In this edition of Sabaku, we will inform you with all pleasure about these festivities, which attract tourists from all over the world. For instance, Suriname is turning into a real ‘festival country’, where culture and music take centre stage. Festivals that are definitely worth a visit in the near future, are the Moengo Festival of Visual Arts, Suriname Jazz Festival and the National Art Fair. Top events are also being held in other Surinam Airways destinations, including, of course, Curaçao North Sea Jazz, and the Summer Carnival in Rotterdam. This edition of Sabaku is all about the cultural diversity in Suriname. Surinamese cuisine is unique in the world thanks to its many influences. More and more restaurants of international stature are opening their doors in Suriname. High-end restaurants that guarantee a lovely night out in style, and whose dishes honour the Surinamese local produce. But if you’re just hungry for something nice, Suriname offers delicious street food along roadsides everywhere, with dishes that are literally finger-licking good. That’s typically Suriname. The country is like a menu, and you choose what you would like to enjoy. And there is an overwhelming amount of choice on the menu. For that reason, more and more tourists from everywhere in the world are coming to see and enjoy with their own eyes what makes Suriname, and of course its inhabitants, so special. We wish you a pleasant journey and a lovely and relaxed stay at your destination.

windstreken.

“Sabaku” is the name of Surinam Airways’ inflight magazine. It is pronounced “SA-BA-KOO” with the emphasis on the last syllable. Sabaku is the Surinamese word for the snowy egret (and some other species of egrets). Snowy egrets are small, graceful, longlegged birds with a long, pointed, powerful bill. At sunrise, the birds leave the communal roost and nesting sites within a short period of time. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves. The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky. Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

ADVIES
Advice
REISADVIEZEN
YOUR SEATBELTS Before take off and landing, fasten your seatbelts and keep these fastened until the ‘fasten seat belt sign’ is turned off. As a precaution, you may keep your seatbelt loosely fastened during the entire flight.
Draag daarom ruimzittende schoenen of slippers.
RELAXATION A selection of international newspapers and magazines is available on the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v.v). And you can also enjoy music and films via headsets. Because of the cabin pressure and enforced sitting for several hours, your feet may become swollen. Wear, therefore, roomy shoes or slippers.
SPECIAL MEALS Special meal requests, either because of medical or religious can be fulfilled. Please advise us of this when making flight reservations.
HEALTH The atmosphere inside the aircraft is dryer than that on the ground , therefore you should drink as much as possible during a flight . Alcohol , coffee and tea however, remove fluids from the body . Use these stimulans as little as possible. Move about as much as possible ( especially on longer flights ). In the magazine you will find exercises which you can do while sitting in your aircraft seat. The medical dispensary on board contains medicine for the most anticipated minor complaints . If you take medicine regularly , be sure to always place this in your hand baggage.

On the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v. v.) we can in case of emergency also provide baby food and diapers(limited available). For older children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must drink a lot. If you are breast- feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give your baby a pacifier or a bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give an older child either candy or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or swallow to lessen the pressure. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use electric equipment with transmiters and receivers. In addition , radios, cellular phones, laptops and televisions disrupt the sensitive navigation system and are not allowed. ONDANKS SUCCESSEN BLIJF IK NEDERIG, DIENSTBAAR EN DANKBAAR
Glenn
TYPHOON
NewYear’s Eve is the perfect opportunity to meet old friends and to make new ones!
Alles kwam samen.

Everything musician Glenn de Randamie (Typhoon) touches, turns into gold at the moment. His acclaimed new album ‘Lobi Da Basi’ (Love Is The Boss) received numerous awards, even including an Edison for best album of 2014. He got the inspiration for this CD during a visit to Suriname in 2010. Musically and creatively, he was at a dead end. Deep in the inlands of Suriname, he saw a sign on a house with the text ‘Lobi Da Basi’. This journey to the country of his ancestors had a huge impact on Typhoon, who was born and raised in the Dutch province of Gelderland.

His visit to Suriname was a turning point for Typhoon. “I had rather run out of stories. I had said pretty much everything both in interviews and through my records. I thought: I’ll do some chilling in Suriname, researching my family history. Only when I got back, it became clear what it meant to me, and the inspiration returned, with the album ‘Lobi Da Basi’ as a result. He is even more enthusiastic about his latest visit to Suriname, where he gave a number of spectacular performances with his band. “This latest visit has changed my view of life. I see things from a new perspective”. Typhoon comes from a musical family, and is the younger brother of rappers Blaxtar and O-Dog, and his sister is R&B singer Dinopha. In 2004, he obtained his high school diploma at the Carolus Clusius College in Zwolle, winning the Grote Prijs van Nederland in the category R&B-Hip hop. A first sign that Typhoon had an amazing amount of talent, a promise for the future. He has more than fulfilled that promise in 2015, and Typhoon is generally considered to be the best Dutch hip hop artist by music connoisseurs. With performances at the biggest festivals (Lowlands, North Sea Jazz) and an impressive performance in the Ridderzaal for King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima with the song “Van de regen naar de zon” (“From Rain to Sunshine”) composed by him, he also become well-known by the general public. Typhoon made a big impression with his understated performance as part of the celebration of 200 years Kingdom of the Netherlands. Glenn de Randamie, born on the Veluwe, becoming famous in Zwolle, has Surinamese roots, which he got to know better and learned to appreciate during his visits to his ‘native country’. “Mind you,”Typhoon says, “I love the Netherlands. I was born here, and am grateful for what I’ve been able to achieve here by working hard. But I am also
TYPHOON
immensely proud of my Surinamese roots. When I was sixteen years old, visiting Suriname for the first time, I really came to Suriname as a tourist. I thought it was nice to visit my relatives, but apart from that it didn’t have a big impact on me. But every subsequent visit was like a homecoming, and as I got older, I started to appreciate Suriname enormously, finding a great deal of inspiration. I also began to put material things into perspective. Because really, what more do you need than sitting under a tree, enjoying the beautiful nature and culture of Suriname? The Suriname River is magical and very inspiring. The combination of the Netherlands and Suriname within me inspires, making me very rich, spiritually. During every visit to Suriname, I keep finding a new piece of myself,”Typhoon says. One reviewer wrote the following about the album ‘Lobi Da Basi’: “His second album ‘Lobi Da Basi’ is widely acclaimed as an enormously rich album. It’s a record with musical layers and variation, and with a personal and universal touch. It’s full of details that make the record interesting. The leitmotiv in all the elements is the influence Suriname had on ‘Lobi Da Basi’.” A review to make one walk with one’s head in the clouds. But Typhoon doesn’t act like a star.“That’s because of how I was raised,” he explains, “I am grateful for everything I have achieved, and stay subservient and humble. For that reason, my latest visit to Suriname, together with my band, brothers and sister, was so emotional. It all came together. We were received in Suriname with a lot of love and respect. Each of our shows is unforgettable. We even gave a performance that lasted more than 3 hours. My longest concert ever, and at the end I was still full of energy. I cherish that energy and want to retain it. I found so many new contacts and friends again here, I can’t wait to come to Suriname again,”Typhoon said a few days after his return to the Netherlands. Typhoon came full circle when he visited the house in the Surinamese inland at Forest Resort Menimi, where the sign with Lobi Da Basi was still hanging.

CASSAVE ONMISBAAR IN DE SURINAAMSE KEUKEN
CASSAVA
Cassave AARDVRUCHT IS VERRASSEND VEELZIJDIG
Best begrijpelijk.
Smakelijk eten! * uitspraak ‘doekoen’ en ‘kroepoek’

CASSAVA INDISPENSABLE IN SURINAMESE CUISINE
CASSAVA
Cassava TUBER IS SURPRISINGLY VERSATILE
What can you cook with cassava? If you’re of Surinamese origin, or you have previously visited Suriname, you’ll have thought of four or more dishes already by now. Quite understandable. Cassava is indispensable in Surinamese cuisine.
Cassava is the edible tuber of a plant that thrives mainly on savannah soil. The root contains a lot of starch, which makes it nutritious. In Suriname, there are two types of cassava, namely the sweet and bitter cassava. The latter contains toxic cyanide, and therefore cannot be eaten raw. That’s why, after harvest, the roots are often peeled, grated, and rinsed with water to remove the cyanide. After having dried, they’re ground up into flour. The sweet variety, peeled after harvest and cooked in water, is immediately edible. Cassava can be used to prepare a range of dishes and snacks.

Cassava versus culture How cassava is prepared, depends on who’s cooking it. Because of the cultural diversity, every population group has its own preparation method. The Javanese part of the population usually cuts the cassava into thick chips that are fried. The teloh, as the dish is known, is served with spicy trie, vegetables and sometimes peanut sauce. The cassava prepared this way is crunchy and delicious.Another typical cassava snack from Javanese cuisine is dukun*.A sweet treat of cassava, coconut and raisins wrapped in banana leaves. Krupuk*, crisps and porridge are some of the other snacks that are made from cassava. In Creole cuisine, the cassava bojo, a type of cake, is baked. Cassava can also be found in Creole hot dishes. Heri Heri, a dish that has its origins in the slavery era, is very famous. This dish consists of various tubers such as cassava, ripe and green bananas, potato, napi, sweet chips, salted fish, vegetables, a boiled egg, pepper and vinegar. Creole soups, like cassava and grietbana soup, have cassava as a main ingredient. Rice can be replaced in soups by cassava tom tom. The cooked cassava is mashed into a smooth mass, from which little balls are made, which are called tom tom.The tom tom can also be made from cooked green or half-ripe bananas. Meant to be eaten using your fingers, to be used along with ochre, peanut and pea soup.
Inland In the inland, cassava is a staple food for the maroons and indigenous people. They use it more in the form of bakakesaba or para-korantie, the so-called baked cassava bread. They also make kwak from it, with the cassava flour being baked dry as loose ‘granules’. It is often taken along on long treks, since it can be kept for months. In addition, the maroons also make kokori. This is a type of cassava flour. The liquid is pressed out of the grated cassava, and dried in a matapi over the smoke from a wood fire. The preparation can be compared to that of the tom tom, only with smaller balls that are cooked in
soup along with fish or game.An interesting brown sauce is Kasripo, which is made from the juice of the squeezed cassava. Also famous is the dosi, a treat made from bakakesaba with stewed coconut and sometimes pineapple and ginger. The natives mainly use the bitter cassava to make kasiri, a cassava beer that contains alcohol. During, but also after the abolishment of slavery, cassava flour was used to make starch for clothing. This starch is mostly used for starching the angisas and the various types of headdress worn by the Creole women when they’re in their koto (Creole traditional dress).
Fusions These days, chefs create fusions of the traditional cassava dishes. One example is cassava mash, which is nice whipped with milk, margarine, salt and nutmeg. Or the cassava salad, made with small cubes of diced cassava, pumpkin and boiled eggs. With a mayonnaise dressing, this is then mixed with finely cut long beans. Great! Cassava can be found at the market. You will have to wash and peel the cassava root yourself though. Nowadays, precooked and frozen cassava can also be found in refrigeration at almost every supermarket. So try out a delicious cassava dish someday. Enjoy! * pronounced ‘dookoon’ and ‘kroopook’

STREET FOOD
‘Come Back gegarandeerd!’

Floyd Koulen is zo’n worstman.

STREET FOOD
‘Come Back garanteed!’ If you want to have an adventurous snack, street food is a must. This phenomenon has been part of the Surinamese food culture for
Streetfood
generations. Over time, the range of available products has increased enormously. For a better introduction to street food, starting with an aperitif is recommended. Don’t be afraid to have spicy snacks, served from one of the portable booths that add colour to the streetscape, providing a smile and a satisfied feeling. In and around Paramaribo, along the road, from your car, you can buy a piece of warm meat, black pudding, fladder (beef tripe) or bere. The sausages are cooked in a warm broth with lots of herbs including onion, celery and hot peppers. The sellers are colloquially known as the ‘sausage men’. Over the years, they’ve succeeded in establishing groups of regular customers whose preferences they know. Floyd Koulen is one such sausage man. He works in a fifteen year old stand at the Kasabaholoweg. The sausages he sells are made by the Flora butchery according to a secret family recipe. Thanks to the quality of their sausages, the company has grown to include three points of sale. “I ensure my customers’ comeback. With this, I also guarantee good quality and hygiene. It’s so tasty that you’ll come back,” he says.
First meatballs According to Steven Dinmohamed, butcher and owner of the Stedin butchery, selling food from a pot along the streets was introduced in the 1950s by a butcher named Wijngaarde. He was the first to sell meatballs from a pot along the Zwartenhovenbrugstraat. About five years later, black pudding was offered in butcheries. This brought with it a religious issue. “Muslims and Hindus do not eat blood products. To cater to this group, the meat pudding was developed. Now the product range has been expanded with fish sausage, sausages, eggs, chicken legs, bere and fladder,” Dinmohamed says. Butchery employees, who were familiar with the sausage recipes, saw potential for earning extra cash by selling sausages out in the street. The number of sausage men
26
Inflight Magazine
has increased enormously, and they keep a close eye on presentation, flavour and quality. The warm sausages are cut into pieces and offered in a bag or tray. Sometimes with a bit of hot sauce and pickles on the side. The sausage is wrapped in beef casings, which are too thick too swallow. So you’d best squeeze out the delicious filling. Although, after enough chewing – just like chewing gum – it will become thinner and thinner, and you can swallow it as well. Enjoy!
Street menu To neutralize the hot flavour, shaved ice is a refreshing street drink. You can buy a cup of shaved ice from a stall, with various homemade syrups such as tamarind, passion fruit, orgeat or cola. This colourful ice cream is perfect on a hot day. If you want a somewhat more extensive street menu, your best bet is a street intermediate course. In addition to the sausage sellers, you’ll notice the many BBQ signs along the road. The tempting smell of tasty, tenderly barbecued chicken legs, burgers, spare ribs, satay and wings is almost irresistible. The meals are served with fries and coleslaw and finished with mayonnaise, ketchup and peanut sauce. You just have to try it! Street food is characterized by its quality. In most cases, it’s healthy, hygienic and tasty. In addition, the experience is important. The decoration and look of the vending booths says a lot about the atmosphere and the quality and taste of the food. You’re not just enjoying good food, but you’re also getting in touch with other people, often resulting in amusing or interesting conversations. www.flyslm.com

Information
i
ALGEMEEN
+
GEZONDHEID
VLUCHTINFORMATIE

INFORMATIE
In Suriname people speak Dutch, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that customs are the same as in Holland. It’s good to know what’s allowed and what you’d rather avoid.
i
GENERAL
• Being polite is important. Address people you don’t know very politely. • Many homes don’t have a doorbell; in those cases call out “klopklop” or rattle the gate. • When you visit someone at home, take off your shoes before you enter. • You can rent a car in Suriname, but be aware of the somewhat chaotic traffic, bad roads and the fact that there is left-hand traffic.
+
HEALTH
• The sun is blazing in Suriname; therefore you must protect your head and skin. Because of the clouds and the wind it sometimes takes longer before you realize that you’re getting burnt. • Always check whether you have to take malaria tablets. Contact your local health authorities or the Bureau for Public Health Care (BOG) in Suriname. When you’re in a malaria invested area, it’s good advice to cover your skin especially in the evening, use a deet product and sleep under a mosquito net. If after your stay in a malaria area you get headaches and fever, please see your doctor immediately. • Are you using special medicines? Take a spare supply with you. There’s a chance that these medicines are not available in Suriname. • A number of international heath insurances are accepted when you’re admitted in one of the large hospitals in Suriname. Sometimes you have to pay cash for some procedures; upon your arrival in Holland you can ask for a reimbursement from your insurance company. WATER
• Tap water is clean and tasty, but always verify if it’s really tap water. Not all households are connected to the water main, and rainwater could cause problems. • Always take a bottle of water with you when you’re going outside. In the tropics you loose more fluid than usual, so it’s important to take in sufficient amounts of fluid. FOOD • Always say whether you’d like hot pepper (sambal) with your meal. Surinamese people usually like spicy food. • Always wash vegetables and fruits before consumption and be careful when eating out.The high temperatures cause bacteria to multiply rapidly. INTERIOR • When you visit the interior, always take along swimming clothes, sun block, hat or cap, mosquito gel containing deet, pants and long-sleeved shirt, raincoat and a flashlight. • Store cameras and other articles that shouldn’t get wet inside a plastic bag before you step into a boat or go into the forest. • Souvenirs are for sale in all varieties and sizes. Before you buy, take into account what kind of goods may or may not be imported into the Netherlands. For instance, products made from tortoise shell, reptile skin or coral are not allowed. • Do you wish to photograph native people or their belongings? Then ask them first. Not everyone appreciates it and some cultures consider photography taboo. • When you are in a closed community, never venture out alone. In the interior it’s the custom to first report to the local authority. FLIGHT INFORMATION Be sure to be at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport at least three hours before departure. So you think you can cook”.
As one of seven children, Peggy Tjin grew up in the Zorg en Hoop neighbourhood in Paramaribo. Her studies, work and love caused Peggy Tjin to become a true global citizen who feels at home in all parts of the world, particularly in the world of the jet set. After having been a teacher and model, Peggy is now a successful “Global Food Critic”, with culinary and lifestyle publications on her internet site, which is visited by tens of thousands of people from all over the world each day. A humble Surinamese girl with big ambitions from a family with seven children, the word ‘impossible’ isn’t in her dictionary. That’s how Peggy Tjin describes herself during one of her rare visits to her native country of Suriname. During her stay in Suriname, she has a jam-packed schedule with TV appearances, interviews with newspapers and visits to Surinamese top restaurants she reviews for her culinary blog as “Global Food Critic”. She also contributes to the show “So you think you can cook”. Peggy was an ambitious girl who left for the Netherlands in the 1970s with her family, ending up in Breda. She successfully completed her studies to become a teacher, and also enjoyed success as a model. She started working as a teacher at an Islamic elementary school in Amsterdam. In that capacity she had many appearances on Dutch TV, including on the popular talk show Barend & Van Dorp, where she impressed with her opinionated appearances. It was clear that Peggy had found her place in the spotlights. We’re skipping a number of chapters in her eventful life, finally ending up in New York, where she and her husband, who worked in the movie industry, decided to combine their talents 15 years ago in Peggy Tjin Productions, which also has a branch office in Amsterdam. Through her connections with the international jet set, she visited many high-end restaurants across the world. She decided to post her experiences in these restaurants on her personal blog. These publications were much appreciated by her friends. More and more people visited her blog, where she also gave tips about how people could prepare the meals she had eaten at the top restaurants at home, in a healthy manner and for a lot less money. The success is overwhelming.
As Global Food Critic, Peggy Tjin travels the world Her husband produced short videos for her website, which are viewed by thousands of people daily. From her home in New York, Peggy conquered the world, and appearances in TV shows, publications in lifestyle magazines and soon her first cookbook make the success complete. She has turned her hobby into her profession, and is now extremely successful with that. Her interest in cooking is a result of her admiration for her mother, who managed to prepare delicious food for the large family, using few ingredients and lots of love. Peggy likes showing how one can cook glamour dishes quickly (often within 10 minutes) for a small amount of money (below US$10) on her website. During her brief visit to Suriname, “Global Food Critic” Peggy is happy to see more and more top restaurants in Suriname that can compete with top restaurants abroad.Tourists and visitors in Suriname, Peggy says, love to go to top restaurants for refined dishes that are presented in an attractive ambiance. Surinamese cuisine, according to Peggy Tjin, is unique, but it has to refine itself and evolve in order to end up on the culinary world map, while retaining the Surinamese culture. Take a look at www.peggytjin.com for some culinary inspiration.

JULY 1st 2015
D AY O F C E L E B R AT I O N A N D R E M E M B R A N C E
Keti Koti means: ‘Broken Chains’. It symbolizes the abolishment of slavery on July 1, 1863, in the former colonies of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles, marking the end of a dark era in Surinamese and Dutch history.
In Suriname, this day is officially known as ‘Day of Liberty’, to mark this day as a holiday for all the people in the country, not just for the descendants of the slaves. But the more common name is Keti Koti, the broken chains, or Manspasi, emancipation. With the annual Keti Koti commemoration on July 1, all Surinamese people reflect on the past and look ahead to the future, celebrating freedom, equality and connectedness. The most beautiful aspect of the celebration is that everyone wears their finest clothes, creating a colourful collection of people. In Suriname, the day begins in church, with various services and messages about what the abolishment has given us. Next, a visit to the Independence Square and the Palm Garden and surroundings is a must. Traditional Creole dishes, pastry and drinks can be found in abundance, while nearly everyone can be seen wearing a koto, modern koto or pangi (shawl). On the eve, and on the evening itself, there are various dance parties with good music and delicious food and drink. In the Netherlands, a special element of this unique holiday is the ‘Bigi Spikri’. Bigi Spikri is a fun and colourful parade in traditional dress, to commemorate and celebrate the abolishment of slavery.

‘Bigi Spikri’ is a Surinamese term which literally means ‘large mirror’. The origin is found in the Saramaccastraat, which was Paramaribo’s main street two centuries ago. In the street, various shops could be found, but also houses. After a hard day’s work, the people who lived there would sit on a bench beside the road to look at the people passing by, commenting on clothing and shoes. So the eyes of the observers were mirrors for the people passing by, the Bigi Spikri. In the following years, the term is used for events having to do with the koto. For instance, Robin ‘Dobru’ Raveles organized a Bigi Spikri toward the end of the 1960s, where he presented the modern koto. Although intended to last for a day, the exposition, where various antique pieces could be viewed, remained for several days. And now, since 2009, the Bigi Spikri parade has been held in the Netherlands as part of this day’s commemoration. A highlight is the Keti Koti Festival in Amsterdam, which will take place on the Museumplein in 2015, since the Oosterpark is undergoing reconstruction work. Keti Koti is an extravagant holiday with lots of music, continuing to the wee hours. Don’t miss it, and enjoy the celebrations, but above all don’t forget the background and reason for Keti Koti, which is one of the reasons why it’s celebrated so intensely in Suriname and by Surinamese people.

The Suriprofs celebrate their fifteenth anniversary this year. The foundation of professional footballers of Surinamese origin playing in Europe was officially established in 1999, but the first charity match took place in May 2000. This friendly match is organized at the end of the football season. For the first editions, the champion of the Dutch Eerste Divisie (second division) was the opponent. Later, the Suriprofs would play against Eredivisie (top division) clubs. This way, the Surinamese professional football players raise money for charity in Suriname. By doing that, they want to show their commitment to their native country or the land of their (grand)parents. Nearly all of the projects that receive support from the Suriprofs are related to sport facilitating, healthcare, care and guidance of children in need and young people with a handicap. The past twelve years, 50 projects have been completed for a total amount of 1.7 million euros. Stanley Menzo has been chairman of the Suriprofs since the foundation. The former goalkeeper of Dutch record champion Ajax and the Dutch national team calls it an impressive amount, especially when you consider it’s raised by a small volunteer organization: ‘Over

Menzo mentions the renovation of the Diakonessenhuis hospital, the donation of a bus to the Betheljada foundation for the transport of multiply disabled young people, the construction of mini artificial turf courts with pitch lighting for school kids in Latour and Nieuw Nickerie. The Emile de la Fuente stadium in the south of Paramaribo also had facilities added. In addition, an interactive website was built for the Tien Minuten Journaal (Surinamese news show for children). On Tonka Island in the Brokopondo Reservoir, a nature education centre was constructed with financial support from the Suriprofs.

The last two projects, which were completed in 2013, benefit youth work in the north of Paramaribo. According to Menzo, that is perfectly in line with the objective of the Suriprofs: ‘Neighbourhood organizations ABSO and SV Inter Maretraite focus on around 400 young people. Boys and girls for whom organized sports and recreation are a commodity that’s often out of their reach. We can now stimulate that group and offer them extra perspectives.’ The first editions of the annual charity event were organized in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. Later, Het Kasteel in the Spangen neighbourhood in Rotterdam, home of professional football club Sparta, formed the backdrop. The match was part of a larger event in which, entirely in the spirit of the Surinamese foundation, the fatu, or fun, was very important. With plenty of opportunity to consume (Surinamese) food and drink, and various musical acts, the organizers accomplished their goal time and again. Every year, thousands of fans come to watch, both Surinamese and Dutch. The past two seasons, the Suriprofs didn’t have an opportunity to organize the annual charity match. Menzo explains that it’s been a puzzle every year since the economic crisis. The event brings along ever increasing costs, including for stadium rental and security. The actual idea is to keep costs low, and to collect as much money as possible: ‘Because we have to call in the aid of companies and countless volunteers, we can’t always guarantee that. A lot also depends on the competition calendar. Many guys still have commitments to a competition, compete in play-offs or join their club on a tour. That’s why it’s so special that Clarence Seedorf is always prepared to play for us. Even though he retired, you can bet he is still extremely fit.’ This year, Seedorf will once again play for the Suriprofs. Because thanks to a more professional approach to exclude financial risks, the annual tradition has been reinstated. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the Suriprofs will play against Ajax 2 on May 13, at sports park De Toekomst in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Also, this fall a commemorative book will be published about 15 years Suriprofs. www.suriprofs.nl

MUSIC
Sranan poku: the best kept secret in music history
Suriname has unique and versatile music culture Suriname has an extremely versatile music culture. But with Surinamese youth growing up with songs by Max Nijman, Lieve Hugo and Oscar Harris, the other musical pearls are in danger of being forgotten. With the CD series Sranan Gowtu and the book by the same name, record executive Kees de Koning wants to change that. As the owner of Dutch record label Top Notch, Kees de Koning has had frequent contact with Surinamese musicians. Whether they played in the backing band for singer Anouk or released their own album with him, like Typhoon, each and every one of them have an extreme sense of rhythm. According to Surinamese musicians, a track hinges on a lively voice, and above all an ingenious beat. Gradually, De Koning became fascinated. After trawling through record stores, looking for rare vinyl, to his own surprise he brought home an increasing amount of Surinamese singles and LPs. He was introduced to Conjunto Latinos,The Kaseko Masters and The Cosmo Stars: ‘cool records. It’s not only infectious and uplifting music, but the compositions are also very cleverly constructed. Singers usually have an amazing vocal range, and the percussion is at times inimitable. No normal drums, but a whole range of ruffling congas and skratjies. And I haven’t even mentioned the guitar solos or the arrangements with wind instruments.’ But when De Koning wanted to determine the origin and backgrounds of all those Surinamese artists, he discovered that very little has been written about them. ‘Many records and CDs turned out to be hardly available anymore. And even less can be found out about their musical careers.’ From Edgar “Bugru” Burgos, frontman of Trafassi and tireless singer of the hit Wasmasjien, De Koning heard so many toris and anecdotes that he decided to start documenting Surinamese mu-

sical culture. He saw it as a moral obligation: ‘Surinamese poku is part of the Dutch cultural heritage. Artists like Kid Dynamite, Oscar Harris and Lieve Hugo have left their mark on the Dutch music scene. And they still have that influence. Michael Deira and Aptijt also had a huge hit with Boeke in the Netherlands. And don’t forget Damaru with Tuintje in mijn hart, or more recently Kenny B., who had his breakthrough this year.’ In 2013, De Koning launched the Sranan Gowtu project with a compilation album of Surinamese classics. Evergreens such as Bruine bonen met rijst by Max Woiski sr. and Adjossi by Max Nijman can be found on it, in addition to more recent hits by Master Blaster and Papa Touwtjie. Entirely in style, the album was also released in vinyl. Soon, the Sranan Gowtu book will be published. For research and writing, De Koning asked Diederik Samwel for help. This author and journalist has been going to Suriname since 1998, lived and worked there for six years, and has written five books about the country. Samwel considers it an honour to record a part of Surinamese music history. He says it is in line with his idea of telling other, less well-known stories about Suriname. In Sranan Gowtu, Samwel takes the reader on a journey to the origin of Surinamese music, which is mainly found in the gathering of peoples from
all over the world. European colonists, followed by enslaved West Africans and indentured labourers from India, Java and China all brought their musical culture to Suriname. In the twentieth century, people from Guyana, Brazil and elsewhere in the Caribbean added their own music traditions, Samwel says: ‘That led to a unique combination of musical styles. In kawina and kaseko music, the West African roots can clearly be heard. But current Surinamese bands will just as easily play reggae, Latin and salsa, as well as soul, disco, dancehall and R&B.’ The book Sranan Gowtu also contains stories about the complicated relations between the Netherlands and Suriname. People from Suriname often had a very difficult time trying to build a new life across the ocean in the 1960s and 1970s, no matter how famous they were in their home country. ‘Max Nijman played at sold-out venues in Paramaribo, but in the Netherlands he had to start from scratch. He had followed his wife to the Netherlands, working in Voorburg as an electrician. Through staff parties, his singing career gradually came back up to snuff.’ At the same time, the first generation of Surinamese people in the Netherlands also played an important role in the introduction of soul music in the Netherlands. Samwel: ‘In the 1970s, record stores in Amsterdam and Rotterdam started importing black American music. This import didn’t come straight from the US, but through Paramaribo. There, they had come to appreciate
soul and funk long before. What’s more, they were able to subtly combine it with their own music.’ Is a new breakthrough looming for Surinamese music? The developments in the music industry cannot be predicted, but Samwel does have a recommendation based on science: ‘Researchers of the American Harvard University talk of “the best kept secret in music history”. These music scholars even consider Surinamese music to have a richer potential than reggae, particularly because of its versatility. Who knows what’s possible with Sranan poku. The music is special and original enough for it.’
At the moment, Top Notch has released several CDs in the Sranan Gowtu series by heroes from Surinamese music history, such as Kid Dynamite, Max Woiski sr. and jr., Max Nijman, Lieve Hugo, Trafassi, Papa Touwtjie and Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars. New albums by Typhoon and Kenny B. were also released, as well as a second compilation album with Surinamese hits. At big events like the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Kwakoe Festival, a selection of Surinamese artists pay tribute to the music history.

Surifesta
Suriname has had a tradition of celebrating New Year’s Eve extravagantly for several decades now. In private circles, people have been saying for more than thirty years that Suriname shouldn’t try to compete with Brazil and the Caribbean islands during Carnival. Suriname should instead promote the period around Christmas and New Year’s Eve as a tourist attraction. As early as 1997, the Minister of TCT (Transport, Communication and Tourism) decided to support the private sector by bringing together the important players within the world of New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Surifesta Foundation was established, with as its aim the lasting development of the Owruyari period into an authentically Surinamese national and tourist event. It would appear that Surifesta has got the ball rolling. More and more activities are being organized, and it’s brimming with life and pleasure in December and early January.

FVAS, Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname In 1997, the visual artists got together. Again, there was a need for an umbrella organization for artists. The previous organization, the ‘Bond van Beeldende Werkers’, had fallen apart due to political points of view being too divergent. The artists wanted to unite again. But how they would imbue the organization with meaning and substance was a crucial question. When yet another impasse was reached at the end of a meeting, Anand Binda said: ‘Can’t we, as an artists’ collective, participate in Surifesta, which starts this year?’ The connection between Surifesta and CARIFESTA was soon made by the artists. Many Caribbean countries, where culture is linked to tourism, have a Ministry of Tourism and Culture. In 1972, the first edition of CARIFESTA was held to celebrate the multicultural wealth of the Caribbean countries. This festival is all about art and culture. With CARIFESTA, travel between the Caribbean countries was promoted.
A group of 16 artists decided to take part in the first Surifesta. The result was a mammoth painting of nearly 10 by 2.5 metres. The mammoth painting was displayed in the then fully open part of the Departure Hall at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport at Zanderij. Working together on this mammoth painting had been a huge success with the artists. ‘Seeing how we can cooperate this well, why don’t we establish an artists’ organization?’ the artists wondered. And thus it happened: in 1998, the FVAS, Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname was established.
A new painting The mammoth painting had been painted on plywood boards, hanging from a sweating outside wall. In 2014, Surinam Airways contacted the current FVAS chairman, George Struikelblok. After 17 years, the mammoth painting had partially rotted. Could it still be restored, or would it be better to create a new painting? The pros and cons were considered, and it was decided to make a new painting, which would be displayed in a new location. This location was in the air-conditioned indoor space of the departure hall, requiring different dimensions. The painting would be 15 metres wide and 1.50 metres tall, painted on canvas. Thirty artists took part in the creation of this Giant Painting. The theme was determined, and five groups were made. Each group chose its own subtheme. The main theme was: ‘The biodiversity and multicultural wealth of Suriname’. The subthemes were: Wildlife, Dance and Nature, Cultural Diversity, the city of Paramaribo, and Cultural Dance. First, preliminary studies were made. Next, these studies were used to determine the final composition, and each group was given a space of 3 metres. www.flyslm.com

The Happening On December 13 and 14, 2014, the moment was there: at the well-known Sidewalk Café ‘t VAT, a 15.5 metre canvas was put up.The place was brimming with energy and creativity. Honorary member Ron Flu complained about women painting over his head. Honorary member Soeki Irodikromo would be able to paint an entire 3 by 1.5 metre area within a morning, but being a considerate person, he gave the other five artists in his group enough space to show their creativity. A happening arose when 85-year-old honorary member Erwin de Vries added his contribution. Erwin can be found at ‘t VAT every night, where he sits at his own painted VAT table. For this occasion, he arrived a bit earlier than usual. Under enormous public interest, he put his ‘woman with firm buttocks and calves’ on the canvas within 10 minutes. There was no lack of interest: from young teenagers snapping pictures with their mobile phones, to professional photographers with huge lenses.

FESTIVALS
Suriname
Plan je vakantie rond een festival
Suriname festival land
Moengo Festival of Visual Arts 15 augustus t/m 20 september
Suriname Jazz Festival 22 t/m 25 oktober
Nationale Kunstbeurs eerst week november

Suriname
FESTIVALS
Plan your Suriname festival holiday country around a festival It’s always great to go on a holiday to a country where you’ll end up in the middle of a large festival. Plenty of fun, but above all a bit of the national culture is on display.A lot is happening in Suriname in the second half of the year. Here you’ll find a selection, which of course doesn’t include all the events on the agenda.
Moengo Festival of Visual Arts August 15 until September 20
The founder of this festival is artist Marcel Pinas, who travels the world with his visual artworks. Pinas was born in Marowijne, which suffered the consequences of a national war in the 1980s. In order to provide young people with opportunities for the future again, he started organizing an annual festival three years ago, which reaches its culmination in the third weekend of September. After music in 2013, and dance in 2014, visual arts take centre stage in 2015. No less than 34 artists from various countries will be active in Moengo during the months leading up to the festival. These artists have 15 works on display in the district, while there will also be new ‘artists in residence’ from Congo and Trinidad & Tobago. The festival starts on August 15, when an educational programme will be followed with schools, culminating in a work of street art. For an entire month, visitors can enjoy expositions, workshops and a spectacular finale from September 18 until 20. (more information: Moengo Festival of Music on Facebook)
Suriname Jazz Festival October 22 until 25
This year, the Suriname Jazz Festival is held for the 13th time. The festival’s strength is still the pure jazz forms to be listened to, with the own kaseko jazz always taking centre stage. Thanks to the cooperation with the respective embassies, there are jazz groups and artists from the United States, the Netherlands and Brazil. In recent years there have also been artists from French Guyana and from islands in the Caribbean. The festival lasts for four days, taking place in a different location each day. On the first day, the festival is opened with a jam by all participating artists. The second night, it’s time for Wine & Jazz. The third night is the main act.The festival is then closed on Sunday, with a stage for young, up and coming musicians. The festival is free, so getting there early is vital to secure a good spot. Although no names of artists are known yet at this point in time, a visit to the 13th Suriname Jazz Festival is definitely recommended. (more information: jazzfestivalsuriname.com / Suriname Jazz Festival on Facebook)
National Art Fair first week of November
The National Art Fair Foundation will organize the 50th National Art Fair in 2015. Main objectives are the promotion of art, improving the quality of the artworks, and appreciation of artists. The fair offers a platform for both young, up and coming artists, as well as for established artists. Artworks of wood and glass, paintings and visual artworks are on display and for sale. Recent years have even seen live artworks, and visitors can watch as works of art are being created. The National Art Fair is a great opportunity to take home a lasting memory of your stay in Suriname. So if you are in Suriname during the last week of October and/or the first week of November, do pay a visit to the garden of De Surinaamsche Bank in the Henck Arronstraat. The organization promises a fantastic cocktail to celebrate their 50th edition, the bank’s 150th anniversary, and the celebration of 40 years Independence in Suriname.
