Mark your answer with a ‘X’. (Score: 0.5 points for each correct item.) “Above all, we have resolved by oath that if a relative of a nobleman is found to have committed theft above the value of a hen, […] they will be hanged and all their possessions confiscated. If a freeman or a slave is found to have committed theft, they will be hanged. If they should try to avoid the gallows by taking sanctuary in the church, they will be brought out and blinded. If a freeman or a slave is found to have stolen a goose or a hen, they will lose one eye and give back what they have stolen. […] If a freeman steals something of the value of ten dénár, they will be hanged, and if they steal something of a value less than ten dénár, they will return it twelvefold and pay for an ox. […] If, after this, somebody is named as a thief by the entire village, they will be tried by ordeal. […] If the mayor refuses to cut off the nose of a slave or hang a freeman, they will lose everything apart from their sons and daughters and they will be sold. If they should hang an innocent person, they will pay one hundred and ten coins and return all the hanged person’s possessions. […] Those who make sacrifices by wells or take offerings to sources or stones according to the pagan custom will pay for their sin with an ox.” […] írásbeli vizsga, I. összetevő 0612

Important information Give clear answers and make all your work unambiguous – even if you need to make corrections in your text. Try to be concise and keep to the point. Do not use more space than is provided. Please write in blue ink. When working on the exam tasks consider the following. •
Read the instructions carefully.
•
Do exactly what the instructions tell you.
•
Study the sources provided (pictures, diagrams, texts, maps). Please keep in mind that the English texts will be only rough translations which render the meaning of the original texts, but not their sometimes archaic style.
•
Use the resources that you are allowed to use for each task: the maps of the Historical Atlas [Történelmi atlasz] and the bilingual dictionaries.
•
Consider your answers carefully before writing them down so that you do not have to correct them later.
We advise you to follow these steps when dealing with the shorter or longer essay-type questions: 1. Identify the place and time of the given event or problem. 2. Use the given sources and the Historical Atlas to understand the task. 3. Collect the general concepts (for example: development, change, production) and the time-specific concepts (for example: serf, guild, personality cult) that can be used to describe the given event or problem. 4. Include the information contained in the sources, or the conclusions that can be drawn from them, in your answers. 5. Make drafts or outlines before writing your answers if necessary. 6. Identify the events leading up to the given situation, its causes and its results. 7. Describe assumptions about, and explanations of, events. 8. Include your own knowledge of the era (names and dates) as well as your own opinions and personal perspective of it. 9. Make sure that your sentences are clearly structured, and that your ideas are easy to follow. 10. Your whole answer should have a clear structure. Check your grammar and spelling. For your information: The following will be considered when your essays are evaluated: •
understanding of the task
•
proper and relevant content
•
logical overall structure and accurate language.

“Illustrious emperor, there are two institutions which primarily govern this world: one of them is the sanctified authority of the high priests, and the other is royal power. The burden which the priests have to shoulder is heavier in that they also have to render account before God of the kings who rule over the people.” (Letter from Pope Gelasius I, 5th-6th centuries AD) „Dicsőséges császár, két olyan intézmény van, amely elsősorban kormányozza ezt a világot: az egyik a legfőbb papok megszentelt tekintélye, a másik pedig a királyi írásbeli vizsga, II. összetevő 0612

Orthodox Church: orthodox, or sometimes inappropriately called Greek [görögkeleti] church. It is a church organisation which became independent after the schism of 1054. It is different from the Roman Catholic Church in its hierarchy, as well as its liturgy and some of its dogmas. They do not recognise the primacy of the pope, they do not believe in the power of purgatory, and they believe that the Holy Spirit is solely descended from the Father, and not from the Son. Excepting the high clergy, there is no compulsory celibacy, but remarriage is forbidden. The language of the liturgy is Greek, Old Slavic, or certain national languages. (Historical lexicon) ortodox egyház: igazhitű, vagy helytelenebb szóhasználattal görögkeleti egyház. Lényegében az 1054-es szkizma által önállósult egyházszervezet. A római katolikus egyháztól mind hierarchiájában, mind liturgiájában, mind egyes dogmáiban különbözik. “The war debts of the various countries and the credits between 1918 and 1920 totalled 28 billion dollars. […] The economic prospects of Eastern and Central Europe worsened the situation even further, because the customs and the duties, which were created without much thought, hindered general development in these countries […] the new borders separated the factories from the raw materials, the foundries from the coal mines, industry from the market. […] Without doubt, the modern war boosted the productivity of the economy. In the economic and technological fields these years brought huge advances. Car and aircraft production prospered, as well as oil refining, the chemical industry, electricity, paint and high-alloy steel production, the production of refrigerators and canned food, and a series of other industries.” (The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, by Paul Kennedy) „Az egyes országok közötti háborús tartozások és az 1918–20 közötti hitelsegélyek összege 28 milliárd dollárt tett ki. […] Kelet- és Közép-Európa gazdasági kilátásai tovább rontották a helyzetet, mert a sebtében létrehozott új országokban a vámok és illetékek gátolták az általános fejlődést, […] az új határok elválasztották a gyárakat a nyersanyagoktól, a kohókat a szénbányától, a gazdaságot a piactól. […] “In the 1920s the proportion of those employed in industry and commerce continued increasing, while the number of people working in agriculture decreased. Post-war production was characterised by an overproduction of raw materials and foodstuffs. írásbeli vizsga, II. összetevő 0612

Previous markets like India and Japan started production themselves, as a result of which the market of the former exporters further decreased. […] Motorisation, assembly-line production, and standardisation made cheap mass production possible, [so] Japan, China, and India all became rivals of the developed countries.” (From a textbook) „Az 1920-as években tovább nőtt az iparban és a kereskedelemben foglalkoztatottak aránya, illetve csökkent a mezőgazdaságból élők száma. […] A motorizáció, a futószalag-termelés, a szabványosítás lehetővé tették az olcsó tömegtermelést, [így] a fejlett országok vetélytársává vált Japán, India és Kína is.” (Tankönyvi szöveg) …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... …………………………………………………………………………………………………... We cannot fight arms by accumulating great stores of arms; this would be like asking Beelzebub for help to chase away the devils.” (Labour leader Clement Attlee speaking in the British House of Commons, 1935) „A háború veszélye ellen nem fegyverekkel védekezhet az ember, hanem egyedül úgy, hogy eltökélten halad egy új, törvénytisztelő világ megvalósítása felé. “Our emotions and the law both lead us to assist the Republican (Spanish) government. But if we sent them arms, it would result in a competition which would be won by the dictators. 17 This task is about the reign of Louis the Great.
(short) Using the source and your own knowledge, support the proposition that the laws of 1351 were drawn up in defence of the lesser nobility. In your answer explain the reasons for this, too.
““We have graciously listened to the request which the barons and other nobles of our country have made to us, […] consenting to and accepting our dearest ancestor and predecessor King Andreas’s charter, which we include here verbatim, and which was sealed with his golden seal and is free of all suspicion, together with all the liberties contained therein, except one paragraph, which has been excluded in the manner mentioned above and which says: “that those noblemen who die without an heir have the right to leave or sell their estates to the church or anybody else they wish to.” On the contrary, they shall not have the right to do so, but their estates shall lawfully and simply be bequeathed to their closest relatives and their family. […] 6. Moreover, from all our farming or vine-growing serfs from any free village, including the villages of the Lord High Steward and the Queen, except those living in walled towns, we shall collect a ninth [the ninth of the ten parts] of all produce and wine, and the Queen shall also collect it, and all the barons mentioned above shall collect a ninth of all produce and wine from all their farming or vine-growing serfs for their own use. “On September 2 the shelling started much more vigorously […] 12,000 mounted and foot soldiers, all of whom were already looking forward to the signal after a whole night of standing to, were ordered to attack. The signal was given by the Swabian battery with 6 cannons […] The Turks offered firm resistance, especially to the charge of the Brandenburgers, so it appeared as if the soldiers wanted to stop. As soon as […] they more or less got past the picket fence and the new breach was assaulted by the massed troops there was no way to resist, […] and those among the Turks who did not escape [from the town] to the castle were all cut down or taken prisoner.” (From the diary of Prince Henry of Saxony) „Szeptember 2-án az ágyúzás sokkal erőteljesebben kezdődött […] 12 000 főnyi lovas és gyalogos katonaságot vezényeltek a rohamra, kik már sóvárogva várták a jelt, minthogy az egész éjszakát készenlétben töltötték. 19 This task is about nationalistic movements in the Habsburg Empire.
(short) Using the sources and your own knowledge, write about the nationalistic movements of the first half of the 19th century in the Habsburg Empire.
“Nationalism, which considers the nation, the historically evolved community of people, to be the foundation of society, is the ideological concomitant of the evolution of the bourgeois state. By the 19th century, after the development of the common language and culture, the demand for economic unity also arose. It is supported by the system of ideas which awakens and strengthens national consciousness.” (From a textbook) „A polgári nemzetté válás ideológiai kísérője a nacionalizmus, amely a társadalom alapelemének az emberek történelmileg kialakult közösségét: a nemzetet tartja. A XIX. századra a közös terület, a közös nyelv és kultúra fejlődése után megszületett a gazdasági egység megteremtésének igénye is. “There may not be another country in the world which is home to more languages than Hungary, and consequently to so many nationalities.” In Vienna all the movements which might counter-balance the Hungarians found patronage, as they considered Hungarians to be revolutionaries. So, Ludevi Gaj […] received permission from Vienna to establish a Slavic printing house in Zagreb. The money came from Moscow, as it has always been the policy of the Russians to transform the Slavic movement into a Pan-Slavic, or in other words, Russian, movement. It must be acknowledged that Gaj set about his business expertly. He started by establishing the southern Slav literary language. […] He called this language Illyrian, and he strongly believed that it would spread among the Serbs, the Dalmatians, and the Slovenes as well as the Croatians. Young people in Croatia received Gaj’s ideas with enthusiasm and already envisaged a southern Slavic empire, in which they would play the role of the leaders. The Croatian Catholic clergy […] supported the Illyrian movement. Some of the less well-to-do aristocrats, who could not afford to spend some of their time in Vienna or Pest, but wanted to play their part in Zagreb, also assisted this nationalistic agitation, which was clearly against Hungary and offered a great opportunity for cheap glory.” (My Life and Times, by Ferenc Pulszky) „[…] A horvát ifjúság rajongással fogta föl Gáj eszméit, s maga előtt látta már a délszláv birodalmat, melyben övé lesz a vezérszerep. A horvát katolikus klérus […] pártolta az illír mozgalmat. Néhány szegényebb mágnás, kinek jövedelme nem engedte, hogy Bécsben vagy Pesten töltse idejének egy részét, de Zágrábban szerepet akart játszani, szintén fölkarolta e nemzetiségi izgatást, melynek éle nyíltan Magyarország ellen fordult, s emellett olcsó dicsőségre tág tért nyitott.” (Pulszky Ferenc: Életem és korom) “[…] it has never intended to deprive non-Hungarian speaking citizens of the country of their language. On the contrary, it has intended to recognise it, as it would be unlawful to interfere by force in the language people speak in private […] [But] the language of state administration, transport, the Hungarian government, and the courts must be Hungarian in all territories of the Hungarian crown.” (Lajos Kossuth in the 1840s)

This task is about the establishment of the bourgeois state during the period of the Dual Monarchy in Hungary. (long) Present the characteristics of the bourgeois state through the development of public administration and the school network.
“The Lord Lieutenant, who represented national interests and the government, was at the head of the county. He was appointed or relieved by the king at the proposal of the Minister of Interior. 21 This task is about Hungarian scholarship between the two World Wars. (short) Using the sources and your own knowledge, write about the background of Klebelsberg’s reforms and the outstanding successes of Hungarian scholarship. “Our Hungarian nation shall not be maintained and made great once again by the sword but by culture. It is the Ministry of Defence in the sense that now we must defend our country with the arms of the spirit and culture, and we must prove to the nations of the world again and again that Hungarians are vital and strong in the second millennium of their existence, and it is a historical injustice to do them harm.” (Kunó Klebelsberg, 1921) „A magyar hazát ma elsősorban nem a kard, hanem a kultúra tarthatja meg, és teheti ismét naggyá. […] (Klebelsberg Kunó, 1921) “There are a number of excellent professors who are a guarantee of the standard of our universities. Albert Szent-Györgyi had the greatest success, but several of his colleagues became known internationally in their own fields after the war. For example, Zoltán Bay, the inventor of radar, or biophysicist György Békésy, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1961. It is the aim of this movement to secure our independence, our sovereignty and to strengthen the democratic nature of our social, economic and political life, because only this can be the foundation of socialism in our country. […] […] To keep the order and to restore public security, new forces will be set up from police and army units and the armed squads of workers and youth. The Hungarian government has come to an agreement with the Soviet government that the Soviet troops will start their withdrawal from Budapest immediately, and will leave the territory of the capital as soon as our new forces are set up. […] After order has been restored, a new police force will be organised and the secret police will be dissolved. Nobody will be questioned because they have taken part in the armed conflicts. The government will propose to the parliament that the country’s coat-of-arms will be the Kossuth coat-of-arms and that March 15 will once again be a national holiday.” (From a speech by Imre Nagy on October 28, 1956) „Magyarország népe! […] “The countries which belong to the great community of Socialist countries […] can only base their relations on absolutely equal rights, respect for territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty, and non-intervention in each others’ internal affairs. […] The Soviet government […] has ordered the military command to withdraw the Soviet military forces from Budapest as soon as the Hungarian government wishes so.” (Statement by the government of the Soviet Union on October 30, 1956)

„A szocialista nemzetek nagy közösségéhez tartozó országok […] kölcsönös kapcsolataikat csakis a teljes egyenjogúságnak, a területi integritás tiszteletben tartásának, az állami függetlenségnek és szuverenitásnak, az egymás belügyeibe való be nem avatkozásnak elveire építhetik. […] A szovjet kormány […] utasítást adott a katonai parancsnokságnak, hogy vonja ki a szovjet katonai alakulatokat Budapestről, mihelyt ezt a magyar kormány jónak látja. (A Szovjetunió kormányának nyilatkozata, 1956. október 30.) “[…] The government of the People’s Republic of Hungary has received reliable information on the arrival of further Soviet troops in Hungary. The Prime Minister […] has demanded the immediate withdrawal of these Soviet units. He has informed the Soviet ambassador that the Hungarian government immediately withdraws from the Warsaw Pact and at the same time declares that it is soliciting help from the four great powers to protect Hungary’s neutrality. […]” (Memorandum to the UN by Imre Nagy) „[...] A Magyar Népköztársaság kormányához hiteles értesülések érkeztek újabb szovjet alakulatok Magyarországra való bevonulásáról. A Minisztertanács elnöke […] követelte ezeknek a szovjet alakulatoknak haladéktalan, azonnali visszavonását. Közölte a szovjet nagykövettel, hogy a magyar kormány a Varsói Szerződést azonnal felmondja, egyidejűleg kinyilatkoztatja, Magyarország semlegességének védelmére a négy nagyhatalom segítségét kéri. [...]” (Nagy Imre jegyzéke az ENSZ-hez) “Our situation will be decided by what the 200-million Russian empire intends to do with its military forces in Hungary. […] we should not forget the fact that our struggle was not a revolution but a struggle for freedom. After 1945 and a lost and for us aimless war this system was constructed with violence, and the heirs of this system now condemn it with their denial, contempt, disgust, and censure. The system was swept away by the entire Hungarian nation. The heirs should not wish for more evidence of this. It was a unique freedom fight in the world with our youth at the forefront. […] The reason for the freedom fight was that our people wished to decide how it wanted to live. It wished to decide freely about its fate, the administration of the state, the sale of the products of its work. […] We need new and fair elections with the participation of all the parties. The elections must be held in the presence of international observers.”
