CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.
THE BUYER
Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.
BEFORE THE AUCTION
Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Registration If you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.
THE AUCTION
Bidding All artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with HERITAGE in advance. The lot being offered is usually illustrated on a screen. Bidding Increments Bidding generally opens below the low estimate and advances in the following increments: Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp.

Absentee/ Written Bids If you cannot attend the auction in person, you may bid in other ways. The most common is written bids. Written bids are written instruction given to HERITAGE to bid for you on one or more lots up to a maximum amount you specify for each lot. There is no charge for this service. If two or more parties leave identical bids, the first bid received by HERITAGE will take preference. Written bid forms are available 7 days before the sale and returned to HERITAGE within 24 hours before the sale or by fax to (021) 351 0707. Telephone Bids If you cannot attend the auction, HERITAGE will execute on behalf of your bid by telephone. Please make arrangements for this service at least 1 (one) day before the sale. It is advisable for you to leave your maximum bid, in case you are unable to reach us by phone. Successful Bids Successful bidder will be indicated by the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer after reaching or exceeding the reserve price. HERITAGE will record the bidder number of the buyer. Under the auctioneer’s discretion bidding may be reopened. Unsold lots When a lot fails to sell, the auctioneer will not announce a bidder’s number. Lots unsold will be returned to the consignor usually after a week in case there are any post sale offers.

Dullah Dullah’s painting stands out uniquely. His technique, brush stroke, observation, point of view, treatment of colour and mastery of his subjects make him stand out on his own. His mastery of the skills necessary to paint figure after realistic figure convinces of the reality of his scenes of individuals and groups of people in their setting. The skilled reproduction of skin tone and the mastery of the depiction of drapery, posture and gesture makes his paintings extremely convincing. Dullah’s choices of colour ranged between ochre to deep brown, with nuances of the play of yellow, green, turquoise, orange and maroon, become symbolic of his own character. Dullah speaks through his paintings of the microcosms, the smallest elements of existence and the natural environment. His subject paintings ranging from the fresh faces of kampong children, portraits of a village woman, and the faces of the elderly men and women alike, jungle scenes and other landscapes and a variety of flowers. Throughout this wide range of subjects Dullah has always been certain to focus on the drama of life; a habit which has grown out of his own experiences and observations of his environment. The present lot illustrates one of his serial paintings of flower object usually found in his surroundings.

M. Irfan M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra 1972. M. Irfan is included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra that recently held a group exhibition under the theme of Panorama. He is widely known as prospective painters in Indonesian art world. He was one of the member or Jendela Group, a group of painters from Minang, West Sumatra. Basically Irfan is an artist that does not like to involve himself in great or political issues. He feels that they are simply beyond his capacity and interests. For him perceiving petty objects around him is more interesting. The present lot perhaps Irfan’s personal observation towards his surroundings. Irfan’s paintings of train series have captivated the people’s interest. He mostly painted in huge size. They portray trains, railways, and fumes which give a sense of darkness. His “trains” series was quite a leap in Irfan’s painting career. They contained Irfan’s dreams, hopes and ideas.

Abdul Aziz Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time.

Basoeki Abdullah Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland's Queen Juliana ascension to throne on 6 September 1948. There are painters who like to paint nudity. Nudity in art has generally reflected — with some exceptions — social standards of aesthetics and modesty/ morality of their time in painting, sculpture and more recently in photography. At all times in human history, the human body has been one of the principal subjects for artists. It has been represented on prehistoric paintings and statutes and in all eras since. The male nude was more common in antiquity, especially in ancient Greece, but today the tendency is for the female nude body to be more highly regarded and represented.

Willem Gerard Hofker Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1902. He studied arts at the academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam and also learnt under painter W. Witsen and Isaac Israels. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. Willem Hofker was a renowned and much sought-after portraitist. Between 1927 and 1981 Hofker made notes on over 1600 paintings, watercolors, etchings, lithos and mezzotints. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. His drawing was very refined and smooth, also very poetic. Hofker left an even larger number of portraits of his relatives and friends in various techniques and of his mother, all bearing witness to his great love. In later years his wife Maria was a frequent and very patient subject of portraits in all kinds of techniques. 062 WILLEM GERARD HOFKER (Amsterdam, 1902 – 1981) Mevrow H.W. Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity. Lee was passionate and energetic in describing his world – street vendors of Jakarta, Malaysian fishing villages, Balinese processions, and a wide range of animals he personally observed. This characteristic perhaps sums up the unique feature of Lee Man Fong’s art. Here, Lee tried to explore his great intense in capturing the daily life of Balinese people (woman) through observation of life and nature surrounds him. His composition in Chinese painting is dominantly with a balance between substance and void, light and darkness, bright color and subdued tones. 074 LEE MAN FONG (Canton, China 1913 – Singapore 1988) Lady Vendor Oil on board: 64 x 49 cm Signed and stamped in chinese character, upper right Provenance : Private collection, Jakarta RP 600.000.000 - 900.000.000 USD 50,000 - 75,000

Arie Smit Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali. Hindu temples and shrines are integral to Bali life and as such are a common theme in Smit’s work. It is typical of his work as it depicts community life in rural Bali, his most favoured subject matter. Arie Smit (born Adrianus Wilhelmus Smit in 1916) a Dutch-born Indonesian painter has been captured with Bali ever since his arrival in 1956. Smit was inspired by the watercolours of Western artist Signac. In his experimentation with colour and fascination with light, Smit identified with the Impressionist painters of the late 19th Century, particularly Cezanne. He celebrates the tropical beauty and wonder with presenting the essence of light filtering through the tropical plants, leaves and trees. The use of colour is sophisticated. Red is mixed with purples, oranges, blues and yellow to suggest a temple basking in the sun’s glow. The vibrant colour combination exudes vitality and exuberance yet the mood imbued is peaceful and harmonious.

Lee Man Fong During 1952, Lee was quietly developing his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. Lee Man Fong’s painting style is as variegated as the diverse manners of birds, animals and fishes born of his brush. The present lot feature one of wonderful painting of doves that symbolized the peace and harmony as to in Chinese philosophy. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs, which had made a far reaching name for him since some forty years ago and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. This is because as a youth he loved to observe the different life habits of various animals and thoroughly capturing their essential traits, was able to render them onto canvas vividly.

From Switzerland to the South Pacific, from Bali to Thailand, Theo Meier's life was as varied and exotic as his artistic output, his character as colorful as the oils with which he painted. Thailand has brought serenity to Theo Meier that made an important contribution to the artist’s well-deserved fame. His love on the island made Theo painted numerous objects of figures, landscape as well as village scene. Theo Meier's paintings have achieved worldwide recognition for their technical excellence, and artistic integrity. Laiad, was in fact, the real woman the artist needed in order to be able to create with a peaceful mind. Day after day, she brought to his heart a new serenity, and, on 9 May, she became his wife in a traditional Thai Wedding, well-organized by Prince Sanidh in Hua Hin, with the consul of Switzerland in Bangkok Ernest Junier (from Basel), as the witness. The newlyweds went to Phuket on their honeymoon, by train. Appreciating her dynamic character, enhanced by a strong Buddhist education, Theo decided to name Laiad Jettli. Laiad Phab Prakansiwong was Theo’s last wife. “Schatzli” is a nickname/moniker in Swiss-German on someone you hold very dear. Theo as we know was from Switzerland. Swiss-German language has many cute words like that; they add the “li” in the end of the word to make it cozy-cute. Like “Herzgeferli”, Schnackermusli etc. All those words are used to express that they are dear to you. “Schatzli” Theo always called her that. But the spelling has gotten out of hand though. It’s always like that in different languages, that people spell it their way on how it sounds. But it is actually “Schatzli”,not “Jettli” or “Yattlie” that some are spelling it.

Widayat Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, myth, and ritual. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The present lot is an early work of Widayat with very rare objects. It features the village of Kintamani sits on the rim of the great volcanic caldera of mount Gunung Batur. The climate is cold, with thick clouds rolling in almost daily in the late afternoon. The colors in this painting reflect the misty atmosphere in addition to the bleakness of the landscape with blackened lava flows from eruptions of the active volcano.

Hendra Gunawan Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. Hendra took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983. Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artist’s career. Hendra figures are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated, expressionistic and abstract.
