we kunnen abstraheren met symbolen. Opdracht 7. Wat is het verschil tussen de begrippen denotatie en connotatie? In hoeverre komen deze overeen met de door Eco gehanteerde term ‘aberrant decoding’? Antw. Denotatie is de gemeenschappelijke betekenis (ook wel de afspraak over de betekenis van het symbool, maar ‘afspraak’ is hier een wijd begrip), connotatie is de betekenis die we persoonlijk aan iets geven. Abberant decoding heeft te maken met de afwijkende betekenis die verschillende culturen aan iets geven. Dus tussen binnen die cultuur kun je dan spreken over denotatie, tussen culturen over connotatie. Opdracht 8. Wat zijn de problemen met de door Peirce gehanteerde indeling van tekens? Antw. Symbolen worden gezien als tekens waarvan de vorm losstaat van de betekenis. Dat is niet altijd makkelijk in te zien, bijv. bij onomatopeeen. Opdracht 9. Welke indeling van symbolen kunnen we hanteren vanuit evolutionair standpunt? Hoe zouden symbolen zich in de loop van de evolutie ontwikkeld kunnen hebben? Antw. Eerst lichaamseigen, dan voorwerpen, dan bewerkte voorwerpen (bijv. papier, etc.). Bij visuele symbolen kun je nog onderscheid maken tussen bijv. pictogrammen, rebusschrift en logogrammen. Opdracht 10. Wat waren de belangrijkste verschillen in de opvattingen van Jung en Freud met betrekking tot de interpretatie van symbolen? Antw. Bijv. Jung veel meer op collectief bewustzijn, Freud veel meer op sexualiteit. Opdracht 11. Geef een korte semiotische analyse van het onderstaande schilderij van Gustav Klimt. Geef daarbij duidelijk aan welke tekens en symbolen het schilderij bevat en hoe de schilder de symbolen gebruikt heeft om een bepaalde boodschap of sfeer over te dragen. Antw. Je kunt kijken naar kleur, helderheid, vorm en objecten. Man en vrouw. Mens als goddelijk door de gouden kleur en de helderheid. Man harder door de geblokte mantel, vrouw zachter door ronde vormen op de mantel. Vrouw kwetsbaar door houding van de nek. Verder zijn de mantels sterk in elkaar verweven: eenheid tussen man en vrouw, etc.
Multimodaliteit en nonverbaal Opdracht 12. a) Wat is bij communicatie het verschil tussen een modaliteit en een medium? Een medium verwijst naar de fysieke eigenschappen van het kanaal of de opslag. De modaliteit gaat meer over de abstracte vorm, zoals taal vs. plaatjes. Ze zijn niet altijd even makkelijk uit elkaar te houden. Het medium kan een aspect zijn van de modaliteit. b) Geef van de volgende voorbeelden aan of het een modaliteit of een medium betreft: 1. taal: modaliteit 6. Glasvezel: medium 2. zenuwbanen: medium 7. Lucht: medium 3. woorden: modaliteit 8. Braille: modaliteit 4. plaatjes: modaliteit 9. Koper: medium 5. spraak: modaliteit 10. alinea’s: modaliteit Opdracht 13. a) Wat is het belang van de begrippen modulatie en demodulatie bij non-verbale communicatie? (Leg eerst uit wat deze begrippen betekenen.) Antw. Bij modulatie wordt het signaal eerst op een draaggolf gezet om klaar te maken voor verzending. Denk aan AM, FM, GSM, etc. Demodulatie betekent dat de draaggolf weer wordt verwijderd. Bij nonverbale communicatie kun je denken aan intonatie die over de spraak heen wordt gemoduleerd, of alinea’s die een spatiële structuur leggen over de geschreven zinnen. Zo kunnen verschillende boodschappen tegelijkertijd worden verstuurd. De hersenen moeten de boodschappen dan weer uit elkaar halen. b)
Waarom moeten we audiosignalen eerst op een draaggolf zetten voordat we ze over afstanden van meer dan 10 km kunnen overdragen? Antw. De golflengte van een signaal is gelijk aan de snelheid gedeeld door de frequentie. Dus hoe hoger de frequentie des te kleiner de golflengte. Als we het signaal over grote afstanden willen verzenden hebben we antennes nodig. In het algemeen is een antenne ongeveer 1/10 van de golflengte. Als we dan een audiosignaal zouden willen uitzenden met behulp van een electromagnetisch signaal (snelheid van het licht is ongeveer 300000km/s) van ongeveer 100 HZ (iets lager dan de gemiddelde menselijke stem), dan zouden we een antenne nodig hebben van ongeveer 300 km. Als we gaan moduleren zetten we dat bijvoorbeeld op een draaggolf van GSM (900 MHz) en dan gaat dus de lengte aanzienlijk omlaag. Opdracht 14.
a) Welke verschillende vormen van multiplexing kennen we en hoe onderscheiden deze vormen zich? Parallel Multiplexing (FDM) en Serieel Multiplexing (TDM). Boodschappen in parallel (bijv. spraak en intonatie) d.mv. modluatie en demodulatie, boodschappen serieel (bijv. interjecties en spraak) worden na elkaar verzonden. b) Welke overwegingen kunnen een rol spelen bij de keuze van een bepaalde modaliteit (of een combinatie) bij het ontwerp van een user interface? Eigenschappen van de gebruiker (geheugen, perceptie, etc.), eigenschappen van de communicatieve setting (kanaal, andere aanwezigen, etc.), boodschap/taak (urgentie, inhoud, …) Opdracht 15.(geen tentamenstof meer, kan worden overgeslagen) a) Welke problemen worden door Finnegan (‘How can we communicate?...’) genoemd bij de klassieke indeling van de zintuigen? b) Welke klasses worden door Finnegan gebruikt bij de indeling van nonverbale expressies, wat betekenen ze en in hoeverre komen ze overeen met de klassieke indeling van de zintuigen? Opdracht 16. a) Waarom is ‘body language’ te beperkt als vervanging voor de term nonverbale communicatie? Omdat nonverbaal veel meer omvat dan alleen lichaamstaal, bijv. geluiden, kleding, etc. b) In communicatie bij mensen en dieren worden vrijwel alle sensoren gebruikt, behalve thermosensoren. Wat zou hiervan de reden kunnen zijn? Ze zijn moeilijk te reguleren, dus je kunt er bijna geen symbolen van maken. Wel kun je aan niet-intentionele overdracht denken, maar dat wordt dikwijls niet als communicatie gezien. Opdracht 17. a) Laat zien in hoeverre de interpersoonlijke afstand van invloed is op de informatie overdracht en de modaliteitskeuze. Op korte afstand kun je elkaar aanraken. Over grotere afstand moet je harder praten om elkaar te verstaan. Als je nog verder weg staat moet je je visuele vermogens gebruiken. Op grotere afstand speelt bijv. lichaamstaal een belangrijke rol, of grote van de letters. Zie ook verkeersborden of de aanwijzingen bij het landen van vliegtuigen. b) Laat andersom zien wat de invloed is van de situatie op de interpersoonlijke afstand. Mensen die elkaar niet zo goed kennen houden meer afstand. Ook afhankelijk van statusverschillen, emoties, de ruimte, aanwezigheid van anderen, geslacht, gebeurtenis (voetballer die een goal scoort), cultuur, eerdere ervaringen. Kan ook zijn dat iemand niet zo lekker ruikt . Opdracht 18. Wat is het verschil tussen een positieve en een negatieve emotie en in hoeverre kun je deze emoties herkennen aan het non-verbale gedrag van mensen? Het verschil is erg subjectief. We beschouwen negatieve emoties meesal de emoties waar we ons niet zo gelukkig bij voelen, boosheid, angst, verdriet, etc en positive emoties als blijheid. Je kunt
ze herkennen aan een scala van nonverbale aspecten, zoals de stand van de mond, stand van de wenkbrauwen, opgetrokken neus, lichaamshouding en bewegingen, etc. Opdracht 19. a) Geef minstens vier voorbeelden van informatie die met de hand overgedragen kan worden en die gecombineerd moet worden met de spraak om de volledige betekenis te achterhalen. ‘Die is zo groot’, ‘dat is die lamp’, ‘dat heeft deze vorm’, ‘dat is zo hoog’, ‘dat maakt deze beweging’. Het gaat hierbij om talige uitdrukkingen die direct gecombineerd moeten worden met eigenschappen van de omgeving om ze te kunnen interpreteren. Denk aan woordjes als die, deze, zo, etc. b) Geef minstens tien voorbeelden van (eigenschappen van) geluiden die niet verbaal zijn en toch gebruikt worden om betekenis over te dragen. Applaus, interjecties (eh, oh, he?), intonatie (vraag/antwoordvorm), kloppen, smakken, volume, accenten (nadruk), brullen/schreeuwen, huilen, snelheid, vingers knippen, etc. Opdracht 20. Onderstaande figuur toont een aantal voorbeelden van gezichtsuitdrukkingen. Links daarvan staat een tabel met emoties. Probeer zo goed mogelijk de emoties te koppelen aan een gezichtsuitdrukking. Ga vooral na waarom je bij iedere gezichtsuitdrukking tot je beslissing gekomen bent. (Soms kun je wellicht niet beslissing en zou je nog andere cues willen hebben. Geef in dat geval aan wat je aan informatie mist om een beslissing te nemen.)

Opdracht 21. Ga op een terras zitten en observeer de mensen. Welke non-verbale cues krijg je over: a. de rol die mensen spelen in een geformaliseerde organisatie. b. de rol die mensen spelen in niet-formele situaties (Leg eerst uit welke rollen je zou willen onderscheiden en daarna welk gedrag en andere non-verbale cues je daarbij observeert.) Formeel: ober, klant, en wat je zoal ziet. Nonverbaal: kleding, gedrag, lichaamshouding, etc. Informeel: vrienden, kennissen, collega’s, vader, moeder, echtpaar, etc. Opdracht 22. Lees het onderstaande (verkorte) stukje van Anil Ramdas uit het NRC waarin hij uitweidt over de symboliek van haar in India. We zullen later zien dat een symbool een vorm en een betekenis heeft. Geef aan welke vormen in het stuk worden onderscheiden en welke functies of betekenissen die vormen hebben. Een paar voorbeelden (afhankelijk van persoon): Vorm: ongewassen haar, betekenis: ik ben arm Vorm: jongenslook, betekenis: ik ben oke. Vorm: knotje en tulband bij man, betekenis: ik ben Sikh Schaamhaar (Uit Schaamhaar van Anil Ramdas, NRC 2000) In alle culturen is haar een punt van controverse en symboliek en de Indiase is geen uitzondering. Bedelaars wassen nooit hun haar, omdat ze anders niet overtuigend meer zijn. Intellectuele vrouwen dragen het haar als een jongen, om aan te geven dat ze het niet van hun uiterlijk moeten hebben. De mensen die de meeste betekenis hechten aan het verschijnsel 'haar' zijn Sikhs. De oprichter van deze jonge leer had verordonneerd dat mannen hun haar nooit mochten afknippen. Ze moesten er een knotje van draaien en daarover een tulband draperen. Kleine jongens hebben nog maar een klein knotje en zij bedekken het met een donker lapje ter grootte van een zakdoek. Mannen op leeftijd met bijna een meter lang haar gebruiken er, afhankelijk van de gelegenheid, drie tot zes meter stof voor. Deze godsdienstige eigenaardigheid is in India geheel geaccepteerd. Sikhs hoeven geen veiligheidshelm te dragen als ze op een motorfiets rijden, omdat de tulband het niet toelaat. Ook in het leger lopen ze ongehelmd rond. De vroegere Indiase goden hadden allemaal lang haar. Maar het was niet bedekt. Het was spiraalsgewijs opgestoken, hoe hoger, des te gewichtiger. Pas in latere tijden, tijdens de bezetting door de moslims en later door de Engelsen is aan de Indiase mannen geleerd dat ze het haar moeten knippen. Mannen laten zich scheren op straat. Je laten scheren is een statussymbool. Het is meestal niet zozeer scheren wat de kappers doen, alswel het verzorgen van de snor. De snor is van overweldigend belang. Er zijn weinig landen in de wereld waar zoveel mannen een snor dragen als in India. Als je geen snor hebt, betekent het in het zuiden van India dat je vader dood is. Een dunne snor staat voor ijdelheid, maar ook voor lichtgeraaktheid. Een borstelige snor betekent
zelfvertrouwen, potentie en goedmoedigheid. Een omhoog krullende snor wijst op gezag en verfijning. De vroegere maharadja's hadden allemaal een snor met een enorme krul. Wat de snor is voor mannen, zijn de wenkbrauwen voor vrouwen. Zware wenkbrauwen staan voor wellust. Daarom laten vrouwen zich epileren, wat niet met een pincet gebeurt, maar met een stuk garen. Het ene eind wordt in de mond genomen, dan wordt een strik gemaakt, waarmee haar voor haar wordt uitgetrokken. Het is een onbeschrijflijk gezicht. Lang, sluik, met kokosolie glanzend gemaakt zwart haar is sensueel. Zo sensueel dat het eigenlijk bedekt moet worden met een stof van kant of met het lange uiteinde van de sari. Een vrouw die haar lange haar los draagt, vraagt erom lastiggevallen te worden. Een vrouw die het haar tot de schouders knipt heeft overigens hetzelfde probleem. Het is zo opwindend als een minirokje. In sommige streken in Noord-India scheren weduwen hun hoofd kaal. In weer andere streken scheren juist de zonen die hun moeder verloren hebben hun hoofd kaal. Kaal heeft iets heiligs, net zoals lang haar bij mannen iets heiligs heeft: de heilige sadhu's die naakt rondlopen knippen nooit hun haar. Het moeilijkst heeft men het met schaamhaar. Volgens heel veel Indiërs is schaamhaar onrein. Vooral vrouwen in de vruchtbare leeftijd moeten het zien kwijt te raken en in voorlichtingsblaadjes staan altijd vragen over welke de veiligste vorm is: harsen, knippen, scheren. Want dat het bestreden moet worden, daar is men het over eens. Voor weduwen geldt het omgekeerde: zij moeten eenmalig het hoofd kaal scheren maar mogen nooit meer iets aan het schaamhaar doen. Zo belijden ze hun rouw, al zijn zij de enigen die ervan weten.
