A

t this point in La La Land’s run you’ll have heard so many (seemingly) hyperbolic declarations of adoration that you’ll either have already rushed out to see the film (the right response) or you’ll have written it off (the wrong response) – presumably assuming musicals aren’t for you, and that everybody really ought to calm down a little. This review isn’t going be light on adoration, but perhaps it can convince you to give this paean to the musicals of old a try. The telling of the tale is the work of barely a sentence: a jobbing actress (Emma Stone) and a struggling jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) chase their dreams. But let’s expand on that: the pair find themselves running into each other with strange frequency, initially making little of the fact; what starts out as an abrasive relationship slowly but surely turns into something more. Although they’re well suited, what they’re best at is crystallising the hopes and dreams of the other, and pushing them towards it.

In the midst of the scene-setting, the meet cute (first, second and third), and the awkward first flirtations, there is indeed some song and dance. Damien Chazelle – the director, who also made the exhilarating and emotionally exhausting Whiplash – became obsessed with the musicals of the 40s and 50s whilst attending film school, and here he faithfully brings their Technicolor joy to the screen. For those that love musicals as much as Chazelle, you’ll find yourself just as taken with his interpretation of them; for those hoping for something more, or something different, that’s on offer too: Gosling and Stone aren’t natural singers or dancers, so there’s a certain frankness and honesty to their delivery and movement that would be missing if Chazelle had hired Zac Effron and Vanessa Hudgens instead. As likeable and watchable as Ryan Gosling is, it’s Stone who carries the heart of the film. The auditions she attends are by turns depressing, heart-breaking, and transcendent. She gets to be funny and wry, devastated


and confused, and wild and joyous. Upon watching the film a second time I had one thought going round and round in my head: give her the awards. All of them. At its simplest level, this is just a boy-meetsgirl story. But it’s elevated by the stunning cinematography (which makes the most of the Technicolor set design and costumes, and the unreal look of Los Angeles at magic hour) and the at times melancholy song writing. Of course, this ignores the last act – which I won’t go into detail about here – which elevates the story further, taking it from the enjoyable, if expected, track that it’s on, and imbuing it with a greater sense of realism than you might expect, whilst also taking the story into a dreamlike hinterland. And that is perhaps the best way to describe La La Land: it’s a kind of waking dream. One capable of being both joyous and melancholy, humdrum and impossible, real and unreal. Take a chance on it, by catching it on board any time this month.

einvigorating the Disney story, tacking away from the familiar and looking for something new, is something Disney have gotten very good at. In Moana, we get what is perhaps their most satisfying - and meta variant on the Dissatisfied Princess Tale.

The story: Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why. In this sweeping, CGanimated adventure, a spirited teenager sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-

mighty demi-god Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. Noting the skill and artistry which goes into a Disney film is old hat at this point, but it’s simply not possible to skip past it: the leaps they’ve made are striking; but what’s more important is how good they are at bringing the characters to life. The little quirks, twitches, frowns and more, that make up the reactions of the characters are part of what make this one of their most lived in worlds. The film’s insistence that it won’t fall back on easy, familiar storytelling also doesn’t do any harm. When Moana sets out to put right a millennium-old curse, she

doesn’t take along the cuter of her two animal sidekicks, she (accidentally) takes along the bedraggled, inept and possibly suicidal one: Heihei, a chicken. When Maui insists that she’ll never be a master sailor (or ‘wayfinder’, as it’s termed here), his main reason is that it’s no job for a princess; at which point he neatly deconstructs the formula that marks her out as a princess. This playful toying with the Disney formula thankfully extends a step further: there’s no unnecessary love interest! For the songs, which are excellent across the board, Disney hired a killer team, Mark Mancina, Opetaia Foa’i and, most excitingly, Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame). xtending a movie franchise as widely revered as ‘Harry Potter’ is always a bold move, with potential either to further endear itself to a faithful audience or to enrage it. With 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, J.K. Rowling takes up this challenge. In her screenwriting debut, Rowling delivers an original screenplay inspired by her 2001 Harry Potter spinoff book of the same name, revolving around a ‘magizoology’ textbook used by Harry and his classmates during their studies at Hogwarts. Leaving England behind, the movie takes the story across the Atlantic and back in time to 1920s New York, where the wizarding community is under threat both from dark, mystical forces and a group of extremist NoMajs (the American term for Muggles). Enter

diffident British author Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). Arriving in the city with a suitcase full of whimsical CGI creatures, Scamander is dragged into this troubled world when an encounter with roly-poly No-Maj Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and proselytising, anti-magic fanatic Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton) leads to some of his capacious menagerie being set free, sending Scamander on a frantic mission to recapture them. The first full-length Harry Potter story to deal explicitly with grown-up characters navigating grown-up realities, Fantastic Beasts is not the straightforward Potter rehash it could very lucratively have been. Adorable comic creatures aside, setting her tale in a complex historical era in which


hedonism and prosperity are accompanied by the rise of more frightening social and political tendencies, Rowling delivers an uncomfortably relevant commentary on repression, intolerance, bigotry and fear, imbued with a deep sense of unease. With many of the old Potter crew returning to bring her narrative to the screen, notably veteran director David Yates, Fantastic Beasts is as visually magnificent as you might expect, with outstanding performances from a cast including Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, and of course Redmayne, who shines as the endearingly oddball guardian of the titular creatures. All told, the film has turned out to be a wise gamble; Potter die-hards will not be disappointed.

ompelling, cerebral sci-fi is thin on the ground. Most sci-fi films of the last couple of decades have focused on bombast and have forgotten that the best sciencefiction shows us an aspect of ourselves, or our world; it takes something small about humanity and warps it till it’s on an astronomical scale (often literally), then asks us to re-evaluate it. Using this simple to describe – but by no means simple to execute – recipe, Director Denis Villeneuve (who has one of the best CVs of any director working today: Sicario, Prisoners and Incendies; and he’s about to add Blade Runner 2049 to that list) has taken Ted Chiang’s short story Story of Your Life, and made one of the most thoughtful – and devilishly ingenious – films of the year.

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity. Villeneuve (and his screenwriter, Eric Heisserer) have made the definitive First Contact film. Arrival uses real science to tackle a seemingly impossible problem: working out how to communicate with an alien life form that is truly Alien, with a capital ‘a’. The way they depict the extraterrestrials – who have a wildly different way of interacting with the world (/universe) – leads to some truly audacious plotting. There aren’t many films that demand a second viewing. There are films that you’re compelled to rewatch because of their

impressive worldbuilding and their epic nature (see: almost all of James Cameron’s cinematic output), but there aren’t many whose fundamental nature is changed by its closing moments; this is one of those rare beasts. Throw into the mix a rarely better Amy Adams, some Nolan-esque cinematography (courtesy of Bradford Young) and a beautifully otherworldly score (by Villeneuve mainstay Jóhann Jóhannsson), and you have the best sci-fi film since the criminally overlooked Cloud Atlas.

All appears to be going wonderfully, with Caramel declaring that she’ll love him till the day she dies. Jump cut 1-year later, and the pair are no longer together. Caramel refuses to have any contact with Dave, and ignores the letters that he’s been writing to her almost daily. Unbeknownst to either, they’ve both left Indonesia and settled in London in an attempt to get away from their painful memories. One night, when returning from a birthday

party, Dave sees a distraught woman in a wedding dress, Adele (Adila Fitri), standing on a bridge and moments away from jumping. He does what any decent young fellow should and tries to talk her down. But this makes her more agitated. So he deploys a bit of reverse psychology to coerce her and, despite a close call when she slips, he manages to get her to safety. Unfortunately for the too-good-for-hisown-good Dave, he finds he’s semi-adopted her, as she refuses to leave his apartment (which he’d taken her to so that she could recover from her ordeal). Complicating matters further, the exuberant and eccentric Adele appears to be falling for him.

Meanwhile, Caramel’s mother attempts to foist Dave’s letters on her daughter, but Caramel won’t read a single one, as it would open up a wound that’s barely starting to scar over. Not helping matters, her friend Bima (Dion Wiyoko) is trying to convince her to date him, and he won’t take no for an answer. Fate intervenes and the two pairs find their stories intertwining. Originally titled Biji Kopi Indonesia (Indonesian Coffee Beans) and directed by Budi Kurniawan, the documentary traces back the history of coffee to its first arrival in the region during the 17th century. The Dutch governor of India sent some coffee seedlings to the Dutch governor of Jakarta, and so began the planting, harvesting and processing of coffee beans, and making them into flavoured fragrant coffee. Ever since then, coffee has entered into millions of people’s lives, and tied up with it is 300 years of tradition, culture, art, science and religion. Today, Indonesia has

become the world’s fourth largest coffee producer. The filmmakers spent the last few years travelling cross country to meet with industry experts, to whom the production of coffee is their life and their livelihood. Seperti telah disebutkan, album-album NOAH sebelumnya banyak berisikan trek yang didominasi suara gitar. ‘Kupukupu Malam’ melanjutkan tren ini dalam album yang baru, dengan korus nyanyian bersama sebagai pemicunya. Ini adalah inti dari NOAH. Untuk mereka yang ingin sesuatu yang sedikit berbeda, terdapat remix dari album ini, yang menampilkan lagu-lagu NOAH dalam versi dansa/disko.
