Listening to Wintry Psalms ...Strong gusts prohibit lingering in one place for long and compel a slow staggering progress to the top of Jizera. The only places affording any rest are those sheltered from the wind by ice-cloaked spruces. During recent snowstorms, they were transformed into the mysterious shapes of hunched penitents and kneeling supplicants. The austere frost has bewitched them for daring to desire sunshine. Thus, the crowds of alabaster pilgrims remain motionless amongs the snow pillars of an ice temple, that winter created from the age-old trunks of dead spruces. Some of them lean rigidly on their tall sticks, some pray with hands raised and others bend their huge snow-hooded heads down humbly. All of them accept their fate calmly; a unique allegory of humility which only frost can create. If I can only press myself to the wind-sheltered side of such an enchanted creature for just a little while! The partial respite from the wind creates a strange feeling of safety. Despite the impenetrable layer of ice, I feel the mutual proximity of life; as if the sleeping spruce was inaudibly singing a forbidden ballad about spring. At this moment there is a little to separate human being and tree. However, the last remnants of bodily warmth are disappearing and there is no choice but continue the journey to Černá hora. At Rozmezí, a ceaseless wind is playing with the white plain and creating wondrous ripples and waves. Not far from Sněžné věžičky, a strange black point can be seen in the whirling snow. It moves curiously in the gusts of wind, and yet it stays in one spot. With every step, it becomes clearer that it is a symbol of evanescence and ruin. Half covered with snow, the body of raven, a sky wanderer with a playful soul, is lying on the snowdrift. The benumbed hands stroke in vain the frozen, motionless wings. What foolish behaviour, fit only for the frost´s scorn! Now it is no time for vain hopes, but for listening to wintry psalms! Winter only fulfils destiny in that it prepares the countyside for the miracle of re-birth. The freezing gale continues combing the bewitching shiny black feathers with indifference, and bringing tears to the eyes; requiem for a raven. The twilight journey from Čertův odpočinek is suffused with insatiable frost, which penetrates deeper and deeper until it starts licking the very bones. Walk and walk, donť stop; walking is the best companion at winter time. The silvery moon-darkness has already flooded the forest on arrival at the little cemetery at Kristánov. Only the tops of the fence slats peep out of the snowdrifts, and the head-stones and remnants of crosses are resting deep under the snow. In the dusk, merely the trunks of nearby trees are visible, as well as large memorial to glassmakers on which candles are usually hidden under snow... We have drawn on the book “The Jizera Year” (Jizerský rok), a beautiful photographic publication interwoven with perceptive texts by the photographer, Jan Veselý.

POINTS OF INTEREST AND NATURAL MONUMENTS
The Jizera Mountains are among the most beautiful hiking areas in the Czech Republic and in the winter months they offer you picturesque views from a number of lookout towers during favourable weather conditions. There are many “beauties” which invite you to visit, but we have listed only some of them which are accessible in winter. Any of the Jizera Mountains information centres will be able to provide you with information about the others.
The Císařský kámen Lookout The striking and highly visible peak called Císařský kámen lies on the westernmost promontory of the Černá Studnice Ridge, above the settlement of Milíře. It stands at a height of 637 metres above sea level, but until recently the view there was nonexistent because of the overgrown forest. This was certainly one of the reasons why tourists did not go there very often. All this changed in the middle of 2009, when a new wooden lookout tower was opened on Císařský kámen. The idea to increase the attractiveness of this area came from the members of the voluntary “Císařský kámen Micro-Region” association of municipalities and the mayor of the municipality of Rádlo, Jaroslav Cvrček. The idea also appealed to the representatives of the borough of Vratislavice, within whose cadastral territory the Císařský kámen peak is situated, and the representatives of the Liberec Region and so the preparatory work was able to begin in autumn 2008. In the spring of 2009, the Taxus Company from Rychnov began work on the actual structure. The structure quickly grew floor by floor and the upper platform with its handrail, which is located on the 9th floor at a height of 18.8 m, was completed in the middle of the year. A total of 32 cubic metres of wood were used on the structure at a cost of almost two million crowns. The final approval proceedings took place successfully at the end of June and visitors have been able to visit the tower since that time. However, the official opening took place on 19th September 2009 upon the occasion of the 230th anniversary of the visit of Emperor Joseph II. He visited the site at that time in order to inspect it for the possible construction of a military fortification. His visit is recalled in a memorial plaque which was unveiled in 1879. Crowds of visitors flocked to Císařský kámen on the day that the lookout was opened. They were not only rewarded with an uncommon view, but also with a party on the nearby meadow and a memorial certificate. This coming winter season will therefore be the first one which will test the structure under mountain winter conditions. If you go there, keep in mind that entry into the lookout tower is prohibited during snow, ice or frost – this is written in the visitors’ rules. Text author: Otokar Simm

tains to the Baltic Sea. The spring of the Nisa is considered to be the Lučanská Nisa, at the spring of which there is a memorial plaque. Q The Bukovec – Jizerka – Jizerka Peat Bog Teaching Trail (Naučná stezka Bukovec – Jizerka – Rašeliniště Jizerky) – the teaching trail acquaints visitors with the variety and richness of nature and with a number of remarkable historical features. It starts at the first house at the eastern edge of Jizerka, at the place where the road from Horní Polubný emerges from the forest, and finishes at the view of the upland bog in the Jizerka Peat Bog National Nature Reserve (Národní přírodní rezervaci Rašeliniště Jizerky). Over a distance of six kilometres, it passes through the Bukovec Nature Reserve (Přírodní rezervace Bukovec) and the old gold-mining, glassmaking and woodcutting settlement of Jizerka and continues through the territory of the aforementioned Jizerka Peat Bog National Nature Reserve. Q The Jizera Mountains Forest Teaching Trail (Naučná stezka Lesy Jizerských hor) – 12 km long. It begins in Bedřichov and continues along the Government Trail (Vládní cesta) to Nová louka, Hřebínek and Ferdinandov. Q Oldřichovské háje a skály – the teaching trail acquaints visitors with the natural relations and points of interest of the westernmost part of the Jizera Mountains which includes part of the Jizera Mountain Beech Forest Nature Reserve. This territory is one of the best preserved and naturally most valuable areas in the Jizera Mountains Nature Reserve. Q The Jizerka settlement – the highest located municipality, the most beautiful nook in the mountains. The settlement consists of around twenty buildings (the Manor House, the Pyramid, the glassworks, the old sawmill, the customs office, the old school – the Museum of the Jizera Mountains and so on). The connection with the rest of civilisation is secured by a maintained mountain road. The dominant feature of Jizerka is the highest piece of basalt volcanic rock in Central Europe, the hill called Bukovec (1,005 m above sea level). There is a state nature reserve there and a teaching trail passes through it (as well as through all of Jizerka). A stream of the same name flows through Jizerka, as does the Safírový potůček stream, in which a deposit of precious stones (sapphires, rubies, chalcedony, topazes, etc.) was reported. You will learn much of the history and natural wealth of the Jizerka settlement and the Jizera Mountains during a visit to the museum located in the old school. You can continue from Jizerka to the Rašeliniště Jizerky (Jizerka Peat Bog) National Nature Reserve
or across the Orle border crossing point to the Polish side of the Jizera Mountains. Q The small monuments and memorial crosses of the Jizera Mountains – the remarkable points of interest in the Jizera Mountains also include small monuments and memorial crosses which are abundantly dispersed around the entire territory of the Jizera Mountains. They also tell many stories, which are often more than one hundred years old and of great interest. http://stovi.info/pomnicky/. Q Terasy Ještědu (the Ještěd terraces) – a teaching trail mainly focussed on the geology and geomorphology of the Ještěd Ridge. Q The yew trees under Dračí skála – the trail leads above the municipality of Fojtka and is only several hundred metres long. This is a protected area of coniferous English yew trees. Q Viničná cesta – a specific feature of the Jizera Mountains, hiking, monuments, a military fortification. Q Vodopády Černého potoka (the Černý potok stream waterfalls) – near the municipality of Bílý Potok pod Smrkem, this involves the largest waterfalls in the entire Jizera Mountains, some of the most beautiful waterfalls, which are absolutely wonderful after rain. The best access to them is from Bílý Potok pod Smrkem, from the railway station following the hiking trail markings: or from Hejnice, in the direction of the auto camp along the yellow marked trail and further along the green marked hiking trail. Q Vodopády na Černé Desné (the waterfalls on the Černá Desná) – a beautiful natural nook not far from Desná. The red marked walking track will take you to the Sklář cultural centre, from where you turn left and head down the Černá Desná to the valley of this small mountain river. The Town of Desná recently had the track repaired and in September 2000 it opened the Waterfalls on the Černá Desná Teaching Trail. It is possible to follow the red marked trail from there up to the Souš reservoir. Q Vodopády Sloupského potoka – Velký a Malý Štolpich (the waterfalls of the Sloupský Potok stream – the Large and Small Štolpich) – these two waterfalls, which fall into a valley in wonderful cascades, can be found near Hejnice, above Ferdinandov. The Velký Štolpich waterfall – the stream passes over a 30 m high cliff wall and forms several waterfalls and cascades. Along the way, it is possible to have a rest at the Maiwaldova smrt (Maiwald’s Death) monument (Gustav Maiwald of Ferdinandov died beneath a sledge in the Velký Štolpich ravine and this event is still marked by a cross near the bridge under the waterfall).
The former settlement on the Great Jizera Meadow (Velká Jizerská Louka) The colony of Gross Iser (Great Jizera) was a kind of counterpart to the Czech Jizerka settlement up until the end of the 2nd World War. It was located on the left-hand bank of the Jizera River and therefore was in Silesia which belonged to Germany. The political map of Europe changed after the end of the 2nd World War, however, and the territory beyond the Jizera became part of Poland. The German citizenry of the Gross Iser settlement, which at that time amounted to around 250 people, was moved out in 1945. And no new settlement in the colony of approximately forty cottages and homes which was situated in close proximity to the state border with the former Czechoslovakia was wanted. All of the structures – with the exception of one – were demolished at the start of the 1950s and the state border was guarded by the Polish army. The establishment of Great Jizera was associated with the Protestants who fled from religious persecution in various estates on the Czech side of the border during the post White Mountain period. They found refuge in Upper Lusatia and in Silesia. The first of them settled near the Jizera in around the year 1630 and they laid the foundations for a settlement initially called Iserwiese or also Iserhäuser (Jizera Meadow, Jizera Houses). However, the development of the settlement was slow, because the living conditions at such a significant height above sea level were more than arduous. At the end of the 18th century, the settlement consisted of twenty varied cottages, whose inhabitants made their living by breeding livestock and working in the forests, but also through poaching and smuggling. It was not possible to grow any agricultural crops. If you go to these places today, you will be welcomed by an extensive mountain meadow framed with dark spruce groves and islands of dwarf mountain pine. The Jizera flows calmly in a wide valley and it still forms the state border. The only structure which you can see on the Great Jizera Meadow is the Chatka Górzystów (i.e. the Highlanders’ Chalet). If the meadow is not under snow, it is possible to see the foundations of a large number of buildings around the paths. They are the remains of the old Gross Iser – Great Jizera colony. Before being demolished, the settlement was home to the cottages of the local inhabitants, but also to an inn, Count Schaffgotsch’s hunting lodge, a gamekeeper’s lodge, a youth hostel and a school. And it is precisely the so-called new school, which was built in 1938 as the last local structure, which is nowadays the hiking chalet. Visitors can not only find shelter there against bad weather, but also refreshments and friendly staff led by the married couple Wiesława and Stanisław Polańský. A small photographic exhibition acquaints those interested with the past of this settlement in the heart of the Jizera Mountains. Text author: Otokar Simm

POINTS OF INTEREST AND NATURAL MONUMENTS
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING The JIZERA “HIGHWAY” (www.jizerskaops.cz) The Jizera Mountain Trail is the oldest and most sought after Czech cross-country skiing area and the venue of the famous Jizera Fifty race. In comparison with other skiing centres in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe, it is unique in several ways. The Jizera Mountain Trail now has 170 km of maintained tracks, mountain reliefs and starting points which enable comfortable skiing over slightly undulating terrain. This area was the first to be mechanically maintained starting in 1984. The reason was the numbers of skiers who started coming to the Jizera Mountains for extraordinary experiences in the 1970s. The Jizera Fifty, the famous race which started in 1968 and which has been run as the Peru Expedition Memorial since 1971, has especially enhanced the popularity of cross-country skiing. You will find a map of the Jizera Highway on pages 12 and 13. The route of the Jizera Mountain Trail includes starting points which have been chosen according to long-term experience and upon the basis of the population density, good accessibility and the available parking: Q Albrechtice v Jizerských horách – Mariánská hora – the capacity of the car park at the fire station is 40 parking spaces Q Bedřichov – Maliník – car park capacity:
90 parking spaces Q Bedřichov – Stadium – car park capacity: 170 parking spaces Q Bedřichov – Hájovna Q Bílý Potok – Chalet Hubertka – the capacity of the car park at the self-service shop is 5 parking spaces Q Desná v Jizerských horách – the Souš reservoir Q Horní Polubný – Václavíkova Studán-
THE PERU EXPEDITION MEMORIAL – www.peru1970.cz
In 2010, 40 years will have passed since a Czechoslovak expedition of 15 mountaineers went to Peru where they intended to conquer the highest mountain in the Peruvian Andes, Huascaran. Much has been written about the sad events which befell this exhibition. The members of the expedition had also participated in the first years of the Jizera Fifty race. And so their fate not only changed this race, but also cross-country skiing in the Jizera Mountains. The Jizera Fifty became a significant race, in which thousands of people compete every year. Everybody can contribute to the 1970 Peru Expedition Memorial Preparations for the construction of the 1970 Peru Expedition Memorial commenced in August 2009. We hope to receive the money for the construction of the monument from private donors and companies. Everybody can contribute to the monument to the mountaineers whose fate has influenced the lives of many people and changed cross-country skiing in the Jizera Mountains for many decades. There has long been talk of building the 1970 Peru Expedition Monument. However, we have never been as close to this as now and it must be said that it is high time. The Municipality of Bedřichov, the organiser of the Jizera Fifty and the Jizerská public service organisation, which looks after the cross-country skiing tracks, have come together to establish the monument. In 2009, new bridges will be built directly at the exit from the stadium in Bedřichov – the starting place for important races, including the Jizera Fifty – and further landscaping will be undertaken. A beautiful area which lies in a peaceful environment, but is near to cross-country skiing and hiking tracks will thus be established: a place just made for the Peru Expedition Monument. The fate of the mountaineers is joined with many people; with their families, friends and with skiers who maybe did not know them personally, but know their story. Therefore, these people have come together and decided that it would be a good idea to build a monument, that the selected area would be a dignified environment, that they will decide on the appearance of the monument together and that each of us can donate money for its creation. As such, the story of the Czechoslovak mountaineers goes on. And you can become part of it. The 1970 Peru Expedition Monument will be built using financial donations from friends, family and anybody else who decides to become involved in this story... Text author: M. Jelínková, the Manager of the Jizerská public service organisation

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
Cross-country skiing trips Here are two possible cross-country skiing trips for the readers of the winter tourist news. They are designated for visitors, who are not interested in clocking up large numbers of kilometres, but more in a pleasant trip through beautiful countryside. They mostly pass along less frequented, but well maintained tracks.
From Bedřichov to Jablonec nad Nisou Bedřichov – Prezidentská chata (3 km) – the meadow at Královka – Hrabětice “the Chapel”“(6 km) – Horní Maxov (8 km) – Jablonec nad Nisou, the reservoir. Total: 14.5 km. Take the bus to Bedřichov from Jablonec nad Nisou or from Liberec. From the final bus stop, walk up the road which leads past the “Lesní chata” Chalet and the gamekeeper’s lodge in the direction of Nová Louka. Shortly afterwards, there will be a climb into the forest where you should turn right and head along the cross-country track. After 23 km of undemanding terrain, you will come to an intersection where you should head to the right and up to the President’s Chalet (Prezidentská chata) where you can take refreshments. Climb a further 0.5 km from the chalet up the meadow at Královka. After crossing the road, you will easily find the track leading to the left to Hrabětice. The track mainly descends and after a further 2.5 km you will come to the intersection of the road and the skiing track at the Hrabětice “Chapel” (the former fire station). There, you will find refreshments, a car park and a bus stop. Head to Horní Maxov from Hrabětice. The track will lead you around the Severák skiing area and the northern slope of Slovanka. After you exit the forest, there will be a small incline up to the Maxov Ridge. Then you will descend to the road which you have to cross. The descent continues and will lead you to the basin of the Rovný potok stream, where the Malá Strana Nature Reserve is located. Head past the Barborka Chalet to the forest. There will shortly be a steepish descent in front of you which skiers have named the Toboggan. After several turns along the fairly narrow forest track, you will exit the forest. You will see the cottages of Jindřichov in front of you and you will have to cross the road again. A pleasant descent along the Jindřichov meadow will bring you to the final descent to the Jablonec reservoir. If you wish, you can continue around the reservoir to the Jablonex building (bus stop). This will enable you to reach the centre of Jablonec nad Nisou on skis. This undemanding route with only short uphill sections and the option of refreshments is also suitable for parents with fit children. Text author: Otokar Simm
Around the Josefův Důl reservoir Hrabětice, the “Chapel” car park – the former Jablonec Chalet (Jablonecká chata) – the Josefův Důl reservoir, the southern bank (3 km) – the dam – the intersection under Kristiánov (6 km) – the reservoir’s northern bank – the Blatný rybník fishpond (10.5 km) – the intersection at Kristiánov (12 km) – the Josefův Důl reservoir – the dam – Hrabětice. Total: 17.5 km. You can take the bus (in winter the ski-bus and in summer the cycle-bus) or your own vehicle to Hrabětice. Head along the skiing track up towards Královka from the “Chapel”. After a short climb, turn right across the road and you will come to the former Jablonec Chalet (Jablonecká chata) (now a private building) after half a kilometre. You will now be at the edge of the forest and here you will once again find a maintained cross-country skiing track. Continue in the original direction (straight) and you will come to the southern bank of the Josefův Důl reservoir after a pleasant descent. When you come to it, turn left onto the dam and continue past the dam-
page 11
keeper’s house until you come to the second part of the dam where you will reach the reservoir’s northern bank. The route now alternates uphill and downhill sections and after about 2 km from the dam you will come to an intersection, from which the track leads up to Kristiánov. However, you should turn left across the bridge over the Kamenice and follow a less frequented track which copies the reservoir’s northern flank. After passing through undulating terrain, you will come to the place where the track turns right to the Blatný rybník fishpond (from there it is 1 km to Nová Louka and refreshments). Continue from the Blatný rybník fishpond along the skiing track in the direction of Kristiánov. After a short climb you will once again cross the Kamenice (bridge) and then come to another intersection of the skiing tracks in the area of Kristiánov. This time, you should head right, your skis will pick up speed and you will soon find yourself at the place where you turned onto the stone bridge a while back. You should then return to the dam along the known track in reverse order and take the wide road from the dam in the direction of Hrabětice. You will soon return to the starting point – the “Chapel” car park (refreshments). This undemanding route with only a slight climb will take you around almost the entire circumference of the Josefův Důl reservoir. The only refreshments are in Hrabětice or at Nová Louka, if you make the turn off (less than 1 km).
Around Štěpánka on cross-country skis The system of maintained tracks in the environs of the Štěpánka lookout tower consists of two circuits marked with green signs and the number of the circuit. At important places, there are maps showing where you currently are located. The third track in this area leads from Bosna to Paseky n. J. – Havírna and then continues to the Cutisin factory in Kořenov along the track called “Planýrka”. From there, it is possible to head about 1 km to the Martinské údolí valley, from where the track to Jizerka leads.

The code of conduct for cross-country skiing tracks 1. Be considerate of the others; mutual courtesy will help you to avoid any unpleasant situations. 2. Ski on the right in the prepared tracks. 3. If only one track has been prepared, skiers who are skiing downhill have the right of way. 4. If only one track has been cut and the remainder of the trail has been left for skiers using the skating technique, the skiers skiing on the right have the right of way. 5. It is permitted to pass skiers from both sides. The overtaken skier is not obliged to clear the track for a faster skier; the skier who is overtaking should inform the overtaken skier of his/her intentions. 6. When overtaking, hold your poles close to your body in order to prevent any injuries to others. 7. When skiing downhill, remember to consider your skiing skills, to keep a safe distance between you and the other skiers. 8. If you stop or fall, clear the cut track so that you do not block the other skiers. 9. If you have an accident with another skier, give him/her first aid to the best of your ability. Make sure that you have the contact number for the Mountain Rescue Service which is ready at all times to assist during accidents or in other crisis situations. 10. Keep to the prescribed area when using the skating technique; do not damage the cut tracks. 11. Maintain a safe distance from the others when skiing in the cut tracks. 12. Do not take dogs onto the skiing trails! The highly unpredictable behaviour of animals can be very dangerous for skiers in the cut tracks and also for your four-legged friend. According to the Forest Act, dogs may only enter the forest on a lead. It is absolutely inadmissible to have a dog tow you in the cross-country skiing track. 13. The cross-country skiing tracks are maintained mechanically. Be careful; you could meet a snowcat or snow mobile from the Mountain Service. 14. Keep to the marked trails; they have been conceived in order to satisfy both sportspeople and tourists. By leaving the trail and going into the forest or clearings, you may destroy the plants in the strictly protected areas. 15. Only use the cut tracks, if you are wearing skis. Hikers should choose a different trail or, if this is not possible, should not walk in the cut tracks. 16. Keep the track and its environs clean both for yourself and for the others. 17. In extreme circumstances, the operator of the cross-country trail is authorised to exclude any individuals, who breach the code of conduct for the trail and the principles of polite and civilized behaviour towards others.

DOWNHILL SKIING The Jizera Mountains offer many opportunities to lovers of downhill skiing. The slopes in the local terrain do not have the length or demanding nature of those in the neighbouring Giant Mountains and as such they are excellent for beginners and medium-advanced skiers. However, two “black” slopes (on Špičák and Ještěd) also offer skiing for advanced skiers. One feature of the downhill skiing in the Jizera Mountains involves the existence of a number of small skiing facilities which are family-friendly and offer favourable prices. You can find the locations of most of the skiing facilities on the map on the previous pages under the number in the black box. Paid advertisement
