Bijna elke morzel grond is bewerkt of gebruikt.
2. We onderscheiden drie soorten loofbos: a.
Wild Europe “Give nature the full freedom to develop itself.” (JC Génot, author, ecologist and nature reserve manager in the Vosges) Real wild nature is scarce in Europe. Almost every morsel of ground is cultivated or used. Managing nature is to ‘make it less natural’. If we in Europe want to preserve biodiversity, then we must protect the remaining ecosystems. Nature is still intact there, untouched by human hand. It is the reference for what nature can be, without human interference. It is a place to dream in and to dream about, far away from the daily rush. The wild dream of what Europe once was. The photographic book, “Wild Europe” from Eric Brasseur, crosses the continent from north to south and from east to west in search of the most significant ecosystems. The reader discovers phenomenal primitive landscapes. The old continent has an enormous variety of landscapes, from the North Pole to the Maquis, from the Urals to the Highlands, all in Europe. Through the poetry of the image, over and over we have a scientific explanation of the ecosystem concerned, with a summary declaration of the origin and the concern for biodiversity. Eric Brasseur does not shun the unknown areas, where nature can still be menacing and the people often play a subservient role. The camera captures still images of clouds, seagulls, swimming wolves, young hawks trapped in their nest, ospreys hunting and killer whales skimming the fjords. They are timeless images, secured by a enthusiastic wanderer who ‘lets chance happen’. To put it in Eric’s own words, “You have to earn a good photo”. Not a single image is without meaning. There is a story in every portrait, every landscape or print in black and white or in colour. Also, whenever people appear in the scene, there is poetry in the air. Eric’s work is a never indulgent search for beauty, often in the most surprising places. Wild Europe considers Europe as a continent that stretches from Spitsbergen in the north to Sicily in the south, Iceland in the west to the Urals in the east. The following is an overview of the most significant ecosystems encountered. Ecosystems The largest ecosystems of Europe are determined by the temperature: 5. the polar region 6. the north 7. the temperate zone 8. the Mediterranean zone The mountains are protected from the impact of people by the climate and the relief. It is a refuge for wildlife that merits a separate chapter. 5. the mountains The water environment can be divided into: 6. the deltas and estuaries 7. the sea environment and the coast 1. The polar region.
This is the tundra region, where it is too cold for woodland. It is a very small belt in the extreme north. The Spitsbergen archipelago, a thousand kilometres above the North Cape, illustrates an environment in which the earth remains permanently frozen and glaciers reach down to the sea. This is the domain of the polar bear, the polar fox and the wild geese. Grasses are in bloom during the short polar summer. 2. The north In the cold north there are conifer forests - spruce, fir and larch. The cold delays the evaporation from lakes, marshes and peat bogs in this region. Moose and fish hawks dominate the humid zones and cranes breed in the pet bogs, while the capercaillies inhabit the woods. The Scottish Highlands, in the west and the Urals in the east, form excellent examples of these ecosystems. In Sweden, every year thousands of people watch the return of the cranes. 3. The temperate zone A wide strip in central and southern Europe - the temperature there is higher and with sufficient rainfall the leafy woodland can develop. The trees lose their leaves in the autumn before the frost sets in. We distinguish three sorts of leafy woodland: a. The leafy woodland of central Europe. Lime, maple, beech and oak predominate. Virgin woodland has become a rarity. In Bialowieza in Poland you can find one of the last fragments of what the temperate leafy woodland once was. This is the domain of the European bison and the wolf. b. The leafy woodland of southern Europe The plant growth has adapted to the warm and hot summers. Tough, hairy leaves prevent drying out, the Turkish oak, the Hungarian oak, the chestnut and the black pine form the forest. In the open areas, grazed by flocks of sheep, you can find splendid wild orchids. The Cevennes National Park in France surprises us with its chestnuts, the slopes covered with sheep and the spectacular ravines in which the vultures shelter.
c. The steppes Towards the east, the rain decreases and the woods give way to grassy areas. The steppes to the north of the Caspian Sea are visited by the tawny eagle, the demoiselle crane and Canadian geese. 4. The Mediterranean zone In this region, the temperatures are still higher, the summers are dry and it does not freeze during the winter. Mediterranean trees do not therefore lose their leaves during the winter. The thick bark protects them against fire. The cork oak is the prettiest image next to the green oak, the umbrella pine, the Aleppo pine and the olive tree. In southern Spain, you can find splendid Mediterranean landscapes. The Monfrague Park is notable for the cork oak and green oak, the grassy plains and the rocks. It is an exceptionally rich ecosystem met prestigious animal species such as Bonelli’s eagle, the black vulture, the Iberian lynx, the Iberian eagle and the grey kite. In the springtime there is an abundance of flowers. 5. The mountains Without question, the Pyrenees and the Caucasus deserve a place in this chapter. 6. The deltas and estuaries Numerous animals come here to feed. The most beautiful deltas can be found in eastern Europe - the deltas of the Danube and the Volga. There you can find white pelicans and curly pelicans, white-tailed sea eagles, ducks, herons, sturgeon and catfish. The Rhine, Maas and Scheld deltas – Zeeland – illustrate the coming together of people and nature. The estuary of the Guadalquivir is a stopover for migrating birds just before they fly across the Mediterranean. 7. The open sea A very extensive environment. The following sections emphasise: - the cold, the frozen seas of Norway with killer whales, seals and sea eagles - the temperate seas - the Azores (various whales) - the Mediterranean - the Port Cros reserve and the Ligurian Sea the Greek islands (monk seals and turtles).
