BC Ferries workers face sack Canada’s BC Ferries could sack unionized crew who were working on the Queen of the North the night it sank if they don't take part in the company’s probe into the disaster. BC boss David Hahn said the crew would be suspended, but could also face the axe. The 700-passenger ferry (built 1969), carrying 101 people, ran into Gil Island in Wright Sound and sank on 22 March, killing two people. "Less than four" people have refused to answer questions for a company investigation, Hahn said. He refused to say whether they are critical to the investigation or include the two who were in the wheelhouse at the time of the crash. BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union president Jackie Miller said 10 to 12 crew members who were on the ferry that night have been assigned legal counsel and been advised not to speak to BC. Miller said if the members were fired, the union would take some form of action. "We don't like threats and these people have been through enough," she said.

Inquiry opens into Egypt's worst shipping disaster The inquiry into the February 3 sinking of the ferry al-Salam 98, which went down with the loss of more than 1 000 lives, opened on Monday in the Red Sea port of Safaga, a legal source said. The hearing began in the absence of the main accused, Mamduh Ismail. He owns al-Salam, the firm which operated the 36-year-old passenger ferry between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Ismail, a member of the senate, left Egypt for Britain after the sinking -- the worst disaster in Egyptian maritime history. Egypt has issued a summons against him through Interpol, and his assets have been frozen. Two more of the six accused, Ismail's son and an al-Salam company official, were also absent. Two al-Salam company directors and the captain of the ferry Saint Catherine, accused of not going to the aid of a ship in distress, were present when the hearing opened. In a report published in April, a parliamentary commission of inquiry blamed al-Salam for the disaster, saying the firm continued to operate the ferry "despite serious defects" in the vessel. It also said the government "failed to manage the crisis adequately" in the days after the sinking. Ismail has denied responsibility for the disaster, and accused the captain of the al-Salam 98, who went down with his ship, of overestimating the crew's ability to fight a fire that broke out on board. About 1 000 people died when the ferry went down between the Saudi port of Duba and Safaga in Egypt. The passengers were mostly Egyptian itinerant workers, some of whom were bringing months', if not years', worth of savings home.

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 111 An Iranian ship has been denied entry at Gujarat's Alang ship-breaking yard following an order from the Bombay High Court, and it had to dock at the nearby Bhavnagar anchorage, official sources said on Wednesday. The ship, named Rashleigh, was to be dismantled at the Alang yard and it had arrived there on April 9, but the court later issued a direction to maintain status quo until further orders, Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) sources said in Ahmedabad. The direction reportedly came following a financial dispute among the companies that own the vessel. The ship came to Alang, India's biggest ship-breaking yard, about 220 km from Ahmedabad, along with 17 crew members consisting of nine Indians, seven Ukrainians and a Russian.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) prepares to enter Port Klang for a scheduled port visit. This port call marks the first time Reagan has visited the country of Malaysia. New Zealand Frigate To Visit India Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS TE MANA will visit India from 2 to 13 June calling into Cochin and Mumbai. During the ship's visit the New Zealand and Indian Navies will conduct their first ever exercise at sea. TE MANA and INS BETWA will sail together from Mumbai and will operate together over a period of 12 hours. The exercise will involve the ships exchanging and sharing information as well as conducting a range of other activities. The relationship between the two Navies stretches back over many years. HMNZS ACHILLES, which served in the New Zealand Navy during World War II, later joined the Indian Navy as INS DELHI. Parts of the ship are located in the Naval Base in Auckland, New Zealand, and serve as a permanent reminder of a shared bond that goes back almost sixty years. The Commanding Officer, Commander Wilson Trumper, and the 175 men and women onboard TE MANA are part way through a six month deployment to Asia. A key aspect of the ship's deployment is to demonstrate New Zealand's commitment to peace and security in the region - and to show the Navy's role in supporting this. So far, TE MANA has visited Australia, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia. In each port visited by the ship a range of events have been organised to enable the Sailors to engage with local communities - and to show a bit of what it means to be a 'Kiwi'. These events range from cultural performances by TE MANA's Maori Cultural Group, to sporting activities with local teams through to social functions hosted onboard the frigate. While TE MANA is in India, New Zealand's Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral David Ledson, will be visiting India's Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash, as well seeing a number of Indian Navy ships and facilities. The Maritime Component Commander, Joint Forces New Zealand, Commodore David Anson, will also be in India, visiting TE MANA in Mumbai and sailing onboard the ship to observe the exercise between the Navies.

Rotterdam sends large delegation to China
A DELEGATION made up of almost 100 people, consisting of team of representatives from the Port of Rotterdam and others from the Dutch port city , made an official visit to Beijing, Shanghai as well as the thriving port cities of Nanjing and Ningbo between May 27 and June 2. The delegation included Rotterdam's mayor, the chairmen of the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, the CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Hans Smits, as well as representatives from the Rotterdam Port Promotion Council. In Shanghai, Mayor Ivo Opstelten met his counterpart Han Zheng, the director of the Port of Shanghai and several shipping company directors to sign a 2006-08 agreement between Shanghai and Rotterdam. Members of the delegation also met the Chinese Minister of Communications and Transport, and visited the head office of shipping gaint, Cosco. Mayor Opstelten said in a statement from port authorities: "Shanghai offers enormous possibilities for the Rotterdam business community. This is why I'm very pleased that so many companies are represented in this delegation. "But it is not just about the flow of goods. Rotterdam is pre-eminently suited as a site for distribution centres, sales offices, financial institutions and all kinds of other forms of activity even if they have no direct relation with transport and logistics. All these companies are warmly welcomed in Rotterdam," he said. Speaking at the press conference in Shanghai, Rotterdam Mayor Opstelten told those gathered that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Shanghai and Rotterdam showed that his delegation's visit was about more than just ports, trade and logistics. Mr Opstelten said that the signing of the MoU was important due to Shanghai's contribution to China's economy. "I believe this is important because no less than 25 per cent of China's GNP is earned here in Shanghai and the surrounding region," he said. Mr Opstelten also highlighted the need for co-ordinated joint security initiatives, which the mayor said had also been discussed with officials in Shanghai during their visit. "During this week we have widened the scope towards true multi-agency co-operation between Rotterdam and Shanghai in the field of crisis and disaster management," the mayor said. The mayor also acknowledged the existing strong ties between Shanghai and Rotterdam calling them "sister-cities", as the two shared 27 years of close, warm and rewarding ties.

The Hong Kong-based airline is understood to be close to finalising a deal under discussion since 2004 with Dragonair's parent, China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC), to consolidate Cathay's shareholding in the unlisted carrier, Hong Kong's The Standard newspaper said on June 5. Cathay, which owns 17.8 per cent of Dragonair, is expected to buy out stakes held in the airline by Swire Pacific, CITIC Pacific and CNAC through a combination of cash and share issues, it said. At the same time Air China, which owns 66.36 per cent of CNAC, was tipped to acquire shares in Cathay, becoming its third-largest shareholder after Swire Pacific and CITIC Pacific, the paper said. CNAC holds a 43.29-per-cent stake in Dragonair, while CITIC Pacific holds 28.5 per cent and Swire Pacific 7.71 per cent. Rumours of a reshuffle have circulated for at least a year, though earlier reports had spoken of Cathay acquiring only 54 per cent of Dragonair, without referring to CNAC disposing of its holding. Industry sources cited by Reuters said they were confident that this time it was the real thing. "With Cathay's feed from around the world and Dragonair's access to China, you'll have the making of a hugely powerful carrier," said Richard Pinkham, Singapore-based consultant with the Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation, quoted by the news agency.
