Festival Read my World
Read My World is an annual literary festival in the Tolhuistuin in the North of Amsterdam. Each year, the focus lies on a different region of the world in which big societal changes occur. A Dutch editorial staff puts together a program based on a selection made by authors, brought up by local curators. In this way, Read My World aims to offer a new, engaged and current perspective on literary developments in countries adrift. Read My World is een jaarlijks terugkerend literatuurfestival in de Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord. Elk jaar staat een regio in de wereld centraal waar zich grote maatschappelijke veranderingen voltrekken. Een Nederlandse redactie stelt een programma samen op basis van een selectie van auteurs aangedragen door lokale curatoren. Read My World beoogt op deze manier een nieuw, betrokken en actueel perspectief te bieden op literaire ontwikkelingen in landen op drift.

Who needs another festival? Amsterdam already has it all: an international theater festival, an international documentary festival, a canal festival, a dance festival, and a dancing festival. But it was still lacking an INTERNATIONAL literary festival. Which is strange, considering that Amsterdam holds so many literary institutions and is frequented by a great deal of international authors. Read My World stems from the idea that the internet and, more specifically,
social media allow us to be more informed about the world than ever, to stay connected across all borders, but that in the end, nothing beats a live encounter. Especially when it comes to encounters with people from area’s that make the headlines. For the first edition of Read My World, we decided to focus on Palestine and Egypt, two countries in a region adrift after the Arab Spring. We asked two well-informed writers from Palestine
and Egypt to search for talents who in their eyes ‘write documentarily’. We did not specify what this ‘writing documentarily’ exactly should be, but only told them we were looking for very promising authors with a sharp and autonomous writing style. You were able to meet them all before: in the build-up to the festival, Asmaa Azaizeh and Abeer Soliman were present in the OBA, where they introduced ‘their’ writers. What lies in front of you now is the rich harvest of these gatherings and the commitment of a Dutch editorial staff. For three days in a row, you can sharpen your mind, be amazed, and feed upon music and good food at the most beautiful spot of Amsterdam, the Tolhuistuin. But most of all, in a few years’ time
you will be able to mention at parties that you were actually there, at that first edition of Read My World, and that you met the latest Nobel Prize winner live, sitting by a fire basket on a late summer evening in the north of Amsterdam.

Enkele jaren geleden ontstond in een huiskamer ergens in Ramallah het idee voor dit festival. Ik ontmoette er Asmaa Azaizeh, en we raakten urenlang in gesprek over literatuur en poëzie, over het verschil in betekenis ervan daar en hier. Eenmaal thuis bedacht ik me wat er zou gebeuren als deze gesprekken in een ‘werkverband’ samen met een redactieteam in Nederland zouden plaatsvinden en niet aan een goedgevulde tafel. Wie zou dan in de war raken van welke uitspraken? Hoe zou die ontmoeting kunnen leiden tot een oorspronkelijke programmering? En nu is het zover.
Ik ben vooral benieuwd naar de publieke ontmoeting tussen Asmaa en Abeer Soliman, onder leiding van Kirsten van den Hul. Beiden hebben immers los van elkaar op geheel eigen wijze invulling gegeven aan ons verzoek om op zoek te gaan naar mensen die documentair schrijven. Ik hoor graag van hen hoe ze te werk zijn gegaan en hoe ze terugkijken. Bovendien brengt dit programma ook nog eens drie powerladies tegelijkertijd op het podium, dus ik voorzie een meer dan inspirerend gesprek. Tevens kijk ik uit naar de openingsavond, de Read My World Revue, wat natuurlijk het moment is waarop alles
Het ontwikkelen van een splinternieuw literair festival is een van de leukere dingen in het leven: je mag het wiel namelijk opnieuw uitvinden. Het nieuwe aan ons wiel is het uitgangspunt ‘documentaire literatuur’. Over dat begrip hebben we lang gepraat, of beter gezegd: onze hersens uit onze kop gepeuterd, om de lading ervan scherp in het vizier te krijgen. Het gaat om méér dan het snijvlak van fictie en journalistiek, het gaat om meer dan een beschrijvende weergave van de werkelijkheid: documentaire literatuur is geen genre dat al bestaat, het is bij uitstek een genre dat ontstaat vanuit de zich om wat voor reden dan ook
opdringende werkelijkheid. Radicale maatschappelijke veranderingen, een radicale verandering van omgeving, van toeschouwer tot deelnemer aan het wereldtoneel worden gebombardeerd: schrijvers moeten vaak eerst hun eigen positie bepalen in een nieuwe omgeving voor ze zich om kunnen vormen tot een beschouwende (be)schrijver. Het slotprogramma, Gedocumenteerde werkelijkheid, wordt een zoektocht naar de verhouding van fictie tot werkelijkheid, but not as we know it. We willen de twee curators van het festival, Asmaa Azaizeh en Abeer Soliman, aan de hand van vier verschillende persoonlijke, dan wel

beschouwende verhalen een aantal vragen voorleggen die naar ons idee aan de kern van het festival raken. Welke rol speelt de af- of aanwezigheid van de schrijver in sociaal en politiek complexe omgevingen? Hoe zien schrijvers hun eigen rol in die context? Hoe gaan zij om met politiek gekleurde archieven en bronnen, en in hoeverre valt er literair te documenteren als de werkelijkheid zich op intense wijze aan de auteur opdringt? Ik kijk enorm uit naar de reacties van Abeer en Asmaa op de verhalen van Frank Westerman, Jack Segbars, Mattijs van de Poort en Ghayath Almadhoun. Hopelijk zie ik je daar!

Asmaa Azaizeh AND Abeer Soliman The idea of starting the festival Read My World was inspired by multiple meetings with two remarkable women: Asmaa Azaizeh from Palestine and Abeer Soliman from Egypt. Who are they? And why were these writers selected for the festival? Asmaa is working as a journalist and a cultural manager for multiple literary and art related events, in Haifa and in Ramallah. Besides that, Asmaa
is a poet herself and is able to combine this with her daily job as an anchor for Palestinian National Television. Asmaa: ‘The Palestinian authors I introduced mainly write about their daily lives, their difficulties and hopes. Often, their work is associated with their work in the public arena as a journalist, blogger or cultural and political activist. This brings an added value to their text, since this writing is inspired by real life
events and not coming from isolated rooms. But next to their activism, they are true aesthetics, trying to bring delight and fun to their audience, but also leave an impact on the mind and soul of the reader.’ Abeer Soliman is a multitasking woman as well: she works as a storyteller, and is cultural program manager at the Noon Foundation for Culture and Arts. She introduced to Read My World not only writers, but also an exceptionally courageous publisher, Karam Youssef, and a strong and outspoken documentary filmmaker, Neveen Shalaby. They stand out, since their
approach to their business is new and refreshing and reflects the hopes and dreams of a younger generation in the New Egypt. Abeer: ‘In my society, the function of (documentary) literature is to inspire revolutionary activities and express people’s realities. The reason for introducing the selected writers to Read My World is that every one of them has a unique talent and a very distinguished literary voice. Through their literary work, they express Egypt’s pains, dreams, disappointments, hopes, grievances, and desire for a better future.’

Wat van ver komt is lekker, luidt het spreekwoord. Het is geweldig dat Read My World zo veel verschillende internationale schrijvers te gast heeft: om te lezen, om naar te kijken, om naar te luisteren en om mee te praten. En ze gaan ook praten over hun werk met Amsterdamse scholieren tijdens het festival. De leerlingen op hun beurt laten weten wat ze denken over het werk van de schrijver of schrijfster. Het mooie van Read My World is dat de scholieren een volwassen plek hebben in de programmering: ik kijk uit naar het gesprek dat de jongeren van scholen in Amsterdam hebben met

Gaat het werken? Kun je dit doen: de programmering van een internationaal literatuurfestival eerst helemaal uit handen geven om het pas in tweede instantie naar je toe te trekken, te gaan stoeien met de oeuvres die tot je zijn gekomen via de curators, waar je dan maar blind op moet vertrouwen? Kun je dit doen: een Egyptische die haar ervaringen met de bloedige revolutie op het Tahrirplein verwerkt in haar poëzie zomaar bij zo’n rare Nederlandse discussie over ‘ironie’ betrekken, die onbevredigende, zwaar ondergetheoretiseerde splijtzwam van de Nederlandse literatuur?

Read my World is het spannendste programmerings experiment waar ik ooit over heb mogen meedenken. Het is een live essay: een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van de literatuur, van de literaturen die ons steeds maar blijven ontglippen omdat we dit experiment niet eerder aan durfden te gaan. Het zal alle kanten op schieten; het zal niet bij elkaar gebracht worden; Read my World zal pas slagen als het voldoende lijntjes opengooit om het onderzoek na afloop voort te zetten. Naar dat onderzoek zie ik ontzettend uit. De bizarre leessessie met de op het oog zo verschillende dichters Ghayath Almadhoun en Willem Jan Otten. Het
gesprek tussen Badr en Van der Graaff, en niet te vergeten: de intensieve leessessies in de zitkuil die ik met partner in crime Joost Baars zal organiseren. De literaire cocktail samengesteld door Christine Otten op de vrijdagavond, waarin de talen en genres over elkaar heen zullen buitelen. De immer vlijmscherpe observaties van Jack Segbars over de verhouding tussen literatuur en journalistiek. En wat zal er over blijven van Lucebert in een buitenlandse receptie?

Asmaa Azaizeh is een Palestijnse dichter en journalist, en curator voor Read My World. Ze studeerde Engelse taal en journalistiek aan de Universiteit van Haifa, en werkte voor verschillende lokale kranten en radiostations. Momenteel is ze nieuwsredacteur en presentatrice van het radiostation Raya FM en op de nationale Palestijnse televisie, en poëzieredacteur op de website Qadita. Als dichter won Azaizeh in 2010 de Young Writer Award van de Abdel Mohsen Qattan Foundation. In 2011 verscheen haar eerste dichtbundel onder de titel Liwa. Momenteel werkt ze aan een tweede bundel over de mythische held Joris. Ze publiceerde in verschillende literaire tijdschriften en bloemlezingen en trad op tijdens poëziefestivals. Haar werk werd vertaald in het Engels, Duits, Perzisch en Hebreeuws. Abeer Soliman is schrijfster, verhalenvertelster en de Egyptische curator van Read My World. In Egypte treedt ze regelmatig op voor een publiek van alle leeftijden. Zo maakte ze onder andere een Arabische versie van Heidi, maar ook Shaharazad’s Duizend en een Nacht behoort tot haar repertoire. Een van de onderwerpen die Abeer na aan het hart gaan is de positie van de alleenstaande vrouw in Egypte. Een kwestie die sinds de revolutie alleen maar urgenter is geworden. Ze schreef er veelvuldig over op haar weblog en deze columns zijn gebundeld in een boek getiteld Diary of a Single Lady. Kirsten van den Hul is ‘The Change Agent’. Ze werkte voor verschillende NGO’s, studeerde Arabisch en sinds 2006 werkt ze als zelfstandige change agent voor verschillende opdrachtgevers. In 2011 werd ze benoemd tot VN vrouwenvertegenwoordiger namens Nederland. Kirsten schrijft een wekelijkse column voor het AD en legt momenteel de laatste hand aan haar eerste boek. Nathalie Baartman Cabaretière met een Twentse tongval. Nathalie maakt zich zorgen om de wereld en steekt dat niet onder stoelen of banken. Ze denkt hardop en vindt oplossingen waar anderen niet op komen. Haar wereld is niet die van smartphones en pc’s. In haar wereld breien en lezen de mensen in de trein. Malaka Badr is journaliste voor o.a. The Egyptian Independent en dichteres. In 2012 verscheen haar eerste bundel (niet vertaald): Without Heavy Losses. Badr is te gast op het Read My World Festival 2013. Frank Boeijen Zanger, dichter, componist en muzikant. In de jaren ’80 was hij populair met de Frank Boeijen Groep, een belangrijke band uit de Nederlandstalige golf die de Nederpop uit die tijd doormaakte. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door poëtische, vaak melancholieke teksten en melodieuze muziek in een stijl tussen pop en chanson. Tarik Hamdan is Palestijns dichter en musicus. Zijn eerste dichtbundel Once when I was a Sperm werd
gepubliceerd in 2010. Zijn gedichten zijn vertaald naar het Engels, Frans, Spaans en Koreaans. Hij is hoofdredacteur van Filstin Ashahab – een maandelijks kunst -en literatuurmagazine voor jonge Palestijnse kunstenaars en schrijvers. Ook is hij actief in diverse media en kunstprojecten in Palestina en de rest van de Arabische wereld. Ala Hlehel bracht vier boeken uit: The circus (Ramallah, 2000); Stories in the time of need (Beirut, 2004); The father, the son and the lost ghost (Cairo, 2008); My secret affair with Carla Bruni (Qadita books, 2012). Hij kreeg drie keer de eerste prijs van the Qattan Foundation. In 2009 won hij de Beirut39 voor beste schrijver van Arabische afkomst. Lieve Joris Internationaal bekend als schrijfster van non-fictie boeken over de Arabische wereld, Oost-Europa en Afrika. Bekende en bekroonde titels van haar zijn Mali Blues, De hoogvlaktes en Een kamer in Caïro. In het najaar van 2013 verschijnt Op de vleugels van de draak. Typhoon komt uit een gezin waarin verhalen, taal en muziek een grote rol spelen: zijn beide broers zijn eveneens rapper en zijn zus is zangeres. Zelf brak hij al op jonge leeftijd door met het winnen van de Grote Prijs 2004. ‘Met zijn experimentele houding en inventieve stijl heeft hij de grenzen van de Nederlandse hiphop opgerekt’ (juryrapport Zilveren Harp, 2009). Anne Vegter Dichteres des Vaderlands. Naast dichteres is Anne ook toneel- en kinderboekenschrijfster. In januari 2012 won Anne Vegter de Awater Poëzieprijs 2011 voor haar bundel Eiland berg gletsjer. Andere bekende titels van haar hand zijn Spamfighter en Ongekuiste versies. Menno Wigman Stadsdichter van Amsterdam, bloemlezer en vertaler. Juan Pablo Nahar, geboren 1952 in Paramaribo (Suriname), begon al op jonge leeftijd met musiceren en contrabas spelen. Nahar heeft opgetreden en opgenomen met Jan Akkerman, Margie Evans, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Cornell Rochester, David Murray, Misha Mengelberg en Han Bennink en vele anderen. Christine Otten Met haar roman De laatste dichters (2004), een meeslepend, muzikaal epos gebaseerd op de turbulente levens van een groep Afro-Amerikaanse dichters uit de Black Powertijd, brak Christine Otten door naar een groot publiek. Van haar hand verschenen ook de romans Als Casablanca en In wonderland. Dit jaar verscheen het autobiografische Om adem te kunnen halen.

Read My World kicks off on September 13 with a dazzling revue, celebrating the versatility of literature. Dutch and international guests of the festival will present themselves, giving a small preview of what we can expect at the festival. Storytelling is what the opening night of Read My World is all about. Stories from all corners of the world. Narrated, sung, or read aloud. With or without music. From Palestine, Egypt, Twente, Amsterdam, and more. Writer Christine Otten will host this literary revue with writers, poets, theater producers, and musicians from home and abroad. The program opens with a conversation between Asmaa Azaizeh and Abeer Soliman who will talk with Kirsten van den Hul. Read My World trapt op 13 september af met een wervelende revue, waarin we de veelzijdigheid van literatuur vieren. Nederlandse en internationale gasten van het festival presenteren zich en geven alvast een kleine preview van wat je op het festival allemaal tegen kunt komen. W Asmaa Azaizeh studied English and journalism at the University of Haifa. She worked for various local newspapers and radio stations. She currently holds the position of news editor and is a presenter at radio station Raya FM, as well as the national Palestinian television. She is a poetry editor for the website Qadita. Azaizeh is a poet as well. In 2010, the Abdel Mohsen Qattan Foundation awarded her with the Young Writer Award. Her first collection of poems, Liwa, came out in 2011. She has published in various literary magazines and anthologies and has performed at poetry festivals. Her work has been translated into English, German, Persian, and Hebrew. Abeer Soliman is an Egyptian writer and storyteller. In Egypt, she regularly performs for audiences of all ages with a wide range of works, from an Arab version of Heidi to Shahrazad’s Thousand and one Nights. One of the subjects Abeer is passionate about is the position of single women in Egypt, an issue that has become more urgent since the revolution. She frequently writes about this on her blog and has collected these articles in a book entitled Diary of a Single Lady. Kirsten van den Hul is the change agent. She worked with several NGO’s. She studied Arabic, and since 2006 she works as an independent change agent on a wide range of projects. In 2011 The Netherlands Women’s Council appointed her as UN Women’s Representative. Kirsten writes a weekly column for Dutch daily AD and is currently finalizing her first book. Nathalie Baartman Standup performer. Nathalie is worried about the world and makes no secret of it. She thinks out loud and finds solutions that others haven’t thought of before. Her world does not consist of smartphones and PC’s. In her world, people knit and read on the train. Malaka Badr works as a journalist for various media amongst which The Egyptian Independent and is also a poet. In 2012, her first collection of poems Without Heavy Losses (untranslated) was published. Frank Boeijen Singer, poet, composer, and musician. Became popular in the 1980s with the Frank Boeijen Groep, a band that played an important role in the wave of music with Dutch lyrics of that period. Frank Boeijen’s body of work is characterized by poetic, often melancholic lyrics and melodious music that walks the line between pop and chanson. Tarik Hamdan is a Palestinian poet and musician. His first collection of poetry Once When I was a Sperm was published in 2010. His poems have been translated into English, French, Spanish and Korean. He is the Editor in Chief of Filstin Ashabab – a monthly arts and literature magazine for young Palestinian artists and writers. He is also active in diverse media and
art projects in Palestine, and the Arab world. Ala Hlehel has published four books: The circus (Ramallah, 2000); Stories in the time of need (Beirut, 2004); The father, the son and the lost ghost (Cairo, 2008); My secret affair with Carla Bruni (Qadita books, 2012). He was awarded first prize by the Qattan foundation three times and Beirut39 in 2009 for the best writers of Arab origin. Lieve Joris Internationally known as a writer of non-fiction books about the Arab world, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Amongst her most well known and award winning books are Mali Blues, De Hoogvlakten (The High Plains), and Een kamer in Caïro (A Room in Cairo). In the fall of 2013, her new book will come out, entitled Op de vleugels van de draak (On the Wings of the Dragon). Typhoon was raised in a family in which stories, language, and music played an important role. Both of his brothers, like he himself, are rappers and his sister is a singer. Typhoon made his breakthrough at a young age when he won the Grote Prijs (Grand Prize) in 2004. ‘With his experimental attitude and inventive style, he has stretched the boundaries of Dutch hip hop’ (jury report Zilveren Harp, 2009). Anne Vegter poet laureate. Besides her poetic work, Anne also writes plays and children’s books. In January 2012, Anne Vegter won the Awater Poetry Prize 2011 for her collection of poems Eiland berg gletsjer (Island Mountain Glacier). Other well-known titles of hers include Spamfighter and Ongekuiste versies (Uncensored Editions). Menno Wigman Official city poet of Amsterdam, anthologist, and translator. His official debut came out in 1997, entitled ’s Zomers stinken alle steden (In Summer All Cities Stink). For three days in a row, Festival Cleopatra, in cooperation with the Egyptian Youth Centre, will continuously present music, dance, theater, and graphic art from Egypt, each day from 11 AM till 3 PM. Performances include: folkloristic dance from all corners of Egypt by the Baladi Group, the installation El Moalikaat by Shawky Ezzat, and a fashion show by the Noordeling Vrouwenclub (Noordeling Women’s Club). Furthermore, Multi-Cocina will cater a market with Egyptian products and food. Come see, hear, and taste the Egypt of the North of Amsterdam! Stichting Cleopatra is a foundation which organizes various activities in the North of Amsterdam, and aims to exchange knowledge and culture between Egypt and the Netherlands. The Egyptian Youth Centre organizes a variety of activities in which young people participate actively, ranging from debates to musical gatherings. Festival Cleopatra in samenwerking met het Egyptian Youth Centre presenteert drie dagen lang van 11 tot 15 uur doorlopend muziek, dans, theater en beeldende kunst uit Egypte. Mohammed Azaay is an actor. He graduated in 2000 at the Amsterdam theatre school. Ever since, he played in a wide range of televisionseries and films. Next to his activities as an actor for television and film he also performed in the theatre with his theatre group: De Varkensfabriek. Funda Müjde is a multitalented stand-up comedian, actress, columnist and moderator. She is attentive, spontaneous, authentic and topical. Funda writes, acts and presents like she is: with an original view on political and social issues, sometimes provocative, but always with humor, selfmockery and full of energy. Sabri Saad El Hamus is a Cairo-born actor. Ever since his graduation at the theatre school in Arnhem he played significant roles in theatre, television series and film. Since 2007 he is the artistic director of theatre group De Nieuw Amsterdam. Nassim Soleimanpour is an Iranian playwright. Nassim is not allowed to leave his homecountry, but his play White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been touring around the globe for years now and is a huge international theatre hit.

Daarnaast speelde hij veelvuldig in het theater met zijn eigen theatergroep: De Varkensfabriek. Funda Müjde is een veelzijdige cabaretière, actrice, columniste en presentatrice. Ze is alert, spontaan, eigenzinnig en actueel. Funda schrijft, acteert en presenteert zoals zij is, met een eigen kijk op politieke en maatschappelijke thema’s, soms provocerend, altijd met humor, zelfspot en energie. Sabri Saad El Hamus is acteur afkomstig uit Caïro. Sinds zijn afstuderen aan de theaterschool in Arnhem speelde hij belangrijke rollen in theater, televisieseries en films. Sinds 2007 is hij de artistiek directeur van Theatergroep De Nieuw Amsterdam. Nassim Soleimanpour is Iraans toneelschrijver. Nassim mag Iran niet uit, maar zijn toneelstuk White Rabbit Red Rabbit reist inmiddels al enkele jaren de hele wereld over en wordt overal lovend onthaald.

Picture this: you’re 29 years old and not allowed to leave your country. In this performance, Nassim Soleimanpour from Iran dissects the experience of a whole Iranian generation in a highly original way. Without director, without scenery, and in each performance, a different actor takes on the job. The production was an international hit at many fringe festivals and with a bit of luck, Nassim Soleimanpour will be present himself for the first time in the Netherlands. Performance in coöperation with the Amsterdam Fringe Festival. Stel je voor: je bent 29 en je mag je land niet uit. De Iraanse Nassim Soleimanpour ontleedt in deze voorstelling de ervaring van een hele Iraanse generatie op een buitengewoon originele manier. Geen regisseur, geen decor, en voor elke voorstelling doet een andere acteur het werk. De voorstelling was een internationale hit op vele fringefestivals en met een beetje geluk is Nassim Soleimanpour voor het eerst zelf aanwezig in Nederland. Joost Baars (1975) is a poet, essay writer, podcaster, publisher of chapbooks and bookseller. His poems were published in magazines like Liegend Konijn, Blue Turns Grey and Revolver. Together with Matthijs Ponte he makes a podcast called VersSpreken that won the national prize at the European podcast Award. He runs a no-budget publishing house called Halverwege Chapbooks. His writings in Poëziekrant and deRecensent.nl touch on poetry, film, culture and politics. Matthijs Ponte (1982) is a philo sopher, poet and director of Read My World. He wrote for Awater, de Reactor, Joop, Vooys en DWB and worked as a programmer for Perdu, Read My World and Schijnheilig, where he is also the initiator of an autonomous university. His chapbook is forthcoming at Halverwege Chapbooks. Together with Emile den Tex he created a social media-bot called The Postpoet, that generates poetry out of social media entries. Together with Joost Baars he produces and hosts the poetry podcast VersSpreken.

Rather than merely a podcast about poetry, VersSpreken (the Dutch PoemTalk) is a podcast about conversation. This conversation always revolves around one poem, and takes place between four readers. Founders Matthijs Ponte and Joost Baars, completed by two frequently returning guests, are not afraid of close reading, but do not avoid unorthodox associations either. Without exception, this results in extraordinary conversations, which focus on reading a poem, but in the end, like the discussed poems, can revolve around anything. Jochem van den Berg (Haarlem, 1982) founded the satirical website De Speld in 2007, together with Melle van den Berg (not related). At the time, he was still studying philosophy and religion, but after he got his degree he became full time editor in chief at the satirical website. Diederik Smit (Maastricht, 1987) is a conservative stand-up artist as well as editor at De Speld. In 2009, he won the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival and in the same year was asked to write content for diederiksmit.nl. In 2011, he performed at the Cameretten finals. Sake van der Wall (Amsterdam, 1979) studied philosophy and journalism at the University of Amsterdam. After several detours, he started teaching philosophy at high school and writing articles for, amongst others, De Speld. Maarten Westerveen (Groningen, 1981) studied History at the University of Utrecht. He has been working for broadcasting company VPRO since 2007, where he started at Geert Mak’s In Europa (In Europe) and moved on to the cultural radio show De Avonden (The Evenings). Westerveen made a number of radio documentaries as well as a radio play and hosted a Marathon Interview in 2012.

Maarten Westerveen (Groningen, 1981) studeerde Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij werkt sinds 2007 voor de VPRO, eerst bij Geert Maks ‘In Europa’, daarna voor het cultuurprogramma De Avonden. Westerveen heeft een aantal radiodocumentaires en een hoorspel gemaakt en verzorgde in 2012 een Marathoninterview.

De Speld (The Pin) creates news. News about matters that haven’t actually happened, but rub against the borders of reality. News which exposes traditional media or, on the contrary, masks and encodes it. News which confuses the reader about its status and by that, the status of all other news. In the world that De Speld reports about, Dutch State Secretary Fred Teeven can suddenly be hacked and turn into a no-border activist, the evergreen poem ‘Jonge Sla’ (‘Young Lettuce’) by Rutger Kopland is finally adapted for the big screen and ‘unnecessary repetitions, repeating themselves without any added value, often turn out to be useless and redundant’. On Saturday afternoon, De Speld-authors Sake van der Wall, Jochem van den Berg, and Diederik Smit will dive into the archives of six years of De Speld. Hosted by Maarten Westerveen, they will examine why De Speld is so successful and explain how they relate to similar international satirical websites, such as the American The Onion De Speld maakt nieuws. Nieuws over zaken die niet echt gebeuren, maar die tegen de werkelijkheid aan schuren. Nieuws dat de traditionele media soms ontmaskert of juist maskeert en codeert. Nieuws dat de lezer in verwarring brengt over de status ervan en daarmee over de status van al het andere nieuws. In de wereld waarover De Speld bericht kan staatssecretaris Teeven zomaar gehackt worden en veranderen in een no-borderactivist, wordt de evergreen ‘Jonge sla’ van Rutger Kopland eindelijk verfilmd en blijken ‘onnodige herhalingen die twee keer hetzelfde zeggen en niets toevoegen vaak overbodig en nutteloos’. Zaterdagmiddag duiken De Speld-auteurs Sake van der Wall, Jochem van den Berg en Diederik Smit in de archieven van zes jaar De Speld. Onder leiding van Maarten Westerveen onderzoeken zij waarom De Speld zo succesvol is en vertellen ze hoe ze zich verhouden tot vergelijkbare internationale satirische websites als het Amerikaanse The Onion.

Harkaitz Cano (1975) graduated in Law at the University of the Basque Country. Cano is a writer, script writer, and columnist. He made his debut in 1994 with the collection of poems Kea behelainopean bezala (Like Smoke in a Low-lying Fog). Ever since, he has written three volumes of poetry, five collections of stories, four novels, a chronicle, and an essay. Singer Maite Larburu will talk to author Harkaitz Cano about his book Iemand loopt op de brandtrap / Norbait dabil sute-eskaileran (Someone’s on the Fire Escape), a bilingual collection of poems (Dutch – Basque) that reverberates with echo’s of New York and a random Basque industrial town. A program filled with poetry, music, and pintxos (Bask beer snacks). Iemand loopt op de brandtrap was translated from Basque by Luk Van Mensel and Henrike Olasolo. The translation has partially been made possible by a contribution of the Basque Institute Etxepare. Zirimiri press is an independent publishing house that aims to translate and distribute literary books originally written in minority languages – like Basque, Frisian and Catalan – throughout the Dutch-speaking regions. Zaterdag gaat zangeres Maite Larburu om 15 uur in gesprek met auteur Harkaitz Cano over diens boek Iemand loopt op de brandtrap / Norbait dabil sute-eskaileran, een tweetalige dichtbundel (Nederlands-Baskisch) waarin de echo’s van New York en een willekeurige Baskische industriestad weerklinken. Een programma met poëzie, muziek en pintxos (Baskische borrelhapjes). Iemand loopt op de brandtrap is vertaald uit het Baskisch door Luk Van Mensel en Henrike Olasolo. De vertaling is mede tot stand gekomen dankzij een bijdrage van het Baskisch Instituut Etxepare. Zirimiri press is een onafhankelijke uitgeverij met als doel het vertalen en verspreiden van literaire werken uit minderheidstalen – zoals Baskisch, Fries of Catalaans – in het Nederlands taalgebied.

This year, Eman Abdel Rahim’s debut came out at Al Kotob Khan: a collection of stories entitled Rooms. She also wrote the script for a comical animation series that was aired in Egypt in 2012 (People from the Dragon’s Eye) and appeared in a Danish documentary about young Egyptian authors (1x1x1).

The School of Poetry gives poetry lessons together with Ala Hlehel and Eman Abdel Rahim. High school students from the Open Scholengemeenschap Bijlmer, the Calandlyceum and the international, bilingual class of the Hervormd Lyceum West have read and discussed works of the festival poets Ghayath Almadhoun (Palestine, Syria), Rasha Hilwi (Palestine), Malaka Badr (Egypt), Yasser Abdel Latif (Egypt), and Emmelie Prophète (Haiti). They went on to write poetry themselves, responding to themes in the poems of the festival poets. At Read My World, the young poets themselves will present their poems and subsequently interview the festival poets whose work they’ve been reading. These interviews are led by The Change Agent Kirsten van den Hul. The students will ask candid questions about the international poets’ work and lives and the circumstances under which their work is published. They will also discuss the living conditions of young people in the homeland of these poets. School der Poëzie geeft poëzielessen met Ala Hlehel en Eman Abdel Rahim. Leerlingen van de Open Schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer, het Calandlyceum en de internationale, tweetalige klas van het Hervormd Lyceum West lazen en bespraken op school het werk van festivaldichters Ghayath Almadhoun (Palestina, Syrië), Rasha Hilwi (Palestina), Malaka Badr (Egypte), Yasser Abdel Latif (Egypte) en Emmelie Prophète (Haïti). Elke Geurts (1973) studied Dramatic Writing and Literary Education at the Utrecht School of the Arts. She made her debut with the collection of stories Het besluit van Dola Korstjens (The Decision of Dola Korstjens) (2008), which received numerous nominations and was awarded several prizes. In 2010, her second collection of stories Lastmens came out. Geurts is an active blogwriter and is currently working on her third book. Said el Haji (1976) is a writer, publicist, columnist, blogger, and a writing skills teacher. He studied Dutch literature and linguistics in Leiden and won the El Hizjra Encouragement Prize for his story ‘De kleine Hamid’ (‘Little Hamid’). In 2006, he put together the anthology 25 onder de 35 (25 under 35), in collaboration with Annelies Verbeke. That same year his second novel, Goddelijke Duivel (Divine Devil) came out. Since September 2012 he has regularly been publishing articles in Vonk, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant’s readers’ opinions and background information section. Sanneke van Hassel (1971) made her debut in 2005 with her collection of stories IJsregen (Ice Rain), critically acclaimed for its slightly absurdist atmosphere, poetic style and attention to detail. Van Hassel was asked to spend time in Sarajevo by Vrede van Utrecht (Treaty of Utrecht). She portrayed this trip in Snippers Sarajevo (Shreds of Sarajevo), which was published in the magazine Tirade. In 2007, the second collection of stories, Witte veder (White Feather) was published. In 2012 her third collection of stories came out, entitled Ezels (Donkeys). David Vann (1966) was born on the island of Adak in Alaska and spent his childhood in Ketchikan. He writes for magazines like The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, and Outside. His collection of stories Legend of a Suicide became a worldwide success and has been awarded with, amongst others, the Prix Médicis Étranger, the Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction and the reader’s award of L’Express. In 2011, his debut novel Caribou Island came out. This August and September, he is staying at the Writer’s Residence of the Dutch Foundation for Literature at the Spui. Maartje Wortel (1982) graduated from Rietveld Academy, faculty of Image and Language and made her debut in 2009 with her collection of stories Dit is jouw huis (This Is Your House), for which she was awarded the Anton Wachter Prize in 2010. In 2011 her first novel came out, Half Mens (Half Person), which was nominated for the BNG New Literature Prize and the Opzij Literary Prize. Wortel writes columns for several magazines. Every other week she reads aloud a new short story for the VPRO radio show De Avonden.

The international guests at Read My World have all been asked to photograph the view from their house. These pictures grew into stories and inspired us to ask five writers to create a story in words, about the theme: A view. The things we see are always entwined with our thoughts, our memories, our observations. A view broadens our outlook. But at the same time, a view is an abstract idea in the future, something we wait for, something which offers a way out, or not. These ideas are the starting point for five stories by five renowned writers. Come listen to the stories in a cozy atmosphere on Saturday afternoon. De buitenlandse gasten op Read My World maakten op ons verzoek allemaal een foto van het uitzicht vanuit de plek waar ze wonen. De foto’s die ze maakten werden verhalen op zich en inspireerden ons ertoe vijf schrijvers te vragen een verhaal in woorden te maken over het thema uitzicht. Wat we zien wordt altijd vermengd met wat we denken, ons herinneren, observeren. Een uitzicht verbreedt je blik. Maar tegelijkertijd is een uitzicht ook een abstract gegeven in de toekomst, iets waar je op wacht, iets wat wel of geen uitweg biedt. Deze gegevens bieden het uitgangspunt voor vijf verhalen van vijf gerenommeerde schrijvers. Zaterdagmiddag kun je ze in een knusse setting komen beluisteren.

Yasser Abdel Latif (1969) studied philosophy in Cairo and published collections of poems, novels, and short stories. He also writes for television. Yasser won the Egyptian literary Sawiris Prize for young talent, for his (untranslated) debut novel Qanoun Elweratha, a story about three generations in an Egyptian family. His most recent book, Jonah in the Belly of the Whale, appeared in 2011. Yasser currently lives in Canada.

Stephan Enter made his debut in 1999 with his collection of short stories Winterhanden (Winter hands). It received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Libris Literature Prize 2000. In April 2004, his first novel was published, which was also nominated for the Libris Prize. Both books were nominated for the Gerard Walschap Prize. By the end of April 2007, Enter’s second novel came out, entitled Spel (Game). Enter’s third novel, Grip, was applauded in the media, nominated for the Libris Prize and the AKO Literature Prize, and won the Gouden Boekenuil Reader’s Jury Prize. The book was also awarded the F. Bordewijk Prize. At December 11 2012, Stephan Enter was announced to be the winner of the C.C.S. Crone Prize, the biennial oeuvre prize of the city of Utrecht.
Stephan Enter debuteerde in 1999 met de verhalenbundel Winterhanden die lovend werd ontvangen en genomineerd werd voor de Libris Literatuurprijs 2000. In april 2004 verscheen zijn eerste roman, Lichtjaren, die eveneens een Librisnominatie in de wacht sleepte. Beide boeken werden ook genomineerd voor de Gerard Walschapprijs. Eind april 2007 verscheen Enters tweede roman Spel. Enters derde roman, Grip, werd bejubeld in de media, was genomineerd voor de Librisprijs, voor de AKO Literatuurprijs en won de Gouden Boekenuil Lezersjuryprijs. Het boek is tevens bekroond met de F. Bordewijk-prijs. Op 11 december 2012 werd bekendgemaakt dat de C.C.S.Croneprijs, de tweejaarlijkse oeuvreprijs van de stad Utrecht, aan Stephan Enter is toegekend.
Jeroen van Kan has been a radio and television anchor for years. Twice a week, he hosts the VPRO radio show De Avonden (The Evenings). He was involved with the creation of the Digital City and has also worked at radio broadcasting company Amsterdam FM. Later on, he was an anchorman at AT5 for years, and also hosted television shows for the same broadcasting company. At Talpa, he presented his own daily news show. He was also a reporter for RTL Nieuws and worked for Zembla. At VPRO, he occasionally makes radio documentaries.

Jeroen van Kan is al ruim twintig jaar radio- en televisiepresentator. Twee keer per week presenteert hij het VPRO-programma De Avonden. Hij was betrokken bij de start van De Digitale Stad en werkte ook bij de radiozender Amsterdam FM. Later las hij jarenlang het nieuws bij AT5 waar hij ook talkshows presenteerde. Bij Talpa was hij een echte anchorman met een dagelijks eigen nieuwsprogramma. Ook was hij verslaggever bij RTL Nieuws en werkte hij voor Zembla. Bij De VPRO maakt hij af en toe ook radiodocumentaires.

This is a program all about the memories of and the longing for the observations from childhood, in which we saw the world as an honest and magnificent place. With the passing of time, it becomes more of a challenge to look at that same world in the same innocent way, changed by our experiences as an adult. Both Yasser Abdel Latif and Stephan Enter have an exceptional talent for bringing back memories that go way beyond nostalgia. Both men have completely different backgrounds, but share the same sense of detail by which they evoke a long gone world. Why this obsession with memories? A confrontation between two writers who are an ocean apart, but who are both sitting at practically the same writing table. Or are they? Dit programma draait om herinneringen aan en verlangen naar observaties uit de kindertijd, waarin je blik een hele (h)eerlijke wereld omvatte. Met het verstrijken van de tijd wordt het een steeds grotere uitdaging om diezelfde wereld even onbevangen, maar nu door het vizier van een volwassene met bagage te beschrijven. Zowel Yasser Abdel Latif als Stephan Enter is een meester in het ophalen van herinneringen die ver voorbij nostalgie gaan. Het zijn mannen met een geheel andere bagage, maar die met eenzelfde oog voor detail een wereld oproepen die ooit was. Vanwaar hun obsessie met herinnering? Ihab Saloul is a postdoctoral fellow of Cultural Heritage and Identity at the University of Amsterdam, and a visiting professor of Culture and Politics at the Otto-Suhr Institute for Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin. He was a EUMEfellow at the Wissenschaftkolleg zu Berlin (The Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin), and previously taught Comparative Literature and Media Studies at Maastricht University. Ghada Zeidan was born in Palestine. She is the founder and director of Palestine Link. She is a human right activist and advises a wide range of NGO’s on gender issues, Middle East politics and policy.
Ihab Saloul doet postdoctoraal onderzoek naar cultureel erfgoed en identiteit aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is visiting professor Cultuur en Politiek aan het Otto-Suhr Instituut voor Politieke wetenschappen, Vrije Universiteit Berlijn. He was EUME-Fellow aan The institute for Advanced Study Berlin en doceerde eerder Literatuur en Mediastudies aan de Universiteit van Maastricht. Ghada Zeidan is afkomstig uit Palestina en oprichter en directeur van Palestine Link. Ze is actief als mensenrechtenactiviste en adviseert vele NGO’s op het gebied van gender, Midden Oosten politiek en beleid.

Ghada Zeidan, director of Palestine Link, will talk to dr. Ihab Saloul about the contemporary meaning of Palestinian ‘resistance literature’. Dr. Ihab Saloul is assistant professor of Cultural Studies and research fellow of Cultural Heritage and Identity at the University of Amsterdam. He currently works on his new book, which is about the aesthetics of ‘displacement’ in exile in the cultural memory of Palistinians and Israeli’s. The working title is Contested Memories: Homeland’s Rhetoric in Palestinian and Israeli Third Generations’ Narratives. About Palestine Link: Palestine Link advocates Palestinian national and human rights, and promotes Palestinian interests. It seeks to set Palestine and the Palestinians positively on the European agenda through challenging the current myths and stereotypes, and functioning as a bridge to link up people and organizations in the Netherlands and Palestine. Hassnae Bouazza is a journalist, columnist, translator, and television maker. She studied English linguistics at the University of Utrecht and, after her graduation, one year of French literature at the same university. Hassnae has an outspoken opinion, which she offers in several media: by writing articles for magazine Vrij Nederland, newspapers NRC Handelsblad and de Volkskrant, the website Frontaal Naakt (Frontal Nude) and the Arabic part of the website of radio broadcasting company Wereldomroep. Besides that, she writes for Elle, reviews books for the Dutch Foundation of Literature, and is a program maker at the Writers Unlimited Festival. She regularly appears in the media to interpret and comment on current affairs, for example at BNR radio and Bureau Buitenland of VPRO at Radio 1. In May 2013, she started a new blog: www.aichaqandisha.nl
Hassnae Bouazza is journalist, columnist, vertaler en programmamaker. Ze studeerde Engelse taalen letterkunde aan de Universiteit van Utrecht en, na haar afstuderen, een jaar Franse literatuur aan diezelfde Universiteit. Hassnae heeft een duidelijke eigen mening en verkondigt deze in verschillende media: zo schrijft ze stukken over de Arabische wereld voor Vrij Nederland en opiniestukken in de NRC, Volkskrant, de website Frontaal Naakt en de Arabisch talige site van de Wereldomroep. Daarnaast schrijft ze voor de Elle, beoordeelt ze boeken voor het Fonds van de Letteren en is ze programmamaker bij het Writers Unlimited festival. Regelmatig verschijnt ze in de media om commentaar te leveren op de actualiteit en zaken te duiden. Zo is ze te horen bij BNR Radio en VPRO’s Bureau Buitenland op Radio 1. Petra Stienen studeerde Arabische en Midden-Oostenstudies. Ze was meer dan tien jaar werkzaam in het Midden-Oosten, onder meer op de Nederlandse ambassades in Caïro en Damascus. Ze schrijft onder andere voor NRC Handelsblad en de Volkskrant, heeft een column in Opzij en treedt regelmatig op als commentator in radio- en tv-programma’s. In februari 2012 won zij de Vrouwen in de Media Award 2011. In 2011 verscheen van haar het boek met de voorzienende titel: Dromen van een Arabische lente. In 2012 zag haar tweede boek het licht: Het andere Arabische geluid.

In January 2013 the book Arabieren kijken (Watching Arabs) came out. In this work, Hassnae Bouazza shows us ‘the ordinary’ people from the Arab world. These are not people who, like the images in the media want to make us believe, burn flags on a daily basis and resent the western world, but people who share universal desires and feelings and who even watch Arab Idol. Bouazza’s book zooms in on the role of the media, on how they have contributed to the current political revolutions and how we deal with this here, in the calm and quiet Netherlands. In this program, we will see a few clips from television series and soaps, which Bouazza has selected especially for this afternoon. Together with Petra Stienen and Asmaa Azaizeh she will discuss why these images determine or overthrow our views on Arabs. In januari 2013 verscheen het boek Arabieren kijken. In dit werk toont Hassnae Bouazza ons de ‘gewone mens’ uit de Arabische regio. Geen mensen, zoals de beelden in de media ons willen laten geloven, die dagelijks vlaggen verbranden en de westerse wereld haten, maar mensen met universele verlangens en gevoelens en ja, zelfs ook naar Arab Idol kijken. Het boek van Bouazza gaat nader in op de rol van de media, hoe die hebben bijgedragen aan de huidige politieke omwentelingen en hoe wij hier in het kalme Nederland mee om gaan. In dit programma bekijken we enkele fragmenten uit televisieseries en soaps die Bouazza speciaal voor deze middag selecteerde. Met Petra Stienen en Asmaa Azaizeh bespreekt zij waarom deze beelden ons beeld van Arabieren bepalen of juist overhoop gooien.

For years now, the Poetry Marathon – indoor in Perdu and outdoor in the Tolhuistuin – has proven that poetry is not a difficult thing. It has done so not by limiting itself to the easiest poetry, but on the contrary, by offering poetry in all its diversity in a curiosity rousing way. Stage lovers and stutterers, anecdotics and hermetics, professionals and adventurers, rookies and graybeards: they will be side by side as well as muddled up at this new edition of the 30 + 30 Poetry Marathon. In two and a half hours, sixty highly heterogeneous poets will pass us by in an unrelenting beat. The concept is extremely simple: thirty poets will each read three poems. Two by themselves and one by a foreign colleague, who was chosen by them. In this special Read My World edition of the Poetry Marathon, some foreign poets will recite as well. They will be asked to do the opposite: to read two of their own poems and one from the Netherlands. The recited poetry will not be interrupted by any introductions, biographical or bibliographical information, or entr’actes and intermezzo’s. In this way, the audience gets to focus itself entirely on the poetry itself, which will present itself in a constant stream, for two and a half hours. Anyone whose attentions wanes, can easily take it up again with the next poet. An excellent opportunity to drown yourself in poetry from the Netherlands and the rest of the world. Al jarenlang bewijst de Dichtersmarathon – indoor in Perdu en outdoor in de Tolhuistuin – dat poëzie niet moeilijk is. Niet door zich te beperken tot de eenvoudigste poëzie, maar juist door de poëzie in al haar diversiteit aan te bieden op een manier die vooral de nieuwsgierigheid prikkelt. Podiumbeesten en prevelaars, anekdotici en hermetici, vaklui en avonturiers, groentjes en grijsaards: ze staan naast elkaar en door elkaar op deze nieuwe editie van de 30 + 30 Dichters marathon. Zestig zeer uiteenlopende dichters komen in ongeveer tweeënhalf uur in een onverbiddelijk ritme voorbij. Het concept is uitermate eenvoudig: dertig dichters lezen elk drie gedichten voor. Twee van henzelf en één van een zelfverkozen collega uit het buitenland. In deze speciale Read My World-editie van de Dichtersmarathon lezen ook enkele buitenlandse dichters voor. Aan hen wordt de omgekeerde opdracht gegeven: lees twee gedichten van jezelf en een uit Nederland. Bij het voorlezen wordt de poëzie niet onderbroken door aan- of afkondigingen, bio- of bibliografische informatie of entr’actes en intermezzo’s. Zo kan de aandacht van de luisteraar zich volledig op de poëzie zelf richten, die zich gedurende tweeënhalf uur als een constante stroom aan hem presenteert. Wiens aandacht toch even verslapt, haakt zo weer aan bij de eerstvolgende dichter. Een uitstekende gelegenheid om je onder te dompelen in poëzie uit Nederland en de rest van de wereld.

Milan Hulsing (Amsterdam, 1973) graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and published illustrations and cartoons in, amongst others, VPRO-gids, Hollands Maandblad, and newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. Hulsing was awarded the Stripschapspenning twice and has made animations for movies (by, amongst others, Sylvia Kristel and Paul Verhoeven). His own film Magic Show currently tours all main festivals. Milan Hulsing has lived in Cairo for years, together with his wife and children.

Eman Abdel Rahim writes short stories in which the subliminal self of disturbed people plays a large part. Playing around with surreal elements is a reflection of the sometimes surrealistic reality in modern day Egypt. She will talk to Milan Hulsing, graphic novelist, who drew the same surrealistic reality of the Egyptian revolution before with his beautiful work Stille Chaos (Silent Chaos). Hulsing also made the work Stad van Klei (City of Clay), an adaptation of the short story of the Egyptian author Mohamed El-Bisatie. ‘Drawn documentary’ offers a conversation about the undermining power of drawn reality, and about how both authors, in different ways, show a fascination for the subconscious in their body of work. Eman Abdel Rahim schrijft korte verhalen waarin het onderbewustzijn van verwarde mensen een grote rol speelt. Haar spel met surrealistische elementen is een regelrechte reflectie van de soms surrealistische werkelijkheid in het hedendaagse Egypte. Ze gaat in gesprek met Milan Hulsing, graphic novelist, die met het prachtige werk Stille Chaos dezelfde surrealistische werkelijkheid van de Egyptische revolutie tekende. Writers Ala Hlehel and Asis Aynan talk to each other about identity, the function of humor, and the role of writers in the public debate. Hlehel’s realistic, humorous narratives operate within the tradition of Palestinian literature as found in the works of Emile Habibi and Ghassan Kanafani. His work has been summarized before in the following way: ‘Emerging from familiar, everyday situations, his texts often develop a parabolic or surreal character, revealing hypocrisy and injustice alongside absurdity, contingency, and transience.’ Asis Aynan (Haarlem, 1980) wrote the autobiographical collection of short stories Veldslag en andere herinneringen (Pitched battle and other memories) (2007), about his youth as a catholic-islamic Berber. He also wrote the novel about an immigrant living in IJmuiden Ik, Driss (2010), which was made into a musical that has successfully toured the country. At the moment, he is working on a new novel and a collection of short stories. He is also a columnist for Folia Magazine and ZemZem. De schrijvers Ala Hlehel en Asis Aynan gaan met elkaar in gesprek over identiteit, de functie van humor en de rol van de schrijver in het publieke debat. Hlehels realistische, humoristische verhalen staan in de traditie van Palestijnse literatoren als Emile Habibi en Ghassan Kanafani. Juan-Carlos Goilo, also known as JC or Kalito, speaks from his subconscious mind. People are continuously touched by daily life experiences, which they tend to forget easily. Juan-Carlos tries to wrap up these experiences in performance poetry. He prefers to expose ‘the ugly and imperfect’. He speaks and writes out of love, but also carries an undertone of criticism, politics, resistance, amazement, and a sense of wonder. UNOM (Untouchable Nobody Outplays Many) grew up on Saint Martin as Jörgen Gario and was one of the first members of the Poetry Circle Nowhere. The first time he got on a stage was in club Paradiso in 2007 and he hasn’t come off it since. UNOM has performed at many venues in the Netherlands, but has also been to places like Johannesburg, Antwerp, and Manchester. He says to be inspired by his creative mom, the philosophy books in his backpack, love, and existentialism. This is translated into clear images mixed with melodious reggae vibes straight from his roots, as well as abstract, explosive spoken word. Windowbird is Mirte Hartland. Windowbird composes, plays music, writes, and tells stories. Since 2010 she is a member of the performance poetry collective Poetry Circle Nowhere. By juggling with written and spoken words, guitar, and singing, Windowbird explores how sound and words can intensify each other. She is a cultural anthropologist and works for Stichting de Vrolijkheid ( The Cheerfulness Foundation) since 2012. This foundation harnesses the power of art to create a safe haven for children and adolescents in Dutch refugee centres.

Read My World has grown from the idea that through modern technology we can easily create new connections over the whole world and are able to get in touch regardless of distance, but that a live encounter with others leaves a far more lasting impression. These gatherings may come in many different shapes and forms: sitting round the fire, during heated debates, but also by bringing together improvisational talents on a stage and letting them respond to each other’s works, each other’s worlds, each other’s words. Read My World is voortgekomen uit de gedachte dat we via moderne technologie heel goed wereldwijd met elkaar in contact kunnen komen en blijven, maar dat er niets zo zeer beklijft als een live ontmoeting. Deze ontmoetingen kunnen allerlei vormen aannemen: zittend bij de vuurkuil, vurig discussiërend tijdens een debat, maar ook door improvisatietalenten bij elkaar op het podium te zetten en ze al luisterend te laten reageren op elkaars werk, elkaars werelden, elkaars woorden. Abeer Soliman’s life was radically turned upside down by the Egyptian revolution. Just like everyone else in the country, she had to reshape her role within post-revolutionary Egypt. The expectations at the time were high, but what is the situation like now? What’s it like to live in a country that’s reinventing itself? What does it mean to be standing in the epicenter of history at one moment, and having to deal with daily life at the next? Het leven van Abeer Soliman werd danig overhoopgegooid door de Egyptische revolutie. Net als iedereen in het land moest ook zij haar rol binnen het post-revolutionaire Egypte invullen. De verwachtingen waren destijds hooggespannen, maar hoe is de situatie nu? Hoe is het om te leven in een land dat zichzelf opnieuw aan het uitvinden is? The fires will be lit and the audience can warm itself to the flaming words and sounds of the storytellers from Mezrab and the singers of the drifting sounds festival. The museum of stories by Krista Peters will be opened up. Master storyteller Sahand Sahebdivani will enter into an alliance with Indian musician Debashish Ganguly, and move into the Persian tradition. In their tragicomic folk full of dry wit, the gentlemen of Les Croissants Terribles will reveal epistles of some of the most pathetic Dutch and Old Testament losers in history. A perfect opportunity to get carried away to all corners of language, sound, and the world, while staring into the fire until the wee hours. Op zaterdagavond keert Read my World terug naar de orale bronnen van de literatuur, worden de vuren ontstoken en kan het publiek zich warmen aan de vlammende woorden en klanken van de verhalenvertellers van Mezrab en de zangers van het zwerfklankfestival. Het verhalenmuseum van Krista Peters zal worden opengetrokken. Meesterverteller Sahand Sahebdivani zal een alliantie aangaan met de Indiase Debashish Ganguly en diens muziek de Perzische traditie intrekken. Hemmerechts has also made a name for herself with her autobiographical essays, of which ‘Taal zonder mij’ (‘Language without Me’) (1997) is undoubtedly her most well-known. With her distinctive style, she articulates complicated themes in emotive and comprehensive wordings. In 2004 she published the travel report V. Notities bij een reis naar Vietnam (V. Notes from a journey to Vietnam). Bui Thanh Hieu (1972) is one of the most popular bloggers of Vietnam, a country troubled by censorship. Under the pseudonym ‘Wind Trader’ he exposes social wrongs. To outsmart the government, he does this in a literary style abundant with irony and historical metaphors. His pieces, distributed through Facebook, as well as his blog, are read by Vietnamese people in and outside of Vietnam. Hieu’s visit is an exceptional event; up until recently he was confined by an exit ban. Marietje schaake (1978) is a politician for the Dutch democratic party D66. On behalf of this party, she is the youngest female member of the European Parliament. Through several committees, she has dedicated herself to freedom of the press and political freedom. In April, she initiated a resolution for freedom of speech in Vietnam. Manon Uphoff (1962) is a Dutch writer of short stories, novels, and essays. In 2002, she won the C.C.S. Crone Award for her entire body of work. Some of her work has been nominated for and awarded with several prizes. Her novel De vanger (The Catcher) was adapted for the big screen. Maartje Duin is a journalist, writer, and radio maker and has worked in the Netherlands, LatinAmerica, the USA, and Asia. She has published two books, worked as a tongue-in-cheek Hollywood reporter for newspaper NRC Handelsblad and wrote the libretto for a children’s opera. She made a report on prosecuted Vietnamese bloggers for newspaper de Volkskrant and broadcasting network VPRO.

We don’t often hear about censorship in Vietnam. But dissident bloggers are weighed down by a true reign of terror in this popular holiday destination. In the past years, many of them have ended up behind bars; others have been battered, prosecuted and intimidated. This has made the communist country one of the ‘Enemies of the Internet 2013’ (Reporters Without Borders). Bui Thanh Hieu is one of the most popular bloggers in Vietnam. Under the pseudonym ‘Wind Trader’ he exposes social wrongs. To outsmart the government, he does this in a literary style abundant with irony and historical metaphors. His pieces are read by Vietnamese people in and outside of Vietnam. Up until recently Hieu was confined by an exit ban. One of the other guests is Kristien Hemmerechts, who wrote a book about her journey through Vietnam; Manon Uphoff talks about the activities of the Dutch division of PEN. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66) initiated a resolution for the freedom of speech in Vietnam. How does a measure like this affect people like Hieu? Maartje Duin, who wrote about Vietnamese bloggers in Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant will host the event. Over censuur in Vietnam horen we weinig. Maar dissidente bloggers zuchten in het populaire vakantieland onder een waar schrikbewind. De afgelopen jaren verdwenen tientallen van hen achter de tralies; anderen worden mishandeld, vervolgd, geïntimideerd. Het maakt het communistische land tot een van de ‘Vijanden van het Internet 2013’ (Reporters Zonder Grenzen). Bui Thanh Hieu behoort tot de populairste bloggers van Vietnam. Onder het pseudoniem ‘Windhandelaar’ stelt hij maatschappelijke misstanden aan de kaak. Hij hanteert een literaire stijl met veel ironie en historische metaforen om de overheid te slim af te zijn. Zijn stukken worden gelezen door Vietnamezen in binnen- en buitenland. Tot voor kort had Hieu een uitreisverbod. Ook te gast is Kristien Hemmerechts, die een boek over haar reis door Vietnam schreef; Manon Uphoff licht het werk van PEN Nederland toe. Jacob Groot (1947) published his first collection of poetry (Net als vroeger, 1970) under his pseudonym Jacob der Meistersänger. It made him one of the pioneers of neo-romantic poetry; poetry that used irony to found a new style of emotional writing. After that he went on a different path. With his baroque idiom he created poems that formed stringent rules for insights that demonstrate themselves. His most recent work is a novel: Adam Seconde (2012). Rob Halpern is a poet who lives and works in San Francisco. The translation of his collection of poems Disaster Suites (Rampensuites) by Frank Keizer and Samuel Vriezen will be presented at Read My World. Frank Keizer Poet, translator, critic. He made his debut in 2012 with the chapbook Dear world, fuck off, ik ga golfen (Dear world, fuck off, i’m out to play golf) at publishing house Stanza. He is a guest editor at Perdu, editor for De Reactor and was a permanent staff member at the literary magazine Parmentier. In 2012, he started the online no budget-magazine Samplekanon, with Maarten van der Graaff and graphic artist Daniël Labruyère. Samuel Vriezen Poet, essayist, composer, pianist. He has worked with several ensembles from home and abroad. With his compositions he has accompanied poems from, amongst others, F. van Dixhoorn, Peter Gizzi (USA), Herman Gorter, and Rob Halpern (USA). Vriezens poetic debut, 4 Zinnen (4 Sentences), appeared in 2008 at publishing house De Wereldbibliotheek. Vriezen is an editor for nY, the Flemish ‘Magazine for Literature, Criticism, and Entertainment.’ Thijs Witty graduaded from Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, where he is now working on his PhD-thesis. He is one of the organisers of Queeristan, an Amsterdam based autonomous festival for Queer politics.

In June 2013, publishing house Perdu started with the Sporenreeks, a new series of translated current experimental poetry. At Read My World, Perdu will discuss the second title: Disaster Suites by Rob Halpern (US), translated and provided with an epilogue by Frank Keizer and Samuel Vriezen. The poems of Disaster Suites came into being during the Bush administration in 2005/2006. They are recordings of the disastrous political landscape of those days, and at the same time seek to provide openings for the desire for new and completely different possibilities. From the heart of disaster, a world that has become ‘fateless’, in which we live without a star map, without a guide, Halperns’ poetry sings with a lively, lyrical voice, compelling, compact, and complex, yet still in the familiar language of our world. Natural catastrophes, politics, war, film and tv, sex, philosophy, economics, and love get mixed up in a rhythmically driven language. In each word, this language battles for meaning in the name of the singing body, against all oppression. Sinds juni 2013 is er de Sporenreeks, een nieuwe reeks van Uitgeverij Perdu die uit vertalingen van hedendaagse experimentele poëzie bestaat. Tijdens Read My World bespreekt Perdu met u de tweede titel uit deze serie: Rampensuites van de Amerikaan Rob Halpern, vertaald en van nawoord voorzien door Frank Keizer en Samuel Vriezen. De gedichten van Rampensuites zijn ontstaan onder het presidentschap van Bush in 2005/2006. Het zijn registraties van het rampzalige politieke landschap van die tijd, die tevens openingen willen bieden voor het verlangen naar totaal andere mogelijkheden. Vanuit het hart van de rampspoed, een ‘lotloos’ geworden wereld waarin wij niet langer op de sterren kunnen varen, zingt Halperns poëzie met een pittige, lyrische stem, meeslepend, compact en complex, en toch herkenbaar als de taal van onze wereld. Natuurrampen, politiek, oorlog, film en tv, seks, filosofie, economie en liefde vermengen zich in een ritmisch gedreven taal, die binnen elk woord de strijd om betekenis aangaat in naam van het zingende lichaam, tegen elke verdrukking in.

Ghayath Almadhoun is a Palestinian poet and journalist born in 1979, in Damascus, Syria. In 2006 he founded, together with the Syrian poet Lukman Derky, The House of Poetry in Damascus. In 2012 he won the Klas de Vylders Award from the Swedish Writers Union. Many of his poems are translated into German, English, Swedish, Italian, Greek and Slovenian. Willem Jan Otten (1951) has an all-round oeuvre under his belt: he writes poetry, narrative prose, plays, criticisms, and essays. He made his debut as a poet with his collection Een zwaluw vol zaagsel (A Swallow full of Sawdust) (1973); his most recent collection, Gerichte gedichten (Pointed Poems), was published in 2011. For his collection of poems Paviljoenen (Pavilions), he was awarded the VSBPoetry Prize 1999, as well as for Gerichte gedichten in 2012. In 1999, Otten received the Constantijn Huygens Prize for his entire body of work. In 2004, his novel Specht en zoon (Specht and Son) was published, which received critical acclaim and was awarded the Libris Literature Prize 2005. In the meantime, Specht en zoon has been sold to Italy (Iperborea), France (Gallimard), Germany (Fischer Verlag), and Sweden (Bonniers). Joost Baars see p. 16

Two poets set out on a domestic journey. Their journeys differ in every way. One of them travels to a city, the other to an island. The city is torn apart by violence, while the island seems to be as peaceful as an island should be. The poets speak two completely different languages. However, there are some similarities. For both of them, the journey is a homecoming, and both of them come home as a stranger. For both of them, the trip entails a fundamental encounter as well as a fundamental change. Because even though only one of them literally travels across the road to Damascus, both of them tread this road in every way but the literal one. In this extraordinary program, the Syrian-Palestinian poet Ghayath Almadhoun and the Dutch poet Willem Jan Otten will read and interweave their poetry series ‘The City’ (Almadhoun) and ‘Eindeligt’ (Otten). In alternating recitals, they will each complete their own journey. Where will they arrive? Are these two extremely different poems, by such different poets, set on a collision course or will they find each other in this other Damascus? Twee dichters maken een binnenlandse reis. De reizen zijn in niets hetzelfde. De een reist naar een stad, de ander naar een eiland. De stad wordt verscheurd door geweld, terwijl het eiland zo vredig lijkt als een eiland hoort te zijn. En de dichters spreken een volkomen andere taal. Toch zijn er ook overeenkomsten. Voor beiden is de reis een thuiskomen, en beiden komen thuis als vreemdeling. Voor allebei betekent de reis een fundamentele ontmoeting en een fundamentele verandering. Want al reist er maar een van hen letterlijk over de weg naar Damascus, in alles behalve de letterlijke zin begaan ze die weg allebei. In dit bijzondere programma lezen en verweven de Syrisch-Palestijnse dichter Ghayath Almadhoun en de Nederlandse dichter Willem Jan Otten hun gedichtenreeksen ‘De Stad’ (Almadhoun) en ‘Eindeligt’ (Otten). In elkaar afwisselende voordrachten volbrengen zij ieder hun eigen reis. Waar komen zij aan? Zijn botsingen tussen deze twee zo verschillende gedichten van zulke verschillende dichters onvermijdelijk of vinden ze elkaar in dat andere Damascus?

Irony is back on the the literary agenda, resulting in a great deal of controversy. Meanwhile, a new generation of writers seems to be emerging worldwide, looking for new ways to relate to irony and the political power of expression that messages seem to lose with the use of this stylistic device. This is well-illustrated by the first line of the Vrije encyclopedie (Free Encyclopedia) by the recently debuting poet Maarten van der Graaff: ‘Let me tell you who I am and then / we can finally move on.’ This desire to move on also seems to be essential and obvious in the body of work of the young Egyptian poet Malaka Badr. In her poem ‘Death Leans on its Rifle Eating Crackers’, she writes about her experiences in the uprising on Tahrir Square: ‘We have learned / only to rise / for the funeral procession of a friend.’ Malaka Badr and Maarten van der Graaff will discuss the role of irony in their body of work and the differences between writing in the Netherlands and Egypt, where life these days is turbulent. De ironie staat momenteel weer stevig op de literaire agenda en leidt tot menige polemiek. P.F. Thomése schreef de ironie onlangs zelfs een open brief. Tegelijkertijd lijkt er zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten momenteel een nieuwe generatie schrijvers op te staan die een andere verhouding zoekt tot de ironie en de politieke zeggingskracht die boodschappen via het gebruik van dit stijlmiddel haast als vanzelf lijken te verliezen. Niet voor niets liet bijvoorbeeld de onlangs gedebuteerde dichter Maarten van der Graaff zijn ‘Vrije encyclopedie’ openen met de zin: ‘Laat ik je vertellen wie ik ben en dan / kunnen we eindelijk verder.’ Die wil om verder te gaan is ook in het werk van de jonge Egyptische dichteres Malaka Badr reeds in beginsel even noodzakelijk als evident, lijkt het. In haar gedicht ‘De dood leunt op zijn geweer en eet nootjes om de tijd te verdrijven’ schrijft ze naar aanleiding van haar ervaringen tijdens de opstanden op het Tahrirplein: ‘We hebben geleerd / om alleen nog op te staan / als er een rouwstoet van een vriend langskomt’. Malaka Badr en Maarten van der Graaff in gesprek over de rol van ironie in hun werk en de verschillen tussen het schrijven in Nederland en het momenteel roerige Egypte.

The complete body of work of Lucebert (1924-1994), the most well-known post-war experimental poet of the Netherlands, will be translated into English. Recently, the first of the four intended volumes was published, containing all of Lucebert’s poetry up until 1952, translated by Diane Butterman at Green Integer. Lucebert’s work is deeply embedded in Dutch literary history, but internationally he is, despite a number of translations, not that well-known yet. With this new translation, his work has become accessible to a larger, international audience. How will this audience respond to Luceberts experimental poetry? During this program, his work will be recited bilingually and poets and readers from different countries and various contexts will react to these poems. How does the experimental and ‘empirical’ poetry of Lucebert work out for them? Will they be able to break open the traditional reception of Lucebert? Het volledig poëtisch werk van Lucebert (1924-1994), de bekendste naoorlogse experimentele dichter van Nederland, wordt naar het Engels vertaald. Onlangs verscheen het eerste van de vier beoogde delen, met daarin Luceberts poëzie tot en met 1952, in een vertaling van Diane Butterman bij Green Integer. In de Nederlandse literatuurgeschiedenis is Lucebert stevig verankerd, maar internationaal geniet hij, ondanks een aantal vertalingen van zijn werk, nog weinig bekendheid. Met deze nieuwe vertaling is zijn werk toegankelijk geworden voor een groter, internationaal publiek. Hoe reageert dit publiek op Luceberts experimentele poëzie? ‘Where shall the word be found, where will the word resound?’, American-British poet T.S. Eliot wrote in 1930. In the year 2013, the Palestinian poet Tarik Hamdan responds: ‘The word is in “space”, which is the country of thoughts and words in the modern age’. During Read My World, both a Dutch and a Palestinian online platform for young writers will present their work. Filistin Ashabab is an online platform for art, literature, and youth culture in Palestine that also produces a magazine, a radio show, and festival. Young Palestinians have been able to express themselves freely here since 2008. Editor in chief and poet Tarik Hamdan (1982) is our guest and will introduce Filistin Ashabab. Hard//hoofd is an online platform for art and journalism in the Netherlands. New articles, drawings, and video’s are posted on this site on a daily basis. In the near future, the editorial staff will launch its own podcast. Artistic editor in chief Maartje Smits (1986) will introduce Hard//hoofd. Afterwards, Tarak Hamdan will sing poems written by himself. He will accompany himself on the oud (stringed instrument). Mattijs van de Port works as an anthropologist, for both of Amsterdam’s universities. He has published several books on various topics, amongst which the Balkan wars, gypsies seen through the eyes of Serbs, criminal retribution in the Netherlands, and the Brazilian religious movement Candomblé.

In 2009, he produced the publication ‘Rondom – All around the periphery’, about the overlap between positions and domains. In his work Inertia he recounts his two trips to Palestine in 2009 and 2010.

Frank Westerman (1964) groeide op in Assen en studeerde Tropische Cultuurtechniek. Sindsdien werkte Westerman onder meer als Volkskrant-correspondent in Belgrado, bezocht hij voor NRC Handelsblad tal van internationale brandhaarden en werkte hij als correspondent in Rusland. Over al deze periodes publiceerde hij warm onthaalde boeken. Sinds 2002 is hij fulltime boekschrijver.
Frank Westerman (1964) grew up in Assen and studied Tropical Land Development at the Agricultural University of Wageningen. Ever since he has worked as a correspondent in Belgrade for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, visited many international hotbeds for newspaper NRC Handelsblad and was a correspondent in Russia for the same paper. Westerman has published books on all of these periods on his own account, all of which were warmly received. Since 2002, he writes books on a fulltime basis. Chris Keulemans is the artistic director of The Tolhuistuin, a multi art venue in Amsterdam. In 1984 he founded the literary bookshop Perdu in Amsterdam. During the nineties he worked, first as a curator, later as director, at De Balie, centre for culture and politics in Amsterdam which hosted artists and intellectuals from countries going through war and dictatorship like Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, Algeria, South-Africa, Indonesia, Cuba, Rwanda, Byelorussia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Burma. He has published books, fiction and nonfiction, and has published numerous articles on art, social movements, migration, music, cinema and war for national newspapers.

The Read My World festival explores the boundaries between literature and (research) journalism. The festival challenges the participating authors to present stories that go beyond the cursory headlines with which the news is generally presented to us. But what do these stories sound like? And do they have any literary value? Or rather a journalistic one? The literary-journalistic stories that the, in this context often mentioned author, Arnon Grunberg presents to us, do not in any way offer the reader a picture of what the author has gone through in Afghanistan. Therefore, his reports do not seem to carry the same news value as those in the newspapers. So what value do they have? A literary one? A linguistic one? Maybe, through these stories, Grunberg is trying to show us the large gap between reality and its (linguistic) representation. In the same article, Vriezen refers to this as a ‘gaping truth deficit’. The ways in which literators try to work around this yawning deficit of truth – that is the central question in this program about documentary literature. How do writers close the gap between reality and its (linguistic) representations? What is the effect that a text exerts? What role does the presence or absence of the writer play in socially and politically complex environments? How do writers perceive their own role in that context? How do they handle politically biased archives and sources, and to what extent is it possible to create a literary document, when the harsh reality is forcing itself on the author on a day-today basis? With these questions, the writers, artists, academics, and journalists from Egypt, Palestine, and the Netherlands will examine the extent of realism and truth deficiency in (the state of) documentary literature.

Het Read My World festival onderzoekt dit jaar het grensgebied tussen literatuur en (onderzoeks-)journalistiek. Het festival daagt de bijdragende auteurs uit om verhalen te presenteren die voorbijgaan aan de vluchtige headlines waarin het nieuws ons doorgaans bereikt. Maar hoe zien die verhalen er dan uit? En hebben ze de literatuur wel iets te bieden? Of juist de journalistiek? De literair-journalistieke verhalen die een in deze context vaak aangehaalde auteur als Arnon Grunberg ons presenteert, geven de lezer geenszins een beeld van wat de auteur in Afghanistan heeft meegemaakt. Zijn verslagen lijken daarmee niet dezelfde nieuwswaarde te hebben als die van kranten of dagbladen. Waar schuilt die waarde dan wel in? In het literaire? In de taal? Wat Grunberg via de verhalen wellicht zichtbaar probeert te maken, is de afstand die heerst tussen de werkelijkheid en de (talige) representatie hiervan. Vriezen noemt dit in hetzelfde artikel een ‘gapend werkelijkheidstekort’. Hoe literatoren pogingen doen om dit gapende werkelijkheidstekort te omzeilen – die vraag staat centraal tijdens dit programma over documentaire literatuur. Hoe ‘dichten’ schrijvers de kloof tussen de werkelijkheid en haar (talige) representaties? Welk effect gaat van een tekst zelf uit? Welke rol speelt de af- of aanwezigheid van de schrijver in sociaal en politiek complexe omgevingen? Hoe zien schrijvers hun eigen rol in die context? Hoe gaan zij om met politiek gekleurde archieven en bronnen, en in hoeverre valt er literair te documenteren als de werkelijkheid zich op intense wijze aan de auteur opdringt? Met deze vragen onderzoeken de op zondag aanwezige schrijvers, kunstenaars, academici en journalisten uit Egypte, Palestina en Nederland (de status van) documenterende literatuur op haar realisme en werkelijkheidstekort.

The Camera Obscura (L.), or dark room, was originally an optical device that projected the image of its surroundings onto a screen inside the camera. The camera obscura was first used by the Chinese Mo-ti around 400 BC. He called it his ‘locked treasure room’. Later on, Ibn al-Haytham, or Alhazen or Abu Mazen (965 Basra, Iraq - Cairo 1040), the great Arab scientist and philosopher, wrote in great detail about a camera obscura in his work Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics). Artists like Caravaggio and Vermeer have used the instrument at an early stage. In the black box, the video DEAF (approx. 30’) will be shown continuously. ‘Deaf residents from a refugee camp are given a face and a voice. Their timeless testimony forms a poignant contrast to the soundbites of our current media circus. Through juxtaposition of texts – expressed in sign language – with images from the ghetto, the gaze of the viewer’s eye is turned inward. This creates a new window that overlooks a different reality: we find ourselves at an intermediate station without fixed departures.’ Richard Menken is a Dutch visual artist who regularly travels to the Arabic world. In his video DEAF Palestinian residents of a refugee camp are given a penetrating voice.

The Agenda and Me is a short documentary film shot during the Egyptian Revolution between January 25 and February 11, 2012. Through the eyes of four main characters we learn about the hopes and dreams of the Egyptian youth demonstrating at Tahrir Square. Neveen Shalaby is a young filmmaker from Egypt. She graduated from the Film Academy in Cairo. In 2008 and was selected to join the Berlin Talent Campus. As a director of documentaries she has worked for Al Jazeera, Amnesty International, Metropolis TV and has made over forty documentaries.

Scientists: poems might be relevant A team of scientists have finally discovered that some poems might hold some relevance. It concerns a few Dutch and Egyptian poems, all published in the last two decades. For their research, a team of scientists from several countries have tested twenty poems for relevance. Relevance was defined as ‘having had irreversible consequences on a level higher than quantum level.’ Research leader Bert Bokhoven: “One might think of political or emotional consequences.”
Bokhoven: “We read a poem to test subjects, who were attached to advanced brain and body scanners. The results were clear: in each single subject something definitely happened.” According to Bokhoven, the results may come as good news to poetry lovers. “Our research is a first indicator that people who have been reading all of these years have not been wasting their time. Further research will prove whether other works, such as the Odyssee or Hamlet, have held any relevance.”

From October on, small piles of books will be seen lying around on squares and in public gardens in the Westelijke Tuinsteden of Amsterdam. The Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB - Foundation for Collective Propaganda for the Dutch Book) seeks to tempt loitering youth with this so-called book bait. If the trial turns out to be successful, it will be expanded to other problem area’s. CPNB-director Eppo van Nispen: “All research indicates that
loitering teens are bored. Could you think of anything more meaningful to do with your time than reading? Besides that it’s a win-win situation: the reading teen will no longer cause trouble to the Dutch inhabitants.’
