Annewieke Baank North, south, east and west My name is Annewieke Baank. I was born 31 years ago in Uithuizen, a small town in the northernmost part of the Netherlands. I studied International Business at the Maastricht University, because I was interested in a different culture and I wanted to move to a place where I was going to meet new people. During my study, I focused on small and medium sized enterprises and regional development. In my first job, I worked as a business consultant for small companies in Enschede. After this, I started working with the Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Hague, where I advised companies and trade organisations regarding innovation projects and subsidies. Since May 2011, I work for Holland Marine Equipment in Rotterdam where I am the project manager for the Proeftuin Maritieme Innovatie (or pilot project maritime innovation). Proefuin Maritieme Innovatie The ‘Proeftuin Maritieme Innovatie’ is a large EU-funded project where three trade organisations and four educational institutions (Hogeschool Rotterdam, STCgroup, InHolland cooperate in order to bring the maritime industry and education closer together. The project tries to narrow the gap between companies and education and hopes to make more students enthusiastic for the maritime sector. Also, the project wants to motivate companies to invest in young people by offering them interesting internships or minor & graduation projects.
Working together The partners in the Proeftuin organise together various events to bring companies and students closer, such as: speeddates between students and companies, student projects at companies, a design contest, or speed solving sessions where students with varying backgrounds answer companies’ innovation dilemmas. I enjoy working for the Proeftuin a lot because, on the one hand, it is challenging to link all partners together and motivate various organisations to cooperate. On the other hand, it is greatly rewarding to see a group of highly motivated students find an interesting company to prepare themselves for an exciting job in the maritime industry.
Andrey Golovanov Hi! My name is Andrey Golovanov. I am a 28 year old QA employee of the well known and sector leading Dutch shipping company Feederlines B.V., which is part of the Hartmann Group. I was born in Kaliningrad, Russia, where I grew up. Kaliningrad is the most western part of Russia with access to the Baltic Sea. It has a few sea ports on the coast, with fishing, cargo, shipyards, oil terminals and other facilities. Therefore it is quite obvious that the majority of the male population is working in companies which are related to shipping business. My choice for my future occupation was easy to decide; the previous generations in my family were mostly seamen. My father is a Captain, my uncle is pilot, and another one is Captain as well. I graduated from the Baltic State Academy where I have been studying for 6 years to become a navigator/ engineer. My seagoing carrier however was quite short. I was invited to a shore based shipping company where my valuable experience in ship's operation, crew planning and ism basics was well received. At a certain moment I started looking for further carrier opportunities and a more extended field for my knowledge. This is how I came across Feederlines B.V. I am working for this company for almost two years now. The city of Groningen is my new home which I find beautiful. There were many immigration formalities for me to overpass before I could move, but thanks to Feederlines I succeeded.
The job I have been given by Feederlines is related to the base of all shipping companies; it is ISM and ISPS compliance. Together with my professional colleagues and especially my colleagues from the QA department we are developing a safety system. It is our challenge and day-to-day goal to be on the highest safety level at all times both at the office and on board of our fleet of 50 vessels. The compliance with the latest International regulations, National regulations and our own policy is a difficult but exiting job. We are managing it well. Our non-detained vessels trading world wide are the best proof of this. To keep people motivated and well trained, I have to travel a lot for Internal Audits. Direct contact with the crew on board is one of the most interesting parts of my job.
I find cooperation with PSC inspectors and Class representatives and other external parties important and very interesting as well. I was busy with organizing a ballast water plan compliance for the fleet a short time ago. This important issue for keeping our planet clean is not yet rectified by the members but will come in to force in the near future. Some other tasks are the Company Internal Audits and marine claim investigations. My personal aim is to be proactive on modern shipping challenges in line with our company policy. In 2011 I had been appointed by the Management to lead an implementation project of a new planned maintenance system. We have realized a transparent work flow for planned maintenance, documented procedures, a well kept quality documentation, crew management and order management that together - increase the efficiency of the system; - save time for crew and office; - reduce expenses and - help to focus on major tasks. This was all possible due to the high quality software from Germanischer Lloyd, that was successfully implemented in the end of 2011 together with my team. There are many things left to improve in this regard, but I am proud of the positive results, visible via both the office colleagues and crew feedback and interest.
Last years were not the easiest ones for the world economy and for shipping in particular. However this very important driving force of the world economy has faced depressions before and has always recovered. I am confident that the same will occur soon. The world trade has always been supported by shipping, because it is innovating and progressive. Therefore I have set my mind to dedicate myself to this utmost interesting job. I am planning to expand my knowledge with some theoretical and practical MBA studies in shipping management this year. In my country people use to say - “knowledge is power". This is the motto I am planning to use to benefit for my carrier and the company. The difficult part is to find a university that lives up to my expectations. Good luck to all the readers. Steer the right course in your life. Best regards, Andrey Golovanov

Ahoy! School at Sea zeilt in volle vaart 2012 binnen! You sail. You learn. Dominica, Martinique, Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao, San Blas. School at Sea is in de Caraïben!
Dat is School at Sea. Delegeren. Communiceren. You sail. You learn

Safety alert: Fast rescue boat launching appliance ‘wave compensator’ devices Applicabilty: All owners and operators of new and existing ships IMO Resolution MSC.218(82) introduced requirements for new fast rescue boat launching appliances, which entered into force on July 1, 2008. One of the new requirements was that fast rescue boat launching appliances be fitted with a ‘wave compensator’ device. These are automatic high-speed tensioning devices which prevent the davit wire from going slack when launching fast rescue boats in adverse sea state conditions. In 2010 there was an incident on board a cargo ship, in which several crew members sustained serious injuries when trying to launch a fast rescue boat. The injured personnel were crewing the fast rescue boat when the launching appliance wave compensator device caused the boat to descend rapidly and hit the water, from a height of approximately 18 metres. The accident was investigated and found to be caused by faulty installation of the wave compensator device. Recently, during installation testing of a fast rescue boat launching appliance, produced by a different manufacturer, the appliance was found to have a similar problem. This problem was also found to be caused by faulty installation of the wave compensator device. What should owners and operators do now? Owners and operators of ships should check if their vessels are fitted with fast rescue boat launching appliances equipped with a wave compensator device. If so, owners should liaise with the manufacturer of the launching appliance and agree a suitable test procedure, to ensure proper operation of the appliance.

Geuzen Geuzen (French: Les Gueux, English: the Beggars) was a name assumed by the confederacy of Calvinist Dutch nobles and other malcontents, who from 1566 opposed Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The most successful group of them operated at sea, and so were called Watergeuzen (French: Gueux de mer, English: Sea Beggars). In the Eighty Years' War, the Capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen in 1572 provided the first foothold on land for the rebels, who would conquer the northern Netherlands and establish an independent Dutch Republic. They can be considered either as privateers or pirates, depending on the circumstances or motivations. Origin of the name The leaders of the nobles, who signed a solemn league known as the Compromise of Nobles, by which they bound themselves to assist in defending the rights and liberties of the Netherlands against the civil and religious despotism of Philip II of Spain were Louis, Count of Nassau, and Henry, Count of Bréderode. On April 5, 1566 permission was obtained for the confederates to present a petition of grievances, called the Request, to the regent, Margaret, Duchess of Parma. About 250 nobles marched to the palace accompanied by Louis of Nassau and Bréderode. The regent was at first alarmed at the appearance of so large a body, but one of her councillors, Berlaymont, was heard to exclaim, "What, madam, is your highness afraid of these beggars (ces gueux)?"
Traditional emblem of the Geuzen. The appellation was not forgotten. At a great feast held by some 300 confederates at the Hotel Culemburg three days later, Bréderode in a speech declared that if need be they were all ready to become beggars in their country's cause. The name became henceforward a party title. The patriot party adopted the emblems of beggarhood, the wallet and the bowl, as trinkets to be worn on their hats or their girdles, and a medal was struck having on one side the head of Philip II, on the other two clasped hands with the motto Fidèle au roy, jusqu'à porter la besace ("Loyal to the King, till carrying the beggar's pouch"). The original league of Beggars was short-lived, crushed by Alva, but its principles survived and were to be ultimately triumphant. In the Dutch language the word geuzennaam is used for linguistic reappropriation: a pejorative term used with pride by the people called that way.
Sea Beggars
William II de la Marck (1542-1578), a leader of the Sea Beggars. In 1569 William of Orange, who had now openly placed himself at the head of the party of revolt, granted letters of marque to a number of vessels manned by crews of desperadoes drawn from all nationalities. Eighteen ships received letters of marque, which were equipped by Louis of Nassau in the French Huguenot port of La Rochelle, which they continued to use as a base. By the end of 1569, already 84 Sea Beggars ships were in action.
Capture of Brielle, 1 April 1572 (Frans Hogenberg). These fierce privateers under the command of a succession of daring and reckless leaders, the bestknown of whom is William de la Marck, Lord of Lumey, were called "Sea Beggars", "Gueux de mer" in French, or "Watergeuzen" in Dutch. At first they were content to merely plunder both by sea and land, and carrying their booty to the English ports where they were able to refit and replenish their stores. However, in 1572, Queen Elizabeth I of England abruptly refused to admit the Sea Beggars to her harbours. No longer having refuge, they made a desperate attack upon Brielle, which they seized by surprise in the absence of the Spanish garrison on April 1, 1572. Encouraged by this surprising success, they now sailed to Flushing, which was also taken by a coup de main. The capture of these two towns prompted several nearby towns to declare for revolt, starting a chain reaction that resulted in the majority of Holland joining in a general revolt of the Netherlands, and is regarded as the real beginning of Dutch independence.
In 1573 the Sea Beggars defeated a Spanish squadron under the command of Admiral Bossu off the port of Hoorn in the Battle on the Zuiderzee. Mixing with the native population, they quickly sparked rebellions against "the Iron Duke" in town after town and spread the resistance southward. Some of the forefathers of the great Dutch naval heroes began their naval careers as Sea Beggars, such as Evert Heindricxzen, the grandfather of Cornelis Evertsen the Elder. Many Geuzen medals were awarded. Geuzen symbolics and the Ottoman Empire
Geuzen medal, cast silver, tooled, about 1570, with the slogans LIVER TVRCX DAN PAVS ("Rather Turkish than Papist") and EN DESPIT DE LA MES ("In spite of the Mass"). The Sea Beggars used symbolics associated with the Ottoman Empire. William I of Orange sought Ottoman assistance against the Spanish king Philip II. Dutch Ships Ramming Spanish Galleys off the Flemish Coast in October 1602, 1617, oil on canvas by Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom and Cornelis Vroom The "Geuzen" were expressing their anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic sentiments. They considered the Turks to be less threatening than the Spaniards. During the years between 1579 and 1582, representatives from Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Paşa travelled several times from Istanbul to Antwerp. The slogan Liever Turks dan Paaps seems to have been largely rhetorical however, and their beggars medals in the form of a half moon were symbolically meant. The Dutch hardly contemplated life under the Sultan at all. Moreover, there was no direct contact between the Geuzen and the Turkish authorities. Ultimately, the Turks were infidels, and the heresy of Islam alone disqualified them from assuming a more central (or consistent) role in the rebels' program of propaganda.
