Lecture, Study Group
Course objective This course is both an introduction in Anthropology, to ethnographical monographs, and a training in academic skills. The course provides students with the key concepts and debates of anthropology. It simultaneously highlights the relevance of anthropology for understanding the challenges that people and groups face in the globalizing world. The students will receive training in academic skills through the writing and presentation of a series of assignments. Course content In the first part of the course, September/October, we introduce the domain and particular methods of anthropology, the concept of 'culture', and the central questions and specializations within the field. Among other things we will touch upon the variety of human cultures, the idea of 'fieldwork', the central concepts of religion, ritual, symbol, kinship, ethnicity and gender; as well as upon; development issues, and some current questions with regard to globalization, identity, tradition, migration and multiculturalism. Most of these themes will be addressed in the course book, others will be elaborated on during lectures. To enhance a learning process in which concepts are not only memorized, but also applied, we will have question, reflection, and debate interludes during classes. In the second part, November/December, students select two monographs to read and review: a classical and a contemporary one. Tools for analysis and comprehension will be provided. Students submit a written review of both monographs, which includes a paraphrase and a critical discussion. Next to this, students have to twice do a critical oral presentation of a fellow student's review. In the third part of the course (in January) students write a paper about a self selected topic. Form of tuition The first part contains lectures and discussion; in the second and third part classes are used for instructions about the students' assignments and the presentations of these. The literature will be addressed in the lectures, but serious autonomous reading and selfstudy are primordial. Type of assessment Testamur based on a written examination about Part 1 (40%), assignments in Part 1 and 3 (30%), and the written and oral presentations on the monographs in Part 2 (30%). Participation will influence the final note. No final note will be given to those who did not fulfil all obligations properly. Course reading * Eriksen, Thomas Hylland (2001 or later edition) Small Places, Large Issues: An Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology. London/Sterling: Pluto Press (appr. 30 euro). Handbook of Part 1. * Two articles for a short assignment in Part 1 (will be made available via blackboard). * Two ethnographical monographs and some additional articles for the reviews of Part 2. A list of; monographs from which students can choose, will be provided. * A book and at least two articles for the paper assignment of Part 3. Students have to make their own selection, but will be advised by their supervisors. Target group Students of PMC SCA and exchange students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to; sign up; for a course, for more information on dates to sign up; go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Remarks Please note: this course is not taught during the academisch year 20112012. Only a clean sweep test is provided.

Teaching method(s)
Lecture
Course objective This course offers an introduction to classical and contemporary anthropological approaches and theories of religion, and highlights the role of religion in processes of identity construction in various settings (from subcultures to fundamentalist movements, from possession cults to new public rituals). Its aim is that students understand central concepts (such as myth, ritual, symbol, body & mind) and theories in the anthropological study of religion, and are able to apply them to contemporary religious phenomena. Course content All over the world, religion plays not only a key role in the construction and affirmation of personal and collective identities, but also in the realms of politics, consumer culture and corporate business. Countering the idea that modernization would imply a declining public role of religion, in the beginning the 21st century religion appears to be a strong social and cultural force, that is key to the politics of belonging in the era of globalization. Taking as a point of departure classical and recent approaches in the anthropology of religion, this course explores a broad range of past and contemporary studies in Western and non- Western societies. It focuses not only on institutionalized religious traditions, but also on broader expressions of religiosity. The course will address phenomena such as rites of passage, possession cults, conversion to world religions, the attraction of fundamentalist movements, state rituals, life- styling and consumer culture, new public rituals and the entanglement of religion and modern media. Form of tuition Lectures and guest presentations. There will be discussions in smaller groups, and in the plenary. Type of assessment Testamur based on written examination (40%) and take home examination (60%). Course reading Lambek, M. (ed). (2007) A Reader in the Anthropology of Religion. Oxford: Blackwell. Additional texts, to be announced. Target group Bachelor- , PMC- and Exchange- students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to sign up for a course, for more information on dates to sign up, go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Remarks Attendance is obligatory. Taking this course (including taking the written examination) is a necessary condition for entry into Anthropology of Religion part 2

Lecture, Study Group
Course objective Taking as a point of departure Anthropology of Religion part 1 (Key Concepts), this course seeks to: - offer insight into the theoretical and practical implications of studying religion as a social scientist, - train students in carrying out empirical research on religious phenomena. Course content How does one study religion? Starting point for this laboratory is the thought that we should begin an investigation of religion with the concrete forms in which it presents itself to us in a research setting; then to come to an idea as to what kind of questions can be asked. A weekly lecture focuses on central themes in the study of religion, such as spaces, objects, bodies, performances, texts, group boundaries and the question of absence. Based on his own fieldwork experiences, the lecturer will address basic issues such as: where do we find 'religion' in the field? Who will we talk to? How do we differentiate between canonical, orthodox and popular expressions of religion? What can we expect from interviews, observations, reflections? What could 'participation' imply in the study of religion? How do we access the religious experiences of the other? How can the material culture of religions help the researcher? Next to this lecture, there will be a weekly tutorial in which students discuss literature and get hands-on experience in carrying out anthropological research on religion.

Course objective * To deepen their knowledge in a number of relevant areas of comparative political research; * To introduce students to the methodological and theoretical foundations of comparative approaches to political science; * To train students in applying specific research methods of comparative politics for both large-N and small-N studies.
Course content The programme provides a thorough acquaintance with a broad range of methods and approaches of comparative political science. The course first addresses what we understand by comparative political science and by discussing the different methods of comparative research. Subsequently, attention is directed towards the problems encountered when doing comparative political science research. Although there is wide agreement that comparing is one of the most important methods of obtaining knowledge in the social sciences, the matter of how to actually perform a comparative analysis is still open to debate. We will address issues such as what do you compare (and with what), how many cases and variables should be included and which conclusions can be drawn from an analysis of the results. In the second part of the course, the following research methods will be discussed and practiced: correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis (e.g. model assumptions, outliers and influential data points) and factor analysis. The last section of the course brings together the topics focused upon earlier by examining several areas of comparative political analysis. These examples are intended to show that different methods and approaches lead to different results. Form of tuition Lectures and tutorials. Active participation of students is required. Course objective By the end of this course, students will: - have acquired knowledge about how experiences in one¿s family of origin influences adolescents¿ life courses, in particular with respect to educational attainment and life style; - have become acquainted with theories about stratification and theories of socialization; - have acquired knowledge about the consequences of educational attainment for the future life course of young people; - be able to critically reflect upon empirical research on intergenerational transmission of life chances. Course content Educational attainment is a critical factor that influences people's life chances and life styles across their life course. In this course, attention is paid to historical trends in educational attainment and to cross- national variation in educational attainment, but also to determinants and consequences of educational attainment. With regard to determinants of educational attainment, one important issue that will be discussed is how the parental home influences the educational chances and cultural lifestyles of young people. For instance, Bourdieu suggested that the cultural capital that children 'inherit' from their parents strongly influences the educational aspirations and accomplishments of these children. Another issue is whether the influence of the parental home on the educational attainment has decreased in modern societies or not. With regard to consequences of educational attainment, attention will be paid to the persistent and lasting consequences of educational stratification for the occupational career and for processes of partner choice. Course objective Students - acquire knowledge of and sensitivity for the (re)production of culture in organizational settings; - learn to recognize cultural themes in everyday organizational life; - learn to present an academic argument based on the analysis of ethnographic data. Course content Culture can be studied in different contexts and from various perspectives. In this course we look at culture in organizational settings, using an ethnographic approach. Whereas in organization and management studies the concept of (organizational) culture is often presented in terms of models aimed at establishing new, or changing old cultures, the ethnographic position focuses on revealing its empirical richness, complexity and ambiguity. In the first view developing practical tools for organizational behaviour and management are central. Ethnographers tend to warn against such quick (cultural) fixes emphasizing that to really grasp the importance of organizational culture a solid understanding of sensemaking processes at all organizational levels is required. The course starts with Fineman's Understanding Emotion at Work. This book explores the role of feelings and emotions in a broad variety of organizational settings. Organizational storytelling is a rich source for understanding how emotions are culturally embedded. This is why Gabriels Storytelling in Organizations takes a central in the course. The various themes and perspectives finally come together in a close reading and thorough analysis of Watson's In Search of Management, a classical ethnography on the cultural management of a telecommunications firm. This book shows in full depth the complexity of organizing and managing by focussing on the way managers and employees make sense of everyday organizational life. During the course concepts and theories will be constantly contextualized, in order to deepen the understanding of cultural processes in organizations. Additionally, students will regularly practice the basic skills of academic writing and presenting in intensive seminars.

Course objective To provide students with insights in current debates on citizenship rights, to provide them with information on the actual differences in perceptions across the world with regard to such notions as 'rights', and to make them reflect on the dilemma's contained in today's controversies revolving around fostering and respecting cultural difference on the one and striving for human rights universals on the other hand. Course content It is the cultural right of an ethnic or religious community to administer internal justice in accordance with its traditions. It is however also the universal right of any accused to be held innocent until proven guilty and to a lawyer of one's choice. In today's globalizing world, an old controversy re-emerges in a new shape, with unprecedented vigour and relevance: how can we reconcile the endeavour for universal human and citizen rights with the demand for the right to difference and for respect for diverse cultural and religious

traditions? In other words: how do we combine basic universal 'humanity' with cultural dissimilarities or how do we blend individual and collective entitlements, when both point at the notion of rights to make their point, but in the end often clash in their consequences? Should we maybe give up the 'universal' altogether? In this course we will reflect upon the uneasy merger of the vocabulary of the judiciary and rights on the one hand, with the idiom of cultural traditions and identities on the other. First, we will look into different 'cultured' perceptions of notions such as (human, citizen) rights, 'good' politics and politicians, and democratic rule. The cases will illustrate that no such thing as a shared interpretation exists on what rights and democracy exactly mean. Next, we will reflect upon the consequences of these findings for the universalist claim with regard to democracy and individual human and citizen rights. The course will be anthropological in approach, not anchored in political sciences or law studies. The regional emphasis in this course will be on Latin America.
Form of tuition Lectures and tutorial: student presentations, class discussions, 2 written assignments and final exam. Course objective The aim of this course is to introduce students to development studies, in particular to the core issues of poverty, inequality and development. Students will recognize the connections between problems in the South and wealth in the North, while at the same time deconstructing a simple South-North dichotomy. They learn to see the development issues through the eyes of the people in the South. Course content The development of a capitalist economy in the North and the ongoing, global restructuring of the economy have influenced the economic and social development of the South. Policies of states, supranational development agencies, and local NGOs to raise the standard of living in the so- called less developed countries meet with varying degrees of success. Negative side effects of these growth-oriented policies such as growing social and economic inequality, both within and between states, and ecological damage - are increasingly noted. In the lectures we will analyse how these global processes have local effects for both rural and urban areas. We mostly take the perspective of the people concerned, trying to understand how they experience inequality, poverty, and development and how they act upon these issues. Topics to be addressed include: health, famine, (civil) war, urbanization, gender inequality, ICT and globalization. What do these problems mean to the people concerned, which strategies do they design to face these problems, how do they resist unwelcome changes, and how do they seize opportunities to improve their quality of life? Ample attention will be paid to different theoretical traditions, including the post development school, which considers the concept of development a discursive hoax. Form of tuition Lectures, buzzgroups, documentaries. Type of assessment written examination. Course reading - Kingsbury, D., J. McKay, J. Hunt, M. McGillivray & M. Clarke (2008). Course objective The aim of this course is to further develop students insight into the issues of poverty, inequality and development and confront them with empirical and methodological issues. Students learn to interpret developmental problems in a framework of the most important theoretical insights, taking an anthropological perspective. Another aim of the course is to improve the skills of students to express their views in oral and written form. Course content The course builds on the insights gained in Development and Globalization part 1, which is a general introduction to the issues of inequality, poverty and development. Part 2 deals more in particular with the policies and interventions devised to tacklesolve these issues. The focus is on the often perplexing discrepancies between development aims and policies and their effects and impact. How can we understand and explain the gap between intentions and outcomes of development planning and what might anthropology contribute? What are the divergent views on development in practice? We will look at the importance of bottom-up planning, empowerment, emic understanding, and participation of the intended beneficiaries. Form of tuition Lectures and tutorial. Type of assessment Various assignments (50%) and final paper (50%). Course reading To be announced on blackboard. Course objective This course aims to help the student to: - examine and critically reflect on the relationships between economic and social development, and the environment; - learn to recognise and analyse the current and potential impact of the major international environmental concerns; - appreciate the complexities of environmental issues related to development at a global level; and learn lessons from case studies drawn from over 20 developing countries. Course content The course begins with an introductory overview of what we mean by the concepts of environment and development and how the two are related for better or for worse. Is the human imperative for development reconcilable with concerns regarding the well-being of the environment? In other words, is sustainable development, with its notions of environmental 'friendliness', really achievable? The course basically looks at two overall aspects of the international E&D framework: (1) Global Issues - which considers the links between development on the one hand and environment, trade and poverty on the other. International environmental concerns - including climate change, water, desertification and biodiversity - are examined from both their technical and governance aspects. (2) Local Issues - which then focuses specifically on the increasingly serious issues of land degradation, deforestation and growing water shortages, and asks key questions of how these are related to aspects of human development in poor countries especially within the agricultural (and off-farm) sectors. What roles, for example, are played by rising populations, and different forms of land tenure and resource ownership? Again, central to this debate, is whether the notion of sustainable development can be a reality in poverty-stricken rural and urban areas. Other issues examined in the context of rural (and urban) development are those surrounding the concepts of stakeholder participation and sound local governance. Illustrated case studies provide the basis for teaching.

Form of tuition Course work will comprise 14 x 2 hour lectures, consisting of theory and multiple, illustrated case studies. There will also be group discussions, debates, mini-assignments, group work and students presentations. Students will be expected to prepare for each topic through study of the selected readings prior to lectures. Type of assessment Assessment will be on the basis of: - paper from a selection of topics= 60%; - presentation of a particular environmental / developmental theme within a group = 40% (note each group member receives a common mark). Course reading Two texts represent the two sides of the global E& D debate. These are: - Brown, L. (2006) Plan B 2. 0: Rescuing a Planet under Stress and a Civilisation in Trouble. WW Norton, New York, London [also at: www. earth-policy. org/Books/index. htm] - Lomborg, B. (2001) The Skeptical Environmentalist: measuring the real state of the world. Cambridge University Press. Course content The Honours Thesis provides students with the opportunity to pursue an independent research project. For their bachelor thesis honours students will have to formulate the scientific puzzle, write a state-of-the-art (critical review of the literature), develop a sound and feasible research design, including a specification of appropriate research methods and a reflection upon the thesiss metatheoretical position. Subsequently, the research design needs to be carried out by conducting empirical research: collecting and analysing appropriate data and presenting the findings in such a way that the research question can be answered in a clear and convincing way. The end product -around 30-40 pages or 8,000 words in length (excluding bibliography and appendices) - could form the basis for a conference paper and should be of such a level that it would be publishable as a working paper or even as a journal article - an aim that students will be encouraged to pursue. Students will also be asked to present their work to a wider audience, e.g. in a student workshop before the faculty of the political science department. These presentations will be organised in conjunction with the parallel programme of the HP Research Colloquium Political Science. Form of tuition Tutorial (students will participate in one of the Bachelor Tutorial groups, see Bachelorthesis Politicologie). Type of assessment Testamur. Target group Honour's students. Course objective Students have knowledge of and insight in the nature of religious diversity and its often conflicting relationship with modern citizenship. Students are able to critically reflect upon the pros and cons of the various institutional solutions developed by liberal states to deal with religious diversity. Course content The course focuses on globalization and religious diversity in Europe. Religious groups have their own religious culture that is not necessarily compatible with the demands of modern citizenship. This course is aimed, firstly, at understanding the nature of religious identity. Secondly, it discusses why religious groups often pose a problem for the state. Many of the so-called multicultural conflicts are in fact conflicts over religion. Theories of multiculturalism pretend to have the answers. These theories will be confronted with how liberal states in Europe have in practice dealt with religious orthodoxy and culture. Paradigmatic conflict cases (e.g. gender relations, education) will be studied in depth. The perspective is comparative, both between countries and between religions and cultures. Course objective To gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of contemporary evolutionary approaches in sociology. Course content In social science, evolutionary approaches have often been contested. Recently, a renewed interest has arisen in sociological theory that takes its inspiration from Darwin's and Wallace's theory of evolution in biology. On the one hand, several approaches aim to link social behaviour to biological evolution. These include sociobiology, which sees social behavior as genetically determined, but also approaches focusing on the interplay between biological determinants and cultural factors. On the other hand, the socio-cultural evolutionary approach aims to model reproduction, variation and social selection of cultural elements. Course objective To gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the sociology of social problems. Course content What is a social problem? Sociology provides at least two approaches to this question. The realist approach views social problems as objective conditions in society, harmful to many people and to be remedied by collective action. The constructivist approach considers social problems to be assertions, claims by groups of people concerning presumed conditions. There is a wide gap, both epistemological, moral and practical, between the two approaches. This privatissimum allows honour's students to explore in-depth the various theoretical approaches and to apply one or more of them to a particular topic by doing a case study. The case study should result in a paper publishable in a journal for an intelligent, general readership. Form of tuition Individual supervision. Type of assessment Testamur based upon research paper. NB The paper may be written in either English or Dutch, depending on the student's preference and the target audience. Course reading To be chosen in consultation with dr De Vries. Course objective The aim of this introductory course is to familiarize students with academic debates on the phenomenon of `ethnicity, nationalism, nation-building, `identity politics and related subjects. Apart from the need for a good theoretical and critical understanding of these concepts, we have to assess the political dimensions of ethnicity and nationalism and how they are articulated in all kinds of situations. Course content In this course, ethnicity is discussed as a feature of the modern nation state with its inbuilt tension between homogeneity and diversity. The course addresses various topics in relation to ethnicity such as the politics of identity, transnationalism and migration flows, nationalism, (violent) conflicts, indigenous self-organization, politics of religion, and the role of modern media in political processes. Form of tuition Lectures by course and guest lecturers discussing theoretical concepts based on the literature and practical case studies linking theory and practice. Course objective During Part Two (week 10-20) of the course Identity and Ethnicity, students will choose one of two thematic specializations: 1) Ethnic constructions and strategies and their effects (Dr. Ton Salman), 2) Ethnicity and multicultural society (Dr. Lenie Brouwer). These thematic specializations will further discuss and develop the theory on ethnicity in relation to concrete situations and case studies. Course content * In the specialization Ethnic constructions and strategies and their effects we shall explore the meaning of ethnicity in the domain of political struggles and the strife for minority rights. We will explore efforts to revive, recreate and distinguish ethnic identities in the setting of efforts to obtain more rights or a better deal. We will critically review these efforts and explore possible excluding and reifying effects. But we will also address the strategic importance of such constructions. In particular, we will focus on indigenous movements in Latin America and elsewhere. * In the specialization Ethnicity and Multicultural Society, we shall address various issues that arise in modern multi ethnic nation-states, such as the ideology of multiculturalism versus assimilation policies, inclusion and exclusion, second generation, (new) media and minorities, Islam, culture and citizenship. These themes will be approached from anthropological and other perspectives. Form of tuition Tutorial. Individual and group presentations, discussing the literature, assignments and class debates. Toetsvorm Schriftelijk tentamen. Literatuur * Schuyt, Th.N.M et al. (red.) (2009). Geven in Nederland, Den Haag: Elsevier Overheid (27,50 euro). * Schuyt, Th.N.M. (2002).

Aanwezigheid is verplicht. Throughout, the course will be guided by the question to which extent, and how, the current process of globalization is changing the nature and content of world politics, approaching this question from the various competing theoretical perspectives that IR has to offer. Traditionally, the object of study for IR has been the conflict between and co-operation of sovereign states. This model is, however, increasingly regarded as outdated inasmuch as more and more non-state actors such as multinationals, NGOs and transnational social movements and groups appear to play a prominent role in world politics. In addition, we can also observe transnational forms of regulation through international organisations and emerging structures of what is called 'global governance'. Within this possible shift from international to transnational relations, new issues such as the environment and human rights have come to the surface. At the same time, as globalization is also about the integration of markets through global trade, production and finance, issues of international political economy have also gained new prominence. The question has been raised whether in the face of these processes of globalization and transnationalisation, states have lost the sovereignty that used to be the basis of the international system. On the other hand, there are still many instances where state power is very visible. Indeed, recent events have also once more brought home the message that the 'classical theme' of war and peace has not lost its relevance in this new era of globalised world politics. Form of tuition Lecture. Type of assessment Testamur based on two written examinations (50 % each). Course reading * John Baylis and Steve Smith (eds. ) (2008).

home, school careers, marriage and parenthood, divorce, and retirement. Lives are however embedded in a cultural and historical context and have therefore been subject to change. Lives are also linked to other people, as is clear when life courses of partners or life courses of parents and children are studied. Finally, how life courses evolve is not simply the result of external forces, but is also shaped by the actions of individuals themselves. The study of the life course is a truly interdisciplinary endeavor, with contributions from sociology, psychology, demography, social history, and economics. In this introductory course, students will get acquainted with the most important contributions to the life course literature from these different disciplines. In addition, students will learn how to interpret developments in peoples lives from a life-course perspective. This will mainly be done in two ways. First, excerpts from Michael Apteds acclaimed series of 7-Up documentaries will be studied and discussed, interpreting the developments in the participants lives with the use of life course concepts. Second, students will interview two older persons from their family network about their life histories and write a paper interpreting these interviews from a life course perspective.
Form of tuition Lectures and tutorials. Type of assessment Testamur based on presentation of assignments (25%) and a paper resulting from two life history interviews (75%). Attendance is mandatory. Course objective By the end of this course, students will be able to: - name, define, compare and give concrete form to the central methodological approaches within life course research; - be able to name and critically assess the research design, theoretical approach, and methodology of several life course studies and provide these findings in a short report; - undertake a hands- on quantitative life history data analysis using the computer program SPSS; - interpret and present the results of this analysis by linking it to a theoretical approach within life course research in a paper. Course content There are a variety of quantitative methods used in the field of life course research, such as cohort comparisons, time-series, and event history analysis. In this module we focus on one method, event history analysis, which is one of the most common methods used in life course research. Event history analysis is a broad term for statistical techniques used to analyze the timing and sequencing of events. It reflects the shift in social science research to dynamic, explanatory and process-based explorations. The study of event histories has become a valuable tool to study social phenomena in a variety of forms, from the study of individual life histories to changes in organizations, social movements, policies or countries. In this course we study

in-depth the timing of first marriage and/or cohabitation as a way to acquire practical experience in doing and understanding event history analysis. The course is divided into three parts. In the first part of the course, students will obtain an overview of the concepts and quantitative methodological approaches used to study the life course. The second part of the course will consist of a critical reading of several studies within the field of entry into first partnership with attention to identification, examination and critique of the research design, theoretical approach and methodology used. The final portion of this course will consist of a hands-on analysis of life history data using the computer program SPSS in order to examine changes that occur over time, between cohorts or in the duration of time until a change is observed. Students will learn the basics of statistical techniques to study the life course (e.g. Kaplan Meier analysis, Cox Proportional Hazards Model). Students use these techniques to study the transition into marriage and/or cohabitation on the basis of existing datasets and link their results to the general life course perspective and substantive hypotheses derived from the articles studied in the first part of the course.
Form of tuition Lectures, tutorials, and computer practical. Type of assessment Testamur based on three written assignments. The assignments are cumulative towards a final combined product that will resemble an academic article (in groups of approximately 2-3 students). The first two assignments will only receive a pass or fail, with the final assignment receiving a grade (100%). In order to move to the next assignment, students are required to pass the previous one; if students do not pass a particular assignment, they are given the opportunity to repeat and revise according to the suggestions provided by the lecturer, with all revisions to be completed within one week. Course objective By the end of this course, students will - Have acquired knowledge about the intergenerational transmission of occupational inequalities; - Have acquired knowledge about how labor markets operate and how they may generate social inequality in societies; - Have acquired knowledge about the main determinants and consequences of experiencing ¿ or not experiencing ¿ major labor market events, such as entry into the labour market, unemployment, career shifts and retirement; - Be able to interpret developments within labor market careers in terms of theoretical life course concepts and theories; - Be able to reflect upon and critically discuss trends and theories concerning labour market careers. Course content This course examines the labour market careers of men and women across their life course. It starts by pointing out the continuities and differences in the occupational careers of parents and children. Attention is paid to how occupational success can be measured and to the extent to which parents¿ occupational careers influence the careers of their children. Special attention is paid to the role of mothers in intergenerational occupational mobility. Next, attention will focus on the labour careers of adults. Attention is paid to important events in that career, such as entry into the labour market, unemployment, and retirement. Attention is also paid to career trajectories and to differences in careers between men and women, and between native and migrant populations. To address how labour markets generate social inequality among different social groups and over the life course, the course will use key literature from economic approaches, such as human capital and job search theories, and from sociological approaches such as the status attainment model of Blau and Duncan, and the perspective of cumulative (dis)advantage over the life course. Finally, the relationship between occupation and earnings is discussed. Form of tuition Lectures and tutorials.

Course objective * Obtain knowledge about different theoretical perspectives on media entertainment; motives, responses, and consequences * Obtain knowledge about different types of media entertainment * Train academic skills such as analytical reflection, writing and presenting Course content Media entertainment has become a driving cultural and economic force of many western societies. Today, people dedicate a great extent of their leisure time to humorous television shows, suspenseful movies, interesting books, pleasurable art shows, and thrilling video games. The lecture splits into two parts. In the first part, you will follow an overview about media entertainment research. Following on a brief

historical perspective and a look into the societal definition of (good) high and (bad) low culture, the lecture will focus on the psychological underpinnings of entertaining media: Why do people seek media enjoyment? What do people feel when they use entertaining offers? What makes a movie suspenseful? Each week, you will read one key article and apply what has been addressed in class by writing a short one-page scientific essay. Also, you will train your analytical skills by reviewing other students papers on an anonymous basis. A graded multiple-choice test will check for your knowledge acquired in the first half of the semester. In the second half, the class will go into more details, e.g., interactive entertainment, developmental issues, and gender differences of media enjoyment. Guests from the media industry will provide a practical look on media entertainment. In addition, you will learn how to write a scientific review paper about a problem or construct related to media entertainment. The paper will be developed together with others in a group and will be submitted and graded as the final assignment.

Course objective * Enhance knowledge of different approaches to discourse and narrative analysis; * Enhance knowledge of the importance of discourse and narrative analysis for the field of organizational studies; * Acquire practical experiences with (organizational) discourse and narrative analysis; * Stimulate critical reflection on the (im)possibilities of the use of organizational discourse and narrative analysis. Course content This course focuses on processes of collecting, representing, and analyzing organizational discourses and narratives. Organizations consist of people who on a daily basis are engaged in sense* making, meaning attribution processes concerning the structures they work in, the tasks they perform, their identities (within and outside the organization) and their relations with their colleagues. The basic premise of discourse and narrative analysis is that language is a form of social behaviour that plays an important role in the way social identities and relations are constructed and (re* )produced. The objects of discourse and narrative analysis are patterns in language behaviour as well as changes in these patterns. Attention will be paid to different approaches in discourse and narrative analysis. Course objective By the end of this course, students will - Have acquired knowledge about the policies and welfare arrangements that influence the life course; - Have acquired knowledge about the ways in which governments react to changes in individuals life courses; - Be able to reflect upon and critically discuss policies with regard to their consequences for peoples life courses. Course content During the last decade governments have become increasingly interested in policies that cater to the changing needs of individuals and families across the life course. Almost all policies have an impact on the ways in which individuals structure their life course. However, policies that are specifically designed to be life-course sustainable are rare. In this course, the actual and potential influence of policies on the life courses of individuals is discussed. Attention will be paid to educational policies, labour market policies, income Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen - B Communicatiewetenschap - 2010-2011

policies, and family policies. The relationship between policies and the life course is conceived to be reciprocal. Policies do not only influence the life courses of individuals, but changes in these life courses also lead to the formulation of new policies by national and sub-national governing bodies. In this course, this reciprocal relationship is explored. In addition, students learn to reflect on the life course implications of all kinds of policies. A number of guest lecturers who work in a policy context, either at the local, national, or European level will discuss how policies at these levels try to take life-course related change into account.

Literatuur Literatuur wordt voorafgaand aan de cursus bekend gemaakt via het collegerooster en Blackboard. the main theoretical approaches to social capital are discussed (Bourdieu, Coleman, Putnam) and empirical elaborations are studied on the micro level of relationships and networks, the meso level of neighbourhoods and organizations, and the macro level of countries. On all three levels, social capital is associated with various outcomes, as health, well- being, economy, education, crime and government. Negative outcomes of social capital are also discussed, including social exclusion and conflict. Finally, attention is focused on measurement of social capital and on policy interventions to increase social capital at the micro, meso and macro level. Form of tuition Lecture. Type of assessment Written examination (80%) and individual reading assignments (20%). (NB. Exchange students that are not able to attend the written examination in January have to write an individual paper). Course reading David Halpern (2005), Social Capital. Cambridge, UK: Polity Press.

* Daarnaast ongeveer 14 artikelen gepubliceerd in wetenschappelijke tijdschriften.

Course objective To study and analyse: - the changing character of war; - the public debate in times of war; and focus on the role of peace movements. Course content Wars can be cold or hot, interstate or intrastate. Wars can be perceived as politics with other means but also as aberrations of normal behavior. In the 19th and part of the 20th century, wars were considered normal instruments of state politics. After WW-2 this has changed. Peace movements in the 19th century focused on big ideas; in the 20th they became more defensive and 'anti'. Especially anti-Americanism became part of the peace movement agenda. Issues have changed dramatically over time. Public debates no longer deal with patriotism and 'revanche' but focus on human rights, humanitarian intervention and human security. History tells us of moments where states are unable to solve international problems while peace movements do. In this course developments in thinking about war and peace will be directly linked to historical events, specifically the different wars Europe has been engaged in since the 19th century. Form of tuition During the course, we will read and discuss a number of books and articles in which the spirit of the time is laid down. Students have to present book chapters and articles and write a paper on one of the topics of the course. The testamur is based on participation, presentation, and the final paper. The course is interactive; students are invited to communicate with the lecturer during the course, through email and directly by visiting his office (Metropolitan, Z330). Type of assessment Testamur based on: - Active participation (25%). - Presentation of literature (25%). - Paper (50%). Course reading Stephen C. Neff, War and the Law of Nations, Cambridge University Press, 2006, plus various articles that will be made available on Blackboard. Target group Bachelor students, including exchange students.
