Interviews with English elementary school teachers in Ungaran concerning the techniques which they used in teaching vocabulary and what problems that teachers faced when applying those certain techniques (interviews in Indonesian). 1) Tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar apa yang anda gunakan di dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris khususnya kosa kata? Jawab:tergantung materinya ya..bisa repetition, game. Jadi,kalau itu menarik dengan game ya saya pakai game atau misalkan TPR menarik ya itu TPR yang saya pakai. Jadi, misalkan ada benda yang bisa di ambil ya sudah pake TPR. Kalau misalkan menghafalkan binatang itu kan susah ya ga mungkin saya membawa binatang, lha itu bisa pake picture atau juga game. Yang penting anak enjoy dalam belajar ya sudah. 2) Bagaimana cara anda di dalam meningkatkan tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar anda? Jawab:ya dengan membaca buku yang ada ya..kemudian juga mengikuti seminar kalau ada undangan seminar atau kalau ada penyelenggaraan seminar dimana ya saya ikut gitu. 3) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya kosa kata? Jawab: ya..keterbatasan alat peraga ya..kadang gambar itu tidak ada, kemudian apa itu namanya jumlah siswa. Jumlah siswa yang terlalu banyak, jadi saya tidak bisa memberi drill per siswa paling per kelompok, nah itu contoh masalahnya. 4) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan jumlah murid? Jawab: ya itu tadi ya jumlah siswa yang terlalu banyak. 5) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan fasilitas sekolah? Jawab: Kadang memang fasilitas dari sekolah terbatas, tapi itu kita tinggal pintar-pintarnya mengakali. Contohnya hanya ada tersedia 4 alat peraga di sekolah. Mengingat jumlah muridnya banyak ya kita buat group saja. Satu group 10 orang. Tiap group 1 alat peraga. Kadang memang tidak efektif tapi mau gimana lagi. 6) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan materi pelajaran yang anda gunakan? Jawab: Saya kira tidak ada ya. Memang kadang sering saya beri tambahan materi pelajaran di luar buku sekolah. Mau ga mau kita yang harus aktif mencari materi tambahan. 7) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan kemampuan dan pengetahuan anda?
Jawab: saya kira tidak ada ya karena saya sudah lama mengajar, kebetulan sebelum di SD saya sudah pernah mengajar di SMA

1) Tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar apa yang anda gunakan di dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris khususnya kosa kata? Jawab: Untuk vocabulary itu biasanya saya kasihkan untuk kelas IV, 15 kata untuk 1 minggu dengan dihafalkan di rumah kemudian nanti saya beri tes tentang kata-kata tersebut. 2) Bagaimana cara anda di dalam meningkatkan tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar anda? Jawab: Meningkatkan tekhnik saya biasanya sekolah ini tidak ada ya. Tetapi kemarin saya mengikuti studi banding di Surabaya. Di sana kita ambil gimana yang baik trus kita pakai di sini. seperti tadi misalkan itu ada jam. Jam itu ide dari Surabaya..nah kalo jam menunjuk ke warna merah berarti anak harus diam, maka semuanya diam. Nanti kalo kita menerangkan tidak ada yang ngomong. Kalo Jam menunjuk warna kuning artinya waktunya diskusi, semua boleh ngomong mengutarakan pendapatnya. Lalu kalo jam menunujuk warna hijau waktunya tanya jawab.Tapi keliatannya kalo di sini hanya berlaku beberapa bulan saja. anak-anak dah lama dah lupa. Solusinya ya kita cari tekhnik-tekhnik lain agar anak-anak konsen belajar. contohnya ya kaya tadi, anak yang istilahnya bandel tak pindah ke kelas lain. Itu akan membuatnya agak semagat, ada juga pelanggaran yang kira-kira enggak terlalulah yang penting berkaitan dengan pelajaran. 3) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya kosa kata? Jawab:Masalah itu kompleks banget ya..misalkan yang pertama ya kita kelasnya dulu. Tiap-tiap kelas beda.Kalo IVA yang tadi itu diam tapi gak bisa, yang bisa itu hanya beberapa anak. Lalu kalo IVB itu badung-badung tapi banyak yang bisa. Biasanya saya lebih sering melakukan Tanya jawab pada anak-anak yang cenderung pendiam jadi anak tidak cenderung diam saja paling ga aktif. 4) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan jumlah murid? Jawab: Paling ya sering ramai itu..tapi standarlah karena muridnya terlalu banyak. 5) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan fasilitas sekolah? Jawab: Kalo Bahasa Inggris SD itu simple ya..jadi ga begitu memerlukan alat peraga terlalu banyak dan rumit. Paling dengan tape recorder kita putarka kaset-kaset yang berhubungan dengan pelajaran itu cukup.
6) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan materi pelajaran yang anda gunakan? Jawab: Saya kira ga ada ya 7) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan kemampuan dan pengetahuan anda? Jawab: Seperti yang saya bilang tadi ya, pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di SD itu masih simple. Pelajarannya masih seputar simple presen tense, present continuos, past tense dan past continous tense. Hanya rumus dasar itu saja. Itu kan ga ada masalah. Terus anak-anak SD itu pertanyaannya kan juga ga terlalu kaya SMA. Kita menerangkan dengan Bahasa Indonesia saja kadang anak ga mudeng biarpun itu sudah saya tulis di papan tulis, di hafalkan di rumah..ya yang serius bisa, yang ga serius ya lupa semuanya.

1) Tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar apa yang anda gunakan di dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris khususnya kosa kata? Jawab: seperti tetap mengingatkan pada arti-artinya kemudian membaca keras. Lalu spelling wordnya, kemudian hurufnya. di sini alfabhetnya yang ditekankan. Selain itu saya minta anak-anak untuk menghafalkan, misalnya kalo di kelas itu mereka mencoba untuk membaca keras bersama-sama lalu one by one, kemudian juga membaca wordsnya dan artinya bersamaan. itu berulang-ulang terus. Dengan mengulangi seperti itu saya rasa vocabularynya lebih bisa diterima ke anak-anak. 2) Bagaimana cara anda di dalam meningkatkan tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar anda? Jawab:Kalo dari saya mungkin saya juga ikut menghafalkan ya karena mungkin kan anak-anak SD biasanya bertanya yang agak aneh-aneh gitu, jadi saya tetep membaca buku, membaca kamus tetap seperti itu. 3) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya kosa kata? Jawab: Kalo khusus vocabulary saya rasa anak-anak lebih sering lupa kepada artinya. Mungkin bahasa Inggrisnya tau tapi artinya apa dia lupa. Jadi kalo kata benda dia mungkin bisa, tapi kalo vocabularynya kaya kata kerja itu kan lebih susah untuk diingat. 4) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan jumlah murid? Jawab: Saya kira muridnya terlalu ramai. ini mugkin karena muridnya terlalu banyak, jadi kita harus bener-bener memperhatikan. Biasanya kalo ramai saya hentikan pelajarannya dulu, baru kalo mereka sudah puas ramainya baru saya lanjutkan lagi. Semakin mereka ramai, otomatis materinya semakin lama selesainya.
5) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan fasilitas sekolah? Jawab: Alhamdulillah alat peraga di sini ada ya..kaya dari plastik, gambargambar. Tapi kadang saya buat alat perage sendiri ya..kaya kemarin saya bikin tulisan di kertas, saya buat seperti flash cards. 6) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan materi pelajaran yang anda gunakan? Jawab: tidak ada ya.. 7) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan kemampuan dan pengetahuan anda? Jawab: Ya tergantung karena anak-anak kecil kan biasanya suka bertanya aneh-aneh dan kadang keluar dari materi, tetapi memang itu harus dijawab dan kalo ada pertanyaan nyeleneh mungkin kadang tidak bisa jawab muncul rasa ketidak percayaan diri. Jadi saya harus oo..ya sebentar ini PR saja. Jadi besok paginya baru saya kasi tau jawabannya.

1) Tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar apa yang anda gunakan di dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris khususnya kosa kata? Jawab: Biasanya tekhnik yang sering saya gunakan itu repetition. Biasanya tiap satu kata baru saya melakukan pengulangan tiga sampai lima kali. Selain itu saya menyuruh anak untuk membuat daftar vocabulary baru di notes kecil. Keuntungannya notes itu bisa di bawa di mana-mana sambil dihafalkan vocabularynya. Setiap pertemuan paling ga ada 8-10 kata baru yang di tulis. 2) Bagaimana cara anda di dalam meningkatkan tekhnik-tekhnik mengajar anda? Jawab: Pastinya dengan baca buku ya. Berhubung saya belum cukup pengalaman di dalam mengajar jadi saya juga berusaha mencari info dari guru Bahasa Inggris yang lebih berpengalaman. 3) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya kosa kata? Jawab:Waktu ya. Sering saya kehabisan waktu apabila saya melakukan games di kelas. akhirnya games tidak tuntas dan kata-kata barunyapun tidak semuanya bisa dijelaskan dengan baik. 4) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan jumlah murid? Jawab: Murid kadang jadi kendala ya. Masalahnya satu kelas ada 48 murid. Jadi, ramai sekali. Banyak yang omong sendiri jadinya kalau saya sedang menerangkan. 5) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan fasilitas sekolah?
Jawab: Tidak ada ya. Fasilitas dari sekolah saya kira sudah cukup mendukung. Kadang saya juga punya inisiatif sendiri gunting gambar warnawarni dari majalah, buat puzzle sederhana. Yang penting bisa mendukung murid dalam belajar. 6) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan materi pelajaran yang anda gunakan? Jawab: Saya kira materi yang di berikan sudah cukup memenuhi ya. 7) Masalah apa yang anda hadapi di dalam menerapkan tekhnik-tekhnik tersebut berhubungan dengan kemampuan dan pengetahuan anda? Jawab: Berhubung saya masih baru di dalam dunia mengajar, jadi saya memangmasih merasa perlu untuk meningkatkan skill saya dalam mengajar.

1) What teaching techniques do you usually use in teaching English vocabulary? Answer: It depends on the material. it could be repetition or games. If a games could be more interested to the students, I will use that technique. If TPR more interested, I will use TPR. If there is object which I could take, I will use TPR. For example if I asked them to memorize animal, I would not take an animal, but I use picture or games. The most important thing is the students should enjoy the lesson. 2) How do you improve your teaching techniques? Answer: By reading books, by attending seminar if there is an invitation. 3) What problems do you have in applying particular techniques in teaching English vocabulary? Explain! Answer: Limitation of instrument..sometimes the picture is not available and also about the number of students. Due to there is a lot of number of students, I could not give drill each student but only each group. 4) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to number of pupils in your class? Answer:Like what I explain above, a lot of number of students. 5) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the school facilities? Answer: Honestly speaking, school facilities is limited. But, it depends how to manage it. Example: there is only available four instrument in the school. Remembering that the number of students is a lot, we make a group. One group consists of ten students. Each group gets one instrument. It is sometimes not effective, but what should I do. 6) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the materials you use? Answer: Thought is not there. Sometimes, I give additional materials which are not provided from school. That’s is why I should be more active. 7) What problems do you have in applying the teaching techniques which are related to your skills and knowledge? Answer: There is no problem because I already have enough experience in teaching, because I already teach in senior high school before I teach in elementary school.

1) What teaching techniques do you usually use in teaching English vocabulary? Answer: Usually I give vocabulary on the grade IV, 15 for one week and I ask them to memorize it at home and then I will give the task for those words. 2) How do you improve your teaching techniques? Answer: There is no increasing technique in this school. But, yesterday I follow a comparison study in Surabaya. I took some techniques which I could apply here. For example, clock sign. Whenever it shows the red color, students should keep silent. It means whenever we teach, it is not allowed for students to speak. Whenever the clock shows the yellow color, it is a time to discuss. Everybody could speak to share their opinion. Whenever the clock show the green color, it is time to ask and answer. But, it seems the students easily to forget it because that technique is only apply for several months. Due to that for the solution we should search other techniques to make the students more concentrate to the study, example by moving the naughty student to the other class. It will make him/her more interested. 3) What problems do you have in applying particular techniques in teaching English vocabulary? Explain! Answer: It is a complex problem. Firstly, we should see the class. Every class is different. Example: for the grade IV A are keep silent and only some students who could understand. On the other hand, on the grade IVB all the students are naughty, but they could understand well. Usually I do questions and answer to the silent students, so they tend to be active. 4) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to number of pupils in your class? Answer: Basically, students tend to talk to other friends. It is a standard problem. 5) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the school facilities? Answer: English lesson in elementary school is still simple. So, we do not need too much instruments to explain the English language. Just using tape recorder is enough to play cassettes which have related to the lesson. 6) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the materials you use? Answer: No problem 7) What problems do you have in applying the teaching techniques which are related to your skills and knowledge? Answer: Like what I said before, English lesson in elementary school is still simple. The lesson is only a basic formula. There are present tense, present continuous, past tense and past continuous tense. That is no problem. Besides, the question of elementary school students does not like the question from
high school students. When we explain it in Indonesian language, they still do not understand even though I already write on the blackboard and I ask them to memorize at home. The serious one can do it, but for the not serious one they will forget it easily

1) What teaching techniques do you usually use in teaching English vocabulary? Answer: I always ask them to remember the meanings, then reading aloud. Then, spelling the word and the alphabet. In the class, I also ask the students to read the word together, then one by one. It is including read the meaning of the words. It is done continuously. I thought by this repetition, the vocabulary could be more understood by the students. 2) How do you improve your teaching techniques? Answer: I also memorize that word because sometimes elementary school students always ask confusing questions. Therefore, I should read the books and dictionary. 3) What problems do you have in applying particular techniques in teaching English vocabulary? Explain! Answer: Especially the vocabulary, I thought the students always forget the meaning. Maybe the English word they remember, but the meaning they forget. Due to that, it will be very easy for them to remember Noun. But, for the verb it is very difficult to remember. 4) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to number of pupils in your class? Answer: The problem is a number of the student. It is because the number of students is lots. Due to that we should give more attention to them. If the class getting crowded, I should stop the lesson. After they finished, I start to teach again. Therefore, I should spent much time to finish the material. 5) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the school facilities? Answer: in this school, there is instruments, instrument from plastic and picture. But, sometimes I always make additional instrument, like yesterday I make flash cards. 6) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the materials you use? Answer: No problem. 7) What problems do you have in applying the teaching techniques which are related to your skills and knowledge?
Answer: It depends on the students because they ask confusing questions and sometimes out of the material, but we should answer it. If I could not answer those questions make me lost my confidence. 1) What teaching techniques do you usually use in teaching English vocabulary? Answer: Commonly, the technique which I often use is repetition. Each new word, I repeat 3 to 5 times. Besides, I also ask students to make a list of new vocabulary in a small book. The benefit of it is the book can be brought by the students every where while they remember the vocabulary. There are 8-10 words every meeting. 2) How do you improve your teaching techniques? Answer: Absolutely I read books. Due to I have not enough experience in teaching, so I also try to get information more from the other teachers who have enough experience. 3) What problems do you have in applying particular techniques in teaching English vocabulary? Explain! Answer:Time. I often lack time if I use games in class. Games can not finish and the new words can not be explain well. 4) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to number of pupils in your class? Answer: Students sometimes to be a problem because one class consists of 48 students. So, it is a crowded class. 5) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the school facilities? Answer: Nothing. I thought the school facilities are supported enough. Sometimes, I cut colorful picture from magazines, make a puzzle. The important point is it can support the pupils to learn. 6) What problems do you have in applying certain techniques which are related to the materials you use? Answer: I thought the material which has given is enough. 7) What problems do you have in applying the teaching techniques which are related to your skills and knowledge? Answer: Due to I still new in teaching, I need to improve my skills in teaching more.
