Is attention paid to skill and to a love of the profession? Is there scope for a smile or even a hearty laugh? Although education is now forced to give priority to efficiency, the contact between master and student is evaporating. Studium Generale tries to bridge this gap with its programme of speakers who inspire their listeners, enter discussion with their audience and look over the borders of professional fields. And who broach subjects concerning the background of the daily news, and offer a historical framework that makes patterns appear in the seemingly loose sand of the events that surround us, whether on a small or large scale. No credits are given for attending the Studium Generale activities. But maybe that is not such a bad thing. You cannot award points for general development. See it more as something that contributes to your development as a human being – an asset beyond price. Even more important, however, is the freedom of thought. Especially at a university.
Universities should function not only as a source of knowledge, but also as a source Jacques Reiners of inspiration. That is a fine ideal. But how does it work in practice? What con- Studium Generale tiguous knowledge is provided and what information is there about the context of this knowledge?

Critical Thinking, Pitfalls and Possibilities Prof. Johan Braeckman Philosopher, Ghent University Tues 15, 22 and 29 Sep, 6 and 13 Oct – 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Karl Dittrich Hall, Student Services Centre, Bonnefantenstraat 2 In this series, we investigate why people are so vulnerable to mental infections through totally irrational beliefs. Insights developed in social psychology, informal logic or neuroscience, for example, make clear how quickly human reasoning can go wrong, and how easy it is to make the wrong connections and statistical estimates and to generalise too quickly. Scientists doing research are often better armed against the dangers of infection through irrational and pseudo-scientific views. However, they are very good at rationalising the wrong views, picked up along the way, which often makes them stick to bad ideas much longer. Pseudo-scientific theories will be discussed alongside historical and current

examples of apparently scientific and objective views that turned out to be infected by fallacies or wrong assumptions. The differences between science and pseudo-science and between rational and irrational thinking will be clarified. Although a purely rational way of thinking is most probably unattainable and possibly something we should not be aiming for, we can gain better insight into how our brain processes information and creates false realities. Those wishing to improve their thinking can learn from the insights of the discipline known as Critical Thinking. The individual lectures 1. Critical Thinking: General Principles (15 Sept) 2.
Of is god dood?
Wed 23 September, 8 pm Auditorium Minderbroedersberg 4-6

On 11 July 1995, the Bosnian Serb general Mladic captured the Srebrenica enclave, where 40,000 refugees were living, and which had been declared a ‘safe area’ by the UN. Thousands of Bosnian men were killed. Tonight, Joris Voorhoeve, Minister of Defence at that time, discusses questions like: Could this genocide have been prevented and how? What was the role of the UN, of the Netherlands and of the allies? Have we learned lessons from this failure? How can the international community protect civilians in times of war? Voorhoeve does not avoid the most painful questions, even the most painful for himself.
Joris Voorhoeve is author of Veilige gebieden (Safe areas).

Dreams, Morality The Indonesian and Terrorism Politicide of 196566: How Could it Rico Sneller, PhD Assistant Professor of Philosophical Have Happened? Anthropology, Leiden University Mon 28 September, 8 pm Auditorium Minderbroedersberg 4-6 In many religious traditions, especially in Islam, dreams play a prominent role in decision-making. Tonight, Rico Sneller will present some thoughts on the relation between dreams and terrorist acts, with regard to inspiration, psychoanalysis, and morality. Many Islamic suiciders have reported inspiring dreams that have stimulated their actions. This should come as no surprise, since those preparing for execution will find themselves in extreme mental conditions. Even if suicidal acts can be accounted for on a rational basis (e.g. by giving them a political explanation), it seems fairly unlikely that such accounts will be informative. Can we address them in a more satisfactory way?
John Roosa, PhD Associate Professor of History, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada Tues 29 September, 8 pm Auditorium, Tongersestraat 53 How should the massacres of hundreds of thousands of unarmed Indonesians in 1965-66 be explained? Historians of Indonesia disagree on many points, even on basic facts like the identity of the perpetrators and the victims. Unfortunately, we have very few facts even after 50 years, and a great deal more research remains to be done. This lecture, based on the latest research, presents the general outlines, which are clear enough. The Indonesian Army high command in Jakarta ordered its officers to massacre members of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) and to hide the traces of their crimes.

The perpetrators of the day are interviewed and invited to re-enact their deeds. At first, they are proud of their past and cannot wait to re-enact it in film scenes complete with sets, costumes, fireworks and volunteer victims. However, when film violence becomes entangled with memories, their bluster gradually makes way for feelings of unease and regret. This film is planned in combination with the lecture by John Roosa, PhD about The Indonesian Politicide of 1965-66. See page 16.

Through Oppenheimer’s footage of perpe trators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, as well as the identities of the killers. The documentary focuses on the youngest son, an optome trist named Adi, who decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: he confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. This unprecedented film initiates and bears witness to the collapse of fifty years of silence.

Jan Smeets Pinkpop-baas, Geleen Interviewer: Leon Verdonschot popjournalist, Amsterdam Do 22 oktober, 20.00 uur Aula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 De belangrijkste man achter Pinkpop, het oudste nog bestaande openlucht popfestival ter wereld, is Jan Smeets.
