The pillars of each Assessment Center consist of the determination of the actual performance level of the participant and the evaluation of the potential growth. Both aim to provide insight in the actual performance level of the participant, the potential growth of this level, its achievable peek and the necessary follow-up activities with the participant. These goals are achieved by submitting the participant to a personality profile study and a thorough skills analysis. Because the best imaginable predictor of one’s future behaviour is his actual behaviour, the Assessment Center is intentionally aimed at the provocation and the evaluation of this behaviour through practical cases. They offer a measurable indication of the skills the participant has already acquired and form reliable predictors of his future functioning:

2. Vertical Analysis of the Matrix of Results
30
Group Discussion
40
During a group discussion the participant is being confronted with opposite visions and opinions. Perseverance, tenacity and persuasiveness together with interpersonal interaction, listening skills and business acumen form the criteria that are being evaluated during this case. The participant showed a lot of initiative during this first case. He really presented himself as the moderator and conciliator of the meeting. He set priorities, watched the time available and saw to it that everyone got his say. His scores are very good on about every item: asking, listening, concluding, interaction, versatility, efficiency, tenacity and control.
Appraisal / Coaching
50
Role-plays offer an ideal setting to put the theoretical strategies of the participant on a practical trial. A realistically staged role-play is in fact the instrument by excellence to assess the communicative, commercial and leading abilities that the participant actually possesses. Therefore the participant is placed in realistic managerial situations with one of the assessors as opponent. This confrontation with a very down-to-earth employee who spoke by the card and never gave any information for free, was a hard introduction to Assessment Centers for this participant. He tried to create contact and build rapport, but was outnumbered by the strictness of his employee. At a certain moment he didn't even knew what to say anymore so the employee overtook all control and concluded the discussion. The communication style the candidate uses while in a leadership-situation is formal and a bit clumsy. He lacks weight and maturity to respond adequately to demanding leadership situations. In these situations he showed that his management control, creativity and versatility are to be developed.
Selection Interview 60
The participant - as future employer - interviews in this case one of the assessors as a potential candidate to a vacancy. During a short preparation time the participant receives the fictitious résumé of the applicant. (not executed)
Quinn Leadership Test This famous leadership test of Quinn refers to the four major management styles this century has known. The leadership of the contemporary natural leader however, characterizes itself by its ability to adapt flexibly to the actual employee concerned and the actual situation he is in, rather than to cling to one rigorous principle. (not executed)
70
Fact-Finding Distilling the facts from a complex and pseudo-financial text is an assignment that, together with the analytical abilities, measures the arithmetical capacities of the participant. (not executed)

In-Basket
80
The In-Basket is a highly praised Assessment Center method to measure the ability of the participant to respond correctly and alertly to real situations. It is rather the method that the participant applies than the solution itself that forms the criterion in this case. The assignments present themselves as memos, questions, requests, tasks en acute problem within the fictitious domain of authority of the participant. The reactions of the participant to the several items, memo's and phone calls show a very poor sense of priority management. Concerning his ability to delegate there is still room for improvement.
Sales Call The theoretical strategies prepared by the participant are put on a practical trial in a realistically staged role-play. Therefore the participant is placed in some realistic situations with one of the assessors as one of his clients or prospects. (not executed) 90
Letter Based on the agreements that have been made during the role-play, the participant is expected to address a quote to this client or prospect. Through this case insight is gained into the commercial capacities of the participant as well as into his written proficiency. Strong points of the candidate are interaction, concluding and tenacity. Somewhat weaker are management control, business acumen and written proficiency.
Presentation 100
After a serious amount of preparation time the participant is being asked to offer a founded advice by ways of a strong, visual and logically build up presentation. Interpersonal interaction is next to decisiveness and creativity the criterion that is being measured during this case. Subsequently the concerned person’s tenacity, perseverance and empathy are being assessed during an interpellation. The strongest point of the candidate in this presentation case is his sense of structuring information together with his interaction with his audience, empathy for them, energy and tenacity. Lower scores for management control, decisiveness and creativity.
Group Negotiation 110
In this case the participant is presented with the task to maximally achieve his objectives during a discussion with his colleagues. (not executed)
Buyer / Seller Negotiation
120
Once again role-playing offers the setting to assess all the Assessment Center’s criteria for this participant. Because during these negotiation role-plays it always concerns well-documented cases in which both client as supplier have just as much to win as to loose - so the assessors are able to execute a profound evaluation of both parties - this case is ideal to put two participants on opposite sides. The candidate had put on a strong fight with his opponent. Without loosing his temper, he countered his opponent's demands by negotiating concessions in return ('if you … then I…'). Therefore he scores high on control, creativity and tenacity.

Kennedy Negotiation Test Gavin Kennedy is the absolute specialist on the domain of negotiating skills. His Negotiation Test is a unique Assessment Center method to assess the level of the concerned person’s ability to react correctly and attentively in realistic negotiating situations. The results of the written test support our findings above concerning the negotiating skills of the candidate: 62% is pretty good. 130
Lauster IQ4 Test
The complete P. Lauster’s IQ-test measures four levels of analytical ability: perception intelligence, practical, verbal and arithmetical intelligence. (not executed)
Quinn-Bullmer Empathy Test 140
Empathy is the ability to have a profound and sensitive understanding of the interlocutor’s emotions and their immediate cause while keeping a sufficient distance to the person himself. The QuinnBullmer empathy test therefore exists out of a series of expressions to which the participant is asked to respond is such a way that the ideas and feelings of the interlocutor are accurately being reflected. The candidate scores 51% on this test discerning peoples feelings. He shows therefore that he has the potential to interact adequately with people, which however has to be developed.
Eysenck Personality Test Eysenck’s personality test is based on the answers of the participant on three series of more than two hundred questions. These answers offer a reliable insight into the concerned person’s personality profile on three criteria: extroverty, dominance and stability. The candidates shows to be a rather assertive and competitive employee with a tendency to stick to himself and be well-organized. 150
Eysenck Basic Needs Test This gauge to the basic need of the participant is based on Maslow's basic needs pyramid. Security, acceptance, recognition and efficiency form the four relevant ‘Basic Interpersonal Needs’ and show an insight in the underlying motives of the participant. His needs go toward realization, results, achievement and personal recognition.
Self Image / Compliance Check 160
This check has as sole goal to assess the self-image of the participant in order to make a comparison with the actual objective test results. Sixty questions reveal his self-image on the criteria of extroverty, dominance, stability, flexibility and empathy. (not executed)

Motivational Interview
170
Whereas the above-mentioned situations are aiming to discern the concerned person’s skills and abilities and whereas the psychotechnical tests allow us to evaluate both potential growth and personality profile, the psychological interview is the ideal instrument to map the motivation of the participant. The participant hereby demonstrates a very powerful, personal and mature vision on leadership, motivation, providing feedback to employees and coaching them. He seems however slightly frustrated about his position within the company and he wants to improve this. Working abroad is one of his ambitions. The promotion to Manager Systems Integration might make both ambitions possible: being more abroad and giving personal guidance to people.
Test Results Feedback In this concluding phase feedback is offered to the participant concerning the preliminary conclusions of this Assessment Center in order to provide him with the opportunity to confirm or contradict them. In a Tell / Listen way the participant was briefed about the above-mentioned conclusions. (not executed) 180

Asking scores very strong. Listening scores fluctuating and depends upon his level of stress. Convincing appears to be rather strong. Concluding appears to be rather strong as well overall (except for the very stressful appraisal/coaching case).
2. Tactical Skills • • • 200
210
Interpersonal Interaction is very highly developed. Interpersonal Versatility scores ok, except for the appraisal/coaching. Empathy by recognizing the basic need of the conversation partner scores rather well.
3. Strategic Skills • • • • • • • • •
Management Control scores rather well overall. Business Acumen appears to be less in stressful situations. Problem Analysis scores very well. Problem Solving is highly developed. Decisiveness is strong. Creativity scores rather low overall. Efficiency appears to be an area still to be developed, except for the participant's strong ability to manage a meeting. Tenacity is pretty strong. Energy is very constant and strong.
4. Communication Skills • • •
Verbal Proficiency appears to be ok, be it that the vocabulary of the candidate is rather limited. Written Proficiency is to be developed. The spoken knowledge of French scores strong.

4. Conclusions and Recommendations 220 The conclusions and recommendations concerning the participant are based on the answers to these three questions:
1. Does he match? Mr. O. is an agreeable young man. He is easy going, makes new contacts fast and is good in people situations. He is communicative, convincing and empathic. He lacks however some versatility, business acumen and creativity. This shows in situations with which he has no experience yet. 230
2. Does he want? The participant has a good sense of what a leader should do and should be. He is eager to assume the function of Manager Systems Integration. We do have a reservation however to his unease with his present situation. Frustration with this present situation should not be the motivation to climb higher on the hierarchical ladder. It seems as if a function abroad seems just as good to the candidate as the promotion concerned.
3. Is he able to?
240
Mr. O. has the potential to become a well balanced, empowering and encouraging leader. It is only a matter of time, because there are few other reasons to restrain him from promoting to a managerial position. He has however no experience at all on this area and needs lots of coaching. Appraisal/coaching discussions, making presentations and learning to prioritize should be the objective of further training for Mr. O..

4.2. Vertrouwelijkheid
• • • • • •
