DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 118 Het Maritiem Museum in Rotterdam heeft vijf achttiende eeuwse VOC-zeekaarten gekregen. Schenker is het Erasmus Center for early modern studies.
SEARCH GOES ON FOR TANKER CREWMAN Search and rescue officials in New Zealand are continuing their search for a Chinese seaman lost overboard in Wellington Harbour on Monday. The crewman fell from the tanker Formosa while lowering the boarding ladder to allow a pilot to leave the vessel. Maritime authorities in New Zealand have launched an investigation into the incident and are currently checking safety standards on board the vessel.

PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 4

Turkey seizes military equipment from ship
Turkish coastal security agents have seized six military vehicles, heavy artillery and spare parts from a ship heading for the United Arab Emirates. The officers of the Scan Bothnia misreported the contents of two containers as general merchandise, the Anadolu News Agency reported. After the military equipment was removed from the ship, it was ordered to remain anchored in the port of Derince. The port is about 60 miles east of Istanbul on the Gulf of Izmit. Turkey requires all vessels passing through the Turkish straits, which connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, to report all explosive or otherwise dangerous cargo. Local officials in the Kocaeli District have reported the seizure to the national government in Ankara, which will decide whether to sanction the ship or its owners.
Man water-skis behind cruise liner A German man water-skied behind a cruise liner to win a bet. The stunt was recorded by a German TV show after a viewer wrote in disputing an earlier claim on the show that it would be theoretically possible to water-ski behind an ocean-going cruise ship. Reporter Dirk Gion, 40, took up the challenge "to prove it could be done". He was brought up to the correct velocity by a speedboat and then switched over to a line pulled by the 575 foot cruiser MS Deutschland. Mr Gion managed to stay afloat behind the vessel as it travelled at 17 knots for over five minutes.

3 rescued, 1 missing after boat capsizes in Queens inlet Three people were rescued and a fourth was missing after their boat capsized Tuesday evening in an inlet near the Atlantic Ocean. The group had set sail from a Brooklyn marina to go fishing near the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. Although waters were initially calm, the 22-foot craft hit rough seas and started taking on water, causing it to capsize, police said. Three members of the group _ two men and a 12-year-old boy _ were able to hang onto the boat until a passing boater pulled them to safety. They were treated on the scene and released, said police spokesman Lt. John Grimpel. Police and Coast Guard divers spent Tuesday evening searching for the fourth person, a 36-year-old man. The effort was expected to continue on Wednesday. Police were investigating the incident.
Greenpeace Ship Banned from St Kitts The Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise has been refused entry to St Kitts, where it was due to arrive two days ago, ahead of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting that will begin on Friday. No official reason has been given to the environmental organisation, despite repeated requests. The Artic Sunrise, which was one of two ships that confronted the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean at the beginning of the year, was due to be part of Greenpeace's lobbying work at the meeting, which could see the Japanese led pro-whaling countries seize control of the IWC. New Zealander, Phil Lloyd who was bosun onboard the Esperanza during last summer's Southern Ocean whale hunt, is now onboard the Artic Sunrise near St Kitts. "We are shocked that St Kitts has banned the Arctic Sunrise and can only assume that the government of Japan has convinced the St Kitts authorities to prevent us from entering in the hope that our criticism of whaling will be silenced," said Phil Lloyd. The St Kitts meeting of the IWC could see the reversal of many years of whale protection and conservation, with strong indications that the Japanese government will have bought out enough votes to take control of the Commission. In that event it is anticipated that Greenpeace will be ejected from the meeting, after having had its observer status revoked, secret ballots will be introduced and the Japanese "scientific" whaling programme will be endorsed by the Commission.

Salvor Sailors to Dive on Submarine Resting Site A rescue and salvage ship USS Salvor (ARS 52) and divers of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1 arrived June 11 at the site in the Gulf of Thailand presumed to be the resting place of the WWII–era USS Lagarto (SS 371) and its crew. In May 2005, British diver Jamie MacLeod reported finding Lagarto, which was last seen May 3, 1945. On May 8, 2006, MacLeod joined U.S. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force Commander Rear Adm. Jeffrey Cassias and families of crew members who served aboard Lagarto at a memorial service in the crew’s honor hosted by the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wis. Over the next several days the divers from Salvor and MDSU-1 will conduct diving operations in an attempt to confirm MacLeod’s discovery, in keeping with a longstanding Navy practice of independently verifying such finds when possible. Salvor is in the midst of the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise series in Southeast Asia and with the agreement of the Royal Thai navy – a CARAT exercise partner – was able to incorporate the Lagarto operation into the Thailand phase.
“We greatly appreciate the willingness of the Royal Thai navy to integrate this important real-world operation into the CARAT Thailand exercise plan,” said Lt. Cmdr. John Howard, Salvor’s commanding officer. “The crew of Salvor is especially honored to participate in an operation that may identify the final resting place of Lagarto and pay tribute to her brave crew.” Salvor will utilize MDSU-1’s fly away mixed-gas system for the dives, as the wreck sits in approximately 225 feet of water. “This is a challenging dive, and any opportunity we have to utilize this system is great PSi-Daily Shipping News

DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 118 training and experience for the crew,” Howard said. The training benefit is furthered by the presence of a Royal Thai navy liaison officer on board. “Sharing experiences and expertise is what CARAT is all about,” Howard said. On May 16, the mine countermeasures ship USS Patriot (MCM 7), which was operating in the area, conducted sonar operations at the location provided by MacLeod and provided its findings to Salvor. The information from Patriot allowed Salvor to accurately moor over the wreck without endangering the site. The Salvor crew has been working closely with the Naval Historical Center (NHC) in preparation for this operation, and the divers’ findings, including underwater digital photography, will be provided to NHC electronically as quickly as possible for analysis. While at the site, Salvor’s crew intends to conduct a traditional bell tolling memorial ceremony in honor of the Lagarto crew. Salvor is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and has a crew of approximately 100. CARAT is a three-month series of bilateral exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand designed to enhance the operational cohesiveness of the participants.

The Sirocco, a yacht with African influences
Photo : Jan Labree © YN 12947 Sirocco, named after the south wind that blows hot, dry air from the Sahara to the north, was launched on 18 April. It’s not just the name but the whole interior of this 47-meter semi-displacement, custom-built yacht that gives Sirocco a distinctly African ambience. Wooden floors, the use of natural stone, leather and makassar wood, combined with a sophisticated use of earth tones, and very unusual, exclusive tiles give this yacht a look all of its own. In another characteristic touch, the owner’s cabin is situated on the wheelhouse deck with direct access to the outside deck. The sundeck has a gym, and the TV room is on the main deck. Cosco, KKK, Yang Ming, and Hanjin to expand joint routes China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co (Cosco), Hanjin Shipping Co and two other container lines agreed to expand the routes on which they cooperate to broaden the number of destinations they can offer customers. The CKYH alliance, which includes Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp and Japan's Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd, will also increase cooperation on regional feeder routes and in operating terminals, the group said in a statement yesterday. The alliance cooperates on 13 routes between Asia and Europe, 19 between Asia and North America and four between Europe and North America. Alliances help shipping lines share space on each other's vessels and offer services to destinations they wouldn't have on their own, helping them avoid extra costs from running more ships. Container shipping companies face rising costs as oil prices trade at record levels, eroding profits. The price of 380 Centistoke Bunker Fuel, used by ships, surged as much as 27 per cent this year to a record US$365 a ton on May 3 in Singapore, according to Bloomberg data. Shipping lines carry about 80 per cent of world trade. The group also plans to review the ports they use especially on the Asia-Europe trade lanes, they said. A record number of vessels are being delivered by global shipyards this year, undermining efforts by shipping lines to raise freight rates. Cosco's container line unit operates the world's biggest container ships between Asia and Europe. Average freight rates for 20-foot containers moved to Europe from Asia in the fourth quarter fell 7 per cent to about US$1,709.

DP World, Tianjin Port to build US$500m terminal DP World, the world's third-biggest container port operator, signed an agreement to develop a US$500 million terminal at the north-eastern Chinese harbour of Tianjin. DP World will jointly build a 140-hectare terminal with Tianjin Port Group Co Ltd, the Dubai, United Arab Emiratesbased company said in a statement yesterday. The terminal, the companies' second partnership in Tianjin, will have capacity to handle 2.2 million standard 20-foot containers a year when it begins operations in 2011. 'China is a key market for DP World and its customers, and this agreement underlines our commitment to investment in the country,' DP World vice-chairman Jamal bin Thaniah said in the statement. Exports from China, the world's fourth-largest economy, rose 26 per cent in the first four months of the year. About 80 per cent of world trade moves by sea. Tianjin is China's fifth-largest container-handling port and currently has 13 berths. Its cargo volume rose 26 per cent to 4.8 million standard 20-foot boxes last year, according to Containerisation International. Dubai government-owned DP World controls 52 port terminals in 30 countries. The company paid CSX Corp US$1.15 billion in December 2004 for terminals in Hong Kong and South America, and bought London-based Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co for US$6.8 billion in February. DP World agreed to sell P&O's interests in six US ports after US lawmakers threatened to block the takeover as a threat to national security.

AIRCRAFT / AIRPORT NEWS Singapore Airlines koopt twintig Boeings
