CULTURE AND SPORTS As the records of Bruno of Schaumburg, the Bishop of Olomouc, say – the Town of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm was established in 1267 on a green field. The Middle-Age history of the town is reminded by ruins of a castle that is situated on a near hill since the 13th century. Step by step, it was enlarged and together with Helfštýn and Hukvaldy Castles served for protection of Moravia against Hungarian invaders. In the course of time, the noblemen of Kravaře, the Cimburks or Peter – the Duke of Transylvania – were the owners of the castle. This stone residence situated close to the town was seized also by the robber baron Jan of Messenberk. The castle was destroyed in the 15th century when the Emperor Ferdinand ordered to demolish the castle because of the robbers. Since the Mid 19th century, Rožnov is known as a sanitarium where patients from all over the Europe used to come. Respiratory, pulmonary and heart diseases have been cured here. Sigmund Freud, a physician and a founder of psychoanalysis, was also among its guests. Except fresh air, bathtub therapy or electric therapy, also heated „žinčica“ (sheep's whey) that the local shepherds from the surrounding sheep-cots were bringing to the town was used for curing. Currently, the town population is almost 20,000 people. Rožnov became renowned especially thanks to its Wallachian OpenAir Museum. Wallachian Open-Air Museum, Palackého 147, Rožnov p. Local Wooden Little Town consists of a group of wooden country buildings moved from the Wallachian region to the environment of a city park. In the local amphitheatre, performances of ethnic ensembles are annually held within the frame of the all-year-round folklore festival Wallachian Year. The Wallachian Village and Mill Valley were moved to the adjacent sidehill, forming a live part of the Museum: technical structures, a sawmill and a hammer-mill are still in operation, traditional crops are grown on the fields of the Wallachian Village and local people breed poultry and stock. The Wallachian Museum is the oldest and biggest museum of this kind in Europe. It was established in 1925 thanks to Jaroněk brothers and is visited by more than half a million of visitors each year.
