Message from the President Once in a while it is my job to call members’ attention to the passing of a major figure in the field. So it is now with František Daneš, who has left us at the age of 95. For anyone interested in the field of Czech language culture and linguistics, Daneš was a central figure. His career bears the marks of the history of his times. He was forced to discontinue his studies when the Czech universities were closed at the outbreak of the second world war, and later resumed them, training under the Prague School’s founding members. He wrote his doctorate under Bohumil Havránek (on intonation) and cited Mathesius, Trnka and Šmilauer as his other great influences (Bakărdžieva 2013: 229). Through a distinguished career at the Czech Language Institute of the Academy of Sciences, he served twice as its director: in 1965–1970, and then again at the end of the “normalization” era in 1990–1994. His academic career shows the same trajectory: granted the title of docent in 1962, he finally received the rank of profesor in 1992 (Loucká 1999). Daneš considered his approach to draw fundamentally on the Prague School’s tenets. Describing his theoretical approach, he said: “I’m a structuralist in the sense that I investigate competence (a set of linguistic skills and abilities) in performance (discourse) and in the process look of course for various structural relationships” (Bakărdžieva 2013: 231). The body of work Daneš has left us is broad and yet clearly focused. In his view, his greatest contributions were to Functional Sentence Perspective in delimiting the concept of thematic succession in a text; the concepts of sentence formulae and center/periphery/transition; and sociolinguistic aspects of the development of the standard language, specifically attitudes toward language and the processes of standardization (Bakărdžieva 2013: 230). To see how far-thinking Daneš was, we need only consider the influence that FSP has had on all manner of theories about syntax and discourse since, and the fact that the concepts of centre vs. periphery he elaborated in the 1960s have much in common with the cognitive notions of prototype and radial categories. (The fact that Daneš brought these insights early on can explain his later skepticism about “new” theories that, as Laura Janda has pointed out, build on insights of the Prague School to which Daneš contributed so much.) His own assessment characteristically understates his contribution to language culture. Daneš was not just a scholar of language culture, but was fundamentally involved in orthographic reforms from the 1950s onward, and had an active public presence, contributing regularly to language columns in a variety of publications. With him passes yet another of the committed and brilliant linguists who made Czech linguistics a force to be reckoned with throughout the twentieth century. Bakărdžieva, Ginka. 2013. “Europe without borders”, “Migration to Europe” and “Where is my home?”), the results were extremely impressive. The students offered visual commentaries that were intelligent, provocative, and showed a great sense of humor; the posters opened the public space to launch debates on these topics. Most importantly, the posters revealed openness of young Czechs towards others from diverse nations, languages and cultures.

anguage conveys attitudes of and towards the speakers, social networks and ideologies of the communities. Communication, however, occurs not purely by means of language. A combination of verbal and visual representation, such as public signs and posters, communicates intuitively and persuasively with those who inhabit or visit the communities and spaces, defines and challenges them, questions the official discourse, confronts standard ideologies, spreads propaganda, protests political regimes, offers opinions and provides arguments. Seemingly silent, passed by and often no more than passively encountered, signs and posters can challenge our beliefs and biases. One may ask how the poster is faring in our current environment: we are called to process a constant stream of information through diverse channels and to respond to it almost instantly; novelty and emotional impact often surpass the information value. Is poster then a dead medium nowadays? I would argue otherwise. Posters, in as much as they can convey a powerful visual input in addition to verbal input, have become a highly effective means of communication. Poster is a visual imprint of its time, a barometer of moods, feelings and the social atmosphere at a given moment. Posters are usually placed in busy locations where they could capture public attention while targeting no particular audience. Admittedly, traditional poster billboards, which used to be a prominent domain of communication in the 1960s, are quickly disappearing from cities, but they are instead replaced by huge billboards by the highway as a powerful means of communication. The younger generation of Czechs is perhaps intuitively aware of the power of this medium. When the Czech Council for Foreign Relations issued a call to students of the arts to compete for an award for the best poster on European identity (“European identity”,
“Migration in Europe”, by Š. Čepeláková, Plzeň
The messages on students’ posters can be divided into two main groups. First, those that approve of linguistic diversity and perceive it as a contribution to enhancing new opportunities to communicate and to presenting the Czech space as a space to share experiences of those from other nations who bring in new ideas and cultural habits. In contrast, some students respond to the pressures of local social concerns and to foreign influences, and depict the Czech society as a fortress that must be protected as it was up to 1989 when Czech dominated the space and foreign languages appeared “exotic”. In another poster arms hold up a wall representing borders around the Czech Republic with all the strength as if to retain the current order. The poster expresses fears of a globalized world that ushers in new radical ideas, and shows the Czech Republic as a space that will not let anyone in, especially if they speak a

foreign language. Using the colors of black and white conveys caution and tension.
“Europe Without Barriers”, by T. Skřivanová, Faculty of Applied Design, Ústí nad Labem
In another poster the author’s homeland became an opened space awaiting outside stimuli, accepting new arrivals, including immigrants and their languages. The space has expanded for anyone wishing to travel and speak foreign languages without any inhibition. The colors reinforce this positive message and evoke EU symbols.

Another design juxtaposes stylized figures and expresses equality on the basis of color, gender, and nationality. The figures holding hands are of the same size and proportions, differing only in color, and together they create an interesting mosaic of people. The message is that in the area of Europe, including the Czech Republic, there is a place for everyone regardless of their origin and language.
“European identity”, by T. Melenová, Faculty of Applied Design, Ústí nad Labem
Almost 80% of the posters include words, phrases, and short sentences. The choice of font and graphics jointly yield a print medium that underpins the importance of communication and serves to create a unique linguistic landscape. To express diversity and welcome multilingualism students play with languages represented by diverse lettering. But others convey a fear of languages. To express the cohabitation of nations and languages, cooperation and equality of status, an author selected unique graphemes from various European languages and assembled a text that is understandable to all, thereby expressing European identity as a unity that preserves diversity.
“Europe Without Barriers”, by L. Zapletalová, Faculty of Applied Design, Ústí nad Labem
In yet another depiction people are seen floating in space without obstacles, barriers and boundaries, linguistic or spatial. In the euphoria that freedom of movement brings, people fail to recognize the challenges of an open space. The danger is expressed by spines placed on the

vitality (in contrast to a poster where the use of yellow and black represent warning).

Another poster draws attention to possible changes in the near future and displays concern about the influence of Chinese culture and language through the use of the English and Czech word “migration/migrace” dispalyed in Latin and Chinese characters and proposing a gesture of what’s to be expected in the Czech Republic and Europe in the future.
The phrase “Europe without barriers” translated into all European languages creates a Babylon of languages where colored lines guide the viewer out from the apparent chaos by interconnecting words and phrases. The word “Europe” is similar across all the languages, which shows that all in Europe have Europe in common.

Joy predominates in a poster that plays with text bubbles of comic strips that contain the words “ahoj” and “hi” and refer to the perception of English as a second language of communication among young people. Greetings in English and Czech personify both languages and illustrate the idea that if languages can talk to each other, so can the speakers. Bright colors play an important role here and are associated with youth and
Sentences can be gathered into a highly relevant symbol where words are organized to visualize the shape of a house and create a symbol of one’s home that is not just an ordinary house but one built out of speaking words that capture an ordinary family life scene. A mother asks, "So, how did it go in school today?" And the daughter replies, "Ok, as usual." "Have you eaten anything?" "Well, I bought myself a cookie." The text runs on like in
4
a peaceful home setting. The artist color-coded the speakers and thus integrated content with the visual message that surpasses both modes of communication.
“Europe Without Barriers”, České Budějovice, 2009
After the Velvet revolution citizen engagement in Czech civil society has gradually petered out. Public affairs became irrelevant once again, opinions ceased to be voiced, people had once again turned inward and withdrew from public life into the safety zone of privacy. Today, we might even get the impression that the younger generation is growing passive. The posters serve as evidence that such an impression is incorrect. Posters show young people’s reaction to various topics of migration, foreigness communities spaces, boundaries and globalization. They offer a remarkable medium to deal creatively with these topics. The issues – especially their emotional reactions to them - are not easy to explain only with words but posters combining the visual and verbal communication mediate the meanings successfully. This language of art and Czech cultural concepts yield new meanings via metaphors and meaning shifts that occur when familiar concepts are placed in unexpected contexts. This, too, is a way to respond to the surrounding reality.
“Where is My Country?”, by V. Šišková, Graphic design, FMK UTB Zlín
Drulák (2005, the Institute of International Relations) commented on the “European Identity” project: "The posters created space for an aesthetic understanding of European identity, which makes it even more radical because it does not rely on language as the usual marker of identity but on images.” What do students’ posters say about European identity? How can one relate rational and aesthetic aspects of European identity so that they blend in a coherent way, enrich each other and offer a metaphor of what Europe means? The metaphors link two areas of experience so that the viewers could apply what they know about one region to another region. They function as a special kind of abstract discourse in which we can understand and describe the world, rationally or aesthetically, which cannot be done without the metaphors. Analyses of rational attempts to understand the European Union have showed that the bulk of current scholarly and political debate on European integration can be captured by the metaphors of movement, container and balance (Drulák & Karlas 2005, Drulák 2004), and most of the posters can be understood through these metaphors as well. The posters develop and process them in unconventional ways and update conventional understandings of Europe.

Česky s obrázky představuje zásobník kreseb a doprovodných textů včetně cvičení, her a dalších aktivit.

V rámci ZOPAKUJTE SI A OPAKOVÁNÍ DEKLINACE A KONJUGACE nejsou zařazená pouze cvičení, ale rovněž upozornění (oddíly POZOR!) a stručné výkladové tabulky.
Vedle toho učebnice obsahuje i řadu jiných cvičení, včetně her s pravidly, křížovek, doplňovaček, diskusí. Zkušení by pak viděli přesný záměr 9

Zmiňované úrovni odpovídá i volba lexika. Horní navigace (lišta v horní části levé strany označující gramatický okruh, jehož se daná aktivita týká) přispívá k dobré orientaci v publikaci a poskytuje vyučujícímu možnost zvolit činnost dle momentální potřeby.

Mgr.
