In Belgium, #WATCG invited ten families through photography, text and film to testify to their commitment and dedication concerning climate change. Some of the participants are offbeat. Are not animals just as relevant as humans? Surely we are all embarked on the same Noah’s Ark? The Belgian testimonials will join their French, Danish, Italian, German, Turkish and British counterparts in a joint #WATCG exhibition due to coincide with the international climate conference in Paris in December 2015.

For the past 35 years, Marie d’Hoop has been managing an area of forest in the region of Marche-en-Famenne. She contributes, in her modest way, to biodiversity balance and CO2 capture through her discerning management of the forest’s different species of trees (mainly pines, beech and oaks). It is an expertise she shares with her daughter Stéphanie and her grandson Jérôme, who contributes to the heavy labour. Despite the fact that a tree only reaches maturity after 80, 100 or even 120 years, Marie feels responsible for her decisions. She is extremely grateful to her father for leaving her the family legacy and knows her choices will benefit generations to come.

Since Cécile left her professional career behind her she has found a new work-life balance through her involvement in the Chant des Cailles allotments in Watermael-Boitsfort, Brussels. In the spirit of neighbourhood sharing, Cécile attends to the plots, cultivates, cares for the soil, and shares convivial moments. Agro-ecology, permaculture, vegetable gardening, sheep rearing, cheese-making: there is so much to learn and to teach! The allotment garden is indeed an educational tool - especially for those local schoolchildren who have their own plots. Some even share them with their grandparents. Cécile and Camille’s precious moments at the allotment serve as inspiration for writing their collaborative fairy-tales!

Baby elephant, Nang Faa, was born at the Domaine de Cambron on May 20 2015. Her birth coincided with the inauguration of the Pairi Daiza Foundation, set up to commit to giving back to nature as much as we take through positive action and awareness campaigns. In France, the Foundation aims to help re-introduce the cinereous vulture in the Verdon. In Indonesia, together with the Lini NGO, it is involved in the reconstruction of the coral barrier around the island of Bali by re-introducing young corals onto artificial reefs. The Foundation is also supporting scientific research to find an elephant herpes vaccine - an action which will undoubtedly benefit Nang Faa, her 12 year old mother Farina and her 33 year old grandmother, Khaing Hnin Hnin, not to mention their brothers and sisters in captivity or out in the wild.

In Belgium, most of us spend half of our time in our homes. With Evolias, Marc is building healthy housing using natural and locally sourced building materials such as sheep wool, hemp, wood, chalk, clay or soya-based coverings, without additives. Based in Antwerp, agricultural engineer turned sustainable building expert Marc works on integrated solutions for energy and water management without neglecting home comforts. You just have to see his maze of wood-heated water heating pipes or lagoon waste water systems to believe them! His sharp analytic thinking comes from his mother Anne-Marie, and he has, in turn, handed down his strong convictions on biodiversity to his daughter Emilie.

On November 14 2015, alongside 30 other writers invited to address the National Assembly of France on climate change, François Emmanuel focused on the notion of denial. Denial by a dominant segment of the population – people who cannot accept the clear fact that human activity is threatening life itself on Earth. The author of “La passion Savinsen” feels that there is a real threat that this stance will spread in such a fast-moving world. Echoing his concern, daughter-in-law Pascale is associated with Rochefort en transition by actively taking part in the creation of a free thinking school and by involving herself with a local direct farm business. Flore, their granddaughter and daughter, is no doubt blessed with a good dose of their common sense as she starts off on life’s journey.

Eddy Pussemier manages a herd of 50 Holstein dairy cows spread over 90 hectares. Back in 2008, Eddy’s life turned upside-down when he learned that the pesticides he was using may well be the cause of his Parkinson’s disease. Since that day, he has taken on a new path and started adhering to the laws of nature. His farm’s trees and hedges have become key to the natural balance of the site: shade for the cattle and cover and refuge for the small animals. Eddy produces all of the cattle fodder for his herd. His wife Annie sells some of the milk produced in the farm shop and Jonas is slowly taking the helm by involving himself in the genetic quality of the herd. With an air of confidence, little Noémie calls the cows by their names – proof in itself that this family of farmers is committed to nature and its preservation.

From his childhood memories in Agadir, Fadel remembers his father stacking up produce from the family’s vegetable patch onto his bicycle to sell at the town market. Since immigrating to Belgium in 2000, with his wife Fatima and their three children, Fadel has reforged his link with nature. Next to the Résidence de L’Espoir, an exemplary eco-building he shares with 13 other families, Fadel has been busy transforming a derelict dumpsite into a luxurious vegetable plot, smack in the middle of Molenbeek’s public housing estate. He seized the opportunity to involve an army of volunteers such as his neighbour Raoul and shares his passion with his son Karim. L’Espoir may well, over time, become a sustainable neighbourhood.

To reach the Escaille nature reserve near Gembloux, you have to following the RAVeL trail path (ex-railway line 147). This path takes you to a vast high-stemmed apple tree orchard, filled with old varieties! Each individual apple tree is sponsored by a particular family. The orchard is surrounded by a network of strips of grassland and meadows that are delineated by bee-forage hedges. These hedges not only serve as a haven of nectar for the wild and domesticated honeybees but also act as a shelter to colonies of insects – all of which fight off the pests that harm the fruit. Managed by Natagora and partially crowdfunded by Be Planet, this 10-hectare site is a fascinating case study that reveals the extent to which humans depend on nature. Oliver is convinced, Laurent is sceptical and Léon is quite simply joyful!

Willy manages a fleet of fishing boats at Ostend on the Belgian coast. He is witnessing firsthand the marine reserve migration towards the North and the proliferation of invasive species such as certain jellyfish and the Japanese oyster. He knows that the aggressive fishing of the past - specifically sea-bed trawling for hidden skate, sole, plaice and turbot - is no longer sustainable. He believes that responsible fishing is crucial and that this can be achieved by using environmentally-friendly materials and more precise fishing methods, in partnership with the scientific community. Fish farming will also need to be limited. Willy would like sustainable fishing methods to be taught to the younger generation. Without their dedication to sustainability, he cannot see a future for the fishing trade and fishermen families on the Belgian coast.

Belgium’s largest wind farm to date was erected on the Thornton sandbank in 2008. 183 offshore turbines are currently up and running and supplying 700.000 households with energy! By 2020, the North Sea wind energy capacity will have tripled and will be able to cover 10% of Belgium’s energy consumption. As a DEME Group engineer, Peter coordinates the entire process, from design phase through to the completion of the wind farm and continually innovates to improve efficiency. Transporting the turbine energy from 30 km off the coast is already a technological exploit in itself… Long-term sustainable energies will inevitably allow us to quit fossil 2 fuels. Moreover, as an unexpected consequence, the 55 km wind farm has become an important haven for marine animals. Alfons and Jeppe are extremely proud of Peter’s job!
