Maxwell’s equations
Maxwell’s equations
Analysis of antennas and circuits, which are going to be designed for frequency band of centimeter waves, has to be based on Maxwell’s equations since wavelength is comparable with the dimensions of the component (an antenna, for example) in this band. We therefore cannot assume a constant distribution of current on the whole surface of the antenna, and we have to consecutively add up (integrate) values of current on partial segments of the antenna.
2.1 Integral formulation The first two Maxwell’s equations describe a successive transformation of an electric field to a magnetic one and vice versa. These successive transformations of fields result in propagation of an electromagnetic wave in an environment away from sources. Ampère’s circuital law describes the transformation of an electric field to a magnetic one. If a thin wire is flown by a conductive current i (electrons in motion) and a displacement current d/dt (harmonic variation of polarization of dielectrics in a capacitor caused by a harmonic voltage on electrodes), rings of magnetic lines of force are excited around this wire

Maxwellovy rovnice
2.1 Integrální formulace První dvě Maxwellovy rovnice popisují postupné přelévání energie elektrického pole do pole magnetického a naopak. Přelévání energie elektrického pole do pole magnetického popisuje Ampérův zákon celkového proudu. Teče-li tenkým drátem vodivý proud i (elektrony v pohybu) a posuvný proud d/dt (harmonická změna polarizace dielektrika kondenzátoru po přiložení harmonického napětí na elektrody), vzniknou kolem tohoto drátu prstencové siločáry magnetického pole

The integral formulation of Maxwell’s equations clearly explains physical fundamentals of related phenomena. On the other hand, solution of Maxwell’s equations in the integral form is demanding. For this reason, Maxwell’s equations are expressed in form of differential equations which can be numerically solved.
2.2 Differential formulation Integral formulation of Maxwell’s equations helps us to explain principles of fundamental electromagnetic phenomena. Exploitation of the integral formulation is rather complicated for practical computations, and therefore, Maxwell’s equations should be rewritten to the differential form: D t B E t

Obr. 2.2 a) Michael Faraday; převzato z http://en.wikipedia.org. b) Faradayův indukční zákon.

Maxwell’s equations
The symbol denotes the differential operator, which can be represented in the Cartesian coordinate system by the following vector:
x
y
z
(2.14)
Maxwell’s equations in the differential form can be understandably explained if derivatives are replaced by differences.
Fig. 2.3 Approximation of derivatives by differences. Derivative of a function in point x0 can be understood as a direction of the tangent of the function in this point (blue line in fig. 2.3). Fig. 2.3 shows that the tangent is parallel to the hypotenuse of the rectangular triangle (red lines in fig. 2.3), which is created by the h/2 shift towards higher values, and by the h/2shift towards lower values. The direction of the tangent can be therefore approximated by the direction of the hypotenuse. The direction of the hypotenuse equals to the ratio of the opposite side of the triangle and the adjacent one h h f x0 f x0 df x0 2 2 f x0 f x0 dx h h
(2.15)
Accuracy of the approximation of the derivative is higher as the length of the shift h is lower f x0 lim h0
f x0 h
Dividing by a small value of h, an error of the numerical solution is significantly increased. Therefore, a compromise between demands has to be found. A proper value of h can be verified experimentally: if the value of the difference stays stable for ten-times higher h and ten-times lower h, the value of h can be accepted as appropriate. The numerator of (2.15) contains the difference of functional values in two neighboring points. If the functional value does not change, the difference equals zero. The derivative therefore expresses the measure of a change also: a high value of the derivative indicates a sharp change of the functional value. In order to explain the second Maxwell’s equation, the vector expression is decomposed to the coordinate components:

(2.14)
Maxwellovým rovnicím v diferenciálním tvaru snáze porozumíme, nahradíme-li derivace diferencemi.
Obr. 2.3 Náhrada derivace diferencí. Derivaci funkce v bodě x0 lze interpretovat jako směrnici tečny k funkci v tomto bodě (modrá čára v obr. 2.3).

Maxwell’s equations
x0 E x Ex
y0 y Ey
z0 Hx Hy z t Hz Ez
(2.16)
Since the symbols x0, y0, and z0 denote unitary vectors in directions of coordinate axes, (2.16) can be rewritten to three scalar equations H x E z E y (2.17a) y z t
H y E x E z z x t E y E x H z x y t
(2.17b) (2.17c)
Equation (2.17c) shows that the component Hz of magnetic field intensity is proportional to the variation of the vertical component Ey of electric field intensity in the horizontal direction x and the variation of the horizontal components Ex of electric field intensity in the vertical direction y. A graphical interpretation of these dependencies (Fig. 2.4) reveals an elementary loop of electric field intensity in the xy plane. Considering Faraday’s law of induction, the loop is associated with the Hz component of magnetic field intensity, which is perpendicular to the loop. Equations (2.17a) and (2.17b) can be explained similarly. The explanation was published by Prof. Yee in the fundamental work on finite differences [2.1].
Fig. 2.4 Yee cell: graphical interpretation of second Maxwell’s equation in the differential form. Since the differential formulation of Maxwell’s equations has spatial derivatives of electricfield components and magnetic-field ones on the left-hand side, we have to evaluate integrals of these expressions in the computational area during the solution. When evaluating the definite integral, values of the computed quantity on boundaries have to be known (boundary conditions have to be defined):
Dirichlet’s boundary condition describes the fact that the component of electric field intensity, which is tangential to perfect electric conductor (PEC) is zero
10
Maxwellovy rovnice
x0 E x Ex
y0 y Ey
z0 Hx Hy z t Hz Ez
(2.16)
Obdobně lze interpretovat rovnice (2.17a) a (2.17b).

(2.19)
Neumann‘s boundary condition indicates that the component of the magnetic field intensity H [A/m], which is tangential to the perfect electric conductor (PEC), does not change in the direction of a normal to the surface
H t H t n 0 on PEC n
(2.20)
The derivative of Ht with respect to the normal is therefore equal to zero and is also equal to the dot product of the normal and a gradient Ht to the conductive surface n. To better understand Neumann’s boundary condition, take a look at Fig. 2.5. In this figure, the back wall and the right wall of a rectangular waveguide are in grey color. Rectangular waveguide walls are perfect electric conductors. The electromagnetic wave propagates from the z direction (i.e. upwards). The spatial distribution of the longitudinal component of the magnetic field intensity Hz is shown in colors. This component is tangential to all four waveguide walls. The magnitude of the magnetic field intensity Ht does not change when perpendicularly moving towards the back wall (i.e. in the direction of y). The derivative of Ht in the direction of the normal towards the wall xz is therefore equal to zero. When perpendicularly moving towards the right wall (i.e. in the direction of x) we approach the maximum of the harmonic function. The tangent to the top is parallel in the direction of x. The magnitude of Ht does not change with an infinitely small step in the direction of x; consequently, the derivative of a function on the right wall in the direction of the normal is equal to zero as well. Thus, the Neumann boundary condition is on the walls of the waveguide fulfilled.

(2.21)
Neumann’s boundary condition is a natural condition. The numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations will show us that Neumann’s boundary condition is during the formulation of a computational algorithm automatically fulfilled. The chapter on the differential formulation of Maxwell’s equation ends with a note on the operator (so-called del or nabla). Eqn. (2.14) shows that nabla is a vector whose components are proportional to the partial derivation in the direction of coordinate axes. When the scalar function is multiplied by the nabla operator, we obtain x
y
z
(2.22)
Eqn. (2.22) expresses gradient of the function in the Cartesian coordinate system. Gradient components correspond with magnitude changes of the function in coordinate directions. Function Ht from Fig. 2.5 changes its value inside the waveguide (not on walls) only in the direction of x. Thus, the gradient indicates the direction of the steepest change of a function. Dot product of a nabla vector and the vector function B (magnetic induction vector) can be written in the Cartesian coordinate system as follows B
Bx B y Bz x y z
(2.23)
In (2.23), the divergence of a vector function B in a Cartesian coordinate system is shown. The magnitude of divergence can be described as the sum of the change of a function x-component in the direction of x plus the change of an y-component in the direction of y plus the change of a z-component in the direction of z. The dot product of a nabla operator and the vector function E gives the vector rotation. The calculation of the rotation in Cartesian coordinate system is shown in Eqn. (2.16) and its interpretation can be found in the following text.
2.3 Wave equation Assume that the electromagnetic quantities change harmonically. The time change of these quantities can be described with the rotation of phasors E(r) and H(r) in complex plane
E r, t Er exp jt
(2.24a)
H r, t Hr exp jt
(2.24b)
Phasors E(r) and H(r) carry the information about intensity amplitude r = r( x, y, z) and intensity starting phase in time t = t0. The field intensity time change is represented by the term exp( jt). This term is a complex function of a unit size and of a phase of t = (2/T) t that changes by 2 radians within the period T (Fig. 2.6).

Časovou změnu těchto veličin lze popsat otáčením fázorů E( r) a H( r) v komplexní rovině

Fázory E( r) a H( r) nesou informaci o amplitudě intenzit v bodě r = r( x, y, z) a počáteční fázi intenzit v čase t = t0. 2.6).

Maxwell’s equations
Fig. 2.6 The graphic representation of a harmonic variation of field intensity in complex plane caused by phasor rotation. Firstly, let us focus on electromagnetic plane waves propagating in a free space
Plane wave has a planar wavefront (plane with the same phase).
The wavefront is perpendicular to a direction of the wave propagation.
Both the electric field intensity vector E and the magnetic field intensity vector H are perpendicular to the direction of the wave propagation as well as to each other.
In the direction of wave propagation, the plane wave changes its phase only; the amplitude is in a lossless free space constant. Assume that the wavefront lies in a xy plane and the wave propagates in the direction of the zaxis of the Cartesian coordinate system. Considering a harmonic field source generating a wave of an angular frequency ω, instantaneous values of field intensities E(x, y, z, t) and H(x, y, z, t) will act as harmonic functions of a time exp(jt) and as harmonic functions of a spatial coordinate in the direction of propagation exp(jkz). Whereas the angular frequency expresses the phase change in time = 2 / T, the wave number is the change in phase in a length unit k = 2 /:
T represents a time period of a harmonic signal. During one period, the phase is changed by 2 rad.
λ represents a wavelength (spatial signal period). The wavelength expresses the distance in which the phase changes by 2 rad.
Therefore, the instantaneous value of the electric field intensity can be formulated as
E x, y, z, t Ex, y exp j t kz

Maxwell’s equations
The time change of a magnetic field is bound to a spatial change of the electric field
E j H
(2.27)
As the field is analyzed in an area where there is no influence of sources, it is no necessary to use the third (2.12) and the fourth (2.13) Maxwell equations to the solution. Nevertheless, the calculated magnetic field has to correspond with these equations. Since the Eqn. (2.12) and the Eqn. (2.13) describe a zero electric induction divergence D (on the condition that a spatial electric charge density equals zero) and a zero magnetic induction divergence B, divergence-free conditions are fulfilled. Owing to E and H being phasors, time derivatives in the Eqn. (2.26) and the Eqn. (2.27) can be replaced with multiplication by j, where represents the angular frequency. Vectors of both the electric and the magnetic inductions were replaced according to equations D = E and B = H. The current density J was derived from differential form of Ohm’s law
J E
(2.28)
where [S/m] represents a conductivity of an environment. Vector equations (2.26) and (2.27) can also be written in the form of six scalar equations for six unknowns Ex, Ey, Ez, Hx, Hy and Hz. To reduce the number of both equations and unknowns, the curl is applied to both sides of (2.26)
H j E
(2.29)
The left-hand side of (2.29) can be rewritten according to the identity
H H 2 H
(2.30)
Since the divergence of the magnetic induction is zero according to Maxwell’s equation
B 0 the first term on the right-hand side of (2.30) is zero also, and (2.29) can be rewritten to
2 H j E
(2.31)
Replacing the electric field curl on the right-hand side of (2.31) by the right-hand side of (2.27), we will obtain so called wave equation
2 H j j H
2H k 2 H 0
(2.32a)
where
k 2 j j
(2.33)
is the wave number. Wave equation (2.33) is a vector equation, which can be rewritten to a set of three scalar equations for three unknown Hx, Hy and Hz. Applying the curl operator to both sides of (2.27), we can similarly derive wave equation for electric field intensity

Maxwellovy rovnice
a časová změna magnetické složky pole je svázána s prostorovou změnou pole elektrického
E j H
(2.27)
Jelikož pole analyzujeme v oblasti mimo vliv zdrojů, třetí a čtvrtou Maxwellovi rovnici (2.12) a (2.13) nemusíme do řešení problému zahrnovat. Nicméně, vypočítané elektromagnetické pole musí těmto rovnicím vyhovovat. Jelikož (2.12) a (2.13) popisují nulovou divergenci vektoru elektrické indukce D (za podmínky nulové prostorové hustoty elektrického náboje ), a nulovou divergenci vektoru indukce magnetické B, mluvíme o splnění tzv. divergence-free conditions. Jelikož E a H jsou fázory, můžeme při psaní (2.26) a (2.27) nahradit časovou derivaci násobením členem j, kde značí úhlový kmitočet. Za vektory elektrické indukce a magnetické indukce jsme dosadili z materiálových vztahů D = E a B = H. Za plošnou hustotu vodivého proudu J jsme dosadili z Ohmova zákona v diferenciálním tvaru
J E
(2.28)
kde [S/m] značí měrnou vodivost prostředí. Vektorové rovnice (2.26) a (2.27) můžeme rozepsat do šesti skalárních rovnic pro šest neznámých Ex, Ey, Ez, Hx, Hy a Hz. Abychom počet rovnic a počet neznámých redukovali, aplikujeme na obě strany rovnice (2.26) operátor rotace
H j E
(2.29)
Levou stranu rovnice (2.29) můžeme rozepsat dle identity
H H 2 H
(2.30)
Jelikož dle čtvrté Maxwellovy rovnice je divergence magnetické indukce nulová
B 0 bude nulový i první člen na pravé straně rovnice (2.30) a rovnice (2.29) přejde do tvaru
2 H j E
(2.31)
2E k 2 E 0

Maxwell’s equations
If electromagnetic field meets equations (2.32), the field is of the form of propagating electromagnetic wave. Wave propagation will be discussed in following chapters.
