THE Grand Alliance consortium has announced a 14% increase in tonnage in 2006 to meet what it calls ‘ projected growth’in demand and services. New vessels ordered by member lines amount to 112 vessels with total capacity of 640,000 TEU, the Alliance stated today. Member lines include Hapag-Lloyd Container Line, Malaysia International Shipping Corp, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Orient Overseas Container Line. The new service structure in the three main East-West trade lanes follows the resignation of P&O Nedlloyd, which has been acquired by AP Møller-Maersk. Discussions have taken place with Maersk with both sides pledging ‘ full co-operation’to ensure a smooth transition in 2006, the Alliance stated. The PONL resignation takes effect from 12 February next year.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 184 The ship, which is loaded with 165,000 tonnes of iron ore, reportedly ran aground on Saturday at about 14:00GMT. Ship manager V Ships said the vessel grounded on a sandy bottom 12 nautical miles northeast of the Horsburgh Lighthouse on the eastern bank of the Middle Channel. The Singapore-flagged ship was eventually refloated on Monday at 23:15GMT. A subsequent inspection by divers found no damage. The master of the Front Rider reports that contact by way of the port bow resulted in “no ingress of water, no pollution and no injuries to crew members”. The V Ships UK Contingency Team was helped in the refloating operation by Lloyds Emergency Response Services (SERS) and salvors Smit. Last October TradeWinds reported that the Front Rider had been fixed for three years by North China Lines at a full $39,000 per day. V Ships said it will undertake a “full investigation”into the cause of the incident
Tall ships publiekstrekkers tijdens Sail
In 1985 redde Amsterdammer H. PSi-Daily maritime press clippings

- Tarangini: in 1995 in India gebouwd.

Huge salvage barge shelters from weather in EL
THE 1400 ton Dormac barge, Jumbo, at just on half the size of a rugby field, and her attendant tug, Pentow Service, from Durban, put into East London over the weekend in weather which demanded top seamanship. The vessels will be used by the Dutch salvors, SvitzerWijsmuller, to salvage 7000 hardwood logs from the wreck of the stranded bulk-carrier Kiperousa near Wesley. Swells of six metres prevented the operation from starting on Friday. "The weather forecast was for big seas until at least Monday, so we decided to head for East London and, as you see, conditions are still pretty rough,"said salvage master Nic Sloane yesterday. "Hopefully we can look at starting work on Wednesday or later in the week," he added. He added that the crack in the hull of the doomed Kiperousa had widened but at present there was no imminent danger of the logs awash in the four flooded holds being lost overboard. Both the Pentow Service and the Jumbo, which is 45m long with a beam of 19m, are berthed on the West Bank.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 184 A second tug and barge which the salvors intend using in the new phase of the Kiperousa salvage operation are steaming to the Sunshine Coast from the Middle East. Sloane said this barge, with a displacement of 5500 tons, "is closer to a rugby pitch" at 82m long and 26m wide. The South African Maritime Safety Association, which has to approve any salvage plan before it is put into operation, hold a $25m guarantee lodged by the Kiperousa's French underwriters for the salvage operation, wreck removal and cleaning up of any pollution.
Viking ship built with 15 million ice cream sticks
A replica Viking ship made of 15 million ice cream sticks was launched in Amsterdam by a former Hollywood stuntman who hopes eventually to sail it across the Atlantic.
The 15-metre ship, which took Robert McDonald two years to build, was launched in Amsterdam harbour with a crew of around 25 in a bid to set a world record for the largest sailing ship made of ice cream sticks. The Viking longship, equipped with oars and a mast, is built with sticks of birch-wood glued together painstakingly by McDonald and two volunteers in a Dutch workshop. It was put through its paces around 90 minutes on Tuesday. "It's a dream come true. It's truly worth all the hard work," McDonald said. "I never want to look at glue again. I don't think I will be in a hurry to look at ice cream sticks again," the 45-year-old from Florida said. The ice cream sticks used to make the ship were provided by Unilever's ice cream maker OLA and by children who collected discarded sticks around the world. McDonald, whose Sea Heart Foundation helps provide leisure activities for children in hospitals, hopes to sail his Viking ship across the Atlantic next year. "That's still the ultimate goal, to sail across the Atlantic in the Viking-style," McDonald said.

US softens military ties with New Zealand The United States has relaxed a 20-year-old ban on joint military exercises with New Zealand, imposed over the Pacific island country's strict anti-nuclear policies, reports said on Wednesday. The US has invited New Zealand to take part this week in exercise Deep Sabre off Singapore in which a number of Pacific nations will practice intercepting ships carrying weapons of mass destruction. Washington has barred New Zealand from joint military exercises since the mid-1980s, when the former Labour government of then-Prime Minister David Lange introduced a law declaring the country nuclearfree. It banned US nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered ships from its ports, and Washington retaliated by withdrawing New Zealand's ally status and cutting military ties, including the exchange of intelligence. The US embassy in Wellington confirmed New Zealand's participation in this week's exercise, which includes Australia, Britain and Japan, the Dominion Post reported. Peter Cozens, director of Victoria University's Centre for Strategic Studies, said that the move was "extremely significant" and an apparent step towards restoring normal relations. DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 184 Lange's death on Saturday and the campaign for next month's general election have revived attention on the anti-nuclear policy. The current Labour government claims the main opposition conservative National Party wants to relax the policy to improve relations with Washington. National Party leader Don Brash insists this would not be done without voter approval in a referendum.
Two U.S.-built Kidd-class destroyers to join Taiwan navy before year end Taiwan's naval defense capabilities against rival China will be boosted after two Kidd-class guided missile destroyers join the island's forces, a high-ranking naval officer said Tuesday. The first two of the four second-hand destroyers on order were due to leave the United States in early November, Rear Admiral Li Hau told reporters. A further two U.S.-built Kidd-class destroyers are expected to join the navy next year, he added."The acquisition of the warships will be a milestone in the lifting of the navy's combat capabilities," Li said. Taiwan acquired the four 9,600-tonne destroyers as part of an arms package approved by U.S. President George W. Bush in April 2002. The deal, which followed a two-year review by the United States of Taiwan's air force and navy, has infuriated China, which opposes any arms sales to the island it regards as part of its territory. Taiwan and China split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.Last month the Pentagon released a report warning that China had deployed up to 730 ballistic missiles targeting the island. It said Beijing's defense build-up could tip the military balance against Taiwan and pose a credible threat to other countries in the region. Analysts say Taiwan's navy badly needs the destroyers, which will be armed with Standard II missiles and a system capable of simultaneously tracking dozens of incoming air bone threats. The surface-to-air missiles have a range of 144 kilometers (90 miles) and vastly outperform the Standard I missiles deployed on Taiwan's Perry-class frigates. The Kidd warships will boost the navy's surveillance capabilities, and provide Taiwan with a maritime antimissile platform, said Tamkang University professor Wung Ming-hsien. China in 1996 fired ballistic missiles into the shipping lanes of Taiwan in an apparent attempt to intimidate the island's voters not to vote for then president Lee Teng-hui who was seeking re-election. The crisis ended only after the United States sent two battle carrier groups to waters off Taiwan in a warning to Beijing not to invade the island.

Samsung making money again Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has returned to profitability in the first half of 2005, but remains well short of 2004’ s figures. It posted net earnings of KRW 15.13bn ($14.88) to 30 June, compared to KRW 56.92bn in the corresponding six months of 2004. Like all Korean yards, higher steel prices have been taking their toll. Samsung logged a loss of KRW 4.5bn in the first quarter, against a profit of KRW 15bn in the same period of 2004. Revenues in the first six months climbed to KRW 2.68 trillion, from KRW 2.31 trillion.

German feeders join forces CONTAINER feeder lines operating out of Bremerhaven and Hamburg have followed the deepsea carriers’ model and agreed to share their slot capacity. Team Lines, Baltic Container Line (BCL) and IMC Line, which carry transhipment containers from the German ports to the Baltic Sea region, hope to optimise their processes by combining cargoes. “They are able to reduce the number of port calls substantially,” explained Christian von Georg, managing director of liner agency PWL, which represents BCL in Bremerhaven. “In Hamburg for example all the operators used to call at all three container terminals consecutively. Now each of them is focusing on one facility.”The initiative has also been welcomed by local terminal operator Eurogate, which hopes to raise its efficiency by reducing the number of feeder calls.

Normal ops at Port Klang, no delays due to haze
Last week's haze, which reduced visibility in western Malaysia and caused schools to be closed, did not cause any delays at the country's busiest harbour, says the chairman of the operator of Port Klang. 'The port is in operation now,' said Port Klang Authority's chairman Yap Pian Hon, in a phone interview yesterday from the port, west of the Malaysian capital. 'We stopped operations for two hours.' The government declared a state of alert last week at Port Klang and in nearby Kuala Selangor town, after air pollution reached levels considered hazardous by the health ministry. Schools were shut and outdoor restaurants were mostly empty for several days. At the worst of the haze, a pall of smoke hung over the country, the result of forest blazes sparked by dry weather or set by farmers clearing land in Borneo and Sumatra islands. The pollution threatened air and sea traffic and was among the worst since 1997-98, when the El Nino weather effect exacerbated the haze, harming tourism and health and resulting in US$9 billion of losses throughout the region. Port Klang sits on the west coast of Malaysia's peninsula, along the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Three ports operate at Port Klang. Container traffic at Northport, the biggest handler of Malaysia's import and export cargo, rose 8.8 per cent in the first nine months of 2004 to 2.04 million 20-foot boxes. Port Klang Authority's Mr Yap did not provide updated figures of the port's traffic. About 50,000 ships ply the narrow Malacca Strait annually, carrying about a third of world trade and half its oil supplies. The strait separates Peninsular Malaysia from Indonesia's Sumatra island.
K Line ups forecast
Diversified Japanese shipowner Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha is expecting the current financial year to deliver a better than forecast profit despite high bunker costs. K Line figures on paring JPY 5bn ($46m) from its overheads in the current year but has only put a JPY 1bn reduction into its forecast of a JPY 69bn profit forecast. K Line is benefiting from strong cargo volumes between Asia and the US and Asia and Europe. The improved outlook was disclosed by Mamoru Shozui, the K Line managing director responsible for investor relations in an interview with the Bloomberg newswire. K Line which recently disclosed a first quarter profit of JPY 15.5bn, down from JPY 17.2bn for the same period of last year sees cargo volumes remaining strong, with bulk carrier freight rates recovering in the second half, while the trend for tanker rates will also be favourable. Although profitability was down through the first three months of the current financial year operating revenues were higher at JPY 221bn, up from JPY 199 bn in the first quarter of 2004. The Japanese financial year begins in April. About 360 vessels including containerships, bulkers, tankers, car transporters and LPG and LNG carriers are operated by K Line, the third largest of the Japanese shipping giants. PSA in US$755m bid for Turkish port PSA International may soon be operating another Mediterranean terminal after submitting a US$755 million bid along with its joint venture partner for a 36-year operating lease at Turkey's Mersin port. Better volume: At its Singapore terminals, PSA handled 9.6 per cent more containers over the first seven months of the year, compared to the year-ago period, for a total throughput of 12.84 million. PSA teamed up with Turkish Akfen Holdings, a diversified company involved in construction, tourism, defence industries, insurance brokerage and industrial plants among others. The PSA-Akfen joint venture was among three consortiums competing for the project, which included Hutchison Port Holdings and the Dubai Port Authority (DPI), according to the online TurkishPress. The Global-Hutchison joint venture dropped out of the contest in the third round leaving just two competing groups. The PSA-Akfen group submitted the highest bid of US$755 million, according to the report. PSA International declined to comment. The tender results for the port located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea opposite Cyprus, which currently has three quay cranes for container handling as well as breakbulk facilities, will now be presented to Turkey's competition and privatisation boards for approval. The PSA-Akfen joint venture is expected to invest a further US$70-100 million to upgrade the facilities. The port is currently operated by the General Directorate of Turkish State Railways. Meanwhile, PSA said in a statement yesterday that it handled 9.3 per cent more containers globally in the first seven months of this year from a year earlier, for a total of 20.70 million TEUs (or 20-ft containers). At its Singapore terminals, PSA handled 9.6 per cent more containers over the period for a total throughput of 12.84 million.
