Dtex Systems shares similar investor DNA with security giants FireEye and Mobilelron, with the addition of Gaurav Garg, founding partner at Wing Venture Partners, and Promod Haque, senior managing partner at NVP, both joining the board. Originally founded in Australia witb early stage funding from the Australian Government's technology innovation programme, the company's expansion into the U.S. market comes at a time when 89 percent of companies admit that they
are at risk from the insider threat(l). Insider threats are the final frontier in cyber security, with a renewed focus driven by recent high-profile insider attacks, such as the Morgan Stanley data breach impacting approximately 350,000 wealth management clients and an AT&T breach in which an employee illegally accessed the personal information of an unspecified number of users.

A 15-year-old global insider threat protection company has raised $15 million in Series A funding led by Norwest Venture Partners and Wing Ventures. Having just moved its headquarters to the Silicon Valley from London, Dtex Systems is setting its sights on Fortune 500 companies amidst growing concerns over the dangers of insider threat. In 2000, Mohan Koo founded Dtex Systems in Australia to build endpoint security software for the Australian government. The company then expanded into Asia (http://wwwforbescom(..asiaLl and Europe, and became profitable in 2013. Dtex Systems uses big data analytics and lightweight end point security software to detect and predict insider threat, while prioritizing employee privacy. Dtex had 60 employees globally with offices in Australia, the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentina, South Africa, and most recently, the United States. Now, with its first round of funding, the company is hoping to establish itself in this new security market. "For us right now, it's taking what we've been able to prove for some of the biggest companies and businesses throughout Asia and Europe, and expanding on that to hit Fortune 500 companies here in the U.S.," explained Dlex CEO Mohan Koo. Major breaches like Target and Morgan Stanley have helped raised awareness about insider threat in the United States. Breaches caused by insider threat can be both malicious acts by employees (such as stealing sensitive data) or accidental lapses in security (such as clicking on a malicious link and infecting the company server). "Insider threat is something we started focusing on 10 years ago, but it's really only in the past 12 months that we've seen it take off in the security space," said Koo. "For the first time, we're seeing some of the biggest companies in the world include insider threat as a budgetary line item, and hiring people specifically with the insider threat title." When Promod Haque, senior managing partner at Norwest Venture Partners started researching Dtex as a possible investment, he says he soon realized that insider threat was a growing threat. "As we began to do our due diligence, it became very clear that this was a problem that was across verticals," Haque said. "Everyone talked about the problems they've had with internal breaches and insider activity and how it was essential for them from a security perspective to find a product like Dtex and deploy it." Koo says Dtex's path as a company from Australia to Asia and Europe before entering the Silicon Valley-where so many companies start-has shaped both the company's product and perspective on privacy. mex first entered the Asian market in 2004 to help major banks who had opened call centers in developing countries in Asia and were having problems with credit card numbers being sold on the black market. Because of the poor infrastructure in these countries, Dtex learned the importance of having a lightweight and scalable software that didn't collect more data than necessary. This proved to be a helpful when the company decided to expand into Europe where strict data privacy laws prevent companies from collecting too much data on employees. The company's software is now compliant for every country in the world straight out of the box. "While privacy hasn't been as big of a concern for U.S. companies as European companies, that's definitely changing," Koo said. "We're very well positioned to overachieve initially, and then as privacy becomes a more regulated issue in the United States, we're on point for that." Continue

Traditional security mechanisms have leveraged rule, pattern, signature and algorithm-based approaches to detect threats, and that's a problem, according to Paul Stokes, CIG of the University of Victoria in British Columbia. "These approaches require constant care and feeding to identify and mitigate security threats," he said. "I think machine learning changes the game." The benefits of applying machine learning to security include faster Identification of vulnerabilities, increased detection rates and the discovery of attack vectors that were previously undetectable, according to Mr. Stokes.

Up until now, most cybersecurity products have worked by creating rules for detecting malicious software or suspicious activity. The problem is that those rules are built on events that happened in the past. wIt's based on what you know, not what you don't know.~ said Avivah Utan, vice president and distinguished analyst at research firm Gartner Inc.
Most of the products currently on the market are better described as machine learning than true artificial intelligence, said Ms. Litan. With machine learning, algorithms learn from data. Ms. Utan estimates that by 2018 at least 25% of self-discovered enterprise breaches will be fO!Jnd using these techniques. which Gartner calls user behavior analytlcs. Dtex is using machine learning to try and stop high-risk employee behavior and Insider threats. wWe are about analyzing changes in behavior and predicting risks and breaches before they happen; Mohan Koo, founder and CEO of Dtex Systems, told CIO Journal. The software can Identify people who are about to leave the company and which employees appear likely to take company documents or data with them when they go. The company does this by pushing lightweight software agents called microagents to user devices. Instead of collecting content of conversations, it tracks metadata such as the location where an employee accessed email messages or the time and date a call was made. By applying machine learning algorithms to metadata, it can detect changes in user behavior that may suggest an employee Is getting ready to leave the company with company data. Brighterion, which has worked with cHents such as MasterCard Inc. to detect credit card fraud, is applying its experience to the realm of cybersecurity. Brighterion's software uses smart agents to track individual patterns of card usage to detect fraud. It also can track how employees use their IT systems at work, thereby detecting unusual activity that may reveal a cyberattack or rogue employee. Brighterion's software, which it classifies as artificial intelligence, can even detect unusual behavior of system administrators like Edward Snowden, said Akli Adjaoute, founder and CEO. That's because its software agents can learn how each employee uses his computer. It turns out that the way people type, the files employees access at specific times of day, the types of emaits they read and other patterns of use all add up to a unique footprint that makes it impossible for a cybercriminal to impersonate an employee. WSnowden did not just arrive the first day and steal information," Dr. Adjaoute told CIO Journal. Machine learning might have detected his efforts before he had a chance take data out the door.
