The Abbey square: a versatile setting The Provincial Council is working on the economic developments, growth and innovation of Zeeland in the surrounding Abbey square premises with the twelve turrets. Here you can also find the offices of the Province of Zeeland’s employees. The Abbey square with the lime trees and planetrees is the setting for several events as well. The characteristic run lines of architect Cees Dam are your invitation to several Abbey entrances, like the main entrance with the additional granite columns with two tritons, the Kloostergangen, the Statenzaal and the Zeeuws Museum.

Luctor et Emergo is everywhere At several Abbey square’s entrances and exits you can find the Coat of arms of Zeeland with the aphorism Luctor et Emergo: I struggle and emerge victorious. On this Coat of arms you can see a lion and waves. The relationship between image and text are more than obvious, but appearances are deceptive. The ‘struggle of the inhabitants of Zeeland’ is in origin not related to the struggle against the water, but to the battle against Spain from 1568 till 1648.

The work of various architects When looking at the Abbey, you can also see the work of various architects. This is due to decline, fires, acts of war and expansion. In 1127 the Norbertijnen arrived who built their own spiritual centre factually where the Kloostergangen are situated. King Willem II made sure that the Abbey was to have its actual dimension. In 1940 a fire broke out in the Abbey through acts of war after which the Abbey needed rebuilding. The square and the Statenzaal were altered by architect Cees Dam in 1992.
Did you know that the Abbey of Middelburg is the last remaining Abbey in a city centre, in the Netherlands as well as in Flanders?

The architecture into vision The Abbey has numerous characteristic elements of architecture. A random choice. From left to right: two of the twelve turrets, marble staircase in the main building, pump in the Herb garden, doorknobs inner door main entrance.

The Abbey as meeting point Since the arrival of William of Orange in 1574 the Provincial Council of Zeeland resides in the Abbey. The Provincial Executive assembles weekly in the Admiraliteitszaal in the main building. The Provincial Council has its monthly meeting in the Statenzaal. One of the co-occupants is the Roosevelt Study Center. This international scientific institute is specialised in modern American history and yearly receives many congres visitors from home and abroad. Therefore, the Abbey is a meeting point for academics as well. Did you know that the Statenzaal was once used as a dining room, a canon casting foundry, a repository, a main guardhouse, a stable, a militairy hospital, a peat house and a gym?

Elke kroonluchter bevat 604 kristallen stukken. Veel stukken ontbraken of waren kapot.
The Abbey’s pieces de resistance One of the beautiful pieces de resistance in the Abbey is the travel desk of sea hero Michiel de Ruyter. Other pieces are the chandeliers. András from Luik restored three Venetian crystal chandeliers. Each chandelier contains 604 crystal parts. Many were missing or broken. The remaining part was dirty. András made an inventory of the missing parts. An employee from Murano (Italy) made these according to original models and from original material. The Admiraliteitszaal is in splendour again. At the office of the King’s Commissioner there is a Cross-banded cabinet from 1709. De kunstcollectie - The art collection

The Abbey: exhibition for artists The Province has embroidery, furniture, scutcheons, medals, clocks, paintings, glass and canons in possession, but also many art pieces from the art library. Various artists exhibit through art loan at the Centrum voor Beeldende Kunsten Zeeland (CBK) in the Abbey. In the Abbey square you can see exhibitions by artists from Zeeland in de Loggia regularly. Artist Peter Anthonie van de Kreeke from Goes exhibits here: “All my work is an expression of personal impressions during my travels. It is about me and my view on the world, the landscape in conversation with her inhabitants. The Loggia gives my exhibit pieces, which are about people and nature, an extra dimension.” 18

Two more pieces of interest • The Abbey has 480 keys. The largest one belongs to Michiel de Ruyter’s travel desk. • In the summer of 1956 artist and graphic designer Dirk van Gelder (1907-1990) was commissioned by the Provincial Council of Zeeland to design napery – damask. This was initiated by Mrs S.C. de Casembroot – baroness Van der Feltz, wife of former Queen’s Commissioner. She wanted to get rid of the laborious custom that damask needed to be requested from the wifes of leading residents for events in the Statenzaal. The result is described as one of the last important damask designs of the previous century.

“The Abbey has been an inspirational environment since the twelfth century, first for the monks and then from the sixteenth century onwards for the governors of Zeeland. It is a privilege to be able to come here as a King’s Commissioner to work with the staff of the Province of Zeeland, from the Admiralty Hall where we do our administrative work along with the Provincial Executive, through to the State Hall with the Provincial Council, our parliament in Zeeland.” • Han Polman, King’s Commissioner in Zeeland
“When walking across the Abbey square I feel proud. Just look at those copper cisterns under the gutter! And in each steeple I made is a shaped lead ball with in it a five-cent piece and a piece of paper with the year on it. It is tradition and a kind of superstition, my master did the same thing…you ‘buy’ luck with a coin, in order to wish such a turret all the luck for years on end. ” • Ed Antheunisse, slater at the Abbey commissioned by Province of Zeeland
” • Arno Francke, ringrijder
“To practise our magnificent folkloristic sport in a glorious surrounding where it all previously started, that’s cool! ” • Arno Francke, equestrian ring rider
