Foreword In the autumn of 2003, I was informed for the first time about the intention of Gasunie, Nuon and AkzoNobel to realise a natural gas buffer in the eastern part of the municipality of Veendam. The municipality was asked if it would cooperate, not only during the necessary licensing procedures but also in the dissemination of information to local residents. The plans were to realise the natural gas buffer between two ribbon villages – Ommelanderwijk and Zuidwending – with assertive inhabitants and a very active residents’ association.

Several residents’ evenings were arranged at which the consortium gave clear and informative details about the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed construction of, ultimately, ten caverns, and the erection of the corresponding buildings and installations. It has now become standard practice to provide information openly and frankly in this manner. The residents are fully informed about every new step. The benefit of proceeding in such a professional manner is that the inhabitants of Ommelanderwijk and Zuidwending have a positive image of the natural gas buffer.

About Gasunie Gasunie is a European gas infrastructure company. Its network is one of the largest high pressure gas pipeline grids in Europe, consisting of over 15,000 kilometres of pipeline in the Netherlands and northern Germany, dozens of installations, and approximately 1,300 gas receiving stations. The annual gas throughput totals approximately 125 billion cubic
metres. Gasunie is the first independent gas transport provider with a cross-border network in Europe, and offers transport services via its subsidiaries Gas Transport Services B.V. (GTS) in the Netherlands and Gasunie Deutschland in Germany. It also offers other services in the gas infrastructure field, including gas storage and LNG. The ambition of the Netherlands is to posi-
tion itself as the 'gas hub' of Northwest Europe. Because of its geographic location and its reliability, the Gasunie network plays a key role in the Northwest European ‘gas roundabout’. The formal owner of the storage facility is Gasunie Zuidwending B.V., a subsidiary of Gasunie.
The development of the natural gas market
De ontwikkeling van de aardgasmarkt
In 1959, natural gas was discovered in Slochteren, about 15 kilometres east of Groningen. At that time, this was the world’s largest natural gas field, with a volume of almost 3,000 billion m3. Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM), an operating company of Shell and Exxon, was appointed to produce the gas. Development was initiated very dynamically, and the first Slochteren gas, later generally known as Groningen gas, was delivered in December 1963. The natural gas consumption figures in the Netherlands rose quickly after the discovery of the Groningen gas field. In January 1963, 80% of homes were heated by coal boilers, 17% by oil boilers and 3% by gas boilers. Just two years later these percentages were 38%, 32% and 30% respectively. After approximately 20 years, the percentage of natural gas in the do-
mestic sector in the Netherlands was 98%, and the share of the primary energy supply was around 50%. Even today, no other country in the world approaches these figures. Since 1959, hundreds of billions of cubic metres of natural gas, spread across several gas fields, have been found under the North Sea and on the mainland. The Dutch natural gas policy, executed by the specially founded transport and trading company N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, initially focused on benefiting as quickly and as substantially as possible from the natural gas resources. One of the reasons for the urgency was the forecast that nuclear energy would boom within a few years, making fossil fuels superfluous. Consequently, roughly half of the natural gas production was exported to Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy. The success of the
Dutch export efforts encouraged other countries with gas deposits to enter the market, including the Soviet Union and Norway. A turning point in the energy policy occurred in the 1970s. People gradually realised that fossil fuels were becoming scarce and that nuclear energy was encountering greater opposition than anticipated. The environment had also become a major issue. From 1973, Dutch policy focused on building up a strategic energy reserve and handling energy and the environment efficiently. To maintain domestic gas supplies in the Netherlands at the required level, gas started to be imported in the late 1970s, initially from Norway and later also from Russia. In July 2001, the Interconnector was put into service: a pipeline between England and Belgium to transport British gas to Europe. To lessen the depend-

In 2005, in accordance with European legislation, Gasunie was split into two independent companies, Gasunie and Gasterra. Gasunie is now a gas infrastructure company, fully owned by the government. Since that time, the trade in gas has been driven by the new company Gasterra, owned by Shell, Exxon and the Dutch State. Gas storage In natural gas fields, the gas is under high pressure. When a gas field is produced, the pressure gradually declines. At some point, the pressure is no longer high enough to be able to respond adequately to a sudden increase in demand, for example during a period of extreme cold weather. Initially, the Groningen field discovered
in 1959 could supply a lot of gas per hour and production could be geared to the fluctuating demand. In the 1980s, measures were devised to use the gas from the Groningen field more sparingly wherever possible, including what is known as the small fields policy. Since then, whenever possible, the gas from small fields is the first to be used. The Groningen field has therefore acquired a balancing function. Nevertheless, the pressure in this field is still declining because of continuing extraction. In the meantime, although European gas production is falling, the demand for gas is still rising. This means that Dutch gas stocks have to be used efficiently and have to be supplemented more and more by gas imports from countries as far away as Norway, Russia, the Middle East and Africa. The figure above shows that the expected demand for gas in Europe in 2025 will exceed supply by more than 200 billion m3/year. This shortfall corresponds to five times the annual consumption in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, 92% of the gas demand and export commitments in 2010 will be covered by contracts (contracted domestic production plus contracted imports), 79% in 2015 and 70% in 2020. The shift from local production to international imports, combined with the decline in pressure in the gas fields, results in a change within the industry to a long-term strategy combined with a higher degree of shortterm flexibility that is used locally whenever possible. The solution to this is gas storage. In 1977, Gasunie opened a liquid natural gas (LNG) installation on the Maasvlakte. This ‘peak shaving installation’ is used at times of extra demand for gas to keep the supply of gas in Randstad (the Amsterdam/Rotterdam/The Hague/Utrecht conurbation) up to the required level. In the 1990s, gas storage facilities were created in depleted gas fields in the vicinity of Grijpskerk, Langelo and Alkmaar. In times of surplus (i.e. the summer) gas is injected under high

pressure from the transport network into the gas storage facilities; in the winter, when there is a higher demand for gas, gas is withdrawn and fed back into the network. These storage facilities are predominantly designed for the ‘seasonal’ storage of natural gas. Storage in salt caverns is especially well suited to absorbing imbalances between natural gas supply and demand. This is the rationale for the Zuidwending natural gas storage.
The storage of natural gas in salt caverns was first examined by Gasunie in 1986. However, for various reasons, preference was given at the time to the realisation of gas storage facilities in gas fields, as mentioned above. Gas storage in salt caverns has now taken off all over the world. In Germany alone, more than 175 salt caverns have been constructed for the storage of fossil fuels. The project in Zuidwending is unique in the Netherlands.
The role of natural gas in establishing a sustainable society As a reliable and stable energy source, natural gas will continue to play an important role in the European energy mix for many years. The unique flexibility with which natural gas can be deployed enables the fluctuating supply pattern of wind energy and solar energy to be counterbalanced effectively. In this way, the Netherlands will be able to use the investments in solar
and wind energy to best effect while maintaining a stable electricity supply. In addition – and at the same time – the greening of natural gas with green gas offers attractive and realistic prospects of sustainability.

Keeping us warm
Zuidwending natural gas storage – a tremendous boost for AkzoNobel “It provides us with new opportunities in an existing core activity that’s already a success” About AkzoNobel AkzoNobel is one of the world’s leading industrial concerns. The head office is located in Amsterdam. AkzoNobel makes and supplies a broad range of paints, coatings and specialist chemicals – in 2009 its total turnover was €13.9 billion. The company is the biggest paint and coating producer in the world. AkzoNobel has 57,000 employees in over 80 countries and dedicated to excellence and coming up with ‘Tomorrow’s Answers Today’. "Secondary use of caverns" “Salt caverns are attracting more and more attention. Particularly from commercial parties with an interest in the underground storage of high value gases and liquids. The Zuidwending natural gas storage – which involves extremely cordial and professional cooperation with Gasunie and Nuon – is enabling AkzoNobel to prove that our salt caverns are perfectly suited for the underground storage of natural gas,” says Peter Kuijpers, General Manager of AkzoNobel Salt. He sees a market that is very much on the move. “It’s important to be alert so you can respond to market trends. It’s an interesting way for AkzoNobel to extend the existing value chain by giving available and future salt caverns a second life. But there are other interesting
options besides natural gas, for example the storage of nitrogen and oil products.” Adequate AkzoNobel is contributing a great deal of knowledge and experience about leaching out caverns in underground salt deposits. The company has a salt extraction concession and an adequate infrastructure to bring brine to the surface and then process it. “We utilize the salt we extract. An extensive piping system takes the brine to the salt plants in Delfzijl, where we make pure and high grade salt. The salt is then used as the natural basic raw material for manufacturing chlorine and products derived from it, such as plastics and medicines. The extraction of salt in Delfzijl has provided the foundations for a unique supply chain of companies that make use of each other’s products and residual materials. And all that is based on salt and chlorine,” continues Peter Kuijpers. Tremendous boost The creation of salt caverns in general and those for the Zuidwending natural gas storage in particular has resulted in extra activities in Delfzijl. “An important message for the market. This extension of our value chain is a tremendous boost for our company,” says Jaap Mulder, Plant Manager of
AkzoNobel’s salt plants in Delfzijl. The benefits of deciding to invest in a new plant in Delfzijl are crystal clear to him. “A fourth salt plant - that’s positive, innovative and sustainable all at the same time. Add to that the high grade salt, appropriate harbor facilities, and good connections with Germany, Scandinavia and the United States. In other words, we’re really on the map.” Partnerships Entering this new market is very moreish. AkzoNobel has spread its wings in this area since the start of the Zuidwending natural gas storage project. The project in Zuidwending itself is entering a second phase. Elsewhere work is going on to make a salt cavern that is still in use suitable for storing nitrogen. Advanced preparations are also being made to store oil products in salt caverns in Hengelo. “A splendid example of AkzoNobel's slogan. We’re giving our customers tomorrow's answers today. We’re setting up partnerships with customers - sustainable cooperation through which we’re making our policy of reusing salt caverns a practical reality. It provides us with new opportunities in an existing core activity that’s already a success,” concludes Peter Kuijpers.

Underground gas storage Zuidwending
Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending
Constructing the Zuidwending natural gas storage Feasibility studies In 2001 Nuon and Gasunie decided to jointly study the potential for storing gas in salt caverns. All studies were oriented to the same salt extraction area of AkzoNobel in Zuidwending. It was therefore natural for the parties to collaborate in the development of the natural gas storage. Feasibility studies were carried out from 2001 to 2003. DEEP Underground Engineering investigated the cavern part (subsurface), while engineering company Jacobs Nederland BV made an initial design for the gas installation. A survey was also made of the necessary licences. Although the geology of the Zuidwending salt dome had already been interpreted reasonably well by TNO and Shell, and AkzoNobel had experience of brine extraction since the 1960s, this aspect was examined further. The geology of this salt deposit is described in the chapter „Geological Exploration“ on page 23.
Further elaboration of the studies Based on the results of these studies a decision was made in mid-2003 to elaborate the project. Until the end of 2005 attention was paid to the following topics, among others: • cavern design by DEEP. • rock mass stability analysis by the Institut für Gebirgsmechanik (IfG), along with land subsidence analysis, carried out by the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) • basic engineering of the water and brine pumping station for leaching caverns, by DEEP. • basic engineering of the gas installations by FLUOR Nederland • basic engineering of the electrotechnical facilities by Nuon Tecno • partially changing the existing zoning plan • environmental impact report and environmental licence application by Oranjewoud and Kema • preparing building licence applications
• preparing the European tender procedures • ordering materials and services with a long delivery time, such as compressors, high-voltage transformers, high-voltage cables and drilling plant. The national and local authorities, as well as the local residents, were closely involved in the entire process of realising the natural gas storage . Investment decision and realisation of the project At the beginning of 2006, the investment decision was taken to go ahead with the project and the Zuidwending team was formed. In the period 2006 – 2010 this team was responsible for all the project activities and the contacts with the contractors and sub- contractors, including: • construction of the water and brine pumping station by Heijmans/Controlec/Vos
• installation of two high-voltage cables from the Meeden substation to Zuidwending by Essent / TenneT, and installation of two high-voltage transformers by Nuon Tecno (Liandon) • installation of platforms by Heijmans and drilling eight wells by ITAG • parallel leaching of the four caverns by DEEP./AkzoNobel • detail engineering by Mott McDonald, later completed by CB&I Lummus • construction site preparation, the first phase (civil engineering) and the construction of the compressor buildings by Visser & Smit Bouw • construction of the gas control installation by main contractor BAM, with many subcontractors including Hak, Cegelec, Cofely and Croon • first gas fill of the four caverns by DEEP. Dozens of service contractors were also involved in the various parts of the project, including Reijm, SOCON, BPC, UGS, Weatherford and Halliburton. beginning of 2010. The construction of the gas control installation started in mid-2007. The timetable was devised in such a way that two of the five compressors could be used from March 2010 for the first gas fill of the four caverns. This process involves using natural gas to displace the brine still present in the caverns. During this gas fill period, which takes nine months, work on the other installations, such as the natural gas dispatching plant, was continued and completed.
Timetable The water and brine pumping station was constructed in 2006/2007 and the cavern platforms and the water and brine pipes were laid during the same period. Drilling the wells, followed by leaching the caverns, took place between the beginning of 2007 and the

tended to each own two of the caverns. The gas installations were designed in such a way that each of the companies could operate their caverns virtually independently of one another. However, it gradually became clear that storage of high-calorific gas was also desirable, and would therefore
require another gas installation. Consequently, the two parties agreed that Gasunie would take over phase 1 of the project in its entirety at the end of 2009.Eventually, the Gasunie installation will be expanded with extra compression capacity and up to two new caverns.
Leaching wellhead on well A Uitloogputmond op put A
An extra complication was that a second well had to be drilled in connection with the required high injection and extraction flow rates. This was complicated, especially at the beginning, before there was a connection between the two wells.
An interesting aspect during the last workovers (preparing the caverns for the gas operations) was the design and construction of a special tower allowing welding and other work on the wells to be carried out in a shielded environment. Building this rig was worthwhile because identical work had to be carried out successively on all eight wells. An interesting feature is that the workover rig is composed of conventional stackable ocean-going containers, so the tower can be transported
quickly and can be erected or dismantled in one day. See photo. More technical details of the cavern realisation work are given further down in this brochure.
Gas installations A gas installation is needed to be able to inject natural gas into the caverns and withdraw it out again. The process is explained further in the diagram below. Gas in the Gasunie transport network
Caverns - phase 1 The four caverns that were leached in the first phase of this project each have a geometric volume of around 600,000 m3. This is well above the original target of 500,000 m3. From a geological perspective few problems occurred during leaching. deformed

Gasunie zouden ieder twee cavernes in bezit krijgen.

flows through a pipeline to the gas installation. There the gas pressure is raised by a compressor to a maximum of around 160 bar. Because of the increase in pressure, the temperature of the gas rises as well. The gas is therefore cooled by air coolers to approximately 50°C and it then flows along a buried pipeline to the cavern. The pressure in the cavern is between 90 and 180 bar at normal operating pressure. When gas from the cavern is needed,

Project description
Most of the salt deposits known from the north-eastern regions of the Netherlands are primarily of Permian age. About 260 million years ago, Permian salt was deposited in a restricted inland basin, called the Zechstein Basin, that stretched from northern Britain, across the North Sea and through the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany to Poland. Over many millions of years, the bedded salt deposited in the Permian was mobilised into a large number of pillows and domes, many of which are found in the eastern part of the Netherlands. A salt dome is a complex, plugshaped or mushroom-shaped geological structure built up of rock salt (NaCl) and other evaporites (such as carbonates and sulphates) all coexisting in a strongly folded structure, that has pierced the overlying rocks and risen up to depths of commonly shallower than 1,000 m below ground level. Usually salt domes have an
overlying caprock which is a residual rock of non-soluble components that was left behind after the dissolution of the Permian evaporites by circulating groundwater many millions of years ago. The deposition of those chemical sediments was and still is associated with distinctive environmental conditions existing during prolonged periods with hot and arid climates, and large quantities of salt-rich lake water or sea water – such as prevailed during the Permian (Zechstein Group). The chemical compounds contained in sea water crystallise out in the order of their solubility in water. This deposits a rock formation with a characteristic sequence of layers which is mainly composed of rock salt, but also of potash salts, anhydrite, carbonate and claystone. In this way, up to seven successive evaporitic cycles were formed which can be distinguished from one another. The second oldest cycle called the Zechstein
2 or Stassfurt Formation is the thickest and most suitable deposit for solution mining. The upward movement of the originally horizontally deposited evaporites resulted in complicated internal folding of the different beds, with possibly increased primary bed thicknesses or, vice versa, parts of the sequence reduced in thickness or even completely thinned out. The mechanisms of salt 'flow' and the behaviour of the different rocks involved, means that the stratigraphically older formations are generally found in the central part of a salt dome, with the younger strata left behind at the margins of the structure. Hence, rock salt and other evaporite sediments, like anhydrite, clay or potassium-magnesium salts belonging to the younger Zechstein formations, may occur at the edges of the salt dome. These types of sediments could have an impact on the leaching

Geological exploration of the Zuidwending salt dome

The main priority of the geological interpretation is therefore to understand the internal structure of such a salt body, i.e. the spatial distribution of the different types of salt and salt units, and to discover zones of the purest possible form of salt, because only very pure rock salt is suitable for constructing caverns.
The Zuidwending salt dome is located in the Zechstein Basin 3 km east of the village of Veendam, which lies to the south-east of the city of Groningen. In map view, the Zuidwending dome has a length of roughly 10 km with a maximum width of 3 km. The bow-shaped contour with the central constriction suggests that the larger Zuidwending structure is an amalgamation of two individual domes, each following a different structural trend: while the 'Zuidwending South' dome has a NESW orientation, the 'Zuidwending North' dome has an E-W alignment. The Zuidwending salt dome was formed out of salt and associated evaporite sediments of significant thickness during the Permian Zechstein period. Intensive salt movements resulted in the steep inclination of the salt strata and broad accumulations.
In cross-sectional view, the Zuidwending salt dome (figure below) shows steep flanks and a flat top surface. Base Salt (base Zechstein Group) is some 2,800 to 3,000 m deep. Top Salt lies at a shallow depth of around 200 m below ground level. In the salt-depleted areas north-west and south-east of the dome, the thickness of the salt layer has decreased down to 200 m.

Beds which bear a potential risk for cavern construction, in particular, the highly soluble Zechstein 2 potash seam, the massive Zechstein 3 Main Anhydrite, are known to occur along the salt dome flank. To ensure a safe cavern construction process and to be able to realise the desired storage volumes, it was therefore not only necessary to consider safety mar-
gins to the salt dome flanks and to neighbouring caverns, but also to understand the stratigraphic and structural context of each particular location.

This method enables, for instance, problematic sediments like clay, carnallite and anhydrite to be identified inside a more or less homogeneous section of Zechstein 2 salt. In addition, information acquired during the subsequent leaching was used to regularly verify and adapt the latest geological interpretation. Page 28

Latest surveying technology for new caverns The sonar surveying of cavities as well as the geophysical surveillance of the new caverns in Zuidwending have been carried out by SOCON Sonar Control Kavernenvermessung GmbH, Giesen, Germany. Indeed SOCON has more than 40 years of experience in this field of work, and by applying the most up-to-date surveying techniques you are assured that the surveillance work is done not only properly but safely too. For this project SOCON specially adapted its established surveying and data processing procedures to the requirements of a twowell leaching concept. The survey trucks used in Zuidwending are fitted with the latest surveying
technology, which was developed and manufactured in our own R&D department. An innovation in the new data acquisition system CavScan is that now all the components are housed in one compact workstation. An integrated survey computer performs the communication with the tool and the signal processing in real time. Two flat screens constantly display the relevant data of all the important functions, operating procedures and conditions in the cavern. CavScan not only makes cavern surveying more efficient but also safer, because a range of safety-relevant features have now been integrated into the system.
Modernste meettechnologie voor nieuwe cavernes Further development has also been carried out on the BSF sonar tools, which are now available in a new BSF II version. These tools are constructed in the proven modular design and enable measurements to be carried out in all media types found underground, for instance brine, crude oil and natural gas. The physical parameters needed to optimal control the measuring procedure as well as to interpret the results of a cavern survey can be recorded in a continuous log measured during a single run of the SOCON tool.

Cuttings – the chips of rock cut by the rotating drill bit and circulated to the surface by the drilling mud – are collected at regular depth intervals. During active drilling, the drilling mud is
pumped into the borehole through the drill string and returns via the annulus, thereby carrying the suspended cuttings to the surface. Cuttings are then sieved out of the drilling fluid as it passes across the shale shakers. The sampled rock cuttings are analysed and petrographically described to provide an initial stratigraphic interpretation.
Oriented cores cut at selected depths are also petrographically described and photographically documented to give direct information on the property of the rock and the character of the geological structures.

Openhole wireline well logging includes the measurement of electrical properties, sonic properties, active and passive nuclear radiation, dimensions of the borehole, etc. In wireline logging, the logging tool is lowered into the open borehole on an armoured, insulated, multiple-conductor cable. When the tool has been lowered to the bottom of the interval of interest, the measurements are taken while pulling the tool out of the well. Open hole geophysical logging provides continuous data-sets of physical formation properties along the well path. Claystone and potash salt, for in-

stance, emit most of the natural radioactivity, so the gamma ray log acts as a good indicator for claystone interbeds within a rock salt sequence. Due to their enhanced density compared to rock salt, claystone and anhydrite interbeds can be identified within a salt succession using the compensated formation density tool. Ground-penetrating radar surveys use electromagnetic waves which are emitted along a vertical profile from a wireline-operated downhole tool with an omni-directional transmitting dipole antenna. Reflections are recorded by the radar system via receiving antennas and then processed. van interne laagniveaus en structurele grenzen in een straal van enkele honderden meters rond de put.
sitive, whereas the 10 MHz antenna records the signal without any angular information. The received signal contains reflections from boundary layers ('reflectors') between materials with different electric impedance. In an evaporite deposit, geological reflectors may be boundary layers between rock salt and other lithologies such as anhydrite, clay, or potassium-magnesium salt. In connection with other exploration methods (e.g. geophysical logging, structural information from oriented cores), and depending on the radar frequencies used, GPR technology can provide information on the orientation and distance of internal bedding planes and structural boundaries in a radius of up to several hundreds of metres around the well.
Although only a small amount of information was available at first, the level of knowledge about the stratigraphy and the internal structural style of the Zuidwending salt dome increased tremendously with every cavern well drilled, due to the comprehensive geological exploration programme. In phase 2 of the project (2009/2010), it was already possible to make safe predictions from one well to the other, and to provide a reliable geological model for each location to fit an optimised cavern layout. In combination with reinterpreted old data, it was finally possible to construct an accurate model of the internal structure of the salt dome, which can be turned into three-dimensional digital graphics with the help of 3D software. This 3D geological model is a very reliable basis for evaluating the geological risk before drilling each new borehole at each new cavern location. At the time when the fourth cavern was being specifically sited, the location of the northern flank of the salt
dome was not fully apparent. If the original cavern location had been chosen, there was a good chance that another cavern could not be created in the space between this cavern and the salt flank. That’s why a limited seismic investigation was performed, working with NAM, making use of processing technology, i.e. "virtual source technology" developed by Shell-Houston. This investigation showed that the north flank lay roughly 100 metres more to the south than originally supposed. By using directional drilling techniques on the fourth cavern, a subsequent cavern could be positioned between this cavern and the salt flank. End of 2010, four caverns have been successfully leached and gas filled, and are in operation since January 1st, 2011. For phase 2, a new well has been drilled and subsequently a cavern is being leaching for Gasunie since begin 2010. Due to the collected geological knowledge none of the pre-planned cavern locations in this geologically challenging part of the Zuidwending dome had to be abandoned.

CB&I Lummus
Solutions for the hydrocarbon industry The Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending plant is designed for unmanned operation, which required careful consideration during the design of the control and safety systems. Large bore, heavy schedule piping with a multitude of valves were required within narrow space constraints which, along with the tight schedule, added to the challenges of designing this plant.

as well, providing some of the detailed engineering work. A 3D model was used for design and constructability reviews. This model was also used to develop commissioning plans to ensure that construction activities for the send-out facilities could be completed in a safe manner while the
adjacent gas injection systems were already commissioned and in operation. Reliable project management systems were used to manage the tight schedule for construction and phased commissioning, ensuring on-time availability of construction drawings and materials.
CB&I Lummus performed some of the basic engineering as well as the detailed engineering, procurement and field engineering for the above ground gas compression and export facilities and wellhead connections. The work was executed for VOF Zuidwending, a joint venture between Gasunie and Nuon. The project was executed in close cooperation with the client in an integrated taskforce based in the CB&I Lummus office in The Hague. CB&I’s Cairo office participated in the project, 3D model of the Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending plant 3D model van de Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending installaties

Cavern leaching and gas completion in detail Role of AkzoNobel in the realisation of caverns
east of Veendam with good results. The excellent brine quality, as well as the geological exploration up till now, indicate a very pure salt dome, minimising the geological risk of constructing and operating gas storage caverns. Compared with other ‘green field’ projects, one big advantage is the possibility of making good use in AkzoNobel’s factory in Delfzijl of the brine produced by solution mining the Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending. The produced brine will have a low salt (NaCl) content during the initial leaching phase, but the concentration will increase to near saturation later on. In order to provide the Delfzijl salt plant with saturated brine, the produced brine from the planned gas caverns is resaturated in caverns operating in AkzoNobel’s brine field.
The international salt company AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals owns the ‘Adolf van Nassau’ salt concession in the Zuidwending area. AkzoNobel has operated two underground salt cavern sites in Zuidwending and Heiligerlee since the 1960s. Using more than 1,000 m³/h fresh water, solution mining technology has been used to leach out more than 15 underground caverns. The brine is pumped via two pipelines to the salt factory in Delfzijl, located around 35 kilometers east of Zuidwending, where it is processed into salt by vacuum vaporisation. In order to timely realise caverns, an agreement to cooperate with AkzoNobel was closed. This company is mining the northern part of the Zuidwending salt dome
Salt factory Delfzijl Zoutfabriek Delfzijl
Due to time constraints to realise this project as soon as possible, a major
factor when designing the solution mining process was to make optimal use of the maximum brine processing capacity of the salt factory, which was between 1,100 and 1,200 m³ per hour at that time. The leaching rate per cavern was therefore limited to around 300 m³ per hour, as simultaneous leaching of four caverns was planned. Project execution involved several phases: • • • •

DEEP. Underground Engineering, together with KBB Underground Technologies, Germany, designed the caverns and carried out all of the associated work, including geological mapping, drilling, leaching completion, tightness tests, and the leaching operation.
Different solution mining methods for the Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending Well design and general cavern set-up To enable high gas withdrawal and injection capacities of 400,000 m³/h (n) per cavern, the four caverns were designed with two wells each (A and B well). The initial project (1st phase) comprised the development of four gas storage caverns with a maximum net geometrical volume of at least
500,000 m³. The leaching programme has been designed as such as at any time after this cavern has been solution mined it will be possible to enlarge the cavern to a maximum volume of 1,000,000 m³. In order to make the design of the two boreholes per cavern as easy and simple as possible mainly vertical boreholes have been designed. The first borehole drilling started at the beginning of 2007 before the well pads were arranged and simultaneously the pump station for solution mining was constructed and the pipelines has been laid. The drilling has take 1 ½ year. In total, eight cavern wells were drilled till the end of 2007. The leaching of the first cavern has been started June 2007 while the drilling of the other wells has been continued. The leaching operation of the four caverns was finished in March 2010. The leaching programme was developed in a way that two pairs of caverns were leached. Each pair of cavern has been ready in more or less the same time. The completion of the gas wells, the first gas fill and the snubbing of the debrining string could therefore be conducted back-to-back.

leaching phase is terminated when a connection between the A well and the B well is established.
Leaching process The initial sump leaching phase is the same for all caverns, regardless of whether they have one or two access wells. The process is conducted conventionally with a standard concentric double completion. Fresh water is injected through the inner leaching string, while the produced brine is
transported out of the cavern to the surface via the outer leaching string of the same well.
For the main leaching phase, two different leaching methods are involved in both construction phases: In the four caverns of the 1st phase equipped with two wells, the leaching is done conventionally through only a standard double leaching completion in the A well while the B well is filled with nitrogen to protect the borehole wall from leaching. The B well is occasionally used for sonar surveys. In the caverns of the 2nd construction phase with two wells, the main leaching phase is done in a different way than in phase 1. The A well is used for water injection, and for moving the blanket upwards when preparing the next leaching step. Sonar surveys are conducted through the A well, either in the open cavern or through one casing. The B well is exclusively used for brine extraction.
In caverns with two access wells, the sump leaching is performed through the A well while the B well is filled with nitrogen to avoid any leaching in the borehole. In these caverns, the sump

• Surface connection from the B-well to the A-well for brine or water transport has to be supplied, installed and tested. • Alternative wellhead design • Associated revisions of the process design and engineering. • During the sump leaching operation, the A-well is equipped with an outer and an inner leaching completion (conventional). • The B-well has to be equipped with a single leaching string at any time between start-up and changes in leaching mode. The leaching process design through two boreholes involves the following advantages: • Possibility to boost leaching rates and to decrease leaching times. • Compact wellheads. • Shorter workovers (no inner casing strings need to be removed). • Fewer workovers needed, as full workovers can be substituted by e.g. perforations. • Sonar surveys can be conducted through one leaching string without pulling any strings out (sonar measurement through two leaching strings usually affects the quality of the survey).

Aspects of subsurface installations for gas storage "Permanent packer" After drilling, the wells were completed with a 13 ⅜’’ / 13 ⅝’’ last cemented casing string. This casing has gastight welded connections. A 9 ⅝’’ gas production string was installed for gas operations. The gas tightness (integrity) of this inner string and the subsurface gas installations makes it possible to monitor the pressure in the annulus between the 9 ⅝’’ string and the last cemented casing string, and identify any pressure anomalies. Repairs can be carried out to fix a leak if a pressure anomaly is detected. A permanent packer has to be installed before installing the internal gas production string and to seal the annulus from the cavern. The permanent packer has elastomeric elements that are activated by hydraulic pres-
sure to seal the annulus between the packer and the last cemented casing. The slips above and below the elastomeric elements can be hydraulically and mechanically actuated. They take up the mechanical forces that are applied to the packer. Below the packer, a so called “tail pipe” is connected to the packer. When the packer has been set, the gas production string can be installed. The lowest part of this string is the anchor unit, which can be connected to the already installed packer assembly. The gas production string also has welded connections. Each seam of the gas production string has to undergo X-ray and ultrasonic inspection. After the last pipe has been welded to the string and lowered into the well, the anchor can be “latched” into the packer. After the string has been successfully connected to the packer, it is pulled to put it under tensional stress. This is necessary because the string expands and shortens in response to temperature changes during gas operations. Putting the string under tensile stress prevents the string and other equipment being damaged by this temper-
To ensure a very high standard of safety, a Subsurface Safety Valve (SCSSV – Surface Controlled Subsurface Safety Valve) is used. This valve is installed approx. 50 m below ground level and is actuated by a hydraulic control line. This assembly makes sure that the cavern can be safely closed if the surface installation is damaged by an accident. The SCSSV closes automatically if the control line loses pressure as a result of a leak. The SCSSV assembly is welded in the string (tubing mounted) which allows a large internal diameter to be maintained. Another option for closing the cavern is to set plugs in the tail pipe below the packer assembly. This requires two landing nipples (a shoulder with a smaller internal diameter than the pipe) to be installed in the tail pipe.
Wellhead After installation of the gas production string, the next step is to install the wellhead.

Debrining string A debrining string has to be installed in one of the two wells per cavern. The brine is displaced through this string when gas is injected into the cavern. The base of this string has to
be installed at the bottom of the cavern to gain as much gas storage volume as possible. The gas is injected through the annulus between the gas production string and the debrining string (6 ⅝’’).
When the whole cavern is filled with gas, the debrining string is removed under gas pressure. This has to be done with a special snubbing unit that is able to pull the debrining string. Firstly, three plugs are installed
in the debrining string to seal off the string from the cavern. Afterwards, the string can be pulled through a preventer stack. For safety reasons, several preventers are used to seal the 6 ⅝’’ x 9 ⅝’’ annulus from the atmos-
phere. After the debrining string has been completely disassembled, the SCSSV is activated and the gas cavern is ready for gas operations.
Gas integrity test in Zuidwending A basic condition for successful leaching and storage operations is a test to confirm that the installation is gas tight: this is vital for the leaching process (because nitrogen gas is used as a blan-

ket), as well as for the storage operations when the caverns are filled with natural gas. In essence, two gas integrity tests are carried out to check the gas tightness of the access borehole: • After the borehole has been drilled and completed, but before solution mining begins • At the end of solution mining operations before gas first fill takes place (See picture on page 43)
Low voltage room of pumping station Laagspanningsruimte van pompstation
The two gas integrity tests are carried out following the same principle and using nitrogen as the test medium: the nitrogen is sealed off in the access borehole for a defined period of time, and parameters such as pressure and temperature are recorded to evaluate the test. This measurement data is then used to evaluate the test based on a mass balance of the sealed-in nitrogen. The figures show a schematic diagram of the test. This again highlights the special feature of the Zuidwending project: a cavern with two access boreholes. In test (1), the two access boreholes are tested independently from one another because when drilling stops there is still

no connection between the two wells. When leaching takes place, the two boreholes are joined up by the intervening cavity forming the cavern. This means that test (2) can be implemented knowing that there is direct communication between the two wells. Nevertheless, the subsequent gas integrity test for the gas storage operations can be carried out separately for each access well, even when undertaken simultaneously: positioning the nitrogen/ brine interface in the necks of the access holes creates two isolated test volumes. This means that the trapped nitrogen masses in the two tests can be evaluated separately, providing an independent assessment of the gas integrity of each access borehole. The following activities can then start after successful verification of the gas integrity of the boreholes.

guur).

Development of semi-automatic „Submerged Arc Welding“ (SAW) machine makes success complete Very thick pipe wall thicknesses, and increasing urgency the more the project progresses – do you step up a gear or get creative? A. Hak Leidingbouw was responsible for laying the underground pipeline (wall thicknesses up to 63 mm!) both inside and outside the Zuidwending gas installation, and did both jobs successfully. Semi-automatic SAW machines The thicker the pipe wall, the more time it takes to weld the pipes together. A manual 30'' welded joint with a wall thickness of 63 mm takes two welders around 36 hours. In other
words, four days. The solution for speeding up the construction process was to reduce the welding process time using a welding workshop consisting of six self-built, semi-automatic SAW machines. With these SAW machines, the pipe rotates while the welding machine and welding filler material feed remain stationary. This allowed sections of approximately 60 m to be handled, with between five and six welds each. With 70 sections to process, this meant a major time gain compared to manual welding.
Submerged Arc (SA) welding unit "Onder poederdek" (OP) - lasunit
Transport To be able to handle these long sections weighing 1100 kg/m, a mobile workshop was an absolute necessity. Transporting these also required a number of heavy-duty cranes, which A. Hak also had available - but only after shipping them all the way back from Saudi Arabia! Fluxed-Core Arc Welding (FCAW) After the sections were transported to their final destination, they were manually welded using the fluxed-core (FCAW) technique. FCAW allowed the manual welding time to be reduced from 40 hours to 26 hours.

Operating the Zuidwending natural gas storage "Licence to operate" Storage of natural gas is a mining activity and therefore subject to the Dutch Mining Act. That is why, in addition to obtaining a storage licence, Gasunie had to qualify as an operator in the sense of the Mining Act. At the end of 2009, the Ministry of Economic Affairs granted Gasunie permission to act as an operator. The operatorship under the Mining Act means in practice that regular consultation with and reporting to Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen (State Supervision of Mines) is required. For example, a monthly report must be provided on how much natural gas has been injected and dispatched, and a report has to be issued daily on the variation in cavern wellhead pressure. Safety and environmental incidents have to be reported immediately. Operating window Preconditions apply to the operation of caverns. These have been configured after detailed rock and thermo-

Control room gas installation Controlekamer gasinstallatie
