I was born a month too early and I was very small. I could not eat very well because I had lots of cramps. My mother learned how to give me a massage and I became more relaxed. The massages helped me gain weight. I needed her comforting touch and her good care. That made me into the healthy person I am now. Touching and massages are good for you. Don’t be afraid to touch. – Arnold I hate it when I am in a full elevator and people stand too close to me because there isn’t enough room. I always feel uncomfortable then, because I don’t know those people. I always stand in the corner and have a bag in front of me, so I have something to protect me. Afterwards I always change my clothes. I don’t mind when people I know touch me though. – Ella I’ve always wanted to become a physiotherapist. I’d like to help people to get rid of pains. I like the idea that by touching you can heal people and make life more comfortable for them. I am not afraid of touching other people. I always feel better when my mom hugs me when I feel a bit down. I think touching is good for your health and your mind. We need to have more contact. – Martha I like hugging people and giving my friends a kiss on the cheek. New friends always need to get to know me better to understand. Some of them think it’s strange that I like hugging and kissing. One day a friend told me she didn’t like me hugging her every day. She is a good friend, and I don’t want to lose her because of my hugging. That’s why I try not to touch her, but that’s so difficult because I want to show people I like them. – Jane This video shows us lots of reasons why we should not be afraid of touching. I did not know that massages can be so good for people, that they can improve your health. I’ve always thought they were good for sports injuries, but the fact that they can lower your blood pressure and get rid of headaches as well, that’s news to me. Maybe people should have a massage before they take any painkillers. That would be far better for your body. – Paul

Zintuigen geven ons leven kleur. Maar hoe werken ze eigenlijk?
Come to your senses What is that smell? Can you hear that noise? Taste this! Look at me! Feel this, isn’t it soft? When you hear these words, you probably don’t think about why we use them. Well, it’s because of our senses. Our sense organs (nose, eyes, ears, tongue and skin) are taking in information and sending it to the brain. If we didn’t have them, we would not be able to smell, see, hear, taste or feel anything! Talk about a boring life. Our sense organs are the parts of our body which let us see, hear, smell, taste and touch. Each sense collects information about the world and feels changes within the body. Both people and animals get their information about the world from their senses. That is why our senses are so important. All senses depend on the working of the nervous system. Our sense organs start to work when something stimulates the nerves. The nerves then send information to the brain. Your brain then tells you what is happening. For example: the nerves in your ears are bombarded by billions of sound waves. They send a signal to your brain. When this signal reaches your brain, you hear the noise. This all happens very quickly. Many scientists say we actually have nine senses. The five senses above that give you information about the outside world. They are called the external senses. And we have four internal senses, which give you information about the body and its needs. These senses are pain, balance, thirst, and hunger. For example, the sense of hunger shows that the body needs food.

De tastzin is heel belangrijk. Maar hoe werkt het eigenlijk?
Your sense of touch
Your sense of touch is found all over your body. This is because your sense of touch lies in your skin. If you are in a dark room and you bump into something, you put out your hand to touch and feel what is around you. This way you can find out very quickly what it is. Our hands send touch messages to our brain such as if something is hot or cold, hard or soft, smooth or rough. All our skin is a sense organ and it has millions of tiny nerves, which send messages to the brain. The nerves can also feel if something is hurting you. Feeling pain is important for your safety because it protects you by warning your brain that your body is hurt. Some parts of our skin can feel things better than other parts. Have you ever bitten your tongue? Why does that hurt so much? That is because your tongue is very sensitive to pain. But your tongue is not as good at feeling hot or cold. That is why it is easy to burn your mouth when you are eating something really hot. Did you know that ... • the most sensitive areas of your body are your fingers, toes and lips? • shivering is a way of trying to get warmer? • there are about 100 touch cells in each of your fingertips? based on: library.thinkquest.org

NOISE Loud noise can be very damaging to hearing. Noise levels are measured in decibels, or dB for short. The higher the decibel level, the louder the noise. Sounds that are louder than 85 dB can cause permanent hearing loss. The hearing system can be damaged not only by a loud blast or explosion, but also by listening to loud music or working under noisy conditions.
How loud are sounds and noises? The noise chart below lists decibel levels for everyday sounds around you: 150 dB 130 dB 110 dB 97 dB 90 dB 70 dB 60 dB 30 dB 10 dB
fireworks at 3 feet jet taking off pop concert baby crying motor bike car conversation whisper rustling leaves
How can I tell if I am listening to dangerous noise levels? ■ ■ ■ ■
You have to raise your voice to be heard. You can’t hear someone 3 feet away from you. Talking around you sounds muffled or dull after you leave the noisy area. You have pain or ringing in your ears after exposure to noise.
What can I do to protect my hearing? When you are exposed to loud noises, you should wear hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs. Earplugs are placed into the ear canal, so that they totally block the canal. Earmuffs fit completely over both ears. Earplugs and earmuffs can reduce noise by 15 to 30 decibels (dB). You can use earplugs and earmuffs together to achieve even greater sound reduction.
Why set a safe volume limit for music via earphones? If you listen to music at full volume for too long, you risk losing your hearing. Sounds over 85 decibels can cause hearing damage, and your iPod or mp3 player can easily get as loud as 105 decibels! Setting your music player’s maximum volume limit to 70% lets you listen at a reasonable level and reduces your risk of hearing problems. It also allows you to listen for longer periods of time before you reach hazardous levels of sound exposure. Therefore, be careful with your hearing and listen to our warnings and tips. Better safe than sorry. based on: www.asha.org, www.lhh.org, www.noisyplanet.nidcd.nih.gov, www.generationdeaf.com

WHEN DOES MUSIC BECOME DANGEROUS? Do you listen to music when walking, skateboarding or cycling? Do you think it’s safe?
The damage caused by portable music players like mp3 players and iPods is increasing worldwide. It’s not just because the decibels produced by music players can damage your hearing, but also because your favourite music is taking you far from reality, into a sort of trance.
Using a music player during activities like cycling, skateboarding and even jogging can lead to serious accidents, if you are not careful. You often see kids walking down the street with headphones on, far away from the world, never looking left and right while crossing the street. It would only take one wrong step for them to end up in hospital, or worse. Listening to music when you’re out and about is great, but you need to be smart about it. First – turn it down a bit. Listening to loud music all the time dulls your hearing. You may in fact already be partly deaf from listening to music via headphones for too long or too loud. Turning down the volume will not only save your hearing, it may also save your life! You will then stand a chance of hearing that car horn behind you, or the whirr of those bike wheels speeding towards you. If you use headphones in traffic, you should be extra careful, because you won’t hear anything except the music. Great for some situations, but not so great in rush-hour traffic or walking down a dark street at night. When you are wearing headphones outside, look around more often and check for people or vehicles behind you – or coming at you. A lot of you never think about these things. I hope it won’t take a trip to intensive care to get the message across.

Zie jij alles goed zonder een bril of lenzen? Wat is zien eigenlijk?
YOUR SENSE OF SIGHT
From the moment you wake up in the morning to the time you go to sleep at night, your eyes are acting like a camera. Your eyes send everything that you see to your brain for processing and storing, just like a computer. This seems a very simple explanation, but your sense of sight is in fact very complex.
How your eyes work Take a moment to locate an object around you. Do you know how you are able to see it? Would you believe that what you are actually seeing are rays of light bouncing off of the object and into your eyes? It is hard to believe, but it is true. The light rays enter the eye through the cornea, which is a transparent protective layer on your eye. Then the light rays pass through the pupil (the dark circle in the centre of your eye) and into the lens. When light rays pass through your pupil, the iris (the coloured ring) changes the size of the pupil. You may have noticed this with your own eye if you have looked at it closely in a mirror. If there is too much light, your pupil will shrink to limit the number of light rays that enter. And if there is very little light, the pupil will enlarge to let in as many light rays as it can. Just behind the pupil is the lens. The lens projects the image onto the back surface of the eyeball, called the retina. The retina is filled with approximately 150 million light-sensitive cells. These cells then send the information to the brain. The amazing thing is, when the image reaches the brain, the image is upside down! It is the brain’s job to turn the image the right way up and then tell you what you are looking at.
Protection Because the eye is such an important and complex part of our body, we have many features which protect the eye. The eyebrows are the strips of hair above your eyes which prevent sweat from running into them. Eyelashes help keep the eye clean by collecting dirt and dust floating through the air. The eyelashes also protect the eye from the sun. The eyelids sweep dirt from the surface of the eye. The eyelid also protects the eye from injury. Tears are sterile drops of clean water which constantly bath the front of the eye, keeping it clean and moist.
Imperfect eyesight Not all people have perfect vision. People who can see things up close, but not far away are considered to be near-sighted. On the other hand, people who can see far away objects but not those that are up close are far-sighted. When a person is near-sighted or far-sighted, glasses or contacts help that person to see things much more clearly!
Eye Catching Facts Most people blink every 2-10 seconds. Each time you blink, you shut your eyes for 0.3 seconds. This means your eyes are closed at least 30 minutes a day just from blinking. A new born baby sees the world upside down because it takes some time for the baby’s brain to learn to turn the picture the right way up. One in every twelve males is colour blind. based on: library.thinkquest.org

Dear Teacher My son, Harold Tourell, needs to go to the optician tomorrow, the 7th of January. He cannot read the teachers’ notes on the board anymore. I think he is near-sighted, because he can read everything on his laptop very well. Furthermore, he complains of headaches all the time. And when he has used his laptop he sees things all blurry. I am worried, so I have made an appointment with Specsavers in Leeds. The appointment is at 11.15 a.m., that’s why I am writing this note. Harold won’t be able to attend his English and German lessons, because I have made this appointment. He is a pupil in Class 3A. Kind regards, Mrs Tourell

myfavresto.co.uk This will be my favourite restaurant for the next few years. The food is delicious and exciting. There may seem to be some strange combinations, but everyone should try this food. I had prawn salad for starters, I never knew tea leaves could taste so juicy. The Roast beef was swimming in a spicy green sauce and it looked and tasted very wild . My Sorbet was a bit sticky, but the flavours ... mmm, they were awesome. Can’t wait for my date next week, I’ll take her to Skippie’s, definitely!
Disgusting! Who wants to eat tea leaves and nettles? Who adores pig’s feet or frog’s legs? Well, I don’t. This is no restaurant for me. I wanted to have a great night out with the guys and we decided to try something new. The Flower soup smelled nice. The other starters we had were too salty and too rich, the main courses were disgusting and my dessert, the Sorbet: I’ve never tasted anything like it: it was awful. We went home feeling sick, and skipped going to the cinema. So much for a great night out.

YOUR TASK
