content • presentation (English) master programme • presentation Erasmus Mundus programma EURHEO
rationale • chemical industry y in Belgium g is big g • mainly consists of multinationals (ExxonMobil, BASF, Bayer, y TOTAL, Monsanto, Borealis, Evonik, ...)) • chemical engineers work in an international environment • integration of foreign students (with conservation of quality, EURHEO, Erasmus-programmes) • upcoming exchange programmes with Université de Montréal, Univerisity of Delaware, Université de Nancy • internationalisation is ‘the’ trend for the next coming years
rationale • focus to recruit European students with bachelor degree from other universities of good standards • unique q aspects p of chemical engineering g g research in Leuven with respect to other European programmes → process intensification → chemical product design → microbial process technology → exergy route t to t sustainable t i bl chemistry h i t

current trends in chemical engineering • unique courses offered in Leuven (research based education) → process intensification in the chemical industries (3 ECTS) → chemical product design (3 ECTS) → microbial process technology (3 ECTS) → exergy route towards sustainable chemistry (3 ECTS)
• students take 3 out of this 4 courses • 4th course can eventually be chosen within the option
content options (9 ECTS compulsory, 6 ECTS choice) •
process engineering p g g → advanced process control in the (bio-)chemical industries → powder technology → waste t water t treatment t t t technology t h l
•
product engineering → applied rheology for product engineering → polymer processing → design and analysis of polymeric systems
•
planet engineering → water technology → recycling and energetic valorization of reststreams → air pollution and control
master thesis + GEC • within option: 6 ECTS choice (can be one of the other courses, internships, other potentially interesting courses) • master thesis not necessarily connected with option choice (24 ECTS) • GEC as before → possibility to do Athens exchange → language class (e.g. Engels in de bedrijfsomgeving) → total quality management → innovation management g and strategy gy → industry and environment → ...
conclusion • chemical engineering in Leuven... → a solid engineering education → a modern d chemical h i l engineering i i education d ti → an internationally oriented education → a strongly research based education → strongly linked with the important chemical industry
EURHEO • prestigeous Erasmus Mundus programme • ‘Engineering ‘E i i Rh Rheology’ l ’ • importance of rheology in a scientifically based product f formulation l ti ((polymers, l cosmetics, ti paints, i t ffood d applications, ...) • participating universities (double degree) → K.U. Leuven (Belgium) → U.C. Louvain Louvain-la-Neuve la Neuve (Belgium) → Universidade do Minho (Portugal) → Universidad de Huelva (Spain) → Università degli studi della Calabria (Italy) → Univerza Ljubljana (Slovenia)
• scholarships h l hi available, il bl also l ffor EU citizins iti i
EURHEO • master programme (120 ECTS)
EURHEO • year 1: regular curriculum in host university • year 2, first semester: common branch modules taught g in Universidade do Minho ((Portugal) g ) • students choose 3 out of 4 common branch modules → material ate a sc science e ce (5 ECTS) C S) → experimental techniques (5 ECTS) → constitutive modelling and computational rheology (5 ECTS) → rheology in material science (5 ECTS)
• year 2 2, second semester: other university than year 1 → master thesis project (30 ECTS) → 15 ECTS Advanced Topical Modules (e (e-learning learning over internet)
