Membership Research Schools and other Research Institutes The research program is embedded in two research schools, both recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences. Most of the research in the program is conducted within the Research School for Experimental Psychopathology (EPP). A small part of the program is embedded in the Research School for Experimental Psychology (EPOS). 5. Research topics The mission of our research group is the development of theoretical models to understand the etiology and maintenance of psychiatric disorders and to develop theory-based interventions. The main subjects of research in the program are: 1. Experimental Clinical Psychology 2. Developmental psychopathology 3. Applied Clinical psychology

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
6. Program development (1) Experimental Clinical Psychology. This program focuses on psychological and biological processes that are involved in emotional memory. Future studies will focus on the role of stress hormones in the process of encoding, consolidation and retrieval. The differential processing of emotional compared to neutral information appears to be strongly related to the amount of arousal that accompanies that information. Some experimental human studies have already been carried out on the role of noradrenaline in this process and will be extended to the role of cortisol and the interaction between these two stress hormones. fMRI scanning studies are planned to elucidate the neuro-anatomical correlates of these processes and the effect of arousal provoking as well as arousal reducing drugs on brain activation and memory performance. Also research on emotional memory and(meta-)memory disturbances observed in traumatized individuals and in obsessive-compulsive disorders will be continued. A new line of research will be developed on the plasticity of emotional memory. This line of research is aimed at delineating the psychological mechanisms of behaviour change in emotional disorders. That is, mechanisms of emotional behaviour change and individual differences will be investigated in experimental designs focused directly on factors influencing the extinction and learning of new associations. Although we will initially test our hypotheses in an aversive conditioning paradigm as a model for anxiety, the focus will be on general principles that cut across various emotional disorders. Our earlier work on the psychophysiology of the sexual response inspired new research on sexual motivation. We are focusing on motor preparation as a useful window on the subjectively experienced emotion and on the physiological, observable aspects of sexual desire and behavior. In addition, we investigate gender differences in the sensitivity to sexual stimuli. These gender differences are studied using psycho-physiological as well as fMRI research methods. Finally, our research findings are used to generate new models of women’s and men's sexual dysfunctions. Our research on symptom perception will be continued. In experimental as well as field studies, we apply the symptom perception model to medically unexplained complaints associated with various illnesses and symptoms (e.g. somatization, cardiovascular disease, asthma). A new line of research with respect to symptom perception concerns individual differences in cardiovascular reactivity. In experimental studies we investigate the effect of the match between person characteristics and meaning of the stressor, in particular between the strength of identification with culture or gender and the culture or gender relevance of the stressor.

ANNUAL REPORT 2005
(2) Developmental Psychopathology. This program deals with anxious children and children with externalising disorders. Our current research is aimed at testing the cognitive explanation of anxiety disorders in children. Our experimental research on anxious children combines paradigms of automatic information processing and controlled information processing. This will be related to treatment-outcome research, examining cognitive mechanisms of behaviour change in anxiety disordered children. With regard to externalising disorders, attention is directed at the development of theory-driven parent and child interventions that more effectively will impact the primary symptoms of ADHD. Further, we are currently involved in a longitudinal study on the aetiology and development of ADHD-symptoms in young children. (3) Applied Clinical Psychology This line of research addresses the evaluation of cognitive-behavioural interventions in adult disorders. Intervention studies are conducted in (1) obsessive-compulsive disorder, (2) post-traumatic stress, (3) burn-out, (4) avoidant personality disorder, and (5) patients with substance abuse (alcohol dependence and cocaine dependence). Further, research is carried out into endocrine and immunological changes as a result of cognitive-behavioural interventions. Finally, the process of exposure in phobic patients and obsessive-compulsive patients will be investigated in PET-scan studies. A new development concerns the investigation of the value of technological developments such as the Internet and virtual reality technology for the treatment of patients with anxiety disorders. We investigate the potential of programs to prevent the development of (post-traumatic) stress and relapse in depression. Finally, we study the phenomenology of anxiety disorders in the elderly and investigate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural interventions in the elderly. Another new development concerns research into forensic clinical psychology. Studies in this area involve the evaluation of cognitive-behavioral program in a TBS population, and the study of risk factors for violent (sexual) offending in forensic psychiatric patients, including stalking. The studies will yield results on the differential effectiveness of several risk assessment tools in the prediction of (violent) offending, and can have important implications for future policy and forensic psychological practice. Another new development concerns research on the relations between culturally shaped illness beliefs and treatment-outcome. Utilizing a comprehensive approach, we examine (1) the influence of personal and situational factors on the presentation of these beliefs, (2) therapy-related belief change among patients, and (3) the effect of therapist-patient belief similarity on treatment outcome.
