Introducing Acergy
Stolt Offshore is becoming Acergy.
The SEAWAY OSPREY enroute a shipyard in Amsterdam to be re-painted in the new ACERGY colours and will leave the dry dock with her new name ACERGY OSPREY Photo : Joop Marechal © Following the sale of Stolt-Nielsen’ s shares in the company, Stolt Offshore was required to change their name for legal reasons. But this obligation also gives the company a unique opportunity – to create a new name and brand that reflect their vision and values. This evolution is yet another key step in the development of the group. Becoming Acergy sends out a clear signal to the world about Acergy’ s intentions. It tells their clients, their partners and their employees that Acergy will work as one group worldwide. Globally aware and capable, but also sensitive to local markets and issues. Acergy possesses a wealth of experience and a strong reputation. What’ s new is not only the name and PSi-Daily Shipping News

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 024 visual identity – but also the way Acergy want to work with their clients. They aim to become more closely connected to them – to understand what they need and respond accordingly. Acergy want to use their expertise to improve the quality of the service we provide for them – and to continue raising the bar on quality all the time. Ultimately, with their support Acergy want to be recognised as the acknowledged leader in seabed-to-surface engineering and construction; a partner the client can trust absolutely. Acergy recognise that there’ s still some way to go to achieve this – but they determined that becoming Acergy will mark the next stage in the development of the business. Acergy did not come out of the blue. It’ s the end product of a rigorous process to find a name that is original and adaptable, that sets he company apart from our competitors, and that they can own legally and in every other sense. The name Acergy is chosen because it meets all the naming objectives: It’ s distinctive – it sets Acergy apart from their competitors. It’ s original – created a unique word to name a unique business. It’ s memorable – a simple, three-syllable word that sticks in the mind. It’ s practical – easy to say Ay-ser-gee and with just six letters, easy to use on everything from business cards to vessel hulls. It’ s appropriate – the word derives from the Latin term for sharp – a subtle reference to both the services we provide and the way we work. And by fusing Acer with an element of the word energy we also sustain a link with our industry. In fact, we create both a name and a descriptive term that sums up Acergy’ s attitude and approach.
ACERGY The name has been through the legal processes and is now fully registered.
Greek Farmers and Sailors Clash Farmers clashed on the island of Crete with striking seamen who kept Greece's ports closed for a fifth day on Monday. The protest has caused food and gasoline supply problems for some Greek islands, and forced farmers to dump perishable goods. The clashes broke out at the Cretan ports of Iraklio and Hania, where protesting farmers stormed into a local government building and tried to cut ropes keeping ships at port. Protesting seamen began the strike Thursday, seeking better pay and pension rights. They are due to end the stoppage Wednesday. The government has put navy vessels on standby to transport emergency supplies, and appealed Monday to the striking Greek Seamen's Federation to restart some commercial ship services. "This is a very serious issue which concerns not only the seamen but the farmers whose produce ... is being destroyed because of the delays created by the strike," government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said. "In every strike there are usually provisions made for emergencies," he said. "We request that one ship be allowed to sail to each destination to cover emergency requirements."
Kidnappers carry out attack on oil plant and navy vessel MILITANTS holding nine foreign hostages, including one Briton, in southern Nigeria said they attacked another oil facility today and blew up a military vessel in ongoing violence that has cut about 20 percent of crude production in Africa's oil giant. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said they attacked a Shell-operated pipeline switching station and a navy vessel in the oil-rich southern region. "Both were destroyed with explosives," the group said. The militants said no one had been killed. A London-based Shell spokeswoman had no information on any violence against the company's facilities. Nigeria is reeling from weekend attacks in which militants blasted pipelines and sabotaged a key oil loading terminal belonging to Royal Dutch Shell, forcing the company to halt the flow of about 455,000 barrels a day.
Time warp as 18th century ship docks For a brief moment, just after two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, the V&A Waterfront seemed to have been caught in a time warp as the Gotheborg, a replica of an 18th-century Swedish sailing ship, arrived for a stopover in Cape Town. When the replica of a famous Swedish East India Company ship approached the harbour, Cape Town was misty, making it seem almost untouched by the 20th century. Photo : Jan J. Westerbeek © MV Prinsendam The ship left the harbour of Sweden's second-biggest city, Gothenburg, on October 2 on a voyage to Canton, now known as Guangzhou, in China. 'Seeing Table Mountain was naturally another high' Her namesake's last voyage ended dramatically on a misty day in September 1745 when she hit a rock and sank in Gothenburg harbour. Inspired by a group of enthusiastic individuals, the Svenska Ostindiska Companiet was re-established in the 1990s and a replica of the ship built. Whereas the original ship had to sail past the Cape because of hostile Dutch traders, her replica was welcomed by a cheering crowd of hundreds of people. The 76 tanned crew members respectfully listened to South Africa's national anthem. In their midst were four young Capetonians who had been given the opportunity to sail with them from Recife, Brazil. One, Nolonwabo Maritie Yipha, 21, of Cape Town, who began sailing a year ago, said: "The first four days were terrible because I was seasick, but the rest of the six weeks will stick with me for the rest of my life." DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 024 Her hands full of calluses and her arms bruised, Yipha said just before recognising her family in the dense crowd: "It was hard work, but I cannot imagine that I will again sail on a ship this beautiful." For Capetonian Leroy Rudolf, 18, the highlight of the 40-day voyage was climbing the rigging. Photo : Jan J. Westerbeek © MV Prinsendam "Not to forget the Swedish people. I have made friends for life," he said. "Seeing Table Mountain was naturally another high. It feels good to be home. I am ready for a cold beer now." Several events involving the ship have been planned until February 28, when she leaves for Gothenburg's partner city, Port Elizabeth. On March 9 she continues her voyage to Guangzhou, which she is expected to reach in July.
Strong wind, waves hamper China rescue of 31 seamen.
Rescuers were fighting strong wind and waves yesterday as they searched for 31 sailors missing after a Panamaregistered freighter sank off China's south-eastern coast, the government said. Four sailors had been rescued and two bodies recovered since the freighter sank on Thursday off Pingtan Island in Fujian province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The Hengda 1 sank with 37 crew members aboard after hitting a coral reef in stormy weather, according to the government. On Sunday, the East China Sea Salvage Bureau under China's Ministry of Communications sent a 14-member rescue team, including 10 divers and engineers, to join the rescue effort but operations were hampered by fierce wind and high waves, Xinhua said. A rescue official said earlier that the ship was bound for Indonesia with a cargo of seafood. Xinhua said that all the crew members were Chinese but did not give their identities. Panama's Maritime Authority said on Saturday that it would send an investigator to China to look into the incident - the second fatal sinking of a ship on its registry this month. On Feb 3, the Al-Salaam Boccaccio 98, a ferry bearing Panamanian registry, sank in the Red Sea, killing about 1,000 people. Panama has one of the largest ship registries in the world, with 6,500 vessels flying its flag. It is widely considered a 'flag of convenience' because of the country's low registration costs and requirements. The Maritime Authority said earlier this month that it will tighten oversight of the companies that inspect its ships.

SINGAPORE BUDGET BOOSTS SHIPPING MOVES by the Singapore government to boost the shipping sector have been welcomed by the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA). It says measures in the Singapore’ s Budget for 2006/2007 for the maritime and logistics industries will enhance the further development of Singapore as an international maritime centre. In a statement the SSA says: “The lengthening of the maximum period of renewal for shipping companies under the Approved International Shipping (AIS) scheme from 20 years to 30 years is a welcome move that will continue to attract shipowners and operators to establish a substantial and long-lasting presence in Singapore. The extension of the AIS status by another 10 years will provide the much need certainty to shipping companies who are competing in a global market.” Also just announced is a new Maritime Finance Incentive, where ship investment vehicles receive a tax exemption on their qualifying income and ship investment managers receive a 10% concession on their qualifying income, will serve to encourage ship-financing activities in Singapore. This move is seen as response to comments by SSA President SS Teo, who is also the Chairman of the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), that, though Singapore is an important shipping and maritime hub, it lacks more creative form of ship financing. SSA also notes: “Removing the need to show that derivative trades are incidental to physical trades will make it easier for traders to enjoy the 10% concessionary tax rate under the Global Trader Programme (GTP), thus further encouraging international trade out of Singapore.” Moreover, according to SSA: “The automatic GST suspension for goods removed from zero-GST warehouses by any party registered under the Major Exporter Scheme (MES) or the Approved Third Party Logistics (3PL) Company Scheme will remove the administrative burden and facilitate Singapore’ s role as a transhipment hub.”

Transatlantic to Sell 4 Vessels Transatlantic has sold the 14,900-DWT bulk carrier "Tofton" and the 14,240-DWT forest product carrier "Margit Gorthon" to foreign buyers, reports SSG. The vessels, built 1980 and 1977 respectively, are chartered back for two and four years respectively. During this time, Transatlantic expects to order and to get deliveries of new tonnage. The deal doesn't affect the result but the liquidity is strenghtened by SEK 70 million. The company is also selleing the forest product carriers "Joh. Gorthon" and "Acacia", built in 1977 and 1974, respectively. According to Hakan Larsson, md of Transatlantic, the sell-offs is a part of the fleet renewal program and more units are expected to follow during the year. Selling out older tonnage is also a way to reduce the risk of engine failures and other breakdowns due to the high age of the vessels and the often harsh wheater conditions in the areas they traffic. Dubai Ports seeks US$6.5b to buy P&O Dubai Ports World will borrow US$6.5 billion to finance its acquisition of British port and ferries group P&O, a statement said on Saturday. DP World has mandated Barclays Capital and Deutsche Bank to 'arrange facilities totalling US$6.5 billion incorporating a US$6.3 billion (syndicated) term loan facility and a US$200 million revolving credit facility for working capital purposes . . . to finance acquisition of Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O)', the statement said. The five-year facilities will also be used to 'refinance existing indebtedness', it said. Barclays Capital is the investment banking division of Barclays Bank, which along with Deutsche Bank has underwritten the facilities. Syndication of the facilities will begin next week, with bank meetings planned in Dubai on February 23 and in London on February 27. DP World's acquisition of P&O will make it one of the three largest container ports businesses worldwide, the statement added. P&O shareholders approved last week a US$6.8 billion takeover bid by DP World. The deal has sparked criticism from lawmakers and others in the United States because it will give the Dubai government-owned company control of six major US ports.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 024 Norsafe, the well known manufacturer of maritime rescue systems and high-speed rescue boats, has announced record sales in 2005. In addition, the company has acquired 90 per cent of Watercraft Greece SA, a producer of lifeboats, high-speed rescue boats and davits based north of Athens. During the last two months of 2005, Norsafe received orders with an estimated value of more than EUR 44 million, a new record for the company. According to Norsafe owner and managing director Geir Skaala, orders have been received from clients around the world. "The surge in demand for Norsafe products is driven in part by developments in the offshore industry in Norway and abroad," he explained. A significant order book in 2005 of EUR 32 million, represents an increase of 30 per cent compared to 2004. In 2004, the end of year result was EUR one million before taxes. Skaala anticipates considerable improvement of the results in 2005. Mr Skaala noted that with the sharp increase in sales for 2005, Norsafe anticipates that 2006 will also be another good year - the company (including subsidiaries) expects to deliver approximately 600 lifeboats and rescue boats and approximately 275 davits. "We are confident that we can continue to build on this success," said Mr Skaala, and to help keep pace with increased demand, Norsafe has purchased more than 90 per cent of the stock of Watercraft Greece SA. "Watercraft has been a key supplier to Norsafe for several years," said Mr Skaala, "and we look forward to working more closely with them in the future." At present, the company has 40 employees, based in facilities located north of Athens. "With this investment, Norsafe will have the capacity to improve production of davits, which we can distribute throughout Europe," said Mr Skaala. Following the purchase of Watercraft, lifeboat production will take place at Norsafe’ s facilities in Norway, China and Greece. In addition, certain boat models will be produced by license manufacturers in Mexico. The davits will be manufactured in a separate factory in Greece, using sub-suppliers in Norway, China and Mexico, when appropriate.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 024 The company says the demand for supply vessels in the North Sea during Q4 was about 20% higher than for the Q4, 2004, but some 4% lower than for the Q3. It added: “During the quarter there has been a good balance between supply and demand. The available fleet in the North Sea has increased by 15% compared to the year-end 2004/2005. The strong increase in activity this quarter has given an average utilization ratio of 94% for the total North Sea fleet. This has resulted in a high rate level most of the quarter. The average utilisation for the 3rd quarter 2005 was 95% and 91% for the 4th quarter 2004 .The average for the year was 93% compared to 88% for 2004. The market in Australia/The Far East has improved during 2005.”Farstad says: “The market trend is very promising in the near future. High oil prices, the oil companies increased focus on exploration and the contracting of new rigs are positive for the demand of supply vessels. The high market activity has resulted in the need of renewal of older and smaller tonnage. The contract coverage for the Farstad-fleet in the first 6 months of 2006 is approx. 90% and approx. 66% for the second half year. For 2007 the contract overage is now approx. 27%.”
