Maxwell’s equations

Analysis of antennas and circuits, which are going to be designed for frequency band of centimeter waves, has to be based on Maxwell’s equations since wavelength is comparable with the dimensions of the component (an antenna, for example) in this band. We therefore cannot assume a constant distribution of current on the whole surface of the antenna, and we have to consecutively add up (integrate) values of current on partial segments of the antenna.

2.1 Integral formulation The first two Maxwell’s equations describe a successive transformation of an electric field to a magnetic one and vice versa. These successive transformations of fields result in propagation of an electromagnetic wave in an environment away from sources. Ampère’s circuital law describes the transformation of an electric field to a magnetic one. If a thin wire is flown by a conductive current i (electrons in motion) and a displacement current d/dt (harmonic variation of polarization of dielectrics in a capacitor caused by a harmonic voltage on electrodes), rings of magnetic lines of force are excited around this wire

Při analýze antén a obvodů, jež pracují v pásmu centimetrových vln, je třeba vycházet z matematického popisu, založeného na Maxwellových rovnicích. Délka vlny je totiž v tomto případě srovnatelná s rozměry komponentu (například antény). Nemůžeme tedy předpokládat, že je na celé ploše antény rozložen konstantní proud, a musíme postupně sčítat (integrovat) hodnotu proudu na dílčích segmentech antény.

2.1 Integrální formulace První dvě Maxwellovy rovnice popisují postupné přelévání energie elektrického pole do pole magnetického a naopak. Tímto postupným přeléváním se elektromagnetické energie šíří prostorem daleko od zdrojů. Přelévání energie elektrického pole do pole magnetického popisuje Ampérův zákon celkového proudu. Teče-li tenkým drátem vodivý proud i (elektrony v pohybu) a posuvný proud d/dt (harmonická změna polarizace dielektrika kondenzátoru po přiložení harmonického napětí na elektrody), vzniknou kolem tohoto drátu prstencové siločáry magnetického pole

2.2 Differential formulation Integral formulation of Maxwell’s equations helps us to explain principles of fundamental electromagnetic phenomena. Řešení Maxwellových rovnic v integrálním tvaru je však velmi náročné. Proto Maxwellovy rovnice vyjádříme parciálními diferenciálními rovnicemi, a ty budeme numericky řešit.

2.2 Diferenciální formulace Integrální formulace Maxwellových rovnic nám umožňuje názorně vysvětlit podstatu základních elektromagnetických jevů. Dividing by a small value of h, an error of the numerical solution is significantly increased. Therefore, a compromise between demands has to be found. A proper value of h can be verified experimentally: if the value of the difference stays stable for ten-times higher h and ten-times lower h, the value of h can be accepted as appropriate. The numerator of (2.15) contains the difference of functional values in two neighboring points. If the functional value does not change, the difference equals zero. The derivative therefore expresses the measure of a change also: a high value of the derivative indicates a sharp change of the functional value. Dělení velmi malou hodnotou h však výrazně zvyšuje chybu numerického řešení. Proto je třeba kompromisu mezi uvedenými požadavky. A graphical interpretation of these dependencies (Fig. 2.4) reveals an elementary loop of electric field intensity in the xy plane. Considering Faraday’s law of induction, the loop is associated with the Hz component of magnetic field intensity, which is perpendicular to the loop. Equations (2.17a) and (2.17b) can be explained similarly. The explanation was published by Prof. Yee in the fundamental work on finite differences [2.1].

To better understand Neumann’s boundary condition, take a look at Fig. 2.5. In this figure, the back wall and the right wall of a rectangular waveguide are in grey color. Rectangular waveguide walls are perfect electric conductors. The electromagnetic wave propagates from the z direction (i.e. upwards). The spatial distribution of the longitudinal component of the magnetic field intensity Hz is shown in colors. This component is tangential to all four waveguide walls. The magnitude of the magnetic field intensity Ht does not change when perpendicularly moving towards the back wall (i.e. in the direction of y). The derivative of Ht in the direction of the normal towards the wall xz is therefore equal to zero. When perpendicularly moving towards the right wall (i.e. in the direction of x) we approach the maximum of the harmonic function. The tangent to the top is parallel in the direction of x. The magnitude of Ht does not change with an infinitely small step in the direction of x; consequently, the derivative of a function on the right wall in the direction of the normal is equal to zero as well. Thus, the Neumann boundary condition is on the walls of the waveguide fulfilled.

Vztah (2.23) vyjadřuje divergenci vektorové funkce B v kartézském souřadném systému. Velikost divergence je dána součtem změny x-ové složky funkce ve směru x, změny y-ové složky funkce ve směru y a změny z-ové složky funkce ve směru z. Vektorový součin operátoru nabla a vektorové funkce E vyjadřuje rotaci vektoru. Výpočet rotace v kartézském souřadném systému jsme uvedli ve vztahu (2.16) a její interpretaci v následném textu.

2.3 Vlnová rovnice Předpokládejme, že se elektromagnetické veličiny harmonicky mění. Časovou změnu těchto veličin lze popsat otáčením fázorů E( r) a H( r) v komplexní rovině

Plane wave has a planar wavefront (plane with the same phase).



The wavefront is perpendicular to a direction of the wave propagation.



Both the electric field intensity vector E and the magnetic field intensity vector H are perpendicular to the direction of the wave propagation as well as to each other.



In the direction of wave propagation, the plane wave changes its phase only; the amplitude is in a lossless free space constant. Assume that the wavefront lies in a xy plane and the wave propagates in the direction of the zaxis of the Cartesian coordinate system. Considering a harmonic field source generating a wave of an angular frequency ω, instantaneous values of field intensities E(x, y, z, t) and H(x, y, z, t) will act as harmonic functions of a time exp(jt) and as harmonic functions of a spatial coordinate in the direction of propagation exp(jkz). Whereas the angular frequency expresses the phase change in time  = 2 / T, the wave number is the change in phase in a length unit k = 2 /: 

T represents a time period of a harmonic signal. During one period, the phase is changed by 2 rad.



λ represents a wavelength (spatial signal period). The wavelength expresses the distance in which the phase changes by 2 rad.

Therefore, the instantaneous value of the electric field intensity can be formulated as

Rovinná vlna má planární vlnoplochu (plochu se stejnou fází).



Vlnoplocha je kolmá ke směru šíření vlny.



Vektor intenzity elektrického pole E a vektor intenzity magnetického pole H jsou kolmé ke směru šíření vlny, a současně jsou na sebe kolmé navzájem.



Rovinná vlna mění ve směru šíření pouze svou fázi; amplituda je v bezeztrátovém volném prostoru ve směru šíření konstantní.

Předpokládejme, že vlnoplocha leží v rovině xy a vlna se šíří ve směru osy z kartézského souřadného systému. Uvažujeme-li harmonický zdroj pole, který generuje vlnu s úhlovým kmitočtem , budou okamžité hodnoty intenzit polí E( x, y, z, t) a H( x, y, z, t) harmonickými funkcemi času exp( jt) a harmonickými funkcemi prostorové souřadnice ve směru šíření exp( jkz). Zatímco úhlový kmitočet vyjadřuje změnu fáze za jednotku času  = 2 / T, vlnové číslo je změnou fáze na jednotce délky k = 2 / : 
