“Promoting Young Potentials” For all those who feel passionate about the maritime sector, Welcome to the new edition of YMI! Young Maritime International is a new magazine that aims to provide youth in the maritime sector with the opportunity to publish their projects, innovative ideas, and graduation projects. Each edition will contain several projects of students worldwide. Two other topics that will be touched upon in the magazine are "From a legal point of view" and "History". The magazine is meant for youth and students in the maritime sector, maritime businesses, educational institutes, business schools, governmental institutes, and other interested parties. The Human Factor Education is one of the backbones of our Shipping, Transport and Process industry as it provides youngsters with the knowledge, understanding and proficiency they need to perform their jobs at the highest level of quality. Education provides the industry with highly qualified staff, which is needed in the rapidly changing and globalising world. Since the importance of the human factor for the maritime cluster is underlined by the IMO as well as the European Commission, the fact that the Dutch Government is dramatically cutting down on expenses for education at the moment, seems incomprehensible. The IMO states that “the safety and security of life at sea, protection of the marine environment and over 90% of the world's trade depends on the professionalism and competence of seafarers”. The European Commission underlines the importance of the human factor in its recently published White Paper 2011 “Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area - Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system”, that human resources are a crucial component of any high quality transport system. Besides, it is also widely known that labour and skill shortages will become a serious concern for transport in the future. The importance of the maritime cluster for not only the Dutch GDP but even the worldwide GDP, should form a solid basis in combination with the aforementioned for a continuation of all activities we undertake daily to support the maritime cluster with highly qualifified workers. As the maritime cluster is an international cluster, the STC-Group provides both their students and employees the possibility to encounter international aspects during their education and careers. International skills are not only needed for their future jobs, but are especially needed for jobs in the international environments of the Shipping, Transport and Process industry. The European Commission is already offering
funds for international traineeships for more than 15 years. At the moment, the negotiations for the next period of seven years, from 2014 till 2020 are on-going. And here again, although the European Commission is underlining the importance of the human factor for the maritime cluster, vocational education and training seems to be lacking in all policy documents. Writing this column whilst negotiations within the Netherlands concerning a cut down of expenses of a minimum of 9 Billion Euros are ongoing, is a challenging one. Working for one of the biggest educational, training as well as knowledge centres for the maritime cluster worldwide, provides an uncertain situation. Not only, for the institutes, the persons working for the institutes, the pupils and students, but as well as for the maritime cluster as a whole. Hopefully, the policy makers will become aware of the importance of the cluster we are all working for, and we are all very proud of. Jaap Gebraad studied Logistics and Economics at the HES in Rotterdam. After his graduation he started working as a forwarding agent, for a period of four years. In 2008 he started at the STCGroup (www.stcgroup.nl) as a Jr. Project Manager. The first year was a traineeship, during which he was able to work at various departments of the STCGroup. Currently, he is a Project Manager with as core task internationalisation within the EU for the public part of the STC-Group. Besides, he is the daily secretariat of EDINNA (Education in Inland Navigation) and studying for his Master’s Degree in Shipping and Transport at the Netherlands Maritime University.

KNVTS The KNVTS, in Dutch the abbreviations for `Royal Dutch Association of Technicians in the Shipping industry', are committed to stimulating technological developments within the maritime industry. The association is keen to promote this knowledge especially with maritime students of all different types and levels of education. To achieve this, the KNVTS organises various (network) meetings, presentations and excursions at regular intervals. In association with foundation ‘de Zee’, the KNVTS form the editorial staff of the magazine ‘SWZ Maritime’. This is the voice of the association in which authoritative articles and announcements are published. At the beginning of a maritime career (especially while following a maritime education), KNVTS offer a useful platform to interact with fellow maritime professionals of various companies within the industry. The KNVTS maintain good links with the various student associations of the maritime institutes and regularly organise joint presentations and seminars together with student association ´William Froude´. The association also aims to stimulate maritime studies and student interest by means granting two types of Maritime Student Awards: a graduation and an achievement award. After a period of recession, we have recently seen a growing trend for young technicians of both MBO and HBO/WO level. Fortunately this has lead to a resurgence of maritime studies and a renewed growth of academies and universities. The KNVTS is pleased to see that there is an increasing interest amongst students to a role at local level within the KNVTS. Following on in the footsteps of the Northern branch of the KNVTS, the Zeeland branch welcomes a maritime student to a permanent position on the local board. It is KNVTS policy to involve young starters and students in affairs of the association. The KNVTS realise that growth and development is of the utmost importance to the association and this will only be achieved by engaging with the young and exploiting the very latest in communication trends. An example of which is our new interactive website and we welcome you to visit us at: www.knvts.nl
Statutory Alert: MARPOL Annex VI – a reminder of the entry into effect of the North American ECA-SOx Applicabilty: All shipowners and operators The North American Emission Control Area for SOx and particulate matter (ECA-SOx) enters into effect on 1 August, 2012. From this date, the same requirements will apply as for the existing Baltic and North Sea ECASOx, including the requirements for recording data on entry and exit. The North American ECA-SOx covers three distinct areas: 1.
off the North American Atlantic/Gulf coasts;
2.
off the North American Pacific coast; and
3.
around certain parts of Hawaii.
It also includes the St Lawrence Seaway, the Great Lakes and rivers (such as the Mississippi) which are accessed by shipping. The ECA’s exact co-ordinates are contained in the IMO Circular MEPC.1/Circ.723, available here Ships operating in or entering the North American ECA-SOx on or after 1 August, 2012, will need to have on board sufficient compliant fuel oil (1.00% m/m maximum sulphur content) and bring it into use as required. Ships entering the ECA-SOx before this date will need to ensure that compliant fuel oil is brought into use no later than 00:00 hrs on 1 August, 2012. Lloyd’s Register recommends that this fuel change-over is recorded in the same way as if the ship was entering an ECA.

Ahoy! School at Sea komt naar huis! You Sail. You Learn.
Ook geïnteresseerd in School at Sea? School at Sea. You Sail. You Learn.
