DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 254 Mr O’ Connor said: “The Irish Ferries dispute is a defining moment in the relations between employers and workers in this country. It is a moment which challenges everyone, on all sides, to declare on the side of decency, social dialogue and constructive engagement, or on the side of thuggery, brutality and the law of the jungle.” He added: “As SIPTU has consistently stated throughout, the future of social partnership comes down to the question as to whether the Government is prepared to take the necessary measures to address job displacement, exploitation and the protection of employment standards. Whereas we have said that its future will not be decided by one dispute, it is difficult to see how it can survive if the Government cannot bring itself to address these issues of job displacement, exploitation and protection of employment standards.”
Rolls-Royce starts delivery of new shark jaws and tow pins Rolls-Royce reports that it has begun deliveries of its newly developed shark jaw and tow pin systems. The first tow pin systems are already in operation on board KV Harstad, Abeille Bourbon and Abeille Liberte. "These units will be able to serve the anchor handling deck operations with increased safety and functionality," said the company, noting that the tow pins meet NMD requirement, can grab lines more than 1m above deck and pull down force of more than 50 tons. During pull down the line will be centred into the catch area of the shark jaw. Independent operation enables the tow pins to be used for aligning chain. The shark jaws are equipped with load sensing, connected to the winch monitoring system, and provide continuous monitoring of the load in wire or chain. "Together these units will enable securing of load in shark jaws without personnel in exposed area," noted Rolls-Royce. The units will be installed in more than 15 vessels in 2006.
P&O agrees to takeover bid UK ports and ferries group P&O has agreed to a £3.3 billion takeover bid from Gulf-state backed Dubai Ports World.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 254 The deal is set to create one of the world's largest shipping companies. Dubai Ports World, created by the merger of two state-owned entities in September, said it would retain P&O's management and keep the group headquartered in London. P&O said Dubai Ports had offered 443 pence per share in an all-cash bid for the 165-year-old British company. The offer was at the top end of market expectations. P&O is the world's fourth-largest ports group, and its iconic brand-name still appears on cruise ship operations it no longer owns. It also owns a ferries business operating between Britain and France which was scaled back in the past year as part of a strategic review.
Indians plan Oregon demolition yard THE first ship breaking yard on the US West Coast will be in the state of Oregon, if the port of Newport approves a deal with Bay Bridge Enterprises. Ghost fleet ships moored at Suisun Bay, California are currently being towed through the Panama Canal to scrapping and salvage yards on the US Gulf and East Coasts, an expensive proposition for the US Maritime Administration (MarAd). Port commissioners voted last week not to immediately lease the 6-hectare site to the yard, but to seek additional public comment. Bay Bridge, which is owned by India-based Adani, operates a breaking yard on the Chesapeake Bay that holds several contracts to dispose of ships in the MarAd-operated reserve fleet – mainly from the James River moorage on the East Coast. MarAd could use the help as acting administrator John Jamian has told Fairplay that only US yards can be used under environmental laws and that only a few yards currently accept such projects. More than 100 ghost ships must be scrapped before September 2006 under a Congressional mandate and federal auditors have expressed doubt as to whether the deadline can be met. While many in the Newport government welcome the Bay Bridge overture, area residents complain that such a yard will harm home values.

OCEAN VOYAGER SANK The OCEAN VOYAGER, sank about 300 miles offshore of Iran.
Around 6AM in about 1 meter seas, the navigator went down to the engine room to lower the UBSL pole, so that we could begin surveying. The chain used to lower the pole suddenly snapped. There was no safety chain attached and the flange at the top of the pole, which would have prevented the pole from dropping all the way through the hole flew off. Therefore, the USBL pole fell 3000 meters down to the bottom of the ocean, leaving a 12 inch hole in the ships hull. As you can expect, water started flooding the engine room. Crew members tried to fit a metal plate over the hole, however this proved to be impossible due to the pressure of the water. Non-essential personnel, were immediately transferred by FRC to the chase boat, the MICLYN SEARCHER (MS). Meanwhile, the crew continued to try to contain the flooding. The engines and ship power were quickly shut down, and emergency power was turned on. The pumps on the OV and the MS proved too small to be effective, so the engine room's watertight door was closed & dogged down. Unfortunately, this door was not exactly watertight, and water proceeded to flood compartment next to the engine room. PSi-Daily maritime clippings

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 254
Meanwhile, MAYDAY calls were issued from both the OV and the MS. The first to respond was a Coalition Warship, which later turned out to be the USS SEATTLE (AOE 3), a fast combat support ship. Since it would take a while for the SEATTLE to arrive, a Canadian C-130, and a Japanese helicopter were dispatched to the location. These aircrafts remained until the end. Soon, a US helicopter also arrived carrying with it 2 large pumps and a damage control (DC) crew to operate the pumps. When the equipment and personnel were safely lowered onto the OV, the helo returned to pick up and deliver a third pump. Unfortunately, two of these pumps became clogged with debris, and the DC crew were never able to get them to operate. The Commanding Officer (CO) on board the SEATTLE was informed by the DC crew the only chance that the OV had to stay afloat was if divers were dispatched to try and repair the hole. This solution was rejected by the CO. As a last ditch effort, a tarp was unfurled over the side and under the keel to try and cover the hole and slow the flooding. However, this effort proved futile. Eventually, the SEATTLE arrived on site. The CO assessed the situation and decided that despite all efforts, the OV was going to be a "long-term loss." He instructed all crew and instruments to be removed and the ship was then abandoned. When all crew member were onboard the MS, the Captain and Party Chief made one last trip back by FRC to try and release the second towfish (the first was released earlier by FSSI marine techs) and try retrieve whatever personal effects that they could. Things retrieved included some undergarments, camera, 3 bottles of alcohol, one flip flop (right foot)and one Teva (left foot), various souvenirs. However, things such as wallets, house keys, cell phone, address book, and CD's now reside on the bottom of the Arabian Sea. It took a few hours before the OV finally sank, but when it happened, she went down by the port bow. Afterwards, the MS sailed through the floating debris and was able to retrieve the two towfish, along with the 8 life rafts, which had automatically deployed. The MS then began a rather rough 16 hour transit to Muscat, Oman. While the MS was steaming, the crew of the former-OV spent the night consuming the salvaged alcohol, and trying to sleep on spare mattresses, which were placed on the deck for us. Once we arrived in Oman, it took many hours for officials to take statements and issue visas. The crew of the OV was then taken to a hotel, where we cleaned up, put on whatever clothes we could find, and went shopping for clothes, shoes, and toiletries. Crew members, who were able to save their money and credit cards, supported those of us who lost everything. We left Oman very late Thursday night and spent the next 24 hours on airplanes. The Seattle, WA based crew returned home on Saturday afternoon, and we were met at the airport by the president of our company, the Survey Manager, and the Engineering Manager. One of my co-workers was also met by his family, who flew all the way out from Virginia. I cannot even venture a guess on what will be the repercussions of this event. Besides our personal losses, my company lost about US$2 million worth of uninsured gear, including 20 km of fiber optic cable (10 km of which was flaked on the deck in two 5 km pieces due to a previous incident), traction winch, a hydraulic power unit (HPU), and lots of electronic and computer gear. Additionally, it is unknown how much of the data, from the survey, was recovered. I do know that there are already gaggles of lawyers hovering around and I am relatively certain that there will be many lawsuits between FSSI, the clients (Gardline), and their clients.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2005 – 254 While this was an extremely harrowing experience, I am thankful that everyone was able to safely get off the ship. I am fully aware that things can be replaced, while people cannot. We were very lucky that this happened in daylight hours in calm seas. We were also lucky that we had a chase boat following us and a Navy warship, so close by.

Shipbuilders to Win Qatargas Orders
South Korean shipbuilders are likely to receive a large amount of orders to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from a leading gas company in Qatar, industry sources said Tuesday. Qatargas, a joint venture between energy giant Exxon Mobile Corp. and state-run Qatar Petroleum, plans to place orders for 70 to 100 LNG ships, according to a shipping industry magazine, Trade Winds. The value of the orders is estimated to reach US$16.5 billion, it said. In addition, Qatargas plans to produce 14 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 2014, which will require 20 to 30 very large gas carriers (VLGCs), the magazine said. Earlier this year, South Korea's top three shipbuilders -- Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. – clinched long-term orders to build LNG tankers worth a combined $10 billion from Qatargas. "Qatargas is likely to contact South Korean shipbuilders first," said an an official from Daewoo Shipbuilding. "Only a few companies, including Daewoo and Hyundai, are capable of building VLGCs."

Boxship charter rates under pressure BOXSHIP charter rates remain under pressure with spot fixtures becoming far more commonplace. According to Braemar Seascope: ‘ The spot market continues to offer some respite to those charterers in a position to take early ships, but it would appear that there are now only two or three further vessels available on the charter market this year.’Recent fixtures include the 1,152-TEU X-Press Kailash, which has been extended by Singapore-based Sea Consortium for one year. This Orient Express Lines-owned, 1982-built, vessel has attained a rate of $12,750/day. AIRPORT / AIRCRAFT NEWS
