Information The written exam is 180 minutes long. The exam sheet contains a short film extract on DVD. At the beginning of the exam, candidates watch the film or programme extract that goes with the question sheet. After the question sheets have been handed out, candidates have three minutes to study the questions. Candidates watch the extract again, then start working on the question sheet. Candidates may watch the extract again (for a third time) if so required by anyone. This will take place at the beginning of the last 30 minutes before they hand in the worksheet. Candidates may only use the question sheets. No other help is allowed. The written exam question sheet consists of three sections: - Questions testing knowledge and facts. This part carries a maximum 20% of the total; - Questions testing the comprehension of moving image on the basis of the extract shown. This part carries a maximum 50% of the total. - Question testing the ability to define and analyse problems concerning mass media. This part carries a maximum 30% of the total. The parts in bold help the candidate to focus on what the task requires of them.

MEDIA MINI ESSAY (maximum 15 points) 12. a) Read the following text carefully. It summarises some important statements in Umberto Eco’s study: Transparenza perduta (Már nem átlátszó a képernyő), which is about neotelevision (Eco’s expression) following the (original) concept of television before the 1980s.
The purpose of neo-television is to achieve the greatest number of viewers, to arouse constant attention. For this reason it rejects the traditional, static structure of programmes in which the different programme genres follow each other. Instead, it creates a dynamic, spectacular, fastflowing stream of programmes where programmes are connected like a chain. In order to catch viewers’ attention, television constantly entertains, even in traditionally not entertaining genres. The former national newscast monopoly worldwide disappears. Private affairs are given more importance. Editorial practice prefers creating turns, opposing pictures and opinions, shocking and amazing viewers. The relationship between communicator and viewer becomes visible: the process of mass media becomes interactive. Neo-television prefers subjective themes, has an informal tone, is vision-centred and fast, offers a variety of genres, and opens a new chapter in the history of television. The medium, which reproduced other cultural forms for decades (cinema, theatre, radio), “fills up”: it becomes an independent cultural form with its specific television programmes.
Based on the text above and the film extract, describe the traditional (i.e. not neo but original) television in Hungary in the 1970s according to the following aspects: -
purpose of television and its functions; model of television; monitoring of television operation; structure of television programmes, dominant faces; relationship between television and viewer; live broadcast in the television of the period; the tone of voice used in television.
Justify your answer using details based on the story elements of the film and the appropriate parts of the above text. (7 points) b) Write a short comparative analytical essay entitled “Prohászka and the Real Life Heroes”, in which you compare the purpose and the way of presenting civilians as television characters in the media of the period and today. Identify similarities and differences. (8 points)
