TRANSIT 2012 en de World Music Days Samen met de International Society of Contemporary Music Flemisch Section (ISCM-Vlaanderen) en zowat alle Belgische nieuwe muziek collega’s organiseert TRANSIT dit jaar de World Music Days. Deze ‘wereldexpo’ van de nieuwe muziek vindt elk jaar plaats in een ander land. Meer dan zestig landen uit alle continenten zijn vertegenwoordigd met minstens één compositie, goed voor een lijst met 500 partituren. TRANSIT selecteerde vijftien composities uit Denemarken, Roemenië, Estland, Japan, Duitsland, Oekraïne, Canada, Litouwen, Noorwegen, Israël, Italië, Finland, Oostenrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Rusland. Bovenop de avontuurlijkheid, tegendraadsheid en innovatie eigen aan TRANSIT, voegen deze vijftien ISCM-composities daar nog een schep verscheidenheid aan toe. Verder staan er veertien extra composities op het programma: o.a. negen creaties waarvan zes van Vlaamse componisten. Matthew Shlomowitz en Shila Anaraki herwerken de succesvolle Letter Pieces tot een theatrale voorstelling. De klankinstallatie Honeymoon van Niels Roensholdt kan doorlopend bezocht worden maar slechts door één persoon tegelijkertijd. Spannend wordt het interactieve online concert waarop musici en publiek in Leuven en ’s-Hertogenbosch in dialoog gaan. Deze wereldexpo van de nieuwe muziek schreeuwt om een uitzonderlijk slotconcert: het Ensemble Intercontemporain speelt in grote bezetting creaties van Enno Poppe en Luc Brewaeys. TRANSIT 2012 and World Music Days This year TRANSIT, along with the International Society of Contemporary Music, Flemish Section (ISCM-Flanders) and virtually all of our Belgian new-music colleagues, are organizing the World Music Days. This ‘world’s fair’ of new music is held in a different country every year. More than sixty countries from every continent are represented with at least one composition. This produces a list of 500 scores, of which fifteen will be heard. TRANSIT selected compositions from Denmark, Rumania, Estonia, Japan, Germany, Ukraine, Canada, Lithuania, Norway, Israel, Italy, Finland, Austria, Great Britain and Russia. As usual with TRANSIT, these compositions are adventurous, against the grain and innovative, and this year, they’re even more diverse than usual. Also on the programme are fourteen additional compositions: nine premieres, six of which are by Flemish composers. Matthew Shlomowitz and Shila Anaraki have reworked their successful Letter Pieces (2010). The sound installation Honeymoon by Niels Roensholdt will run continually, but for an audience of only one person each time. We also have an exciting interactive online concert in which musicians and the audiences in Leuven and ’s-Hertogenbosch dialogue with each other. This world expo of new music simply screams for an exceptional closing concert, and here it is: Ensemble Intercontemporain will play premieres for large ensemble by Enno Poppe and Luc Brewaeys.

De klankinstallatie/interactieve digitale micro opera Honeymoon neemt je mee op een bijzondere ‘huwelijksreis’. Je fungeert zelf als deel van een koppel dat van een torenhoog gebouw springt en een quasi eindeloze reis beleeft langsheen de verschillende verdiepingen tot de onvermijdelijke crash. Het waarom blijft onbeantwoord. De val wordt zowel muzikaal als virtueel tot in het detail uitgewerkt en bezorgt je een unieke ervaring. Zo beleefde je opera nog nooit. This sound installation/interactive digital micro opera will take you along on a very special ‘honeymoon’. You’ll be one member of a couple who jumps off a skyscraper, experiencing a seemingly endless journey past all the building’s different floors until the inevitable crash. The question ‘why’ remains unanswered. The fall is worked out down to the smallest details, both musically and virtually. This will be opera like you’ve never experienced it before.

Het openingsconcert zet de toon voor de WMD-editie van TRANSIT met componisten die in gevarieerde componeerstijlen lands- en zelfs continentsgrenzen overstijgen. Mihaela Vosnagian (Roemenië) speelt ‘het spel van de onschuldigen’ in een werk dat de kracht en de poëzie van Luigi Nono uitstraalt. Tatjana Kozlova (Estland) geeft de begrippen melodie en polyfonie een nieuwe invulling. Hikari Kiyama (Japan) prestenteert een kletterend festivalstuk op de rand van de noise en punk. Te midden van dit internationale gezelschap positioneert Serge Verstockt (België) zich met nieuw werk voor zijn eigen Champ d’Action. Dit oudste ensemble voor nieuwe muziek in Vlaanderen blijft door zijn experimentele en subversieve koers eeuwig jong van geest! The opening concert will set the tone of the WMD edition of TRANSIT, with composers whose varied compositional styles go far beyond national or even continental boundaries. Mihaela Vosnagian (Rumania) plays ‘the game of the innocents’ in a work that radiates the power and the poetry of Luigi Nono. Tatjana Kozlova (Estonia) will interpret the concepts of melody and polyphony in a new way. Hikari Kiyama (Japan) will present an energetic festival piece on the edge of the noise and punk genres. Letter Piece Company verbindt beweging met klank, voert lichtregie, trekt kostuums aan en ensceneert met ludieke inslag. In van A to Zzz banen choreografe Shila Anaraki, componist Matthew Shlomowitz en drie musici zich een weg door het alfabet. Elke letter vertegenwoordigt een idee en kan naar een persoon (F = Freddy Mercury), een onderwerp (P = positions in space) of een concept (O = outwards) verwijzen. Of meer nog: het idee kan leiden tot een spel van beweging en muziek met handen, voeten, armen, monden, benen… altijd fris, origineel en humoristisch. Het spelplezier vliegt er dan ook af bij Letter Piece Company en dat is heerlijk om mee te maken. Letter Piece Company combines movement and sound, design lighting, puts on costumes and stage pieces with an eye to having fun. In A to Zzz, choreographer Shila Anaraki, composer Matthew Shlomowitz and three musicians work their way through the alphabet. From B for ballet to V for variation... Each letter represents an idea and can refer to a person (F = Freddy Mercury), a subject (P = positions in space) or a concept (O = outwards). Even more so, every idea or object can spark an interplay of movement and music with hands, feet, arms, mouths, legs and more… but always fresh, original and funny. You can just see how much Letter Piece Company enjoys their work!

Guy De Bièvre gooit zich in een muzikaal avontuur met amateurmuzikanten van alle leeftijden. Het ensemble bestaat uit een heterogene groep van akoestische en elektrische gitaren. Elke muzikant bespeelt bovendien één bijkomende, zelfgekozen geluidsbron. Het belooft een mobiele, open partituur te worden, met ruimte voor improvisatie en creatieve beslissingen. Guy De Bièvre will dive into a musical adventure with amateur musicians of all ages. The ensemble is a mixed group of acoustic and electric guitars. Each musician also plays one other sound source of their choice. This promises to be a mobile, open score, with lots of room for improvisation and creative choices.

Zes uiteenlopende werken voor piano uit zes verschillende landen uitgevoerd door één solist? Daar past maar één naam bij: Ian Pace, berucht voor zijn fenomenale techniek en interpretatievermogen van nieuwe muziek. Harald Muenz (Duitsland) ondergraaft op ironische wijze de ‘consonantie’ met spannende stiltes en mechanische figuren. Maxym Kolomiiets (Oekraïne) bezorgt een hypercomplexe partituur waarin hij de beperkingen van de pianist afwijst. Herman Vogt (Noorwegen) stelt in zijn Etudes het schematische karakter van de pianostudie én van de compositietechniek in vraag. De speelse verkenning van het klavier door Heather Hindman (Canada) leidt al snel tot verwarring en de hemelse harp-arpeggio’s en nijdige percussie van Santa Buss (Litouwen) evoceren een verrassende Oosterse klankwereld. André Laporte (België) – hij was jarenlang voorzitter van ISCM/ België – mag op deze World Music Days niet ontbreken. Six diverse works for piano from six different countries, performed by a single soloist? There’s only one name that fits the picture: Ian Pace, reputed for his phenomenal technique and ability to interpret new music. Harald Muenz (Germany) undermines ‘consonance’ in an ironic way with tense silences and mechanical figures. Maxym Kolomiiets (Ukraine) creates a hyper-complex score that admits no limitations of the pianist. Herman Vogt (Norway) questions the schematic nature of both the piano etude and compositional technique in his Etudes. Canadian composer Heather Hindman’s playful exploration of the keyboard quickly becomes a jumble, and the heavenly harp arpeggios and angry percussion of Santa Buss (Lithuania) evoke an unusual Oriental sound world. And it wouldn’t be the 2012 World Music Days without André Laporte (Belgium), former chairman of ISCM/Belgium for many years.

Arne Deforce in combinatie met hedendaagse muziek: dat is één al passie en gedrevenheid. Voeg daarbij het Centre Henri Pousseur, topleverancier van electronics in nieuwe muziek, en de perfecte match voor een subliem celloconcert staat op het podium. Vladimir Scolnic (Israël) houdt het nog puur akoestisch en exploreert de diepe klanken in de onderbuik van de cello. Daniele Venturi (Italië) en Raphael Cendo (Frankrijk) plaatsen luidsprekers rondom de concertzaal en laten de celloklanken langs alle kanten op je afkomen. Venturi: poëtisch en kleurrijk; Cendo: zoals altijd, overweldigend, intens en opzienbarend. Tim Vets (België), al jaar en dag gefascineerd door elektronische muziek en klankinstallaties, neemt op vraag van TRANSIT de uitdaging van de cello erbij. Het dubbeltalent Wieland Hoban (Engeland/Duitsland) legt een eigen poëtische tekst vast op tape die hij laat interageren met de cello. Combine Arne Deforce with contemporary music and you already have a pure passion and drive. Add the Centre Henri Pousseur, new music’s top supplier of electronics, and you have the perfect forces on stage for a sublime cello concert. Vladimir Scolnic (Israel) will keep it purely acoustic, exploring the deep sounds in the cello’s nether regions. Daniele Venturi (Italy) and Raphael Cendo (France) will position loudspeakers all around the concert hall so that the cello sounds come at you from all directions. Venturi: poetic and colourful; Cendo: as always, revelatory. Tim Vets (Belgium), fascinated for years by electronic music and sound installations, took up the challenge of the cello at TRANSIT’s request. The ‘double talent’ Wieland Hoban (England/Germany) will record his own poetic text on tape which he will have interact with the cello.

De WMD 2012 (en TRANSIT) gaan meer dan ooit ‘www’ met het Interactief online concert. Peter Swinnen (België) laat musici over de grenzen heen met elkaar samenspelen. Max Savikangas (Finland) verruimt het palet van de altviool met elektronische middelen. Hui Ye (Oostenrijk) keert de sfeer met zachte poëzie op basis van slechts 3 letters WEI, maar kleurt de menselijke stem met elektronische sinusklanken. De blokfluit en het klavecimbel ontpoppen zich tot verrassend boeiende gesprekspartners van de elektronica in een klankenzee van Fred Momotenko (Rusland) en in Chordis Canam van Roderik de Man (Nederland). Bart Vanhecke valt hier op met een poëtisch duo voor mezzosopraan en altfluit. The 2012 WMD (and TRANSIT) are going ‘world wide web’ more than ever with an Interactive online concert. Peter Swinnen (Belgium) will get musicians at two different locations to play together. Max Savikangas (Finland) expands the palette of the viola using electronic means. Hui Ye (Austria) will turn things around with gentle poetry based on only 3 letters (WEI), while colouring the human voice with electronic sine tones. The recorder and harpsichord will reveal themselves as able to converse amazingly well with electronics, in a sea of sound by Fred Momotenko (Russia) and in Chordis Canam by Roderik de Man (Netherlands). Met het Quatuor Danel (België) op het podium weet je vanaf de eerste boogstreek dat hedendaagse muziek en het traditionele strijkkwartet geen contradictio in terminis hoeft te zijn. Zo wekt de rijkdom van de experimentele strijkersklanken verbazing op in het poëtische strijkkwartet van Sergej Newski (Rusland). Richard Whalley’s (Engeland) ‘interlocking melodies’ keren steeds weer terug in gevarieerde vorm. Voorts is het uitkijken hoe Maarten Buyl (België) – vertrouwd met laptopinstallaties en andere alternatieve muziekvormen – dit traditionele genre gaat invullen. Jean-Luc Fafchamps (België) ten slotte zet de strijkers en de elektronica in een interactief spel en dat zorgt voor een uitgekiend en subtiel muzikaal raffinement. From the first moment you witness the Quatuor Danel (Belgium) put bows to strings, you realize that contemporary music and the traditional string quartet do not have to be a contradiction in terms. The wealth of experimental string sounds in the poetic string quartet by Sergej Newski (Russia) will surprise you. Richard Whalley’s (England) ‘interlocking melodies’ keep recurring in a varied form. Then watch how Maarten Buyl (Belgium) – at home with laptop installations and other alternative musical forms – interprets this traditional genre. educatief project / Educational project In de laatste week van augustus organiseert MATRIX Centrum voor Nieuwe Muziek samen met Nadar ensemble een Summer Academy voor nieuwsgierige jongeren tussen 14 en 18 jaar. Zes dagen lang wordt de jonge bende ondergedompeld in nieuwe (kunst)muziek in zijn breedste betekenis, met de muzikanten van Nadar als gidsen. Tijdens individuele lessen en workshops kamermuziek, ensemblespel en improvisatie werken ze rond verschillende facetten van de muziek van de 20ste en 21ste eeuw. Je hoort het resultaat van een bruisende week in het ongetwijfeld verfrissend educatief concert. In the last week of August, MATRIX Centre for New Music and Nadar ensemble will hold a Summer Academy for interested young people aged 14-18. For six days, the young players will immerse themselves in new music of all genres, music in its broadest sense, with the Nadar musicians as guides. During private lessons and workshops in chamber music, ensemble playing and improvisation, they will work with various facets of 20th and 21st-century music. Voor een grandioze finale staat één van de meest prestigieuze ensembles in nieuwe muziek op het podium: het Franse Ensemble intercontemporain (in sinfonietta bezetting!). En afsluiten doet EIC in stijl, met drie kleppers van componisten. Unsuk Chin (Zuid-Korea) brengt een hartverscheurende ode aan de verloren volkstraditie van het straattheater in haar heimat, Seoul. Luc Brewaeys (België) ziet een droom in vervulling gaan: ooit een groot werk te schrijven voor EIC. Voor Enno Poppe (Duitsland) is het een blij weerzien: voor het eerst in België tijdens TRANSIT 2001 behoort hij intussen – net als Brewaeys – tot de meest baanbrekende componisten van het ogenblik. Werk van veeleisende componisten in een uitvoering van EIC bekend om zijn precisie en fijngevoeligheid: mis dit niet! One of new music’s most prestigious ensembles, the French ‘Ensemble intercontemporain’ (playing in sinfonietta arrangement!) will be on stage to play a grand finale. Luc Brewaeys (Belgium) is at last having his dream of writing a large-scale work for EIC come true. For Enno Poppe (Germany) it’s a happy reunion: in Belgium for the first time during TRANSIT 2001, he (like Brewaeys) is now among the most prominent composers of today. De verschillende invalshoeken richten zich naar: 1. leerkrachten uit het DKO, 2. muziekleerkrachten uit het dagonderwijs, 3. studenten en docenten van verschillende lerarenopleidingen en 4. musici, componisten, artistiek directeurs in nieuwe muziek. Het programma bestaat uit: keynotes (o.a. door Richard McNichol!), panelgesprekken, projectpresentaties & best practices uit binnen- en buitenland, lezingen, workshops en een infomarkt.
