Subject type60: 30 lecture / 15 practice Evaluation type: exam Semester: 5 th Preconditions: Pedology Short description of the subject: Knowledge: Soil is one of the world’s most important natural resources. Together with air and water it is the basis for life on planet earth. It has many important functions which are essential for life. Not only does it play the major part in allowing us to feed the world's population, but it also plays a major role in the recycling of air, water, nutrients, and maintaining a number of natural cycles, there by ensuring that there will be a basis for life in generations to come. Without soil, the world's population neither would not could survive. As a result of the economic and industrial development soil fertility more and more often suffer a loss endangering food supply and the maintenance of healthy environment. Major factors of decreasing soil fertility are erosion processes caused by wind or water and pollution. As for pollution the biggest problem is that it often remains hidden and reduces fertility on the long run. In the educational programme we study the most important soil degradation processes, the major causes of pollution their effect on soil fertility and the potential solution possibilities. During the programme we study the conventional amelioration procedures with special regard to acidification and alkalinisation, secondary salinization and to other soil amelioration problems. We study the factors deteriorating soil quality and the potential solution possibilities. Competencies: Interpretation of soil fertility, factors of fertility. Acquisition of the most important soil degradation processes. Relationship between the use of soils soil degradation. Chemical soil defects. IV. THE INFRASTRUCTURAL CONDITIONS OF LAUNCHING THE MAJOR
The description of the material conditions of the training and the available infrastructure (based on the ’KKK’ if it is regulated by it, and supported by numerical data): Classrooms, lecture rooms, laboratories and their instrumental equipment, workshops, practice areas: Lecture rooms, practice rooms, audiovisual instruments At our Faculty, the basic infrastructural conditions of the planned major are provided for teachers, researchers and students alike. Three lecture halls are suitable for seating over 100 people, eight lecture rooms can seat 51-100 people. Two cabinet rooms (for 31-50 people), twelve seminar rooms or practice rooms, three computer rooms (for 50, 20, 20 people), three language classrooms, 16 laboratory rooms at departments, faculty and department libraries are also available. The lecture and practice rooms are all equipped with both traditional and modern audio-visual instruments necessary for education and demonstration, including several digital projectors and portable computers operating them.
Information technology, education technology: IT network The main part of our IT network is connected to an optical backbone and has star topology. It contains twisted-pair ethernet connectors (10BASE-T és 100BASE-T). Network availability is excellent. At present, WAN-connectivity is ATM-based with a speed of 1Gbit/s. The training and research tasks of the Faculty are supported by more than 300 networked computers. Besides the teaching periods, students can use IT services at several places in an organized form according to their needs. Software can be used without limitation on most computers of the Faculty within the framework of Microsoft Campus licence. Program ’Statistica’ can also be used without limitation by everybody. Desktop publishing software ’Publisher’ is available on several computers. Multiple versions of ’Visual Studio’ are available in order to help programming. ’FrontPage’ and the free software ’1stPage2000’ can be used for webpage editing. Our most important web-based service, the portal has an SQL-PHP system which is being improved continuously. Library availability; the library and Internet availability of significant paper-based and electronic journals, as well as technical books important from the point of view of the major, the URL of the webpage containing these data of the library Faculty Library The address of the Faculty Library:
[email protected] The holdings of the library consist of 106.807 volumes. Out of these, 87.979 books, 15.182 pieces of bound journals, 553 pieces of audio documents 3.113 other publications are at students’ service. According to the activity area of the Faculty, the main collection interest of the library is professional literature including all branches of agriculture, environment management and food industry. The fundamental economic and informatics specialist books as well as the publications containing the regulations referring to agriculture, necessary for education on the planned major, are also available. The foreign language journals of the individual professional fields are represented by 2-3 journals per department (57 foreign and more than 200 Hungarian language

journals). It is an important achievement that we have increased the number of subscribed foreign journals from 42 by 15 since 2002. Besides traditional library services (lending, reading on the spot, inter-library lending, providing information, photocopying), it is also important to improve new types of electrical library services continuously. It is facilitated by the complete connection of departments, students’ dormitories and other organizational units to the Internet, which has been carried out recently and ensures networking services. At the same time, the basic modules of ’Corvina’ integrated library system have been introduced, which has created the necessary basis for the computer processing of the library’s book stock. The access and use of networking services through the Internet (electronic correspondence, databases, library catalogues) are of great importance in satisfying the professional literature needs of our instructors, researchers and students. At present the computer services of the Faculty Library are the following: From the databases created by the Faculty Library: the databases of theses, specialised engineers’ theses and doctoral dissertations the databases of books: retrospective processing in ’Corvina’ system from 1st January 2001 From network-accessed databases: as a consortium member: CAB, FSTA databases, Biological Abstract EISZ: ’Web of Science’ database (a so-called ‘EISZ’ laboratory has been created in the reading room with 10 computers and 2 printers) Springer database From other databases: researching literature for preparing theses and dissertations through online query Most of the Hungarian and English language textbooks necessary for acquiring the teaching materials are available in the bookshop of the Faculty. Furthermore, the availability of teaching materials necessary for foreign language training is also ensured by providing Internet access.
The well-equipped laboratories of the institutes of the Faculty offer good possibilities for preparing theses. The Faculty has established a network of model farms, which is unique in the country, so students can prepare their theses and spend their internship on Hungarian or foreign model farms. The external departments and companies that have entered a cooperation contract (e.g. Győrszolg Joint Stock Company, AQUA Ltd, Rekultiv Ltd, the Water Conservancy Board of Northern Transdanubia /Észak-dunántúli Vízügyi Igazgatóság/, Solum Joint Stock Company, Büchl Hungaria Joint Stock Company) do not only provide practice areas and help in writing theses, but they also offer employment possibilities for students after their graduation. Other conditions of education regarded as necessary
