WEDHAR RIYADI Wedhar Riyadi was born in Yogyakarta, in 1980. He studied at ISI Yogyakarta lives and works in Yogyakarta. Apart from the academic world, he is also involved in environmental activities. He was involved in the Daging Tumbuh and Apotik Komik communities, and worked on a number of murals in Yogyakarta. Wedhar is part of a group of Indonesia artists who developed work strongly influenced by the era of change, that being when the influnece of Japan began to be felt on many forms of entertainment: anime comics, Nintendo games, martial arts stories and so on, as well a the point when information technology began to have a strong influence in Indonesia . This influence interacted with Riyadi’s own Yogyakartan culture. This can be seen through his work, which reflects a confluence between what he has experienced as a Javanese Indonesian - the products of “export” from cartoons and comic book superheroes from outside ‘displacing’ the position of local comics; computer technology; and many other instances. These popular images, later icons, became an inseparable part of his work. Sometimes he creates his own comic book characters with a distinctive style using strong lines, wide eyed expressions, repetition, many bright colours and thick outlines. The expressions of Wedhar’s comic figures seem proud, yet still gloomy, with nuances of horror, like monsters. Wedhar’s comics draw the eye because there are usually multiple stories – in one area of a picture we find several figures overlapping. It’s crowded. In this style of comic he often makes collages including well known figures, such as Bruce Lee. Other than comics Riyadi also makes product illustrations and designs, and is active in various environmental, social, political and cultural projects. He is vocal about the social situation around him, working through various art mediums, not just comics. He also makes videos, installations, animations, posters, stickers, toys, t-shirts and more.
