EDUCATION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
When / What age do children in the Czech Republic start going to school? At the age of three children usually start going to kindergarten. / When children are three (years old), they start going to kindergarten. At the age of six/seven they start going to primary school.
/ When they are six/seven (years old), they start going to primary school. They study there until they are 15/16 (years old).
School attendance in the Czech Republic is compulsory for 9 years. Then children can stop studying and start
working. At the age of 11/13 some children leave primary schools and start going to grammar schools. At the age of 15/16 most children start going to secondary
schools.
Most students finish secondary school when they are 18/19. After secondary school they can start to study at university.
Most pupils / students attend state schools. They do not have to pay any school fees. Some pupils / students attend private schools. They have
to pay some schools fees.
What types of schools are there in the Czech Republic? In the Czech Republic there are: kindergartens / nursery schools (3 – 6/7) primary schools (basic / elementary) (6/7 – 15/16) Primary education lasts 9 years and it is divided into two substages: The first stage (1 – 5) (primary) The second stage (6 – 9) (it is also called lower secondary)
secondary schools (15/16 – 18/19) There is a variety of secondary schools in our country: grammar schools – general education – preparation for university studies special schools such as: nursing schools business academies technical schools agricultural schools etc.
vocational schools – training for practical jobs such as CNC operators, plumbers, toolworkers, shop assistants etc. Education at secondary schools usually lasts 4 years, at vocational schools 3 or 4 years.
universities/colleges Education at universities usually lasts from 3 to 6 years. You can study subjects suc as law, economics, medicine, foreign languages, computer science or engineering at schools such as Medical Faculty, Schools of Economics, technical universities etc.
What subjects do pupils/students have at school? At primary schools they have for example: maths, Czech, foreign language (English, German, …), biology, physics, chemistry, geography, history, civics, art, music, family education, etc.
At secondary schools they study for example: maths, Czech, foreign languages, history, physics, PE (Physical Education, IT (Information Technology), chemistry,
biology or civics.
At specialized schools they also study some specialized subjects e.g. technical drawing, technology, economics, psychology etc.
What is your favourite subject? Why? I (really) like … because …. / I‘m interested in … because … . (I like studying foreign languages because I like to communicate with people from foreign countries / travelling abroad / watching films in original version / listening to music / it helps me when I surf on the Internet / …)
Do you have to do any exams during your studies? At some secondary schools students have to do and pass entrance exams. Education at secondary schools usually lasts 4 years and is finished with a school-leaving exam called „Maturita“. The examination (the so called state Maturita) is held in May
and June. It is taken in four 2 subjects: Czech (essay + test) and maths (test) or foreign language (test, essay, oral exam).
Students have to pass the examination in other subjects (one or more), which are typical for the type of school they attend. If they pass the examination, they can apply for study at universities or colleges. Most universities require entrance exams. The university studies are finished with a state examination.
After 3 years you can get a Bachelor‘s Degree and after 5/6 years a Master‘s Degree.
Pupils at vocational finish with a final examination. It has a theoretical and practical part. If they pass the exam, they get
an apprenticeship certificate.
