Introduction This document is the first publication list of the Research Centre for Arts in Society in its new configuration. We welcomed new researchers with new research areas, which of course also increases the output. This year the members of the centre signed for up to 153 publications, including 20 books. Publications were not only published in Dutch and English, but also in French, German, Italian, Norwegian and Russian, which immediately demonstrates the international scope of Arts in Society. By the kind of publications - both popularizing and peer-reviewed academic articles – one can observe the centre’s capacity to participate in local and international, scientific and public, and fundamental and applied debates concerning the arts. We hope that some of the publications will arouse your curiosity. You can find a digital version of this list on our website www.rug.nl/research/arts-in-society, so that you can read some of the articles via hyperlink. If you are interested in other publications, please contact us or the authors themselves. Pascal Gielen, Coordinator Research Centre for Arts in Society

Jan de Jong Books Jong, Jan de (2013) The Power and the Glorification. Papal Pretensions and the Art of Propaganda in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries (The Pennsylvania State University Press. ISBN: 978-0-271-05079-9). 208 pages, 31 color/93 b&w illustrations Book chapters Jong, J. de (2013) ‘Transplantation and Salvation’, in: Kees W. Zimmerman (ed), One Leg in the Grave Revisited. The Miracle of the Transplantation of the Black Leg by the Saints Cosmas and Damian, Eelde (Barkhuis Publishing), 2013, 37-49. ISBN: 9789491431234. Focusing on a turbulent time in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, The Power and the Glorification considers how, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the papacy employed the visual arts to help reinforce Catholic power structures. All means of propaganda were deployed to counter the papacy’s eroding authority in the wake of the Great Schism of 1378 and in response to the upheaval surrounding the Protestant Reformation a century later. In the Vatican and elsewhere in Rome, extensive decorative cycles were commissioned to represent the strength of the church and historical justifications for its supreme authority. Replicating the contemporary viewer’s experience is central to De Jong’s approach, and he encourages readers to consider 29
the works through fifteenth- and sixteenth-century eyes. De Jong argues that most visitors would only have had a limited knowledge of the historical events represented in these works, and they would likely have accepted (or been intended to accept) what they saw at face value. With that end in mind, the painters’ advisors did their best to “manipulate” the viewer accordingly, and De Jong discusses their strategies and methods. From the cover: “This book sheds a powerful light on the great historical frescoes of High Renaissance Rome. Jan de Jong dwells on the historical situation of the popes, the meanings of history in Renaissance Europe, and the responses of contemporary viewers to these paintings. He teaches us how to see these grand and fascinating works as they were meant to be seen—and, at the same time, suggests some of the reasons why they did not have their full intended effects.” —Anthony Grafton, Princeton University “Jan de Jong presents us with the first systematic study of the genre of political propaganda, invented in the sixteenth century. The author shows how the papacy, under pressure from religious and secular rivals, honed and fashioned the message of its narratives to present an image broadcasting its empyrean status. The pope’s authority was underscored by showing the emperor and kings kissing his foot. His right to rule the Papal States was justified by depicting Constantine making a gift to Pope Sylvester of the lands of his western empire. The role of the pope as adjudicator and peacemaker was authenticated by representing Paul III brokering the peace between Charles V and Francis I—even if that fragile treaty lasted only a handful of years. The political propaganda pioneered in the projects studied here provided a model followed by the courts of Europe up to and beyond Napoleon’s. De Jong gives us a fresh and vivid account, some of it based on material hardly studied before.” — Marcia Hall, Temple University

Sjoerd-Jeroen Moenandar Books Moenandar, S.J. (2013). Depraved Borderlands. Meetings With Muslims in Dutch Literature and the Public Debate. Hamburg: Peter Lang.
Nowhere has Western public distrust towards Islam been as strong as in the Netherlands. This book provides a thorough discussion of Dutch multicultural society seen through the lens of literature. The literary work of four important contemporary writers – Kader Abdolah, Robert Anker, Abdelkader Benali and Hafid Bouazza – is analysed alongside the public debate about the encounter between Islam and the West. The author sketches the cultural matrix from which these texts stem and in which they intervene in a specifically literary way. This study makes available a host of data on Dutch literature and public debate and will be indispensable for scholars of contemporary Dutch culture. It is the first time that several of these authors, some of international fame, are discussed extensively in an English language book. Moreover, the author offers a new approach to the study of so-called transcultural, or multicultural, literature that will be of interest to scholars of comparative literature.
