Ez az erősen adalékolt germánium p-n átmenetében létrehozott alagúteffektusról szólt. Ezek az eredmények alapozták meg az „alagútdióda” létrejöttét. A megosztott Nobel díjat:

The light absorption and emission, the two-lewel system Bohr-model: In the process of spontaneous emission an electron "spontaneously” (i.e. without any outside influence) decays from a higher energy level to a lower one.
absorption Absorption is the process by which a photon is absorbed by the atom, causing an electron to jump from a lower energy level to a higher one.

The laser 2.
The detailed investigation has shown, that in the stimulated emission the induced photon has the same frequency and phase as the incident photon. The population inversion is required for laser operation, but it cannot be achieved by the group of atoms with two energy-levels when they are in thermal equilibrium. To achieve non-equilibrium conditions, an indirect method of populating the excited state must be used.

The laser 4. ”The Nobel Prize for physics is in 1964. given for the invention of the maser and the laser. Maser stands for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, and the word laser is obtained by replacing microwave by light.” (The Nobel-prize winners: N. G. Basov, A. Prokhorov, C.
