AIFA Night
FUN DAY IN MAY
27 Jun 09
It was a fun day in the sun at Lake Ginninderra for our AIFA picnic on Saturday, 2 May. See the president’s message below for more details and also page 5 for more photos. Also, in this newsletter we remind members of the upcoming AIFA Night on Saturday, 27 June and provide some other AIFA news. Additionally, check out our ‘AIFA Member’s Profile’ on Bpk and Ibu Supomo, page 4.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members Our first event of the year, the AIFA picnic for a walk/picnic at Ginninderra Peninsula District Park on Saturday 2 May was a great success and well attended. Members and their children enjoyed the perfect Canberra autumn weather in a picturesque setting and many took the opportunity to walk/ stroll before lunch. We have had great feedback, including from the children who participated in lots of activities, including an out-of-season Easter egg hunt. Thank you to everyone who put in a lot of time to make this event possible and of course to all members and guests who came. We have had a number of new members, some of whom came to the picnic. A very warm welcome to those new members. Australia-Indonesia Families Association • Newsletter • June 2009

At the picnic we had the launch of the AIFA library, which is coordinated by Ade, a member of the Committee. We already have lots of magazines, books and DVDs available for members to borrow. It was good to see the level of interest at the picnic, where several people became the very first users of the AIFA library! Contact Ade if you would like to see what is available, and also if you would like to donate magazines, books, CDs/DVDs. Late last month one of our younger AIFA members, Sofia Ridwan, organized a charity movie screening for an orphanage in Yogya, where her younger sister Amy Ridwan was volunteering. The event managed to collect more than $650 and was attended by a number of AIFA members. The funds will pay for equipment much needed by the orphanage. Thank you to everyone who donated. AIFA members are involved in a wide range of endeavours — many of which would be of interest to other members. If you have a story about an AIFA member’s achievements that you would like to share, please send it to Shinta, our Secretary, for inclusion in our newsletter. Jack Frost has now made his appearance in Canberra and with the cold weather most people are retreating into their warm homes and blankets. On the bright side, this is also the season when traditionally AIFA has its annual dinner. This year is no different. The Committee (dengan bantuan Ibu Supomo and others!) has been very busy putting together the AIFA Night, and it promises to be a lively affair. What better way to escape the cold than to enjoy good food and entertainment with other AIFA members! There are limited seats, and tickets are selling fast. Details of the event are in this newsletter — make sure you secure your place early. In the previous newsletter, the Committee proposed a number of events that we could organise for the rest of the year. We would like your input/suggestions/feedback on the events and activities that you would like to see happen. So contact any Committee member or post a message to
[email protected] with your thoughts and ideas. Your active input will help to keep AIFA vibrant and relevant to you. Till next time. Salam Eddie Ridwan

recent sojourn in Jakarta. Cheers, Amanda
Happy Birthday A very happy birthday to the following members in June: Mita Pender (7 June), Dian Wardrobe (8 June), Bill Gresham (9 June).

Indonesian Independence Day Event — August 2009 As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the Indonesian Embassy usually organizes sporting events involving the various Indonesian community groups in Canberra. The sports competitions are hotly contested and gives bragging rights to winners till the following year. But win or lose, the event is another excellent opportunity to kumpul-kumpul and to strengthen our ties with other Indonesian communities in Canberra. Traditionally AIFA has been able to field a strong women’s volleyball team. We want to maintain this and also to see if we can improve on last year. This year we hope to put together women's and men’s
