Music Historical Essay Writing Important information The task is the composition of an original text based on given criteria. The examinee has to choose one of the three topics given below. The maximum length of the essay is 4-5 pages. You will have to write with a pen. If you want to modify your answer, cross it out and write the correction next to it. No points will be deducted for incorrect spelling or grammar. Illegible or uninterpretable answers, however, will be considered wrong. Incorrect spelling of musical terms and names of composers will result in a loss of points. In the music historical essay the following rules apply concerning the writing of names of composers: in case of Hungarian composers the full name should appear at least once, with foreign composers the family name is sufficient. Full names will not yield extra points, incorrect spelling of the family name, however, will result in a loss of points. You are not allowed to use any aids or reference materials in your work.
Music Historical Essay Choose one of the three titles below. Elaborate the chosen topic based on the given guidelines. a) Ferenc Liszt, the Creator of the Genre of the Symphonic Poem Describe the period of Romanticism. Write about social changes and about the evolution of the role of art and that of the artist in the 19th century. Describe Liszt’s career, his manysided musical activities. Name a few works of different genres from his oeuvre. Write about programme music and the genre of the symphonic poem. Introduce one of Liszt’s symphonic poems in detail. b) The Influence of Historical Events on Art, the Influence of Art on Everyday Life Choose a music historical era and elaborate on the influence of historical and social events on music and musicians and also on the role of music in the life of the people in that era. Support your statements with references to titles of pieces of music. c) The Versatility of the Genre of the Song/Lied Explain the meaning of the following terms: song/Lied, folksong, art song, Lied-cycle, musical play/Singspiel. Explore their similarities and differences, write about their functions in particular periods of music history. Describe the characteristic features of the Romantic Lied and Lied-cycle, mention its most outstanding composers. 30
