The first MUNO is a fact! st
rd
From the 21 of November till the 23 of November we had the first MUNO or Model United Nations Oud-Beijerland. This is not the first MUN, there are MUN’s all over the world th in fact MUNO began with several 6 grade students going to MUNA, Model United Nations Alfrink. We had such a great time that when we returned thought about starting up our own MUN for De Willem van Oranje. We asked the teachers if this was possible and eventually we ended up having our th th own MUN for 4 and 5 years students of TTO. We started after the second break on Wednesday. Everyone had the time to get to Poortwijk because MUNO wasn’t at the location Zoomwijck. Our secretary general Esmee Vermolen and Mrs Manukiley had a speech and MUNO began. The delegates went to their committees. There were 5 committees: The Security Council General Assembly 1 - Disarmament and International Security General Assembly 2 - Human Rights General Assembly 3 - Environmental, Humanitarian and Health Issues General Assembly 4 - Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) The GA’s started lobbying and the Security Council started debating already. The Security Council is an ad-hoc debate were things happen on the spot and the delegates must improvise and act accordingly to their country. The GA’s got points that would be discussed beforehand. Everyone had to write a resolution for their GA or the Security Council as the Security Council got some points too, but these weren’t discussed. The resolution every delegate wrote is graded by an English teacher and based on how the delegates performed in debating and various other skills this grade will be changed.
Special Edition Internship • for students from students • for students from TTO-group • for parents • for teachers
The second day there was some lobbying time left for the GA’s and after the GA’s started debating MUNO was really on. Debates lasted till half of the third day. Then we launched a big ending crisis to end MUNO with a bang. When the ending crisis was over and in some committees solved, the ending ceremony took place. We had several speechers (thank you Mrs. Manukiley, Mr. Verschoor, Mr. Bouhuijs, Mrs. Poutsma and Esmeé Vermolen), certificates for highest heels, best debaters and best dressed male/female were handed out during the speeches and after the ending ceremony everyone returned to their own committee to receive their MUNO 2012 certificate.I had lots of fun during MUNO 2012 and I am definetly looking forward to the next MUNO, Jeroen Revelman

Special News Lobbying and Debating When I first heard about MUNO, I didn’t really like the whole idea of it. I thought debating against people from TTO 5 would be so difficult due to the fact that their English is so much better as well as their political knowledge. But after all, it wasn’t even as bad as I thought it would be. I never expected I would say this, but I even liked some parts. It’s also true that you learn a lot from it. You have to think constantly about what you can say on someone else’s point of view and you had to be really critical. As everyone was divided in a different delegation, the opinion of your delegation could be different than your own, which caused a few problems sometimes. For next year I think it would be wise to prepare 4TTO a bit more about what they have to do because being unprepared made it really difficult the first day. However, I actually liked to do it and it should be done next year as well. Elise Besemer V4B
One Year further : Bilingual HAVO In September 2011 the Willem opened its doors for the first time to 28 students who would be following bilingual education in the first bilingual HAVO/VWO class. In October this year 22 of those students who are now three months into their second year, spent an exciting week in Finborough, England where they had the opportunity to improve their English language skills and learn more about the English culture. In September 2012 we welcomed the second class of enthusiastic HAVO students eager to begin their education in bilingual studies. This year it has been decided to incorporate drama lessons into their curriculum to help develop their linguistic skills. According to Mrs. Hubers our drama teacher and English native speaker, the level of English in all four of our first year bilingual classes is equally good. As the English proverb states: “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” – come and see for yourselves during the school round of the Speaking Contest on January 16th where the first HAVO bilingual students will be taking the stage along with fellow students from bilingual VWO and Gymnasium. If you’re still not convinced then join us in an English evening of theatrical entertainment on Wednesday 12th June at the High Tea Party. You will be astounded at the level of English from our first year students. Mrs. K. Bakker

Plan my power in South Africa Location : South Africa Period : October 2012 th
On the 13 October 2012, I flew off to South Africa, for my internship. In South Africa, I would stay with a Dutch family that had already had two visitors from our school in the last couple of years. The first week, I would work at “Plan My Power” , which is a company specialized in alternative power supply such as solar energy. The second week, I would work at “RHIT Consulting”, that is a computer networking company. Before I went to South Africa, my host family told me I’d better take some rest before the trip because they would take me to a lot of tourist attractions! Sunday was my first day in South Africa. First we went to church, when we came home Wilma (my host mother) had provided a lovely lunch. After that, we went to a big shopping centre built in an Italian style. At night, they took me out for dinner. Then, off to bed because the next they we had to leave at 6:30 in order to avoid the traffic, to no avail. The next day I went to work at Plan My Power. I would not work the whole day, Wilma would come to pick me up after lunch to take me to a crocodile park and a lion park, which were both absolutely fantastic!
On Tuesday and Wednesday I went on site in Soweto. Plan My Power had a project running there. The government wants to place solar geysers in Soweto, but first all the houses needed to be inspected to see where this was possible (already) and where not. So we left early again, and I was
picked up at the company to go into Soweto (no, I did not have a gun with me). Soweto was different than I expected it to be. I expected it was much poorer and more unsafe, so it was better than what I expected.
And in the evening, I experienced a “Braaij”, a South African barbeque.Sunday, we went to an elephant sanctuary where I fed, walked with and rode on an elephant! This was absolutely fantastic!
I certainly do not say that I would like to live there, because it is indeed a kind of ghetto. But a lot less worse than I expected! I had a wonderful time over there; I enjoyed the fieldwork, I loved speaking to the very nice locals from Soweto, I just enjoyed experiencing Soweto. For Thursday and Friday, besides working, some tourist attractions were on the programme again. For Thursday, my host family had booked a guided tour through Soweto for me, and on Friday, a guided to through Johannesburg. Both tours were awesome! On Saturday, I could sleep over which I really enjoyed after getting up at six a whole week (which I am not used to ). This morning, I rode on a horse! It was stunning, though a little bit painful. Today I also visited a cave, which was lovely.
Definitely one of the highlights of my stay in SA. After that, we visited the first registered gold mine in Johannesburg, which was extremely interesting. The second week, I went to work at the RHIT Consulting, which was very interesting as well. This week, we visited the Magaliesberg Canopy Tours, ten zip lines across a valley. In one word, this was AWESOME. A fantastic experience! Also, at the end of this week we visited “Lesedi village”, a village where tourists are shown how traditional South African tribes live. A very interesting experience! After these two weeks, it was time to go back to the Netherlands again. I am so thankful for this wonderful experience! I definitely had the time of my life! Nanoscience in Delft Location: The Netherlands, Delft Period: August 2012 During the summer holiday of 2012, from th th the 6 till the 17 of August, I went to TU Delft for my internship. I did my internship at Single Quantum, which is a small company situated at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the TU Delft. It develops and builds superconducting nanowire single photon detector systems which are used by physicists all over the world to detect certain wavelengths for their studies. I was quite nervous on my first day at Single Quantum. My day didn’t start off that good since I missed the train (fortunately another one arrived 7 minutes later) and I had to run to
catch the bus. When I got at TU Delft I didn’t know anyone there or even which room in the building I had to be at. Fortunately, my acquaintance Sander Dorenbos picked me up at the auditorium of the TU Delft and gave me a tour around the section he worked at. I met a lot of interesting people, they were all very nice to me and asked questions about bilingual education and if I wanted to study at the TU Delft. After the tour, Sander explained to me what kind of work I would be doing in those two weeks. I had to work 8 hours a day in which I’d have to look for customers, or as they called it ‘sales leads’, who would be interested into buying the single photon detector. I managed to find quite some leads in those two weeks, over fifty! At the end of my second week I had to give a presentation about these leads to inform the employees. Other work I had to do was ordering administrative files, such as invoices, agreements, invention patents etc. I also got the chance to see the laboratories, in which I was allowed to test some of the chips that were used for the detector.
I did this together with another intern; Ryo Takemoto who was a Japanese student from Hokkaido University in Tokyo. He studied Nano photonics and was doing an internship for 2 months at TU Delft to learn more about the single photon detector. It was interesting to hear what the Japanese culture looked like and what he thought of the Dutch culture. Overall, I had a good time at the TU Delft and I will definitely study there next year (not the same study as my internship though)! The people there were just so friendly and the campus was nice as well. Isabelle de Haan
Aerospace Engineering after TTO-6 Are you ready for a challenge? Planning a mission to Mars, getting a Boeing 747 weighing 390,000 kg into the air, observing and predicting floods and earthquakes? That was the reason for me to choose for Aerospace Engineering in Delft. I was very lucky for I had one of the available places after the weighted lottery procedure. This year is the first time the study is taught in the English language already in the first year and I chose to enter this course, together with 20% of the first year students. Following the courses in English feels natural to me due to 6 years of tto, however studying on an university requires a lot more work than on high school. I feel ashamed that I even had the courage to complain on the amount of homework at high school. The study is high-tech, broad-based, internationally oriented, tough and passionate. A certain interest in aerospace will be needed to find this study entertaining, but then again who does not like to be up in air? I was also lucky finding quickly a room in Delft enabling time for my alcoholic activities (barcoach) at the student association Leonardo Da Vinci and playing lacrosse with the Delft Barons. If you have the chance of doing your study in English, do so because it will help you a lot with your English books. Furthermore studying with people from other countries is a lot of fun. Bilingual education-The path to great opportunities in life Once upon a time, when I was in 6th grade, I decided to start bilingual education. At that young age, the only motivation I had, was the fact that I wanted to do something extra or different. During my six years of education, once in a while the question ‘why did I choose this education actually?’ popped up. I have found the answer to this question. I followed bilingual education, because I can profit from it now, as well as in the future. At the moment I am a second year student in Veterinary Medicine. This study acquires quite some knowledge of the English language. Most of my books are in English, as well as scientific articles I need for research and even some classes are given in English. Also, lots of Latin is used in all the medical terms and luckily for me, Latin is closely related to the English language. In the past year, I have noticed quite some advantage, in comparison with my colleague students. Since this school year I am the secretary of the I.V.S.A. committee. I.V.S.A. is short for International Veterinary Students Association. Our committee helps Dutch and foreign students with acquiring an internship and at the end of this year we organize an exchange with a yet to determine country.
As secretary I am responsible for the written word and I maintain the foreign contacts. Here again, I find lots of advantage in my experience with the English language. I do not have to think about grammar, vocabulary or anything else, unlike my colleague students. In addition to that, I also have some international experience, due to my internship in Canada At the moment I am busy with acquiring lots of international contacts. Networking is very important during your study, especially for future purposes . It is my dream to doing a second internship, somewhere in the world.
This time I would like to do it for a period of a year or maybe more. A second idea is to start a career in a foreign country, after graduating. To conclude, bilingual education has given me a huge advantage, for the rest of my life. As well as my language skills, I have also developed an international character. As advice, I would like to say that it is very important to be open to a broad development of yourself. Use your bilingual education as an advantage and take it a level higher. Use it as much and as often as you can, to make yourself stand out. This is the path to great opportunities in life. Lisa Hol
Corina Wytzes

A REDMEN for two weeks Location: St. Catharines, Canada Period: 13-28 October 2012 Canada was such a great experience, it all started with checking in at the airport on the th 13 of October! The flight took 7 hours and after 2 movies and reading, I landed in Toronto. My lovely host family was waiting for me, I got my luggage and went to my host family (which at first I couldn’t even find due to my blindness). My host family consisted out of Helmy ( an old friend of my mum who emigrated 33 years ago and currently lives in St. Catharines), her husband Dave and their two daughters Meagan and Courtney and of course the two lovely dogs Smokey and Bandit. And by then we went to the car and we had a chat about the flight and they gave me a little tutorial on the area where they live. They showed me the whole house and after that I took a shower and went to bed, because I was so tired. The next morning I immediately went to church with them which differs a lot from Holland! Then we had a little drive in St. Catharines and they introduced the whole city to me. Afterwards I had some nice family supper (with the whole family)! It was a very special dinner because we ate a thanksgiving turkey! I got a lovely cake and some nice presents of the family! I watched tv with them and went to bed, because tomorrow was the day I was the reason of my visit to Canada: the Highschool. The school’s name was Denis Morris, and that is where the name Redmen comes from (Red was the name of the students, Redmen th comes from Denis Morris). On Monday 15 of October we had an appointment at school at 8.00 AM and we got all the paperwork completed. Then we went to the Denis Morris and met with the vice-principal. After 30 minutes, I finally got the permission to follow lessons there! My first lesson was chemistry, and it was about the same level as at our school so I could follow it easy. My second lessons was English, which was mostly about writing essays, then I had some religion classes, in the middle of the
religion class lunch started (which was one hour long) then I had 30 more minutes of religion, and finally history and that was my day on the highschool! The days I spent there would be the same every day, because they have 2 semesters where they both follow 4 different subjects, so every day and every morning was the same. This was a little on the downside for me, because I love variation, so every day the same schedule was a bit on the boring side, but the subjects were interesting, so that would compensate it. Also sporting is mostly attached to school in Canada, in Holland it’s just all sport clubs which are on their own not part of the school, but in Canada the sport teams are linked to a school. On Denis Morris Highschool you could attend more than 20 sports. The main reason that I was in Canada was to extend my English vocabulary and also learn something about their school system. The last Thursday when I was in Canada, I had a Haloween party, which had a little hounted house, and everyone was in costume, it was from 6:30 till 10’o clock. At first I couldn’t get a ticket but after a lot of messaging people, I got my ticket from the school principals! It was so awesome! But of course my internship didn’t exist of only serious things, also a lot of funny exploring things! I visited
Niagara falls at night and at noon, and the views were absolutely stunning, the smashing sounds of the masses of water collapsing into the ground gives an amazing feeling, I made some stunning pictures and it was something I will never forget! And Toronto was a thrilling experience so I visited the CN-Tower and went up to 366m above the ground, which gave me an adrenalin kick! Also I visited the Rogers Centre, and I was very lucky because I could stand in the middle of the very big stadium! We travelled from St. Catharines to Toronto by train. I visited the magic dinner show, where the top magician Greg Frewin performed! It was an amazing show where he made people float in the air, vanished an helicopter and lots of more of these cool magic tricks! I want to thank my host family, Helmy, Dave, Meagan and Courtney a lot, because they did so much for me, I would have experienced Canada another way without them, they took me everywhere and took very good care of me! I wish I could go back some day, you always will be in my mind, now I hoping that my fiction will turn to reality one time again ! Joris Rozemeijer

Windsor, England it is! Location: Windsor, England Period: 13-26 October
Before I finally arranged my internship, I had to mail and correspond a lot with England. My uncle and his girlfriend tried to help me as much as they could and suggested a care home as an option for my internship. Since I want to become a doctor and I work in one in Holland, I thought this would be a great idea. So after some mailing I finally arranged my internship. So in the late afternoon of the 13th of October I departed to Schiphol, Amsterdam. By then I was really nervous and excited because it would be the first time I would fly on my own. When I went to the luggage check-in they concluded my bag was too heavy so I had to remove some luggage and put it in my handbag. After that I was ready for my one hour flight to London Heathrow. When I landed in London Heathrow my uncle was waiting for me. We drove to his girlfriend’s house, she lives 15 minutes away from the airport so you can hear planes flying over all the time. We would stay there each weekend and the rest of the week I would stay at my uncle’s house because he lived closer to my internship place. During my weekends I went for Indian food, had typical English Sunday roast, went to a wakeboard lake, saw a play and of course I went shopping in Windsor. Windsor is a beautiful city with a lot of nice shops and of course the queen’s palace which is situated near the shops. We didn’t do a lot of sightseeing because I have been there before and already visited a lot.
On Tuesday my internship started. The first week my main tasks were doing paperwork that obviously nobody wanted to do, checking responding times on calls from the residents and doing some shopping. They didn’t have too much to do for me so I was finished early a lot of days. To kill some time I either went shopping are enjoying the free Wi-Fi at Starbucks. The second week was a lot more fun and interesting. From the beginning of the second week I had to accompany the residents, talk to them and do activities with them. We did yoga, exercises and puzzles. When I started talking to the residents I heard whole life stories and experiences. I think that they were just glad that someone finally had time to talk to them. Almost everyone I talked to complimented me on my English. When I said my goodbyes to the residents they said that they would miss me and that I had to come around some time. It was really nice to hear that they enjoyed my stay. I would definitely want to work in this sector. The first week proved me that working in the office is not suitable for me. In the future I might want to work abroad and experience the culture of another country. In the end the biggest challenge I had to face was biking on the left side of the road! Marissa Kooij

Do’s and Don’ts

Dutch snacks at Curaçao Location: Curacao Period: October 2012 th
On the 20 of October I left the country to go to Curaçao, I had flown before, but that was five years ago and with my family, so I was quite nervous. Flying for ten hours alone was a complete new experience for me, but there weren’t any problems so I landed on the Curaçao airport healthy and alive. There my host family was waiting for me, Luca Clerckx en Doedo Veenhuizen, I would stay there for the entire two weeks. After saying hello to them we went to what I would call home for my stay in Curaçao. As soon as I had arrived the first few days I could recover from travel, because I landed on a Saturday. So after a very lazy Sunday, Monday was the first day I went to the office together with Doedo Veenhuizen. After three days on the office I Spent some time with Berend Veenhuizen, Doedo’s son, who has his own business and has to travel a lot around Curaçao. So while working I got to see the island. This was already the first week on the island and it went really fast.
The next week I worked for three days in a snackbar, where I fried frikandellen, kroketten, and bamihappen. I also made sandwiches and cut a lot of vegetables. This was a fun three days in which I learned a lot, most importantly that I don’t want to work in a snack bar. The last few days were spent together with my host family. They showed me a lot of Curaçao, we went snorkelling, swimming and we visited Punta. Which were all very fun things . So after two weeks in which I had experienced and learned a lot I had to go home again and after a ten hour flight, I finally was home again. Koen Kuiper

Kindergarten teacher in Indonesia Location : Indonesia, Bekasi Period : October 2012 th
th
From the 12 of October until the 29 of October 2012, I went on an international internship to Bekasi, Indonesia. To arrange this all, I contacted friends in Indonesia. I could stay with them and have an international IB school (Sekolah Victory Plus, SVP) with the kindergarten teachers. This was totally appealing to me, as I like to work with little children and to teach them new things. The family I stayed with, who are close friends to my parents, arranged everything in a week time and before I even realized it my internship was all ready to start! The international school, SVP, provides students, aged from 2 to 18, with an IB education. There are 4 parts in the school, especially; Early Childhood Education (ECE), Primary School, Middle School and High School. The students have different origins, for example Chinese, Japanese, Australian or Indonesian, just like the teachers. There are not only Indonesian teachers, but also American, English, Australian, native Chinese speakers and even Dutch teachers. It is a wellmixed school where you feel instantly at home.
When I arrived after a 15-hour lasting flight to Jakarta with a transit in Kuala Lumpur Airport, it was already 30 degrees Celsius and 17.00 in the evening. It was already really dark, the temperature was high and I was still wearing my sweater from the airplane. After a long search I found my host family and got in the car to drive home. That Monday I would start my internship and I was really excited, as I didn’t know anything about what to do and what to wear. I have been working here for two weeks, in which I taught the children from 4 to 6 years old. The first week, I was in class EY1, for children aged 4 and 5, and the second week it was EY2’s turn,
for the children aged 5 and 6. I had to help them with their work, playing and read books. A usual day looked like this: I had to get up at 5.20 a.m., have breakfast and leave at 6.30. My day at school started at 7.15 when we had a day opening with all the teachers from the Early Childhood Education. After this, the children came and we had playtime until 8.00. Then the day started, and they sat down in a circle on their mats. We talked about their day and checked if their nails were cut short and their hair was washed. We talked about the planning for the day, and they were ready for their lessons! They consisted of English, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, maths, playing time, snack time, lunch, extra curriculum etc. I assisted their teachers and, depending on the day, the children left at 12.00 or 14.00. After this, I helped the teachers making arrangements for the next days, until 15.30 and then I was allowed to go home, which took another 2 hour drive as we spent more time in traffic jams than actually driving. In the evenings I was completely exhausted, because working with little children is so tiring but fun at the same time. It was a great opportunity and I learned a lot! I have been to Indonesia and Jakarta a lot of times already, so there was nothing new I saw. Although, it was a great experience traveling on my own and speaking English all the time. I have had a great time and I would do anything to re-do these 2 weeks! Indah Hijmans
