It was a summer afternoon. BoekieBoekie sat on the shore.
The most fantastic thing was the croquet game. There was

“Boring,” said somebody.
We played along.
“I wish there were pictures,” said somebody else.
But one of us didn’t understand the rules, or was it cheating?
“And I wish there was dialogue.”
“You shouldn’t have done that,” whispered Alice.
“There goes a rabbit...”
Too late. The Queen of Hearts burst out in rage.

Nobody was spared. Soldiers took us prisoner.
But this rabbit was different, he was wearing clothes, and crying “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!”
When we were called upon to defend ourselves in court,
He looked at his pocket watch and ran away.
Alice was there too.
We looked at each other in surprise. Was this real,
“First the sentence, then the verdict!” shouted the Queen.
or were we suffering from sunstroke?
“Stuff and nonsense,” said Alice loudly.
Just then a girl walked past. She had long blond curls.
None of us moved, or dared to speak, but when our eyes met,
“That’s Alice!”
we thought the same thing; we longed for the shore, for pen

The Rabbit Hole Rap [Couplet 1] One morning in May on a warm and windless day We’re dreaming by the stream and here is what I mean to say: My sister’s got a book without conversations She sits and reads it for long durations. But why look in a book without pictures to see? I say, sister, I’m bored, come on and play with me. Want to make a daisy chain? You’ve got daisies on the brain. But I’m nobody’s daisy, and I’m tired of the strain Of looking neat and pretty, cause it’s driving me insane. So when I see that rabbit with a watch in its pocket I say, Alice, get up, and I take off like a rocket! [Hook] My name is Alice and I’m feeling kind of rotten Cause I’m falling down a hole and I’ll soon reach bottom. That idiotic rabbit really had me deceived, Now I’m bound to hit ground – and it’s got me peeved.
13
[Couplet 2] I brush by bushes as I dive to my doom I slide down the sides and I glide through the gloom The walls are decorated with maps and pictures Of pirates and planets and exotic creatures. Will I fall straight through to the isle of Java? Meet antelopes? Or get stuck in lava? I’m falling so fast that my ears are ringing, The mice are flying and the owls are twinkling. Will it take another hour? Or maybe even more? Will my adventure turn sour when I hit the floor? [Hook] My name is Alice and I’m feeling kind of rotten Cause I’m falling down a hole and I’ll soon reach bottom. That idiotic rabbit really had me deceived, Now I’m bound to hit ground –

A story that starts and ends in tears I swam round as a mouse in a sea of tears with a human, it’s strange but true. All dripping wet we climbed up on the shore and wondered whatever to do: a dodo, a duck and a deer, an eaglet, a shrew and a boar. I doubt that a mouse has ever had an adventure that’s quite so queer. Our teeth were chattering, it was terribly cold, and I almost started to cry. Without towels, I was sure we’d catch our death. However would we get dry? I began to recite the driest thing of all the dry things I’d heard yet. But as dry as it was, we shivered no less, and remained quite decidedly wet. The dodo decided a caucus race would have us all dry in a trice. The meaning of caucus was lost to us all, but a run would be warming and nice. He chalked out a circle right there on the floor and we set off behind at a trot. We ran and we ran and then ran some more, until the dodo commanded us, “Stop!” “So who is the winner?” enquired the shrew. And the dodo replied, “Everyone.” Alice had sweeties and passed them along, though sadly she had one sweet too few. Alice then asked me to tell her a tale, so she will have won something too. I admitted at once that my tale, though long, was also quite terribly sad.
18
19
“Your tail is long” she replied in surprise, “But doesn’t look sad, not to me.” Then I told her my story with heartbreaking sighs and tears of sorrowful grief.
“Once in a house, that was warm
and so nice there lived an
entire family of mice,
my father and mother
my sisters and brothers
and dozens of cousins and friends
and so on.
Alas, in
that house there was
also a cat a hunter and terror, who soon became

Big en Bouillon
The English tr anslation is expected in December

Biance Boer

Nothing here is real at all, On the beach of Wonderland. What’s curvy is straight. There’s a paper sky. The wind is a sigh. The sun is a ball, the moon’s a balloon and everything’s phony and fake.
The sky is green, so green it’s almost red. The cloud is teensy-weensy small, so small it’s almost big. You’d think the moon is black, but it’s white. And the sun is still up in the night.
I’m an animal but I’m not. You’d think I’m a who, not a what. But instead I am something that mocks. I am an animal that isn’t, not a turtle, just pretend. How sad am I with the head of a calf, and not a whole tail, but only a half! And look at the paws that I’ve got, all mock. And that’s why I cry, I cry and I gasp, very, very sadly – and all for a laugh.

More Tart, Less Talk I am a tasty little tart and unhappy with my part in the proceedings in this place, because this talking, this talking, this talking’s a disgrace. Who said what and who told a lie.
As a tart, it doesn’t matter to me
I only know I’m getting dry.
if I am eaten lawfully.
My icing’s getting thinner by the hour
A perfectly illegal pastry
and my cream, oh, my cream,
is no different to any other –
is starting to turn sour.
it’s really just as tasty. Tart is tart. And a bun’s a bun. But sadder than a child who’s dejected, is a pastry that’s neglected. So stop talking everyone. Shut your traps immediately, and only open them to bite on me! Ilse Bos Translation: David Colmer

Epilogue
Only in my dreams can the sea visit me in my room without drenching my sheets. The window is but small, but when I dream, trees come through, enter inside, and the mountains, and the moon. Only in my dreams do I crawl into a grain of sand and sleep on a traveling cloud.

I grow to be everywhere and shrink to see how enormous the world is. I walk through my dreams with yesterday in the one hand and tomorrow in the other. ‘So long yesterday, hello tomorrow.’ And if I don’t know where I am I dream so I can wake up in today. Because I live in my dreams and dream in my life.
