» Liberec 2012 – a City of Sport
Liberec is the 2nd Czech city after Prague to be included among the European cities of sports by the European Capitals of Sport Association. The title of the European City of Sport has been awarded since 2001, but only European metropolises with more than half a million inhabitants can receive this award. This year, the title has been awarded to Istanbul in Turkey. Awards in the category of smaller cities have gone to Liberec, Preston in Great Britain and Florence in Italy.
Catalogue of Costume » The Jewellery and Glass Companies Glassmaking and the production of costume jewellery have been associated with the Jizera Mountains since time immemorial. There is still demand for this “Jizera silver” and for this rea‑ son a new Catalogue of Costume Jewellery and Glass Companies in the Jablonec and Železný Brod areas has been published. The printed version is available at the local information centres, while the electronic version is available at www.jablonec.com.
» The Hospital in Frýdlant
The listed building of the Hospital (a twostoried baroque building) has been renovated. A modern interactive exhibition which shows the structural development of the historical town centre and square, the craft skills of the inhabitants and the history and mission of the Hospital itself has been established on its ground floor.
Harrachov glassworks is » The 300 years old The glassworks in Harrachov is the oldest private glassworks in Bohemia. It was estab‑ lished before 1712 in the Jilemnice estate of the Counts of Harrach. The traditional methods of production have been preserved and it can now boast a unique 100 year-old glass cutting workshop powered by transmissions and a water turbine. Extensive celebrations have been prepared for the summer in honour of this tradition.
Summer gets up early: let us do the same. In the early morning, it is possible to see many things which a mere mortal never sees. For ex‑ ample, a spider’s web or a blade of grass with drops of dew which look like the rarest jewels. And not only do they look like that, but they are! We, the people of the 21st century, should know that the greatest treasure which abides in the Jizera Mountains is not gold or precious stones, but water. And this treasure manifests itself in every drop hanging on a spider’s web or on a blade of grass. As such, peat bogs are the true treasure house. So many drops are stored there! Imagine that the peat bog moss, which is the main plant there, has even acquired little pockets in which to store the water. And that is far from its only peculiarity. It is also the plant which covers the greatest area of the Earth’s surface and it can be used as a fuel, a fertiliser and a medicine. But not only peat moss grows in the peat bogs. Many other plants grow there, some of which are highly peculiar and only grow in this location. You probably know the common sundew (it is the one which improves its diet with insects), but there is also the spoonleaf sundew which is highly rare and can only be found on Polish side of the Jizera Mountains. And even if the plants were not interesting simply for being rare and strange, there are still their names which absolutely

wonderful. I sometimes think that they could also be suitable names for peat bog fairies. Just try closing your eyes and imagining what Rannoch‑rush, bog rosemary, black crowberry or water brickweed look like. Like knights with white plumes, the tussock cottongrass and common cottongrass ensure that nobody disturbs the peace of the peat bogs. Their smaller cousin, the tufted bulrush, envies their splendour, but if it was not for them, the first frost would not colour the open upper slopes a beautiful rusty brown. Orchids can also be found. They are admittedly a little more modest than the ones which can be seen in the Liberec Botanical Gardens, but they are beautiful for all that. And they are called the moorland spotted orchid and the common spotted orchid. The plants which grow here have often travelled across continents to find their home here in the Jizera Mountains. And the stiff club moss or inundated club moss have even travelled across time from the ancient Palaeozoic Era. In short, the peat bogs of the Jizera Mountains are a remarkable world which is worth getting to know, protecting and loving.

The celebration of 110 years of the rack-and-pinion railway This year, our steepest and only rack-and-pinion line from Tanvald to Kořenov and the connected Kořenov – Harrachov – Szklarska Poręba line will celebrate their 110th anniversary. Large celebrations have been prepared for 6th to 8th July 2012. Special passenger trains will travel between Tanvald and Kořenov; they will be pulled by unique series T4256.0 rack-and-pinion locomotives which were made in 1961 by the Austrian SGP Vienna locomotive works and are therefore nicknamed “Austrians” (“Rakušanka”). Special passenger trains with a steam locomotive will travel between Kořenov and Szklarská Poręba and a substantial program has been prepared at the Kořenov Railway Station: an exhibition of historical automobiles, military technology, live music, dance ensemble performances, theatre performances, horse and carriage rides and historical buses to Jizerka. Come and celebrate the significant anniversary of this unique railway. We are looking forward to seeing you. More information at www.zubacka.cz or by telephone at 603 179 136.

How does this sound? “Industrial monuments” “Attractions from the industry and technology of the Nisa Euroregion” No matter how it sounds, this involves an important cross-border project for the Czech Republic and Poland in 2007-2013, which is being co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development. The project organiser is the Giant Mountains Agency for Regional Development (Krkonošská agentura pro regionální rozvoj, a.s.) in Jelenia Gora, while the project’s partner is the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic or the District Chamber of Commerce in Jablonec nad Nisou. And what is its goal? To present and offer regional points of industrial interest in the Czech-Polish border area not only to visitors and tourists to the region and therefore to extend the num-
tourism in Central Europe and not every visitor wants to go cycling, cross-country skiing or downhill skiing. And what’s more, what can you do in summer when the weather is not so good? We can offer you the opportunity to have a look at something, to try something out, to touch something … And what can you discover and get to know? Hydraulic structures (for example, the Harta hydroelectric power station, the Nebákov mill and the Pilchowice power station …), transport structures (for example, the Hradčany Track (Hradčanská cesta), the Smržovka viaduct and the railway bridge in Kowary…), the history and present of glassmaking (for example, the Kamenářský House in Turnov, the Vitrum glassworks
Sedmihorky or Swieradov) or the opportunity to tour areas underground (for example, the Dědičná tunnel in Chrastava or the mines of Kowary). The entire list of technical and industrial structures is described at www.prumyslovepamatky.cz and it is even possible to take a virtual tour of some of the monuments there. Brochures and a special map have been published for “real tourists” and materials are available for guides: all of these materials are available at the information centres of the Liberec Region.

The Singletracks under Smrk The Singletracks under Smrk are the first network of singletracks in the Czech Republic designed for maximum bike riding enjoyment which has been built with maximum care and respect for nature. A singletrack is a narrow natural trail which winds among trees and never goes too straight, too much downhill or too much uphill. It copies the forest environment and thus offers a wonderful riding experi‑ ence to a wide spectrum of visitors. It is necessary to adhere to certain rules on the track and to truly only ride in one direction in the parts of the section. The circuit connecting Lázně Libverda and Nové Město pod Smrkem is 18 km long, of which 12 km consists of singletracks and 6 km leads along existing forest roads. The singletrack will appeal to everybody who likes cycling, trails and nature. Fitness or technical skill is not decisive. You can choose trails and circuits from four levels of difficulty which will suit you and from which you return with a smile on your face
The green trail for everybody A wider natural trail which is also suitable for beginners, smaller children and handicapped individuals.
The most important cycle trails Jizera Cross Country Skiing Network – this was originally established as a route »for»The cross-country skiing, but the fact that most of the route leads along maintained tracks
which are suitable for cyclists meant that it soon also became popular among cyclists, www.jizerskaops.cz. The Jára Cimrman Cycle Trail – www.tanvaldsko.info, www.tanvald.cz. The Mill Cycle Trail (Cyklostezka Mlýnská) – www.lunaria-jindrichovice.cz/cyklostezka. The cycling circuits around Štěpánka – www.jizerkyprovas.cz. The Krakonoš Trail ER-2 – a cycle trail which leads through the wonderful setting of the Lusatian and Jizera Mountains from Bad Schandau in Germany through Frýdlant, Nové Město pod Smrkem, the northern slopes of the Polish Giant Mountains and on to Lubawka. The Oder-Nisa international cycle trail – a 591 km long trail leading across the territory of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. It starts as cycle trail no. 3038 at the spring of the Lusatian Nisa near the town of Nová Ves nad Nisou and leads to the mouth of the Oder at the Baltic Sea, www.nisaops.cz, www.oderneisse-radweg.de. The Smugglers’ Cycle Trail – a 40 km long trail with four stops, it connects the microregions of the Hrádek, Chrastava and Frýdlant areas. It passes in close proximity to the border with Germany and Poland and sometimes crosses it, where it offers the option of connecting to the local cycle trails. The single track under Smrk – this involves the first network of single track trails in the Czech Republic which has been designed to provide maximum cycling enjoyment, www.singltrekpodsmrkem.cz.

The blue singletrack – easy singletrack trails A singletrack which is suitable for beginners, children, families with children and other cyclists who have cycling skills, but have not yet had experience of riding in terrain The red single track – medium difficulty singletrack trails The red singletrack presents the ride dynamic along forest trails. The black singletrack – demanding singletrack trails The black singletrack requires a degree of certainty over the control of the bicycle and maximum concentration when riding. The Singletrack Centre,
[email protected], www.singltrekcentrum.cz The Singletrack Centre is the place from where the singletracks branch out. Due to its position at the very heart of the network and the excellent access to the trails, it was chosen as the official entrance point at the very beginning of the project planning. Its unique position near a natural outdoor swimming pool with a view of Mount Smrk is just right for resting and sitting a while after your ride. As well as a beautiful and calm environment, the Singletrack Centre also offers facilities and services (not only) for cyclists which are unique within the framework of the Czech Republic. As well as the essentials (for example, toilets, showers, chang‑ ing rooms, a bicycle wash, refreshments or a children’s playground), there is also a nearby shop with cycle equipment and a bike testing area. The earnings from the operation of the Singletrack Centre significantly contribute to the financing of the network of tracks. Thanks to the concept and quality of the services, the Singletrack Centre and the entire destination of the Singletracks under Smrk have become the first destination in Europe to receive the IMBA RIDE CENTER award. TOURIST
ATTRACTIONS
The Oder – Nisa… or following the Nisa River In search of water Everybody now knows that water is essential for life. The Jizera Mountains currently offer sufficient supplies of it, and not only of water which is fed to households as drinking water. Water was also especially used as a cheap form of energy in this region in the past. It drove machines in saw mills and smaller glass workshops, as well as in large textile works or glass cutting plants. Even now, it is still possible to find the remains of water reservoirs and partially filled‑in head races in the Jizera Mountains. Water is a good servant, but an evil master. Flooding quite regularly destroyed the efforts of the people who had settled under the mountains and had begun to build up the industry there. This forced the people to build
dams on the main water courses. Their initial function was to prevent flood damage, but also to provide water in times of drought. Water is, however, also a significant landscaping element. The northern features of the Jizera Mountain landscape have also been formed by swamps with peat bog pools, mountain streams, steep ravines with streams and waterfalls, but also by human creations, such as reservoirs and fishponds. Let us return to our original sentence on how water is essential for life. We should therefore treat it in such a way so that we always have enough clean water. Otokar Simm
THE NISA RIVER Motto: Let us not forget that there exists a space in which everybody can reliably draw strength … The peace of nature exhilarates us, no matter whether this involves the wonders of exceptional beauty which amazes us and helps us forget about everyday matters or simply small miracles which are the gems of our country. We head off to the green countryside for refreshment and strength. Nature is not only a place for sport or a backdrop for entertainment. Its secret lies much deeper and it is willing to give us much more. Let us therefore enter the energy of the river current … the energy of the Nisa River. (according to M. Hejná) The Nisa River (the Lusatian Nisa) begins its 252 km long pilgrimage at the edge of the municipality of Nová Ves nad Nisou near Jablonec nad Nisou. A monument was built at its spring in 1980 and nowadays this is a frequent destination, both for hikers and cyclists. It is also the starting point for the long‑distance Nisa‑Oder cycle trail which can take you all the way to the Baltic Sea. The turnoff from the green hiking trail between Jablonecké Paseky and Smržovka (it also leads to the nearby Nisanka lookout tower) or the Smržovka hiking circuit (the black and white markings) leads to the spring. The best access for cyclists is from the road between Nová Ves and Lučany. The Nisa initially flows to the south, to Jablonec nad Nisou where it calms and flows through a densely settled landscape. Nowadays, the Lusatian Nisa is fed by the White Nisa, on which the Mšeno reservoir (the Jablonec valley reservoir) was
created in the period from 1906 to 1910 with a 20 metre high concrete dam. The reservoir is fed by underground tunnels from the White Nisa and from the Lusatian Nisa and it serves as a protection against high water and as a recreation area for the inhabitants of Jablonec. Another city in the Lusatian Nisa valley is Liberec which developed thanks to woollen cloth manufacture and later the textile industry. Liberec and its urban heritage zone boast a renaissance château dating from the 16th century connected with a newer château dating from the 18th century and a neo‑renaissance town hall. The oldest monuments are the half‑timbered so‑called Wallenstein Houses in Větrná Street dating from the 17th century. The Liberec zoological gardens are one of the oldest in this country and they were established in 1904. The botanical gardens dating from 1876 are located nearby. Ještěd (1012 m above sea level), the highest mountain in the Ještěd Ridge, is the dominant feature which belongs inseparably to Liberec. The river leaves the densely settled area near Machnín below Liberec, it flows around a promontory with the remains of Castle Hamrštejn and a nature reserve of the same name on the castle peak and flows through Chrastava, the original settlement of the Lusatian Serbs, and the old mining municipality of Bílý Kostel nad Nisou. The river leaves the Czech Republic below Hrádek nad Nisou. The river’s largest tributaries in our territory are the White Nisa from the left and the Black Nisa and Jeřice from the right.
Jizera Mountain rivers Several main rivers drain water from the Jizera Mountains. We have mentioned most of them in the paragraph on river springs. They are the Jizera, the Kamenice, the Nisa and the Smědá, while the smaller ones include the Desná or the Jeřice. When looking at a map, however, several other small rivers are also bound to attract attention. Let us take a short look at two of the most significant ones. The Jizera has given its name to the entire mountain range. It rises at the highest point of the local large rivers and its length up to its confluence with the Elbe at Lázně
Toušeň is approximately 165 km. The upper reaches of the Jizera form part of the state border between the Czech Republic and Poland. The Lusatian Nisa gradually encompasses the Black and the White Nisa. Its length in the Czech territory is approximately 55 km, but it measures a considerable 252 km up to its confluence with the Oder. After leaving the Czech Republic, it forms the border between Germany and Poland. This border was marked out in association with the political changes after the Second World War. This also underlines its historical significance. Otokar Simm

The legend of Nisanka the Fairy Some think that she originally had no name. Others think that she is named after the river which she protects, while others are convinced that the river was named after her. A whole range of theories about the fairy’s genesis and origins exist. From those stating that she has been here since time immemorial through to those stating that she was created from the purest water in the world, that she was born together with the first drop of the Nisa River and on to the hypothesis that she was born of the mist, water, water algae, clay and stones or also from twenty species of fish … Some think that her mother is the Earth, the Sea or one of the other fairy protectors. According to others, she was also once a person. She either drowned as a small girl and became a fairy or she became a fairy in adulthood after she had previously protected and cleaned the river during her life. And what does the fairy look like? The fairy is vitally connected with her river and so she changes with it. Moreover, she is a woman, so it is no wonder that she occasionally feels the need to change her appearance. She is beautiful. She has long hair, whose colour is perceived differently by everybody: from white and silver through to blond or blue, green or black as she dances in the sun. She sometimes wears her hair in a plait which forms three streams. One stream is black according to the Black Nisa, the second is white from the White Nisa and the third (the green one) is from the
forest through which the Lusatian Nisa flows. She wears a wreath of meadow flowers or veils of mist on her head. She is most frequently clothed in white, blue or mutable clothing which is similar to water waves and her clothes change according to the seasons. In the past century, she was apparently seen in the guise of a worried woman with greasy hair and dirty clothes messed with paint, solvents, oil and various slops which people had released into the Nisa. Nisanka is a vegetarian, because she loves animals above all. She lives on forest fruit and draws her strength from the pure water in the springs. She is essentially joined with the water in the river and with its inhabitants, especially the fish. If the fish disappear, Nisanka will leave. If the water dries up, Nisanka will die with the river. Her task is to protect and look after the Nisa River and its spring. Every day, she takes care to ensure that the water flows well and she modifies the water’s surface so that it shines. She takes care of all the living and non-living things in the river and around it. Naturally, she also has her assistants. They are small and large fish, animals, birds, Muhu the spirit of the Jizera Mountains, the wind, various sprites, dwarfs, other fairies and people, ecologists and environmentalists, both adults and children. Only good, friendly and unselfish people can see Nisanka … Source: the Giant Mountains/Jizera Mountains Magazine/Dája Spalková
Jizera Mountain springs Rivers rise in the Jizera Mountains quietly and inconspicuously. They gather their strength in the spring areas on the slopes of forested mountains, in peat bog wetlands or in meadows overgrown with dwarf mountain pine. Most of them arise at the confluence of several streams: the Smědá arises from the confluence of the White, Brown and Black Smědá, the Kamenice is the offspring of the Large and Small Kamenice Streams and the Nisa has even more springs The only exception is the Jizera which rises on slopes of Smrk. The springs of the Jizera Mountain rivers are usually not
signposted. The only exception is the spring of the Lučany Nisa which is located in the cadastral area of Nová Ves nad Nisou. So why is this one signposted? The reason can be found in the proximity of a number of towns and municipalities - in tourist centres. At present, the Lučany Nisa is considered to be the main tributary to the Lusatian Nisa. Several years ago, the spring of the Jizera was also signposted thanks to the activities of Mr Stanislav Zajíc from Semily. However, it lies off the track and is therefore not regularly accessible.
To the spring of the Nisa Jablonecké Paseky (public transport) – Kynast (1.5 km) – the Feix Cross – the Nisanka lookout tower (3 km) – U Třech lip – the spring of the Nisa – Smržovka, TGM Square (4.5 km). The walk starts in Jablonecké Paseky, either at the Pasecky Square or at the railway station. The route follows the green markings. Cross the railway track at the railway station and follow the green markings past the retirement home up to Kynast. The site of the retirement home formerly housed a water therapy spa which was established in 1893 by Adolf Tischer. Thanks to this, the municipality was able to use the official name Bad Schlag (Paseky Spa) from 1894. The sanatorium included an expansive park with several granite monuments. They still stand in the unmaintained garden; unfortunately, it has not been possible to designate whom they were bequeathed to. In the past, the name Kynast was used for the small mountain ridge stretching from Paseky to Smržovka. A popular restaurant which was built at the edge of the forest at the beginning of the 20th century (currently closed) also bore the same name. Views of the distant environs gradually open up during the next section of the track. You will shortly come to a track intersection where the renewed Feix Crross stands. It was erected there by the Feix brothers in 1829 in memory of their deceased father (1824). This cultural monument underwent general repairs in 2011; this was realised by the municipality of Nová Ves nad Nisou and the Nová Ves Beautification Association.

The easy ridge track continues to the Nisanka lookout tower. A telecommunications pylon has stood on the site at a height of 676 m above sea level since 2006 and it has been able to be suitably combined with a lookout tower thanks to the inventive design of the architect Ivan Vorel. The lookout tower was opened to the public one year later. The lookout tower is 35 m high, while its gallery is at a height of 24 m, i.e. at an exact altitude of 700 metres above sea level. Further details (including opening hours) can be found at www.rozhledna-nisanka.cz. The green markings now descend to the road which will bring you to a place known as U Třech lip (a wayside cross). Once there, head shortly to the right along the road to the spring of the Nisa. The spring area was developed in 1930, but was later neglected. The municipality of Nová Ves nad Nisou and the Nová Ves Beautification Association has recently become involved in its dignified renewal. In 2010, the last significant repairs took place and the stolen memorial plaque was replaced. It is possible to follow the local markings of the Smržovka Tour Circuit from the spring. This will first bring you to the Parkhotel, from where it continues through the municipal forest park and around the Hartwig spring which is named after the local doctor Hartwig Weisskopf. You will gradually climb to Lidické náměstí, where a statue of Venus has stood on the fountain since 2001. It is just a few minutes to Smržovka’s T. G. Masaryk Square, above which you will find the railway station. If you still have time, we recommend a visit to the Museum of local History in the Château – building no. 1. Otokar Simm
You can see the remains of Tobias the Vampire at a new museum in Hrádek nad Nisou The remains of a mysteriously buried man were found in Hrádek nad Nisou in March 2010. He was lying outside the area of the cemetery, just 25 cm beneath the surface of the road and on his belly. Four silver Prague coins from the reign of John of Luxemburg were lying by his left hand. This unique discovery was hidden from the sight of the public for almost two years. Many expert exam‑ inations were realised during this period, so we can now boldly state that these are the most researched remains in the Czech Republic. At the same time, an exhibition has also been prepared so that Tobias the Vampire, as the man has been named, has been given a dignified resting place. The exhibition called “Tobias the Vampire – a Journey through Space and Time” was opened in the “Brána Trojzemí” Multifunctional Centre in January 2012 and it will remain open for at least one year.
As well as Tobias’ remains which are exhibited in a special display case in the building’s cellar, the part of the exhibition on the first floor also provides in‑ formation on the type of house which Tobias could have lived in during the 14th century, how he could have heated it, what items he may have used and which roads he may have travelled. It uses the find‑ ings from Hrádek nad Nisou, as well as a number of exhibits on loan from museums in Zittau, Liberec and Pilsen. Some of them are unique: for example, the collection of wooden items of daily use or the treasure of thirty-eight Prague coins dating from the beginning of the 14th century found at Oybin. As well as the actual skeletal remains, other special features include the panels with answers to questions associated with the vampire: what is a vampire, why is he called Tobias … simply everything which we know about him thanks to
the research undertaken by scientists. We know, for example, at what age and in which season he died, what he had eaten and that he had not spent most of life in Hrádek. A reconstruction of his appearance has also been completed. The “Tobias the Vampire – a Journey through Space and Time” exhibition is open seven days a week, i.e. also at weekends and also on Mondays, unlike many museums. The Arterial Trail by bike and on foot A short lesson on the basics of trailblazing Visitors often do not even notice the markings on walking tracks which assist them in their orientation and they consider them to be a matter of course. However, their existence and placement in the field is subject to precise rules. Some basic information is sure to help visitors see these markings in a new light. LINE MARKINGS A walking track line marking is square and it consists of three horizontal lines. The central guide line is realised using one of the vivid colours (red, blue, green or yellow) and both the outer lines are white. Skiing line markings have the same shape and size as walking track markings, i.e. a 100 mm square. However, their outer lines are orange and white is used as one of the four colours for the guide lines. The line markings for terrain cycle trails are similar
to skiing markings, but they differ in their size and the colour of the outer lines: they are yellow and the markings on terrain cycle trails have dimensions of 140 x 140 mm. ARROWS AND THEIR PLACEMENT If a marked trail suddenly changes direction or turns off onto another track and it is not possible to reliably mark this situation using line markings, an arrow is used which both distinctively draws attention to the change of direction and leads the hiker in the new direction. An arrow is also used to point straight ahead, if there are no suitable structures for the placement of a marking after an intersection. Zdeněk Rajsigl, the Chairman of the Committee for Trailblazing in the Liberec Region
The history of trailblazing Mankind has blazed trails from its very beginnings. Even prehistoric hunters marked their tracks. However, I do not intend to write about that period. The history of trailblazing on hiking tracks alone is a sufficiently detailed area. So, here is a brief history … For example, the Radhošť submontane group built a network of hiking trails around Radhošť marked with the club’s symbols shortly after its establishment in 1884. The Czech Hikers’ Club was established in 1888 and tracks along the Vltava valley (from Karlštejn to Beroun and from Holoubkov to Rač) were blazed in the following year. At that time, a group of trailblazers was known as a “Marking Team” and each team consisted of 3-6 members. They had bearers to carry their paint, tools and refreshments. (Nowadays, pairs of trailblazers carry everything themselves.) After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the individual trails began to be joined up and the network of trails was 25,000 km long as early as in 1920. By around 1938, the network of marked trails had grown to 40,000 km. There was nothing like it in any other country. All of the trailblazing activities were subject to individual rules and line markings were used throughout the entire country. An exception to this involved the areas of Western and Northern Bohemia and Northern Moravia where they started with shaped markings. It was not until 1932, that a contract on a change in the method of trailblazing in these areas was able to be concluded with the German clubs in the territory of the former Sudetenland. After 1945, the markings were in very poor condition. The trailblazers took on an onerous task which was especially demanding in the border area – the shaped markings were replaced with line markings. In the period from 1947 to 1951, they succeeded in newly blazing about 9,000 km of trails and putting up 3,000
10
direction signs. A remarkable achievement! After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, three long distance trails were also blazed. In the Czech lands, these were the “Guard Trail” (Strážní stezka) which led from Znojmo through the Bohemian Forest, the Ore Mountains and the Jeseníky Mountains and the “Freedom Trail” (Stezka svobody) which led from Dyleň via Prague, along the Sázava, through the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and the Moravian Beskids and into Slovakia. There it joined the “Trail of the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising” (Cesta hrdinů Slovenského národního povstání) which joined Děvín Castle at the confluence of the Morava and the Danube with the Dukla Pass. After the renewal of the Czech Hikers’ Club as an independent citizens’ association in 1990, trailblazing on hiking tracks became one of its most significant activities. At present, there are ca 40,000 km of blazed trails in the Czech Republic. The network is dense and it is not necessary to further expand it, but for all that the additional blazing of trails leading to border crossing points and the opening up of military training areas is ongoing. 1,260 voluntary trailblazers take care of this network. Before entering the field, they undergo training and they subsequently receive continuous additional training at regular seminars. The trailblazers not only renew and newly mark trails, but they also build signposts and map stands, install direction signs and provide the basic information for printing hiking maps. All of the markings are subject to the extensive binding Trailblazing Methodology which has led to the uniform blazing of trails throughout the entire Czech Republic. Jindřiška Brabcová, the Secretary of the Regional Trailblazing Committee for the Liberec Region

Let’s remove excess signs from the Jizera Mountains In spring of this year, the representatives of the Jizera Mountain Nature Reserve Administration, the Czech Forests state enterprise (Lesy ČR) and the Jizerská non-profit organisation met and discussed the information signs located throughout the Jizera Mountains. The representatives of all the aforementioned organisations feel the need to resolve the problem of information signs in the central area of the Jizera Mountains, especially from the point of view of their placement, expediency, currentness, state of repair and ownership. The purpose of this meeting was to achieve the stabilisation and eventual reduction of the number of signs and the improvement of the appearance of the entrance points to the mountains, including a search for individual
solutions at so-called central points where there is a greater concentration of signs and other small structures (benches, rest areas, kiosks and so on). Those at the meeting agreed to use their joint forces to put together the most comprehensive database of information signs, including information about their owners, and to keep it up to date. The associated activities should mainly lead to the removal of unwanted signs and the adherence to at least basic rules when placing signs in the Jizera Mountains. We believe that these efforts will make the Jizera Mountains even more attractive to visitors. Mgr. Jana Lhotová, The Manager of the Jizerská non-profit organisation

PEAT BOGS Jizera Mountain peat bogs The peat bogs are among the most beautiful and at the same time the most secret places in the Jizera Mountains. Meadows with undulating soil, small and large lakes which give the impression of being bottomless and growths of dark dwarf mountain pine, white cottongrass heads, sedges and insecteating sundew plants… Short marked detours from the main hiking tracks lead to some of them: for example, to the Velká Klečová meadow near the well-known Na Knajpě refreshment kiosk or to the Jizerka peat bog which is the destination of the “Tři iseriny” teaching trail. Perhaps the most interesting is
the Na Čihadle peat bog. During 2012, the members of the Jizera-Ještěd Mountain Association will build a new wooden look-out tower which will provide views of the entire dry moor. Less well-known are the black bogs in the environs of a number of municipalities: in Horní Lučany, Horní Maxov, Rádlo, Bedřichov, Fojtka and many other places. They differ from the peat bogs due to their greater amounts of mineral nutrients. They therefore have characteristic flora which appeals to visitors due to its diversity.

Bílý Potok, the railway station – the U Liščí chaty intersection (2 km) – the Black Stream Waterfall (3.5 km) – Hajní kostel – the Pod Frýdlantským cimbuřím intersection (5.5 km) – the Štolpich Road, the Nad Černým potokem intersection (7 km) – the Na Čihadle Nature Reserve (8.5 km) – the Na Knajpě kiosk (9.5 km) – the Velká Klečová meadow – the turnoff to Polední kameny (10.5 km) – the slopes of Mount Smědava – Polední kameny – Frýdlantské cimbuří (14.5 km) – the Pod Frýdlantským cimbuřím intersection (15.5 km) – Bílý Potok, the railway station (a total of 20.5 km). Set off from the railway station in Bílý Potok following the red markings on the road until you reach the intersection after several minutes. From there, follow the green markings and cross the bridge over the Smědá and then turn right directly after it. The markings will soon turn away from the river to the left and then gradually ascend around the last buildings and the hut camp with meadows up to the forest and to the mouth of the ravine of the Black Stream. After the picturesque lookouts on the Polední kameny ridge (on the left) and the massive Nos cliff (on the right), you will ascend to the turnoff leading to the Black Stream Waterfall. It is necessary to return from the waterfall. A further short detour to the Hajní kostel cliff-top lookout point (on the left) awaits you after less than a kilometre. Afterwards, there is a steep and broken section known as the Goat Trail (Kozí stezka), which comes out on the Štolpich Road.
Josef Matouschek 145 years ago, on 4 October 1867, Josef Matouschek, the creator of the best known maps of the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains, was born into the family of the head accountant of the Liebieg textile factory in Svárov in Velké Hamry. When Matouschek’s father died, Josef Heinrich Liebieg took care of the young boy and had him study at the business academy in Liberec. After graduating, Matouschek worked for him as his th
Turn left onto this road (the yellow markings) and you will come to the fenced Na Čihadle Nature Reserve after less than half an hour. Even though the surrounding forests have been felled in recent years as a consequence of an ecological catastrophe, thus seriously endangering the function of the entire dry moor, this is one of the most significant peat bogs in the Jizera Mountains. The new lookout tower, which will be constructed in close proximity to the frequented forest road during 2012, will enable good views of the nature reserve with its wetlands and several lakes. Your trip then will continue along the blue-marked Štolpich Road up to the Na Knajpě refreshment kiosk (a short detour to the internal section of a further dry moor, the Velká Klečová meadow, is located opposite this) and subsequently to the turnoff to Polední kameny. The yellow-marked trail heads to the left and gradually passes along the southern slopes of Mount Smědavá and leads up to a wide saddle. From there, it continues to the Polední kameny lookout point. The conspicuous Double Rocking Stone is located along the path on the right. The scenic ridge track strewn with a number of cliff formations will soon bring you to the turnoff to Frýdlantské cimbuří. You should be sure to take the short detour to the attractive lookout peak. The opposite cliff, separated from the lookout point by a chasm, is only accessible to climbers. Then descend to the Goat Trail (Kozí stezka) and follow it down to the right. Afterwards, return to Bílý Potok along the known trail.
The Jizera peat bogs will be among the most significant wetlands in the world The beauty and the efficiency of the Jizera Mountains landscape is well-known and also includes the exceptional mood and atmosphere of the local peat bogs. They will soon be incorporated in the so-called RAMSAR Convention. This involves an agreement which was concluded on 2nd of February 1971 in Ramsar in Iran. It serves to protect wetlands which are of international significance and deserve our exceptional attention. A territory with an area of 1807 ha in the eastern section of the Jizera Mountains Nature Reserve, along the state border with Poland, has been proposed for inclusion in this project. It includes four specially protected areas: the Jizera Peat Bogs National Nature Reserve, the Jizerka Peat Bogs Nature Reserve, the Černá Jezírka Nature Reserve and the Rybí loučky Nature Reserve. What is so exceptional about this territory to warrant international protection? In particular, this involves the uniquely preserved phenomenon of an unregulated
meandering mountain stream: this has given rise to a number of meanders, dead-end river arms and pools which play host to rare flora and fauna. This natural stream in combination with the adjacent peat bogs is able to slow down the water drainage at the amount of thousands of m3 and it can also serve as a model territory from the point of view of anti-flooding protection and care for the natural forest ecosystems. As well as its landscape and water management significance, this territory is also home to a number of rare species, both flora (for example, the largest population of low common juniper in the Czech Republic) and fauna: from spiders, dragonflies, beetles and butterflies through to valuable bird species such as the common grouse, the common snipe or the common crane. Written by Kateřina Millerová with the use of materials from the Administration of the Jizera Mountains Nature Reserve
and his map of the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains dating from 1927 personal secretary. He lived in Liberec where he also died shortly after the end of the Second World War (on 12th July 1945). He is buried in Oldřichov v Hájích. Everybody who is interested in the history of our region knows Josef Matouschek as a leading personality associated with hiking and mountaineering. From the time he was twenty, he was involved in almost everything concerning the discovery and opening up of the nature in Liberec and its environs. In 1884, he joined the German Mountain Association for the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains (Deutscher Gebirgsverein für Jeschken- und Isergebirge) and in just a few short years he was working in the association’s management. In later years, Josef Matouschek became the chief editor for this mountain association’s magazine. He also wrote for other magazines and was involved in everything promoting the beauty of the Jizera and Lusatian Mountains, the Český Dub area, the environs of Jablonec nad Nisou and Liberec, the foothills of the Giant Mountains and the entire adjacent region. Together with his former professor Franz Hübler, he was involved in the first systematic marking of hiking trails not only in the Jizera Mountains. Some of them are still used today. He also worked in the preparatory committee for the construction of the mountain hotel on the peak of Ještěd which was completed in 1907 (and destroyed by fire in 1963). This structure was considered to be the association’s greatest work. Josef Matouschek was also an excellent organiser, he was thorough and having
set himself a goal he did everything to achieve it. For example, he was involved in the establishment of the Liberec section of the “German-Austrian Alpine Association” in 1893 which raised the significance of local hiking and sport to an international level. At that time, a mountain chalet in the Alps was a matter of prestige and thanks to Matouschek this Liberec Alpine Association had two such chalets. Many current and former friends of alpine hiking found shelter under their roofs. Josef Matouschek visited the Alps several times, he climbed Mont Blanc and he travelled to the Caucasus and North America. In 1928, he went on a journey with his wife Maria. They reached America after travelling through the Orient, India, China and Japan. However, Josef Matouschek was mainly famous for his maps. The most significant was the map of the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains (Spezial-Karte vom Jeschken- u. Isergebirge) which was published in 1927 at a scale of 1:50,000. It had a print run of ten thousand (an unusually large number for the time). The map displays the extensive territory from the Lusatian Mountains up to the west of the Giant Mountains. It includes thousands of details, carefully named hills, cliffs, ravines, tracks, rivers and streams, memorial trees, settlements and secluded dwellings, memorials and crosses. Matouschek collected the names from foresters, woodcutters and natives. The map was based on an Austrian military map at a scale of 1:25,000 and it was the first map of this region with contour lines. Its value also lies in the
fact that it displays the region in the period shortly before the occurrence of the fundamental changes which were brought by the Second World War, i.e. including several abandoned localities. It is interesting that a huge reservoir was drawn into the map ahead of time. It was supposed to flood the entire Large Jizera Meadow shortly after the map’s publication. In the end, the project, which was designed by Emil Gebauer, the architect of the Breached Dam, was not realised. Matouschek completed a second supplemented and corrected edition before the outbreak of the Second World War, because the first edition had sold out and there was continuing demand for the map. Even though he had completed the work, it was never published after the German annexation of the Sudetenland and the few preserved incomplete copies of “Matouschek’s Neue Spezial-Karte vom Jeschken- u. Isergebirge 1938” are among the region’s greatest rarities. The next edition of Matouschek’s map from 1927, also called “the Jizera Mountains Special”, was published 73 years later in the year 2000 as a result of the work of the new Jizera-Ještěd Mountains Association. The second edition saw the light of day in 2005. However, Matouschek was not merely the author of maps of the Jizera Mountains. When the National Library in Prague held an exhibition entitled “A bygone world – Mácha’s region in old maps”, half the exhibition was dedicated to work whose author was Josef Matouschek. Across Dračí vrch to the Fojtka Reservoir TIP FOR TRIP
Krásná Studánka, the railway station – Radčice – Kateřinky, the upper intersection (3.5 km) – the Pod Dračím vrchem intersection – Dračí vrch (4.5 km) – Fojtka, the yew trees (6 km) – the Fojtka Yew Trees teaching trail (7 km) – Fojtka, the lower intersection (8 km) – the Fojtka Reservoir – Mníšek, the bus stop (a total of 11 km). Look for the green trail markings at the railway station in Krásná Studánka: they will lead you along a local road via Radčice (formerly two independent municipalities which have been suburbs of Liberec since 1980) up to the slopes of Dračí vrch. The trail offers a number of views. After 3.5 km, you will come to an intersection with the blue marked track in the upper part of Kateřinky. Continue a further 0.5 km to the Pod Dračím vrchem intersection. The green markings turn left at the forest nursery and then continue to climb to Dračí vrch. A short detour will take you to a cliff-top lookout. This legend-shrouded crag was made accessible in 1902 by the members of the German Mountain Association in Liberec. They had a number of steps cut into the rock and built a handrail on the upper platform. The lookout was repaired several years ago by the Jizera-Ještěd Mountain Association;
a number of trees were felled last year so that the lookout now offers visitors perfect views. The second part of the trip will take you to the turnoff onto the Fojtka Yew Trees (Fojtecké tisy) teaching trail. Five informative signs on this short trail will help to acquaint you with the Pod Dračí skálou natural monument, a protected location with relatively abundant growths of the European yew. The age of the oldest yew trees is estimated at 400 years. Continue along the green marked track to the Fojtka settlement, where you should then turn left along the unmarked road. You will soon come to a small reservoir; the reservoir on the Fojtka Stream was built in 19041906 as flood protection. It still serves this function today and it is also popularly used for recreation. During an inspection of the 11 m high and 146 m long dam, you may discover a memorial plaque dedicated to Friedrich Schiller. The one hundredth anniversary of the death of this popular German poet occurred during the construction period in 1905 and this event was recalled in many places in the border area. Follow the yellow trail markings at the railway crossing which will take you to the Mníšek u Liberce railway station in just a few minutes. Otokar Simm
Experiments, labyrinths, water games, nature and energy, games and puzzles, illusions, learning through playing or the science show. All of this can be found in the first and largest iQpark science centre in Liberec. The iQpark opens the door to the world of science and technology. Its basic principal is interactivity – the inclusion of the greatest possible number of senses. Visitors of all age groups get to know and discover common phenomena which occur around us through playing and experimenting. The iQpark is divided into four floors with an area of ca 3000 square metres and it presents hundreds of exhibits, experiments and games. Touching the exhibits is allowed, because you understand what you can try. The most interesting exhibits certainly include the water games, the mirror maze, the rotating water tunnel, the “bubble‑arium” or the bed of nails. Our visitors can take a photograph with the tallest man on the planet, pretend to be a weather presenter or investigate their own bodies using a thermal camera. The weekend entertainment programs are a highly popular part of visits to the iQpark. Visitors can watch the magnificent Science Show every Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm. This includes experiments with a Van deGraaff generator, liquid nitrogen with a temperature of up to ‑196°C or the fire show full of colours and explosions. Everybody can touch up to 500 thousand volts and have their hair stand on end (not only) with horror or explode a rose to dust

The iQpark has prepared a total of 10 workshops – lecture programs for schools which truly represent the principle of “learning through playing”. There is great interest in the forty‑minute teaching blocks in our laboratories under the leadership of our experienced lecturers. Pupils become acquainted with, for example, the human senses, air, water, force and movement or the production of nano‑fibres. The iQpark also has a large display hall which presents, for example, photographs from behind the scenes of science, while small and large visitors alike can experience a true adventure in the castle and so on.

Jizera Mountain reservoirs From time immemorial, the inhabitants of the foothills of the Jizera Mountains were constantly plagued by flash floods. The losses in life and property continued to grow with the development of industry and the construction of production buildings and essential roads. In the second half of the 19th century, this led to the formation of various associations whose goal was the construction of hydraulic structures designed to prevent the damage. An entire system of reservoirs was proposed at the beginning of the 20th century. A total of six reservoirs were planned for construction, but in the end only five of them were realised: on the Black Nisa River, the Harcov and Mšeno Streams and two smaller reservoirs on the Fojtka and Albrechtice Streams. The plans to build the sixth (on the Jeřice River) were eventually abandoned. Several other reservoirs have also been created in the
Jizera Mountains in recent years: the Souš Reservoir on the Black Desná and the infamous Breached Dam on the White Desná. Smaller structures can also be found in Bedřichov, Rudolfov or in Harta near Frýdlant. The last, but by far the largest hydraulic structure in the Jizera Mountains is the Josefův Důl Reservoir on the Kamenice. Its main task is no longer the protection of the environs from flooding; it is mainly used as a source of drinking water. Nowadays, these bodies of water inseparably belong to the Jizera Mountains, because they have had a significant impact on their landscape. They are not only of protective or industrial significance, but are also of importance from the point of view of hiking and recreation. To this end, the “urban” Mšeno Reservoir in Jablonec nad Nisou is one of the area’s most valuable reservoirs. Otokar Simm

Bedřichov has new walking circuits Two walking circuits connecting significant hiking areas in Bedříchov and its environs have been established within the framework of a project of the municipality of Bedřichov realised by the Jizerská non-profit organisation. The shorter circuit, marked blue, is less demanding and is mainly designated for families and relaxing trips. The longer, red-marked circuit is approximately five kilometres long and it provides a physically more demanding, sporty track. However, it also offers beautiful views not only of
the Jizera Mountains, but also of the Giant Mountains during good visibility. The circuits have a total of 17 stations with information signs; moreover, the stations on the red circuit have also been supplemented with wooden sports equipment and hikers can therefore try out their physical condition and fitness there. The project has been realised with a financial contribution from the State Agricultural Intervention Fund.

The Frýdlant Town Museum’s “ Hospital” exhibition The heritage‑protected, former hospital building (the two‑storey baroque building no. 176) has been reconstructed thanks to funds from the ROP NUTS II Northeast Operating Program and its ground floor will house a museum exhibition. The study for the architectural solution has already been completed and the work is to be supplied by the company M Plus. The exhibition will mainly present the structural development of the town’s historical centre and square, as well as a number of crafts. The design has been conceived in such a way so that it connects the history of the square (as based on archaeological findings) with artefacts substantiating the variety of life in the town, the craft skills of the inhabitants and the history and mission of the hospital, including its sacral dimension.
The chosen means of presentation corresponds to the effort to create a modern and communicative exhibition addressing a wide spectrum of visitors. It offers visitors active involvement and passive observation, teaching and fun, information and points of interest. Part of the design proposal includes an idea for the use of audiovisual technology and stage lighting to bring the exhibition to life. It is expected that the texts will be available in two or three languages and that there will be voice commentaries and an entire information database with the basic signs in Braille, as well as the greatest possible wheelchair access in the area. The official opening is planned for 1st June 2012.

To the waterfalls on the Black Desná TIP FOR TRIP
Kořenov, the railway station – Horní Polubný (1.5 km) – Nýčovy Domky – Souš, the Bartel Cross (5 km) – the waterfalls on the Black Desná – Desná, Sklář – Desná, centre (10.5 km). The trip begins at the Kořenov. Before setting off, you can visit the interesting exhibition at the Rack-andPinion Railway Museum. Find the signpost in front of the railway station, from which you should follow the green markings to the Church of St. John the Baptist (kostel sv. Jana Křtitele) (dating from 1789-1793) in Horní Polubný. The further parts of the journey will also follow the green markings. The trail leads past mountain chalets and meadows with views; after a short section, you will find yourself in the Nýčovy Domky mountain settlement, nowadays part of Desná. You will then descend to the road in the Souš settlement. There, we recommend a short detour along the road (to the right) to the dam of the Souš Reservoir. The reservoir on the Black Desná was built in 1912-1915 and it has served as a drinking water reservoir since 1974; it is therefore not possible to swim there.
Return from the reservoir to the place where the so-called Bartel Cross stands at the side of the road. This is an old wayside cross consisting of a massive granite base and a cast iron cross with the body of Christ. Red markings will then accompany you on your journey from there to your destination. The track now descends according to the Black Desná River and it is part of the Black Desná Waterfalls teaching trail. The river flows through a wild valley and thus forms several waterfalls and rapids. Some of them have been given names in modern times: the Pot, Beech, Long and Cook Stove Waterfalls. The enormous cliff pot and basin which the water has ground into the granite base rock is worth noting. Before entering the forest, you will be able to see the so-called Fuchs Cross on one of the boulders in the river bed. It recalls a sad event from 1912 when the nineyear-old Otto Fuchs drowned there. The red markings continue around the Sklář cultural centre and along the main road to the centre of Desná. A railway station and bus stops can be found in the town. Otokar Simm
Jizera Mountain waterfalls Several streams rising on the Jizera Mountain plateau plunge into the valleys through ravines hemmed in between the slopes of the surrounding mountain ridges and crests. The ravines are sometimes so steep that the streams have to overcome various height differences where they create waterfalls and romantic nooks. They became popular destinations for hikes as early as in the 19th century during the period of a boom in hiking and they still remain so today. The former mountain
associations built trails to them with lookout points equipped with handrails. On the southern side of the Jizera Mountains, the best-known rapids and waterfalls are on the Black Desná and the Jedlová. On the northern side, the best-known waterfalls are on the Black Stream and the Large Štolpich and the rapids on the Small Štolpich. Marked hiking tracks now lead to all of the aforementioned places. A new look for the Catalogue of Costume Jewellery and Glass Companies Glassmaking and the production of costume jewellery are as closely connected with the Jizera Mountains as fishponds are with South Bohemia. The more than 300-year-old tradition still continues today, albeit that it is no longer at the level of its former glory. However, there is still demand for “Jizera silver” and visitors to our region still come to look for beads, seed beads, finished pieces of costume jewellery or just components for further production. As this is one of the common attractions for tourists visiting our area, the tourist information centres in Jablonec nad Nisou and Železný Brod have cooperated and published a new Catalogue of Costume
Jewellery and Glass Companies. As well as the printed version which is available at the local information centres and has been distributed to all corners of the earth at tourist trade fairs via the CzechTourism Agency, extended company presentations are also available with a search function in the Costume Jewellery and Glass section of the website at www.jablonec.com. The catalogue is in Czech, German and English and, as well as the directory, it also contains a presentation of the towns of Jablonec nad Nisou and Železný Brod, their cultural facilities and the significant local events associated with costume jewellery and glass.

Products with the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains logo have appeared at trade fairs and tourism exhibitions since autumn 2010 and they are used to promote the Liberec Region. It is, however, mainly possible to come across them at markets and fairs, no matter whether this involves markets associated with Christmas or Easter or traditional fairs such as the Saint Anne’s Fair at Jizerka or the Marian Fair at Kristiánov. The brand is beginning to slowly become established at a series of farmers’ markets in the Liberec Region and it has even penetrated as far as Prague. A new feature in 2012 is the fact that the brand now also appears in brownstone stores. Two holders of the brand certification in Smržovka decided to join forces with others and to widen their offers. At Vladimír Hejral’s bakery, you will not only find breadstuffs, but also cheeses which taste wonderful with Smržovka bread. Helena Sibřinová’s shop on T. G. Masaryk Square not
only stocks textile products with the Helababy brand, but also ceramics or basket-making products from the therapeutic workshops in Horní Maxov. What does the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains brand mean? It is proof of the fact that the product comes from the area of the Jizera Mountains (often they are made from local raw materials) and that it has been made with a large amount of manual work and without any destructive influence on the local environment: in short, the product bears the imprint of this beautiful part of the world. In 2012, this brand is currently born by 49 products or groups of products. These include a wide range of foodstuffs and drinks and products made from natural materials (wood, paper, beeswax, textile, metal, ceramics and glass). You can acquaint yourself with all the goods at www. jizerske-vyrobky.cz where there is a catalogue of all the producers, as well as up-to-date reports on where you can find the products. We are announcing a new competition for the 2012 summer season: If you come across a stand with the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains logo at a market or fair during your holiday wanders, take a photo next to it and send the photograph to masif@ seznam.cz with a note as to where and when it was. Do not forget to write your postal address. We will publish the photographs and reward their authors!

Thanks to assistance from the Small Projects Fund OPPS 2007-2013 Target 3, the Jizera Mountain Tourist Region is currently preparing a new competition entitled “The Secret Places of the Jizera Mountains” which is not only for children and their parents… Seven interesting, mysterious and in particular less well-known places in the Jizera Mountains will be labelled with a small, freely accessible metal plaque which will include a code. After discovering all of the plaques and breaking the secret code, the successful participants will be given a gift – a glass coin from Izerína the Fairy. A flier with a story by the regional writer Klára Hoffmanová supplemented with pictures by the artist Líba Novotná will be published to accompany this competition. Part of this project will include the creation of a new www.vilaizerina.cz website focussing on children or providing a children’s alternative to www.jizerky.cz. The website will contain information about the “Secret

Places of the Jizera Mountains” game, other games for children, information for families with children, a gallery of children’s paintings, a calendar of children’s events and much more; this will be in Czech and Polish in the initial phase. The aim of this project is to create two completely new tourism products: a website for families with children and a competition which will take visitors to interesting and less well-known places in the Jizera Mountains. The project will address the biggest group of visitors to the Jizera Mountains and will offer them new options for spending their leisure time. It will involve the continuation and elaboration of the motif of Izerína the Fairy, the protector and patron of the Jizera Mountains, and the further use of this mysterious character as a marketing tool to promote the area. The project will enable a creative coming together of parents and children and will sensitively and educationally provide them with less well-known facts about the Jizera Mountains.
