Letter from the President
T
he 2006-2007 campaign closes with a fantastic distribution of over € 1 Million at a ceremony in the presence of H.R.H. Princess Mathilde on 12 June 2007. We all have a responsibility and a role to play in improving the welfare of underprivileged people in Belgium. This requires generosity, organisation, energy and financial support.
Success stories International Paper: fun(d)-raising activities

The UFB in-house campaign at International Paper was a huge success (and great fun) ! During the recent campaign, the 93 employees at International Paper in Brussels raised € 70,586,44, breaking the company’s contribution record for the second year in a row. With this amount, International Paper is once again the company with the highest contribution per employee. Just as in previous years, International Paper’s UFB Committee was very creative and raised contributions in three categories:
First, the committee members encouraged their colleagues to participate in a number of fun(d)-raising activities, including a Touch Rugby match, employee fun pictures, a baby picture guessing contest, sales of exotic food, a lottery, a silent auction and much more. Everyone had a great deal of fun during the various activities, and employees gave generously. Second, employees had the opportunity to commit to a monthly salary deduction for the benefit of the UFB. And third, some of key suppliers who share our desire to support the most disadvantaged in Belgian society, made very generous donations. All contributions collected by our UFB Committee were then matched by International Paper with the same amount. We at IP are proud to be associated with the UFB and to support the many thoughtful ways in which this organisation helps people across Belgium. Thank you to all IP colleagues who contributed to this campaign wholeheartedly and continue to be committed to supporting the United Fund for Belgium! Claudia Brand Communications Manager

Rik De Nolf from Roularta Media Group and Bernard Deryckere from Group Vandemoortele (Alpro) are two important new donors this year.
This year, P&G donated € 120,000 and therefore doubled its financial support for children in need in Belgium. “I am delighted that United Fund for Belgium has now received a grant from P&G’s Global Fund, especially the year in which we celebrate P&G’s 50th anniversary in Belgium” says Erik Jonnaert, General Manager External Relations for Western Europe; “I hope that it will allow the UFB to build on the great work they do in the local communities and help support the children who need it most.”

Corporate Social Responsability is a key differentiating factor for prime corporations in the world today. By its way of working, the UFB offers a unique way to respond to these challenges for the companies. The UFB is an effective and useful bridge between the corporate world and individuals who wish to offer assistance, and Belgian humanitarian associations who wish to be helped in their daily activities. For the 35th consecutive year, the UFB brings together important human and financial resources: companies -and their employees- which constantly give invaluable support; a lot of individuals who make donations; the members of the Board of Directors who, in addition to their important financial contribution, dedicate time and work; also the effort of our hundred volunteers who tirelessly work locally and many companies which offer priceless in-kind donations… Thanks to all of you who gave time, energy and money to help us reach our objectives, the UFB is able to redistribute, this year again, 100 % of its fund-raising campaign to the beneficiaries, i.e. € 1,028,580 is reallocated to 99 charitable institutions in Belgium. Exceptionally, an additional € 97,000 is devoted to a Tsunami project in Indonesia. Without you, nothing would have been possible ! Thank you !
Christian Jacobs Some figures from the campaign The UFB is happy to announce that this year’s fund-raising campaign had a good result. We had an important growth this year of around 26% compared with last year. This is due to many loyal generous donors and to some new ones. An important factor for this growth is the good news that for the second year in a row, 100 % of the proceeds from the fund-raising campaign will be redistributed. This is made possible thanks to the very generous personal support of the UFB Board of Directors and to the growing Martin Kallen Fund. A total of € 1,356,097 was collected through various sources of revenues. • The donors to the campaign contributed € 1,110,669 - Corporate & Foundation donations represent 78% of the collected funds and are the main source of income.
- In-House campaigns were organised within twelve corporations and over 650 employee donations account for 7% of the total income. - The greeting cards account this year for 10% of the results. - Individual donations account for 2% of the total. - Special events/items sales contribute 3%. • The donors to the Martin Kallen Fund contributed € 164,695. The Board members and their corporations contributed mostly to this exceptional campaign. The market value of the Martin Kallen Fund has now reached € 1,169,865. This Fund is not meant to be distributed but rather to be capitalised and its financial income to be used to partly compensate for UFB operating expenses. • The donors to cover the balance of operating expenses gave € 80,733.
Special Tributes The UFB Board and team would like to thank two very special people who have been active at UFB for many years. A special thank you goes to Leonard Schrank of SWIFT. During his 15 years at the helm of SWIFT as the longest serving CEO, Leonard Schrank has supported UFB in an exceptional way: hosting the UFB offices, offering all the necessary support for office accommodation, major contributions over the years… Your support was exceptional.
Dick Betlem has been a volunteer at UFB for many years. First as CEO of Albemarle, and later on as active member of the Board and the Fund-raising committee and a key driver behind the IHC movement. Thank you for all you have done over those years. We will miss you both.

Lots of happy faces TIMBER - Bruxelles Nous sommes un centre de jour pour adultes présentant une déficience mentale. Nous accueillons 20 personnes âgées de 20 à 40 ans dont le handicap varie entre léger et modéré. Le projet pédagogique du centre est l’insertion de la personne par le travail d’exploitation forestière et la reconnaissance de ce travail par des loisirs sportifs et culturels. La récompense pour ces « bûcherons » est la livraison du bois de chauffage chez les particuliers ce qui implique des interactions avec l’acheteur, la mise en évidence de transaction financière pour le travail qu’ils ont accompli. Ils sont aussi très fiers du matériel qui est mis à leur disposition pour toutes ces tâches forestières car il est «pareil» que les autres bûcherons. Ils accomplissent du bon travail et sont d’ailleurs fort appréciés par les forestiers et les bûcherons professionnels. Merci... semble “... Grâce à l’intervention d’UFB, nous disposons d’un petit camion double cabine. Ce véhicule permet à la fois le transport des personnes handicapées, du matériel forestier ainsi que les bûches de bois. Les bûches sont soit ramenées sur le chantier de stockage soit livrées chez les clients. C’est parce qu’ensemble nous donnons le meilleur de nous pour un sourire.

‘T VELD - REVALIDATIECENTRUM - Aartrijke Wij doen multidisciplinair onderzoek en behandeling van 70 kinderen en adolescenten met ernstige ontwikkelingsstoornissen ( tussen 18 maanden en 6 jaar) en van kinderen met een mentale handicap (t.e.m. 13 jaar). Dankzij de steun van UFB kan de instelling aangepaste speeltoestellen aanschaffen. Deze speelweide dient gesitueerd te worden binnen het therapeutisch kader voor de kinderen : het oefenen van de motoriek, zelfcontrole en zelfbeheersing, veiligheidsbesef, sociale vaardigheden,... Vroeger konden er geenbuitenactiviteiten aangeboden worden. Dit werd als een duidelijk tekort aangevoeld. De hulp van het UFB brengt dan ook een enorme meerwaarde teweeg voor onze organisatie en voor het algemeen welbevinden van de kinderen. Hartelijk dank.

Nous sommes une maison d’accueil pour personnes sans-abri : hommes et familles. Nous offrons du logement individuel et communautaire. UFB a pris en charge les frais de la sécurité incendie lors de la rénovation d’un nouveau bâtiment destiné à l’accueil des familles. Cette nouvelle structure permet d’accueillir plus de familles (56 en 2006) et des familles nombreuses. L’espace communautaire permet aux travailleurs sociaux d’organiser diverses activités destinées aux enfants et aux parents. Un tout grand merci d’autant plus que le contact avec la firme Albemarle a été magnifique.

De Stobbe is een Centrum voor Integrale Gezinszorg, dat instaat voor de opvang en begeleiding van 33 gezinnen waarbij het gezinsfunctioneren zo problematisch is dat het verderzetten zonder meer schadelijk kan zijn voor één of meerdere gezinsleden. De belangen van de kinderen staan voor ons voorop. We beschikken over drie opvangmogelijkheden afhankelijk van de gezinssituatie. Bijvoorbeeld, negen alleenstaande moeders en hun kinderen kunnen in een leefgroep begeleiding krijgen. Na een tijd kunnen zij eventueel terecht in 5 studio’s. Of anderen komen terecht in appartementen of kunnen thuis of in de overgang naar zelfstandig wonen een begeleiding op maat krijgen. Elke dag zien wij deze mensen trachten een nieuw leven op te bouwen. Ze hebben onze steun nodig. Dankzij de steun van UFB kunnen wij een gedeelte van onze opvangshuizen verfrissen en inrichten. Deze hulp is een opsteker voor onze gezinnen. Hartelijk dank. Stobbe-team

In-house fun(d)-raising campaigns CITIBANK
This year, we also organised a “big furniture sale”.
«Corporate Social Responsibility is no longer an option for successful business. It is an imperative. Each year Citibank launches its UFB in-house campaign with a breakfast for all staff and we match each donation made by the staff during the whole year. D’autres activités sont organisées au sein de nos bureaux afin de récolter des fonds; il s’agit notamment d’une dégustation et d’une vente de vins au profit de l’UFB, une vente d’articles de cadeaux de fin d’année, l’impression de nos cartes de Noël. Nous allons encore plus loin. All employees are now eligible for one additional day off a year to volunteer for a non-profit of their choice, supported by UFB… »

During an all employee meeting, this action was introduced by our General Manager Laurent Kirsch. The institution “Grain de Vie”, was invited to present its project and its way of working. This was a great success and the collected amount was doubled by Abbott. By making many people happy and experiencing such events, you don’t know who gives and who receives the most! Thilda Coquel JPMORGAN “In December 2006, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Brussels office organised our annual Global Day of Service, and as in previous years, almost 75% of our small team turned out to help. Our project was in Brainel’Alleud, in a home for mentally ill people, called Chrysalis. It’s a small home, housing up to about 10 people of all ages. But the small, family atmosphere is important since most have little or no contact with their own relatives. We only had a few minutes to meet the residents, before they left on a day trip. But we were happy to have spent the day trying to brighten up their environment.”
PROCTER & GAMBLE Each year the list of in-house fun(d)raising activities at P&G is growing. In Mechelen, a motorcycle event was organised with many participants and enthusiastic employees.

Donaldson Europe has organised for the very first time, an « employee donation program ». Two charities were selected in the Leuven region : OIKOTEN and BEGELEID WONEN. The IHC was launched during the Company Strategic meeting. UFB was invited to participate. Both charities could be supported with the help of Donaldson.
ALBEMARLE This year, “ASBL Maison Marie-Louise” in Verviers (shelter for homeless people) was chosen as the charity that Albemarle wanted to support via their IHC. The project was the installation of the fire detection equipment in the newly added wing of the building, a project very close to the activities of Albemarle products. A very enthusiastic team launched the campaign: teddy bear sales, Christmas cards sales, direct pledges for the employees and the corporate matching. A fun event “Swim & Run” was organised. ABBOTT Abbott as a company is highly involved in corporate social responsibility not only financially but also in person. The management of the company motivates its personnel to participate yearly in a “global commitment day”. The “Residence Lennox” in Ottignies was chosen this year. On top of activities such as window cleaning, gardening, painting, knitting, etc... a barbecue was organised for the residents which created a very privileged contact between the handicapped persons and the Abbott participants. In addition to the yearly donation, Abbott donated the proceeds of a customer survey to the UFB. A nice amount could be transferred to UFB.
WESTINGHOUSE The IHC was officially started with a beautiful breakfast buffet in the presence of all the employees of Westinghouse. Two charities presented their institutions (Accueil Familiale d’Urgence Nivelles and Eigen Thuis – Grimbergen). Many fund-raising activities were launched that day such as a Bingo night, a Ping Pong Tournament, a fun tombola, a World Cup Forecast event and many more… The famous in-house talent and cabaret show “Wollies” closed the campaign. It was fun working with the highly motivated team of volunteers. Also this year, Westinghouse participated with many teams at the UFB Golf Tournament. Thank you! IBM It is impressive to see that each year a mailing is done to all the IBM employees and Alumni to support the UFB. Grete Moons has been doing this for many years. DONALDSON
In Brussels, second-hand toys were gathered and donated, markets were organised, Easter eggs and waffles were sold, a marathon event raised an impressive amount, and the P&G volunteer Day was organised for the 4th time this year thanks to a very motivated team of volunteers. This year, a children’s school in Ghent was painted by a team of 30 P&G employees. (see article on the Community Days page 6)

EUROCLEAR Record amount donated by employees to United Fund for Belgium. Every year, employees in Brussels are asked if they would like to make a donation to the United Fund for Belgium. This year, we raised a record amount and Euroclear has again matched it. The Christmas sale is organised every year with the help of committed employees using their network and selling skills to reach a new sales record. Euroclear also supports the UFB organisation of the Golf tournament by contributing in part to the employees’ participation fees to the event. Dit jaar werd een opvangtehuis voor alleenstaande moeders uitgekozen in Waals Brabant die beroep deden op de steun van UFB voor de renovatie van hun oude keuken.Via een goed georganiseerde verkoop van UFBproducten in de diverse vestigingen in het ganse land, heeft DHL bij haar werknemers geld ingezameld. Als extra stimulans werd elke euro die de werknemers gegeven hebben, door DHL verdubbeld ! De campagne was een groot succes. Deze werd nog aangespijsd door een grote bestelling paaseitjes ten voordele van hun werknemers. Veel werk en energie is in deze campagne gegaan ! On June 12, the National Bank of Belgium hosted the yearly handover ceremony in the presence of her Royal Highness Princess Mathilde. All the 99 selected charities were present to receive their specific UFB support. UFB celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
Each year, the campaign is launched in the residence of the American Ambassador to Belgium. Many donors presented their pledges or cheques to Christian Jacobs, President of United Fund for Belgium.
5 th Charity Golf Tournament at the Royal Waterloo Golf Club The 5 th Annual Charity Golf Tournament was held at the Royal Waterloo Golf Club and was a big success. Over 29 flights and more than 100 participants were present that day. The event raised over € 30,000 (gross) for United Fund for Belgium and will be distributed to the many Belgian projects that are supported. By participating in this event, companies can invite business partners for a nice game of golf and support the charity projects of the UFB. Again many competition prizes and raffles were distributed after a nice evening dinner. The hole-in one was sponsored by Cégéac this year with a beautiful Ford Mondeo Trend 1.8 TDCi.
Special thanks goes to Westinghouse for taking many flights that day and to Denis Heskin for being such a strong supporter to UFB in the organisation for the upcoming Pro-Am Golf Tournament in September 2007. Congratulations to all the winners that day and especially to the Westinghouse team who won the UFB trophy for best team.

Belgian Legal Awards
For the third year in a row, United Fund for Belgium organised together with Ralph Lauren a Charity Christmas sale in their store in Brussels. Many people attended the fashion show and the atmosphere was very cheerful. The UFB received 15% of the sales that evening. Thank you to all the generous buyers.
The Belgian Legal Awards, second edition, took place in February 2007. More than 610 lawyers and legal counsels participated in the event. Daniel Ost Nocturne in Tour & Taxi Each year, UFB sells Christmas cards with beautiful pictures of Daniel Ost floral designs. These cards were also sold during the Nocturne that took place in Tour&Taxi. Many cards were sold to the fans of Daniel Ost. Thank you to the organisers for making us part of this event. Canadian Embassy Thank you for having chosen UFB as the beneficiary for the proceeds of your Bowling evening. When I retired from SWIFT in November 2006, I wanted to spend some of my free time helping a charity. I contacted the UFB who were very happy to accept my offer of help. I enjoy the work very much. It is very varied and the UFB team is very enthusiastic and dynamic. I am amazed that such a small team accomplishes so much ! My main task is to help implement a new software program to help with the administration. For this I enlisted the support of a SWIFT colleague, Travis Dobias, who is an expert in this domain. Together we conducted a needs analysis amongst UFB staff, and also surveyed available programs. We are now conducting a pilot project, using Salesforce.com and will evaluate the results at the end of the year. However I also help with other tasks. In December I sold Christmas cards at SWIFT. At Easter I sold Easter eggs and fluffy toys at SWIFT and Alcatel. (The task of packaging the delicious chocolate eggs added inches to my waistline !) In June the UFB hosted the United Way Regional Meeting and I helped to coordinate the arrangements for participants from Russia, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, the USA etc… In addition I help when necessary with processing the bank statements, updating the database, and other admin tasks. In short the work is very varied and always interesting. I strongly encourage others who are interested in volunteering to contact UFB (
