World Foot Health Awareness Month – 17 mei 2008
Special Olympics Inc. werd opgericht in 1968 door Mevrouw Eunice Kennedy-Shriver. Vandaag de dag is de beweging actief in meer dan 160 landen, verspreid over de zes continenten.
– Nationale dag van de Podologie – Opendeur bij alle Belgische Podologen
Het is de belangrijkste beweging voor aangepaste sporttraining en sportwedstrijden voor personen met een mentale handicap en tevens de enige organisatie die door het Internationaal Olympisch Comité gemachtigd is gebruik te maken van het woord "Olympics" in haar naam. Special Olympics Belgium maakt deel uit van deze internationale organisatie. Jaarlijks organiseert het de Nationale Special Olympics Spelen die afwisselend plaatsvinden in Wallonië, Brussel en Vlaanderen Hiervoor verzamelen gedurende drie dagen tijdens het Onze Heer Hemelvaartweekend zo’n 2.700 atleten, 1.200 coaches en 1.000 vrijwilligers. Naast deze Nationale Spelen organiseert Special Olympics Belgium tal van andere sportactiviteiten en trainingsstages voor personen met een mentale handicap, en neemt het deel aan de Special Olympics Wereld Winter- en Zomerspelen. Special Olympics Belgium geniet d e besc herming van het Belgisch Olympisc h en Interfed eraal Comi té .
