Talent is present in all areas of Erasmus University: among students as well as staff, men and women, young and old, those of foreign background and those of Dutch. EUR is a real melting pot of talent. The university does not manage to hold on to all its talented people, however. Though our student population is very diverse, we have few employees of foreign background. Women are also strongly underrepresented in senior positions. EUR would like to change this. Our policy is aimed at more diversity among academic faculty and promotion of participation of people of minority background. EUR aims to have a workforce that offers room for talent on all levels and in doing so forms a better reflection of Rotterdam society. This brochure will introduce you to a number of measures. I expect that it will contribute to EUR’s reputation as an employer that strives for and invests in diversity.
The diversity programme is among other things based on the results from the research “Erasmus University as a melting pot for talent – Research into the position of women and ethnic minorities” (March 2007), of Ms. T.M. Timmers, MSc. The diversity programme has been made possible by a contribution from the European Social Fund.
Inleiding
Introduction
Diversity is still difficult to find at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR): the higher the position, the fewer the women. Only eight percent of professors are women. The situation is equally unbalanced when it comes to ethnicity. Academics from western and non-western foreign backgrounds are underrepresented. Within the ranks of support and management personnel, women are overrepresented in the lower positions and are in the minority on the higher salary scales. Erasmus University Rotterdam aims for a workforce that forms a better reflection of society on all levels, a workforce that is more diverse. This aim is one of the objectives included in EUR’s Strategic Plan 2004-2008. In the context of this objective, the university has joined the ESF EQUAL project ‘Participation as Priority’ under the project name ‘Erasmus University as a melting pot for talent’. This is a large-scale initiative, made possible by contributions from the European Social Fund. ESF EQUAL is aimed at creating equal opportunities and combating discrimination on the labour market. Since 2006 a number of activities have been carried out and prepared as part of the ESF EQUAL project ‘Erasmus University as a melting pot for talent’. In order to realise more diversity among the (academic) personnel, a number of measures have been taken. The most important of these are detailed in this brochure. EUR hopes these measures will make an essential contribution to making better use of female and ethnic talent. More comprehensive information on the diversity policy, including all the measures in detail, can be found at www.eur.nl/diversiteit (in Dutch).

OR PERSON OF ETHNIC BACKGROUND AS REGULAR PROFESSOR BEFORE 2010
At the moment there are 33 female regular professors or professors occupying an endowed chair at EUR. Role models are extremely important for the perception of an academic career by underrepresented groups. Within EUR the percentage of ethnic minorities in higher positions is also low. In order to achieve results in the short term (by 2010), every faculty should appoint a woman or ethnic minority academic as a regular professor. PREMIUM FOR APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR
The Executive Board will award a premium to faculties that appoint a woman or ethnic minority to the position of professor. This premium applies for a maximum of four years and consists of an amount equal to 25 percent of the gross annual salary of the newly appointed professor. This policy is already in place with respect to women. The aim is to create role models that help effect a better reflection of today’s society.

PREMIUM FOR FIRST TEN WOMEN/
A tenure track means that the academic, in addition to a fixed appointment for a specified term (track), is offered an employment contract for an unspecified time period (tenure). In order to stimulate the faculties at Woudestein to foster the participation of more women and ethnic minorities, the Executive Board is making € 15,000 available to each woman/ethnic minority appointed. This premium, to be spent as the individual sees fit, is to be invested in activities that will make the track successful, including training, coaching, stay abroad (study, conference) or a student assistant.

This pilot project has been set up for female and ethnic talent at RSM Erasmus University. RSM wants to have a number of talented university lecturers coached by its own experienced experts from the circles of professors and senior university lecturers. If this initiative proves successful, it will be introduced at other faculties.

I N F O R M AT I O N O N C A R E E R S IN ACADEMIA
You cannot love what you don’t know. A career in academia is a big step for many master’s students, especially those of ethnic background. The unfamiliarity with doctoral research plays a role in this. Nor do many of these students have a clear view of the career. Extensive information at an early stage can give insight more quickly into the possibilities and impossibilities of an academic career.
VOORLICHTING OVER LOOPBAAN IN DE WETENSCHAP
Onbekend maakt onbemind. PROMOTIEONDERZOEK
DOCTORAL RESEARCH
Of course there is still a great deal of research to be done and knowledge to be gathered on the position of female and ethnic academics and students at universities. For this reason EUR invests in two doctoral studies: • Doctoral study ‘Student diversity in higher education; Home-work-study interference among students from diverse ethnocultural background at the Erasmus University Rotterdam’. • Doctoral study ‘Position, perspectives, impediments, international benchmark of female academics at universities and support for gender policy among management‘.

Om die reden investeert de EUR in twee promotieonderzoeken: • Promotieonderzoek “Student diversity in higher education; Home-work-study interference among students from diverse ethnocultural background at the Erasmus University Rotterdam”.

The Executive Board makes a stipend of € 3,500 available per faculty for especially talented female doctoral candidates. Part of this money is intended for activities with an international component, for instance a short stay abroad. Other possible uses include visits to conferences or training/coaching. Every two years the faculty may nominate a talented female doctoral candidate. The awarding of the stipend takes place during a special meeting.

EUR NETWORK OF WOMEN PROFESSORS
The network for women professors set up by EUR has the aim of putting this group more in the foreground. That is achieved by: • Mutual exchange of information and raising the profile of female professors. • Support for raising awareness, like informing the Executive Board and the deans about the state of affairs with regard to female academic staff. • Participation in scouting for female talent in the various academic areas among female university lecturers and senior lecturers at EUR and potential candidates outside EUR. • Organise topic meetings for all women of the academic staff. • Report every job opening for a professor to this network as well as to the National Network of Women Professors. • The network is informed on the formulation of strategic plans for education and research.

RAISING THE PROFILE OF WOMEN
A publication on all women professors (both regular professors and those occupying an endowed chair) at EUR will bring the network to the attention of the larger public. In this publication the women talk about the successes they have achieved and how they ended up in academia.

LECTURERS AND PROFESSORS OF
ALLOCHTONE DOCENTEN EN HOOGLERAREN ALS ROLMODEL
ETHNIC BACKGROUND AS ROLE MODELS
Role models are very important to the perception of academic careers by underrepresented groups. Since there are few role models for these groups in the Netherlands, EUR will attract notable professors/lecturers for short visits from countries like Turkey and Morocco. This will take place in the form of a teaching exchange programme or visiting professorship. Elements that make up part of the visit are: • academic discussion/study; • teaching of classes; • contact with Dutch and ethnic
minority students. S T U D E N T A S S I S TA N T P R O G R A M M E AT THE ERASMUS SCHOOL OF LAW
Ethnic minority students are strongly underrepresented among doctoral candidates. The School of Law has a relatively high number of minority students and would like to let a number of them actively get involved in the academic discipline. Each of these master’s students will be appointed as student assistant to a doctoral candidate, with the aim of awakening their interest in an academic career. If this programme receives a positive evaluation after two years, the pilot project will be expanded within EUR.

KASEUR
KASEUR
The umbrella organisation of minority student unions at EUR (Kaseur) is unique in the university world. Kaseur is comprised of fourteen student unions, including two international student unions. EUR wants to make more use of the expertise and experience of Kaseur by involving them in a number of activities, including the information provision to minority (master’s) students on a career in academia. In addition Kaseur will also be asked for advice on various activities/policies aimed at multicultural talent.
S T U D E N T- A S S I S T E N T P R O G R A M M A RECHTSGELEERDHEID
