Grammar Relative clauses The antecedent The antecedent is the noun the relative pronoun refers to. It can be: Het antecedent is het substantief waar het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord naar verwijst. Dat kan zijn:
• a person, een persoon,
The girl that did the white knuckle ride yelled all the time. The driver who took her in his car had never heard anyone yell so loud. • an animal or a thing een dier of een ding
The dog that is running around in the street is dangerous. The car which overturned during the ride is total loss.
1 In most cases you can use that as a relative pronoun. It sounds informal. In een groot aantal gevallen kun je that gebruiken als betrekkelijk voornaamwoord. Het klinkt informeel.
UNIT 8
Relative pronouns
The girl that disappeared is safe now. The car that the driver used was a Ford Focus. The boy that the police were looking for was found in a deserted building. 155
2 The relative pronoun that can be replaced by who when the antecedent is a person, which is possible when the antecedent is an animal or a thing. Het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord that kan vervangen worden door who als het antecedent een persoon is en which is mogelijk als het antecedent een dier of een ding is.
The man who took the young people in his car was an experienced driver. The car which the driver used was a Ferrari. 3 When the relative pronoun is not subject of the relative clause, but direct object or prepositional object, it can be dropped. This is common in spoken language. Als het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord niet het onderwerp van de zin is, maar lijdend voorwerp of voorzetselvoorwerp, kan het worden weggelaten. Dit gebeurt vaak in gesproken taal.
The man we met at the entrance was our driver. Can you describe the clothes you have to wear? Is this the boy the police want to talk to?
(direct object) (direct object) (prepositional object)
Note the end-position of the preposition in the relative clause. Let op de plaats van het voorzetsel in de betrekkelijke zin: achteraan.
Is this the car Uncle Herbert drove in? That is the person the police officer was talking to. Possessive 4 Also where and preposition + which can have the function of a relative pronoun. Ook where en voorzetsel + which kunnen fungeren als betrekkelijk voornaamwoord.
Is this the village where / in which the film was shot? 5 When the relative pronoun is possessive, use whose for persons, and of which (or whose) for animals and things. Als het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord bezittelijk is, gebruik whose voor personen en of which (of whose) voor dieren en dingen.
Is this the girl whose necklace was missing? The building of which the doors (whose doors) are open is the place where cars are checked. (Better is: The building with the open doors is the place where cars are checked.)

To Stonehenge After Jean Philippe finished his White Knuckle Ride, Chantal also tried her luck. The driver who took her in his car had never heard a girl yell so loud during the ride. But Chantal was happy to have tried it nevertheless. Now the party is underway to visit the Stonehenge monument, an hour’s driving to the north of Castle Combe. You are going to listen to the conversation Jean Philippe, Chantal and their uncle and aunt are having in the car on their way to Stonehenge. Stonehenge Stonehenge, the mysterious monument on the Salisbury Plain, has been a tourist attraction for more than 2,000 years. Every year about one million people visit the remains of the most famous prehistoric site in Europe. Archaeologists and other scientists have tried to find answers to the many questions raised by the Stonehenge monument. One thing is certain, however: we will never know everything about it.

Pudding Rules! Between Chipping Camden and the little town of Mickleton, three miles to the north, is the Three Ways House Hotel, housing the famous Pudding Club.

From an informal fun evening, the club meetings became more and more regular over the years. The Three Ways House Hotel itself has transformed into a pudding paradise with some of its 48 rooms being designed on pudding themes to provide a complete pudding package for visitors. To attend the group’s Friday night meetings, you do not have to be a member, but you do need a reservation. The evening starts at 7:30pm with an introduction to the rules and history of the club. After a choice of three modest main courses the main business of the evening begins when seven traditional puddings are paraded with ceremony - and cheers of anticipation. These will include well known favourites like Sticky Toffee and Date, as well as the more unusual such as Sussex Pond and Lord Randall’s Pudding. Puddings are served with custards and you can eat as much as you like, provided you stick to the rules. For example, you can only have one pudding on your plate at a time. Afterwards you can relax with coffee and tea while casting your vote for “Pudding of the Night”.

It all started in 1985, when frozen cheesecake and cakes tasting of cardboard d were becoming b i the th dessert choices at restaurants. People from the village would gather at the hotel and complain about the limp, frozen desserts, served at the end of a great English meal. “Instead of complaining about not being able to find the kind of pudding mum made, it was decided that one evening in the month would centre around just traditional puddings. And that is where it all began,” recalls Peter Henderson, the chairman of the Pudding Club.
Cost for the evening’s meal and pudding is 35 pounds. Rumour has it that they will be developing a “Wikipudia” and “iPud“. Of course, you can always browse WikiPIDia and read their pudding recipe of the day. (Abridged and adapted from http://farewelltravels.com/lib_2011-09-21_Cotswolds.html.)
