The World Has Opened out
Kinyílt a világ
Comenius program supports schools in elementary and secondary education. The person giving his name to it is a 17th century Czech philosopher urging school education open to the world and the society, and so being able to open wide horizons. According to these aims Comenius program helps schools to establish partnerships and to make the exchange of experiences easier.
Névadója, a XVII. században élt cseh filozófus a környező világra nyitott, tág horizontokat kínáló iskolai oktatást szorgalmazott. Egyeztető, felmérő, munkarendés programkészítő tanácskozások során kialakult a két évig tartó projekt részletes programja. A második projekttalálkozónak a román iskola adott otthont április 11-15-ig.
From the school events of the last autumn you could already learn that we had started a two-year-long project called “The Song of the Hammer” in the framework of which we work together with an Italian and a Romanian school. Our cooperation is aimed at creating a common play by the end of the second year. The project started in October 2010, and the representatives of the three countries first met in Pécs. Information about the partners’ needs, aims, and local conditions were shared, discussed and harmonised in order to make a detailed work schedule for the two-year-long program. We finished our meeting with a vivid cultural show. The second project meeting took place at the Romanian school from 11 to 15 April 2011. Our school was represented by 8 professors and 11 students. The goal of this meeting was to discuss and work out in sections the details of the last tasks and also, the process of our meeting in Genoa. The few days long meeting in Kolozsvár did not only consist of work but a 2
collective sightseeing and a longer excursion as well. We were fascinated by the wonderful environment, the eye-catching Transylvanian landscape even while travelling. During sightseeing and the excursion we could get to know the historical values and natural wonders of the area.
In the frames of a theatrical programme we could get an insight to the traditional dance and music culture of the host country the last night. Translated by: Ágnes Kanizsai 11/2. The project “The Song of the Hammer” in the frameworks of Comenius program proves that cooperation between schools with students of different mother tongue is possible. At the same time working together with foreign partners makes us realize that the project can really “open the world” for us only if communication problems between the partners are minimized.
During the consecutive meetings professors and students can get a deeper and deeper understanding of the importance of foreign language skills, as they experience personally what it means to use English in real life situations they had only “spoken” in language lessons before.
As for me, I would really like to avoid the inconvenient moments caused by my lack 3
of English knowledge by having some English lessons after the school year.
okozott - azzal, hogy amint vége a tanévnek, „veszek néhány” angol nyelvleckét.

Nagyvárad (in Romanian: Oradea)
Nagyvárad
On 11 April 2011 our team left for Kolozsvár (in Romanian: Cluj-Napoca) hoping to win. On our way to Cluj we stopped several times but the most impressive place was Nagyvárad for me.
The foundation of Nagyvárad in the Dacian and the Roman period – between about 350 BC to about 275 AD – has remained a mystery. According to the Hun and Avar findings the valley of Körös became one of the routes of the migration of nations after this period. The area together with Ulpianum, the predecessor of the city, was occupied by the Hungarians under Árpád in 896 AD. We arrived to Oradea at about one o’clock in the afternoon and we stopped on the bank of the river Körös and went sightseeing in the city centre with a lot of beautifully renovated buildings. We visited Szent László (in Romanian: Saint Ladislaus) Church built in the 18th century and looked at the oldest surviving altar of the city can be seen. It was made in 1730.
Körülnéztünk a gyönyörű belvárosban, ahol sok mindent felújítottak. Láttuk a 18. században épült Szent László templomot,
We also looked at the Black Eagle Palace – the former Black Eagle Hotel – that was built between 1907 and 1909 on the base 4
of the former Black Eagle Inn. The entrances of the ensemble in three different streets are connected by a glass covered passage. The palace designed by Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab is one of the most beautiful secessionist buildings of Transylvania. The coloured leaded window-pane depicting the black eagle which was the symbol of the city were made in the local Neumann workshop.
amelyben a város 1730-ból való, legrégibb fennmaradt oltára látható.
From the point of view of Hungarian art one of the most significant facts in relation with the city is that Endre Ady, the famous poet moved here in 1899 and enjoyed the city's fizzing cultural life for some years. He became a journalist for “Freedom” that was the most prestigious and wellfinanced newspaper at the time. However, his critical article written about the social injustice and the misery of workers titled “A little walk” made his own paper turn against him, so he joined the competitor Nagyváradi Napló soon. Working here he became a good journalist and his prosaic style was developed. He also published a new book of verse titled “Once More” – without getting a positive response of importance however.
Nagyvárad magyar művészeti vonatkozásainek egyik legjelentősebbike, hogy 1899-től néhány évig itt élt Ady Endre - élvezve a város pezsgő kulturális életét. A kormánypárti Szabadság (ezidőtájt Nagyvárad legtekintélyesebb és anyagilag legerősebb lapja) belső munkatársa lett. A társadalmi igazságtalanságról és a munkásnyomorról írt kritikus cikke (Egy kis séta) azonban ellene fordította saját lapját, így hamarosan a lapversenytárs Nagyváradi Naplóhoz csatlakozott. Jó újságíróvá vált, magyar prózai stílusa itt fejlődött ki. 5
Turned into a good journalist, his Hungarian prosaic style grew here. He published a new volume of poetry in 1903 once more on a title - without echo.
Új verskötetet is kiadott 1903-ban Még egyszer címen - visszhangtalanul. A váradi séta után továbbindultunk Kolozsvár felé, hogy ott valóban győzelmet arassunk: partnereinkkel együtt.
After our walk in Nagyvárad we continued our way to Kolozsvár to gain a victory: not against but together with our partners.

The King's Pass
A Király-hágó
On our way to Cluj-Napoca we stopped at the King's Pass. The panorama was simply beautiful, and also naturalness surrounding people there.
A Kolozsvárra vezető út során megálltunk a Király-hágónál. II. A hágó magassága 582 m. A Király-hágó alatti településen egy 1791ben épült ortodox fatemplom található. A falut más néven Bucsának is hívják. 1910-
Here is some data about the place: the King's Pass is a village (called Bucsa, in Romanian: Bucea until 1899) in Romania, in the county of Kolozs (in Romanian: Judeţul Cluj). It is situated 33 km northwest of Bánffyhunyad (in Romanian: Huedin), under the King's Pass, on the right side of the river Sebes-Körös (in Romanian: Crişul Repede). Its history: As earlier the part of the road from Nagyvárad (in Romanian: Oradea) to Kolozsvár (in Romanian: Cluj-Napoca) ending with Vársonkolyos (in Romanian: Şuncuiuş) led through the Valley of SebesKörös and the spring floods endangered it, a new road – starting from Bucsa uphill towards Nagybáród (in Romanian: Borod) – was built from 1780. As Joseph II. had 6
stayed here earlier when he had been a crown prince a the new road was connected to his name. According to another explanation the so called gyepűelve* possessed by the king spread along this way. The height of the pass is 582 m.

It is situated 6 km far from Bánffyhunyad. It was named after the spring of the SebesKörös behind “The Spring of the Cris Inn”. It was firstly mentioned in documents as Crisfeu in 1276. In 1910 it had a population of 1073 mainly Hungarian people. Until the treaty of Trianon it belonged to the Bánffyhunyadi district of Kolozs County. In 1992 it – together with its joint-villages – had 1780 Hungarian and 395 Romanian residents.

A trianoni békeszerződésig Kolozs vármegye Bánffyhunyadi járásához tartozott. 1992ben társközségeivel együtt 1780 lakosából 1385 magyar és 395 román volt. Látnivalók: Körösfői templom: A négy fiatornyas református templom 1764-ben épült, középkori templom alapokra. Ekkor készült kazettás mennyezete is, melyet nagy részben Umling Lőrinc festett. A templomban megtekinthető a II. Rákóczi György által a falunak ajándékozott török szőnyeg.

Drama Games: Let’ Make Learning Fun
On Wednesday morning we met a drama professor who played with us and taught us a few activities and techniques suitable for relying on preparing for our performance. There were some individual exercises in which everybody had to concentrate on their own bodies including the tiniest parts like fingers. The focus of other games was concentration, wideawakeness, cooperation and interaction with mates. For instance, in one of the activities we worked in pairs: each with a long bamboo-cane held by the index finger of both players at the end. They had to move together without dropping the bamboo-cane on the floor. The better the partners feel each other and the tool, the more complex and courageous their movements became. Translated by Réka Uzán

In our last activity we improvised short drama scenes based on roles. We were also allowed to use different sounds in this game. The participants – majority of which was not used to performing in front of an audience – were greatly challenged by this task as they had to present pretty unusual meetings according to role cards (e.g. a giraffe and a conductor). Anyway all of us had great fun watching these short shows.
Although we were very many (40-50 players) our intense interest made us able to keep discipline, work efficiently and – at last but not at least – really cheerfully.

Házsongárd Cemetery
Házsongárdi temető
The cemetery of Házsongárd lies south of the medieval castle walls of Kolozsár, on the hill of Házsongárd. A lot of tourists visit this resting place for many of Hungary’s greatest poets and writers, in order to honour the memory of all the famous people resting here. Disregarding the religious and ethnical differences, Hungarians, Romanians and Saxons buried their kin here alike throughout the centuries. Its beautiful location and its memorials made it famous already in the 19th century.
A Házsongárdi temető a középkori Kolozsvár várfalaitól délre fekvő Házsongárd nevű domboldalon található.
Our first visit to the cemetery didn’t bring the expected success. Firstly, we had a quite gloomy, muddy weather, and secondly, we could only find the resting place of Jenő Dzsida. Jenő Dzsida was a Transylvanian poet, a spectacular personality of Hungarian poetry between the two world wars. He became famous for not only his poems, but also his lyrical studies and articles. Unfortunately we weren’t able to find our second destination: the tomb of János ApáczaiCsere even after long hours of walking and searching, so after all, sadly, we had to sound retreat for the day, and had to return to our hotel.
Dsida Jenő erdélyi költő a két világháború közötti magyar líra kíváló egyénisége volt, aki nemcsak verseivel, hanem irodalmi tanulmányaival és újságcikkeivel is maradandót alkotott.
Finally next day professor Sarlós, Bence the driver and I – sacrificing our free time – attempted to find the tombstone of János Apáczai-Csere one more time. Apáczai (1625-1659) who was a philosophy and education writer and also a pioneer of 11
Hungarian education, civilization and nurture affairs, created harmony between Transylvanian, European and World-wide virtues with his work. We had luck: after getting directions from a local worker, in no less than 5 minutes we were taking photos of the tombstone of Apáczai.
After this we could leave the cemetery satisfied, just to head out to the next pleasurable program, the Romanian folklore performance. It was especially enjoyable for me, that I had been able to see the tomb of the great educator of the 17th century, and also the namesake of my old primary school, and I would gladly recommend everyone to visit the cemetery of Hozsongárd.

Torda (in Romanian: Turda) Salt Mine
Tordai sóbánya
On Thursday we – together with the Italian and the Romanian teams participating in the program – went to Torda Salt Mine. Behind the entrance there is a 900 meters long tunnel leading to the adits. The greyish-white salt wall of the tunnel is gradually changing into ebony black and smooth, because in the summer warm air flows in, vapour condenses onto the cool walls and salty solution runs down to the foot of the walls where salt crystallizes. Therefore the lower part of the black walls is covered with white salt crystals. The first adit where we stopped is called Echo Room, where our call was echoed 18 times. In the side galleries of the tunnel we could see the remains of different equipments used in the period of salt mining, for example the so called “horse lift” operated by four pair of horses was used to pull up big salt blocks to the surface. The shafts were illuminated by tallow candles. No explosives, only human labour was used to mine salt.
A programban részt vevő olasz, román csapatokkal közösen, csütörtök délelőtt utunk a tordai sóbányába vezetett.
Például a sótömböket a „kepel” nevű eszközzel húzták felszínre, mely lovak segítségével jött mozgásba. Az aknákban faggyúviaszos gyertyákkal, és fáklyákkal
The roll-calls for workers were held in the Altar Room before and after work. There is an altar carved in the salt wall. Here the miners, their leaders and the local 13
noblemen had worship with a priest once a week. The latter came down here using nicely decorated wooden stair especially made for them. That is why it is called “The Rich Men’s Staircase”.
Utóbbiak a szépen díszített falépcsőn ereszkedtek le a bányába. Ezért a lépcső a "Gazdagok lépcsője" nevet kapta. Utunk következő állomása a trapéz alakú Rudolf akna.
Our next stop was the rectangular – with a trapezoid profile – Rudolf Chamber. When I – having overcome my agoraphobia – looked down at the depth of 50 metres, I had butterflies in my stomach. We started our way down the wooden stair leading through 13 floors with a mark of the year in which the salt was dug in each. The fact that it contains a big wheel, a mini golf course, a table tennis and a billiard table and a lot of other things can show its unbelievable sizes. In Theresa Chamber situated 20 metres deeper you can even boat as it has a 4-8 metres deep and 70 metres in diameter saline lake in it. Today the beautifully renovated mine homes medical treatments, cultural events, exhibitions and concerts. It was a great experience for me: this place is really worth visiting! Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca) – Sightseeing
Kolozsvár – Városnézés
Cluj-Napoca is a city in Romania. It is the historical centre and the most considerable city of Transylvania, the county town of Kolozs County. According to the census taken in 2002 it was the third most populous city in Romania after Bucharest and Jászvásár (in Romanian: Iaşi). With its two theatres, two opera houses, eleven higher education institutions and several secondary school Kolozsvár is an important cultural centre of the country.
Számos műemléke közül a legnevezetesebbek a Szent Mihály-templom, előtte Fadrusz János Mátyás szobrával, a Farkas utcai református templom, illetve a Bánffypalota. Bethlen-bástya néven is ismert.
Kolozsvár used to be one of the seven fortification cities giving the German name (Seibenbürgen) to Transylvania. The city is famous for being the King Matthias’s and János Bocskai’s (Prince’s of Transylvania) and also the cradle of unitarianism. The most remarkable of the numerous monuments of the city are Saint Michael Church with the statue of King Matthias made by János Fadrusz in front of it, the Farkas street Reformed Church and the Bánffy Palace. We went on a sightseeing tour on Tuesday. Unfortunately the weather was rainy and cold but it did not stop us from discovering the city and its sights. Our first stop after leaving the Romanian school was the Tailors’ Bastion. This is one of the few remaining monuments of the twenty-four bastions and gate towers of former Kolozsvár.
15
It was named after the guild of tailors which was responsible for the maintenance and the protection of the tower. It is also known as the Bethlen Bastion.
Innen egy kisebb séta után a kolozsvári Román Nemzeti Színházhoz (korábban a Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház épülete) értünk, ami a kolozsvári román operának is otthona.
A színházzal szemben meglátogattuk a kolozsvári ortodox katedrálist.
After a brief walk we reached the Romanian National Theatre (earlier: the Hungarian State Theatre of Kolozsvár) homing Cluj Opera as well. We also visited the Orthodox Cathedral which is situated opposite the theatre. This building stands in the middle of Avram Lancu square, and it is the seat of Rév, Felek and Kolozsvár Orthodox Bishopric.
Miután kívülről-belülről alaposan szemügyrevettük a műemléket, elindultunk felkeresni Mátyás király gyermekkori házát.

After looking at everything here we left for the house where King Matthias lived in his childhood. This oldest bunk- building of Kolozsvár can be found in the old city and it was restored in 1940 by architect Károly Kós. Currently it is the building of the University of Art and Design.
A kolostor jelenleg a Sigismund Toduţă Zenelíceum egyik épülete. A templom hivatalosan a Havas Boldogasszony temploma, a népnyelv azonban csak „barátok templomaként” emlegeti.
Translated by Nikoletta Jankovics 11/2. After that we visited the Franciscan Church and Monastery of Kolozsvár situated only a few 10 meters far from King Matthias’s birthplace. This ensemble of buildings can be found on Carolina Square, in the old town, the oldest part of the city. At the moment the monastery is the building of Sigismund Toduţă Music School. The church is offically called the Church of "Havas Boldogasszony”, but the inhabitants call it the Friars’ Church. In front of the building, on the Museum square there is a monument called Carolina Column. It was erected in the memory of the visit of king Francis I. and queen Carolina Augusta, his wife in 1831. The column’s carvings of the column were made by Mihály and Antal Schindler, local craftsmen, the iron crown of the eagles by János Henczenberger locksmith and the reliefs by sculptor Josef Klieber from Vienna.
Az épület előtt, a Múzeum téren található a Karolina-oszlop. Ez I. Ferenc király, és negyedik felesége, Karolina Auguszta királyné 1817-es látogatásának emlékére készült 1831-ben. Az oszlop faragása a helybeli Schindler Mihály és Antal mesterek műve, a sasok vaskoszorúját Henczenberger János lakatos készítette. 17
The monument was originally placed on the main square and was moved to its present place in 1898. During our sightseeing we got real exhausted. Lots of us did almost die of thirst, others could not feel their legs, but anyway: it was good to see and be a tourist.
A domborművek Josef Klieber bécsi szobrász alkotásai.

Fortress of Vajdahunyad (in Romanian: Hunedoara)
Vajdahunyad vára Péntek délelőtt, útban hazafelé betértünk a Hunyadi várba. A várból megnéztük, milyen a kilátás a városra. Gyönyörű volt!
On Friday morning, on our way home, we popped into Hunyadi Castle. When we got off the bus, everybody rushed towards the fortress with their cameras. We had never passed such a huge bridge before! We saw a large castle gate in front of us. Entering the castle we first went to a room where there were old cases and furniture. After that we walked to the „Ladies Room” where the ladies and women were making needlework. We could see old fresco remains on the wall of rooms and saloons. We could see the details of János Hunyadi’s birth on a fresco series. We walked through the Knight’s Room and the Exhibition Room. We looked at the city’s view. It was beautiful! We saw the well having been dug by the Turks due to the Hungarians’ feint. Taking a walk in the 18
castle was good, because – just think it over! – Hunyadi family and many peasants, bondsmen and merchants lived and worked there in the past. All, who can, should visit the castle to experience what we did at those magnificent moments.

“Journey Rhymes” – Written by us: on the coach, on our way home from Cluj-Napoca. Teachers: We are the teachers, Not donkeys. If we were donkey, We would only eat hominy!
Students: We do not eat hominy, We haven’t lost our sense completely. If we lost our mind entirely, We would eat every(thing)!
If you don’t like hominy, Don’t dream about boys in Italy! What’s named in Genoa, polenta, That’s called in Hungary puliszka.
We are not crazy, Rather brainy! We hide our yawning, If we are sneezing.
If you hide your yawning, … And you think, before acting, During the salt mine touring, You would forget about smoking!
Smoking isn’t titty, It’s just a bit smelly! And the salt mine is a cool thing, Unfortunately: Non-smoking.
In Cluj, in the cemetery, The weather was a bit rainy. Though we searched carefully, We could find Apáczai.
The Mountains in Turda are lofty, Usually in winter, snowy. Among them our words are ringing, Because we always think before acting.
We’re proud of you, Even if your mouth sometimes huge. If you slept more, You would be in a better form.
Somebody told us today, What a house needs is a female. We won the verbal sparring, So we decided, to end thins thing!
Headmaster: The last words are yours? These are just rumors! Translation, Modification & Literature Check made by: Péter Miszlai 11/5. 20
Úti felelgetős – Írta a “csapat” a buszon, Kolozsvárról hazafelé. Tanárok Mi vagyunk a tanarak, Nem vagyunk mi szamarak!
Büszkék is vagyunk mi rátok, Néha ugyan nagy a szátok! Hogyha többet aludnátok, Jobban hoznátok a formátok.
Igazgató úr: Utolsó szó a tiétek? De csak azt úgy hiszitek!

‘Cuz we need a team!
Mert kell egy csapat
This is the key sentence of a movie of my childhood, in which Ede Mihalik lived his dream, and created a football team, the TEAM, which is embodied in a legendary football team of the thirties. This film (Football of the great old times ) is quite timely also today.
Ifjúságom alapfilmjének kulcsmondata, melyben a lelkes mosodás, Mihalik Ede megszervezi élete álmát, a CSAPATOT, mely egy legendás harmincas-évekbeli focicsapatban ölt testet. A film ( “Régi idők focija” címmel) ma is időszerű.
During our trip to Kolozsvár I was thinking about the movie quite a lot, and also about that famous sentence. Because it simply cannot work: without a team, without common goals, without listening to each other. Although we saw a lot of beautiful things, the beauty of nature waiting for spring to come, the carving of the forces of nature in the mountain sides and the salt mines. We had the chance to admire the elegant rows of houses of once great cities, the glory of churches clouded in mystery, the castle walls oozing history, or simply to listen silently in the intimate stillness of the graveyards.
Yet we gained the most wonderful experience trough being together, taking care for each other, we did this, we could do this, we wanted to do this disciplined and precisely. It was good, being together, being with you,
…’Cuz we need a team!
