Houding Europese Unie t.a.v.

What role can the EU play in the conflict in Afghanistan? To what extent should the human rights situation in developing countries influence EU policies with regard to aid and development cooperation with the countries in question? The question of waste disposal in the EU: how can the Union stimulate efforts towards the reduction of domestic and industrial waste and towards the recycling of waste products? How can the member states of the EU cooperate to safeguard the health of young people against mental stress, alcohol abuse, smoking and poor levels of nutrition? What role can schools and educational programmes play?

Speech opening ceremony door Bart van Bruggen, president of the MEP conference The Hague 2010 Your Majesty, honourable mrs. Van Sminia, distinguished guests, honourable committee presidents and delegates, I am sure the majority of you watched the Olympic Games in Vancouver, about one month ago now. The People’s Republic of China won five gold medals. Russia won only three gold medals. The United States nine. And the European Union? We won thirty-one gold medals the last Olympic Games. Isn’t that something to be very proud of? This is not the only thing we, Europeans, can be proud of. We have one currency, we have open borders and we are all here now. All examples of the success of the European Union. In the week that lies ahead of us, all of you will experience the benefits of the European Union yourselves. You will be part of a process, in which you will learn a lot and make friends for the rest of your lives. Participating in the MEP-process has given me the chance to develop myself in an extraordinary way. This, because of the focus on major global issues, and even more because of the amazing people I have met. I am sure that you as well will get to know yourself during this week in a way you could never have imagined. This opportunity is unique, an opportunity only a few Europeans get every year. Whatever you do this week, keep this in mind, and make the most of it. My first MEP-experience was a regional session, about two years ago. I started a journey then. A journey, without a clearly defined goal. My MEP-journey will probably end soon, though, at the same time, this journey never ends. Looking back, I can say the goal has developed itself, but, at the same time, remained the same from the beginning: get the best out of yourself, keep developing yourself as much as you can and make friends all over Europe. Some of you already experienced this in previous MEP-sessions. Other people present in this room have just started their journey. Keep in mind that you define your own goals on this journey, you decide whether it will be successful or not. You are all bright, young people and you will probably be told several times this week that you are the future of Europe. I hope that you, together with a lot of other bright, young people, can indeed play an important role in the future of the European Union, whether it is in science, politics or in another profession. Mahatma Gandhi once said: ‘We need to be the change we wish to see in this world’. Let us be the change we wish to see. That is how we can affect the future of the European Union. Meanwhile, never forget that the MEP is only a game. It is a great game, a game that teaches us a lot. However, we must not lose the connection with the rest of our society. Don’t forget that intellectual skills are not the only thing our society demands. Imagine society like the human body. The brain cannot function properly without a strong body. The brain needs strong legs, arms and shoulders to carry it. In times of globalization and individualization, solidarity is needed more than ever. Coming to an end, I would like to share one more thing. The formal part of this week is important, but not the main goal. It is a way to experience other cultures, to meet new people, to make new friends. Do not forget this during the week. Be ambitious and work hard, but also have fun and make this week into the best week of your life. Thank you very much.

Onderwerpen op de internationale conferentie in Istanbul waren o.a.: - The question of the involvement of the EU in international conflicts. - At the climate conference in Copenhagen Europe’s ambitious plans lost against the more reserved position of countries such as the US and China. How can the EU be more successful in getting its proposals implemented? - How can the EU reduce its dependence on foreign energy sources, notably in Russia? To what extent can nuclear energy and/or other alternative sources of energy provide a solution? - To what extent can/should parents be held legally responsible for the (mis)behaviour of their children? Is this a field where contacts between member states and measures at the EU level could contribute?

Spanish delegation at MEP The Hague First of all we would like to thank all the people and institutions that have provided the means to make this incredible experience possible. However, we also want to show our deepest gratitude to all teachers and last years' students that have guided and supported us from the beginning... Without any of them, this would still be a far-fetched dream. […] Committee meetings We all agree that the committee meetings were really interesting as many different points of view were exposed. In general, everybody participated and the delegate's knowledge about their topic was very high so many interesting things were said. […] General Assembly Personally, besides the final party, this was the best part. The debates turned out to be really exciting and sometimes we really enjoyed the challenge. It was a pleasure to hear some of the fabulous speeches given as well as some very solid arguments on the resolutions which have changed our mind and what we think about everyday topics such as waste recycling. What did really surprise me was how fluent the debates were, as many facts and opinions were explained in very little time.Besides, even though we covered a total of 10 resolutions (!) it was never boring, thanks both to the excellent and original delegates and to the incredibly well guiding presidency. […] Host family and food I believe it was an excellent idea to send us to host families rather than to an hotel because in this we really got to know the Dutch culture. In general, the host families were very kind and friendly. […] Now, if someone asked me why I took part in the MEP, I would just show him the following list: You learn a lot about your topic and the ones of the other resolutions. This is very useful because these topics are always on the news and many times you do not know much about them. You develop very important skills such as speaking in front of an audience. You practise English. You do see the differences after one week. You meet many people from all over Europe. This is one of the most interesting things because you learn a lot about other countries, which sometimes are quite different from yours. You have a great time with the other delegates, no matter what country they come from! You make a lot of new friends which you will never forget thanks to facebook! As you can see, I really recommend other students to take part in the MEP! This has been an incredible experience which I will always remember, not only because of the international session, but also because of the national and the regional ones. In fact, the worst thing is that it has to have an end... Words are not enough to describe this dream made true, you have to live it! Macedonian delegation at MEP The Hague When I was first asked to write a short essay on the experience of my delegation at MEP The Hague 2010, I reluctantly agreed to do so. Faced with the task of transferring all the cherished memories into words, I felt powerless. Indeed, I thought that only the myriad of photos uploaded to the “MEP The Hague 2010” Facebook Group can accurately tell the story of our MEP adventure. Even so, after a week of procrastinating, I am offering you my attempt at summarizing the eventful week. Let me begin by emphasizing how truly honoured I and every head of delegation at the Kloosterkerk felt to meet Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, at the MEP Opening Ceremony. Indeed, her presence marked the fabulous beginning of an even more amazing week; one week during which we all poured ourselves into the resolutions that we created, but also made equally passionate and dedicated friends from all over Europe. The subsequent committee meetings abounded with fervent discussions, intense debates and exchanges of opinions and ideas between the members of our respective committees. As a member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety, it has been an immense challenge and delight for me to work together with bright-minded individuals from all over Europe towards a common strategy for helping the developing nations tackle their problems related to climate change. After the tiring committee meetings that finished at 5 pm, the members of my committee and I, never losing our enthusiasm, would only bring the discussion to a more personal level at one of the abundant cafes at the Plein. Defending our resolutions at the General Assembly was another crucial task for our committees. I can proudly say that the Macedonian delegates actively participated in the GA discussions, took part in numerous debates, attentively followed the speeches, and delivered their own. I myself felt honoured that my committee had commissioned me to deliver the closing speech in favour of our resolution. With a healthy dose of trepidation, I went up to the platform; once I was there, my nervousness vanished and I worded well my arguments in favour of our resolution. Even though it was one of the most debated and fiercely opposed resolutions, due to the collaborative effort of my committee our resolution has been passed. After the official part of MEP The Hague ended, I decided to take a brief moment and discuss this wonderful learning experience with the rest of my delegation. All of us agreed that we were given a unique opportunity to share our views with the European peers. Additionally, the Macedonian delegates felt honoured that the resolutions of our respective committees will be sent to the real EU Parliament. “That means that our voices will be heard, our ideas will be taken into consideration as valuable and worthy.” – one delegate pointed out. Therefore, we would like very much to get feedback on what the real EU Parliament members think about our resolutions. What the members of my delegation and I learned from this MEP experience, was that no matter whether an idea originates from a single individual or group, if it is well-argumented and supported with evidence it may as well influence the policies of large institutions such as the European Union. Finally, MEP is all about socializing with talented individuals from all over Europe. Today, I can proudly say that we have made a friend from every EU member and candidate state; at least one from each country. All of us walked in the shoes of the real EU parliament members for a week; and all of us had swollen feet at the end of that week. This, however, did not stop anyone from dancing the night away on the Saturday farewell party. Hungarian delegation at MEP The Hague Dear Mrs. van Sminia! The whole week in the Hague was just amazing. I and all my delegates have enjoyed it very much. The programs very perfectly organised everything has just worked well. All the host families were great as I am informed. We did not even have problems with the sandwiches for lunch although Hungarians eat hot food for lunch every day.:) All the people were very nice, I still keep in touch with many delegates. The places of the committee meetings were just great, maybe a little bit hard to find but we all have managed. It was just an enormous feeling to be able to sit in the houses of the parliament of Netherlands, we all felt like real representatives. Croation delegation at MEP The Hague Dear Mrs. B.J. van Sminia-Meijerink, Dear Mrs. M. Farahani-Schoonenboom, Almost two weeks have passed since we left Den Haag. We have returned to our routine, doing schoolwork, helping with house chores, meeting our old friends at home... However, we seem unable to stop thinking and talking about the amazing week we have had in The Netherlands. We all spend a significant amount of our time going through the pictures, talking to each other, exchanging videos and reminding ourselves what an extraordinary experience it was! Of course, it is no wonder we had such a great time: we’re young, we’re eager, most of us were in a foreign country for seven days (which is a good enough reason to be excited), we met so many different, wonderful people… But, after reflecting on the whole week, it was obvious to all of us that it wouldn’t have been as remarkable as it was, if there wasn’t for all the people who put so much effort into organizing this session. Everything was exactly as it should be: the schedule was tight enough to keep us busy, but still very well organized so that we had enough free time to see the city, buy some souvenirs, get to know each other and have some fun. Our initial fear of getting lost was immediately eased as we had no problems getting around, thanks to the detailed instructions and the maps of the city we got, and all the amicable people around, always ready to answer any questions we had. Despite our different eating habits, you managed to keep us all full and content. Even though we are usually used to a bigger lunch, there was always enough for everyone, and a plenty to choose from. Thank you for your effort in finding us a place to stay: the host families were fantastic, and it was really a wonderful experience. Thank you for the insight into your culture, which has enriched us and showed us how different and how similar we are. Even the weather was on our side, and it was just the cherry on top of an excellent and highly enjoyable week. I could go on and on thanking you, but the thing is we are probably not even nearly aware of everything that had to be done to organize this MEP session. However, I do have to say that Mrs van Sminia was right. In her speech at the opening ceremony, I remember her saying that that week would be one of the best weeks in our lives, maybe even the best. And it was. Thank you for everything! Yours sincerely, Mia Lorencin, Head of the Croatian Delegation …..........................................................................

Belgian delegation at MEP The Hague 2010 The Opening Ceremony in the Cloister Church was really nice. Mainly because we had a very special guest, Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands. The opening speech held by the President was amazingly beautiful! The speeches held by the heads of delegation from each country were instructive and interesting, just because every speech was totally different and specific for each country. After the opening ceremony we went to a school in The Hague for the teambuilding. We played games like cluedo and other fun games to get to know each other, which was very pleasant and hilarious. […] Committee meetings Our committee meetings were very social, productive and fun. With the diversity of many different European opinions it is a little bit more difficult to reach a consensus, but everything is possible. We’ve made 10 resolutions which are all well-considered, smart, and progressive. And that’s something to be proud of! […] General Assembly Friday and Saturday we had General Assembly in the the Dutch House of Representatives. That was really special. The President of the House held an enjoyable speech, we even had time to ask her some questions. […] The Belgian delegation unanimous agreed that MEP The Hague was one of the most special weeks in our lives. We have met so many people, we have made lots of friends and we are still keeping in touch, that’s the first thing that is so great about MEP. The second thing that is so great about MEP is the fact that we all had an amazing experience and we have accomplished so much. If I have to continue to mention all the things that are great about MEP, than I’ll have to type 100.000.000 pages! And for that we are very, very, very grateful! Thank you very much! Finnish delegation at MEP Istanbul Dear Mrs. Anna van Sminia-Meijerink, secretary general of the MEP Foundation, First of I want to start of by saying that the Model European Parliament 2010 in Istanbul was one of the most amazing experiences in my life and the rest of the Finnish delegation concurs with me. We had such a great time and we want nothing more than to be able to do it again. The atmosphere of co-operation and open-mindedness during the whole week was great. Everyone got along and everyone accepted each others cultures and we learned so much. I would like to point out that everyone getting along so well would not have been possible without all the help and support of the organizers who organized everything so well. Because of that we as delegates could really just sit back and enjoy the ride. Also this aspect of not having to worry about practically anything other then the committee work made it so easy to get to know each other and have fun. The wisely chosen delegates also made this week great. […] The Opening Ceremony at Sait Halim Paşa Yalısı was absolutely wonderful. The location was great and the ceremony hall was so pretty and comfortable. All the speeches were great and inspiring, I will never forget many of them. The lunch after the ceremony was delicious and the atmosphere of great things to come was in the air. It was so much fun! Also getting to see the rest of the building and how beautiful it was, was a great experience. I have to say that the location of the opening ceremony could not have been better and luckily the weather was so perfect. […] The committees were great and the committee work went very well. The presidents for each committee worked really hard to make everyone’s voice heard and to make sure everything went smoothly. The committee presidents were great and well chosen. The subjects on which we made our resolutions were also very good and we enjoyed working with our topics very much. In conclusion I would like to thank everyone for making the MEP Istanbul 2010 such a memorable and great experience for me and the other delegates. Thank You. I would like to thank you Mrs. Anna van Sminia-Meijerink, secretary general of the MEP Foundation, for this great experience. Sincerely, Alexandra Järnefelt, Head of the Finnish Delegation ….......................................................................... French delegation at MEP Istanbul […] Firstly, I would like to say that we all felt very warmly welcomed by the MEF Schools and its students. We did not have to worry about anything, as everything was perfectly planned, and if we had any questions there was always someone ready to help. contributed into making us feel important and taken care of. We believe that this is primordial in making us assume our roles with more conviction. […] Secondly, concerning our host families: although vastly different, they were all extremely hospitable and attentive during the limited time we had together. They were always ready to help in any situation, notably in the evenings. […] Thirdly, concerning the MEP itself: it was most definitely a very interesting experience that made us more open-minded and raised our awareness to the EU and its major issues. Being our first real debate experience, it allowed us to share our opinions with other EU delegates and defend them, in order to reach a common interest serving the well-fare of all countries. Another amazing aspect of the MEP is that it not only allowed us to improve our English, but also made it possible for us to meet people from all over Europe, understand them and their cultures, and develop precious and hopefully long-lasting friendships. […] We would have liked to see it a little more, but are aware that the MEP is not a sight-seeing organisation! To sum up, we shall all keep plenty of good memories, useful lessons and an increased awareness of current events and problems. We shall treasure these for a very long time. Yours sincerely, Emilia Maduro-Vollmer, Head of the French Delegation ….......................................................................... Italian delegation at MEP Istanbul Participating in the international MEP session held in Istanbul has been an amazing experience. […] It has made me and my fellow delegation members understand how it is possible to go beyond the controversies and divisions in order to find an agreement. […] During this week it was possible to see […] Greek, Cypriot and Turkish delegates joking and having lunch together, all cultural differences forgotten. Furthermore the issues we had to confront ourselves with were not about juvenile problems. We discussed about worldwide matters that are usually dealt with by adults and we noticed how our uninterested and -at times- innocent approach to these problems can produce more effective solutions. The debates both in the GA and the committee meetings were stimulating and widened our knowledge about very important issues. The organization has been excellent. We always felt welcome and whenever we had any problem help was given us. The families that have been hosting us were kind and very hospitable and we think we behaved in a respectful way throughout the whole week. In conclusion this experience, even though it lasted just one week, will be a milestone in all our lives. The people we met, the friends we made, the things we learnt will always be in ourselves. We experienced first hand democracy and this in the long run could turn out to be the best weapon we have in life. German delegation at MEP Istanbul […] At this MEP session not only the 27 member states took part but also the three candidate countries: Turkey, Croatia and FYROM. As all of the member state delegates, the delegates from the candidate countries were highly involved in the committee meetings and did very well in the general assembly. All of them represented their country as if they were members of the EU, a fact that impressed everyone at this years session. […] The working atmosphere in all committees was creative and productive, new ideas were found and the delegates experienced how hard it is to find solutions for problems that are of great importance to the European Union but also fit to the policy of each member state. Besides the special knowledge that every delegate gained through dealing with problems of the EU, the delegates made friends with people from all over Europe, friendships which aren’t affected of borders or cultural differences. At the teambuilding morning, which took place during a walk in the world famous area of Sultanahmet in Istanbul in which the committees passed many famous sights like the Hagia Sofia or the blue mosque supported the cultural exchange between the delegates. After a week in Istanbul every delegate went home with impressions of other countries, with new friendships and with unforgettable memories. These include the opening ceremony at a wonderful Ottoman palace, the General Assembly or the spectacular dinner at the banks of the Bosporus. At one of the highlights of the week, the cultural night at the MEF auditorium in which many well known artists which performed music and dancing pieces and brought the Turkish culture closer to the delegates and teachers. […] As we had to say goodbye to each other at the closing ceremony dinner, everyone’s face looked sad, nobody wanted to leave. Working on something that has great importance to yourself makes yourself feel more responsible. That’s why MEP’s are so successful and why the students like to participate and put a lot of effort into the work in the committees: Everyone feels responsible for something that is real. Compared to the normal school life, that’s what makes MEP’s special and unforgettable events. As head of the German delegation I would like to thank Mrs. Anna van Sminia and the MEP team, the MEF teachers and students who made the work in the committees possible and the host families which welcomed the delegates at their homes with great hospitality and to everyone else who made this event unforgettable. Adrian Reiners, head of the German delegation ….......................................................................... Luxembourgish delegation at MEP Istanbul […] During this amazing week we […] were given for the first time in our lives the feeling that also teenagers can interact in important political decisions. […] Therefore we came back home, full of enthusiasm and convinced of having achieved something very important and impressive. During the committee sessions we were all doing our best to create, in cooperation with our dear colleagues, useful and capable resolutions. Working together with so many different nations was a new experience for each of us, but certainly it was an experience that will last for a lifetime. […] This Model European Parliament showed us, what kind of great association the EU is. Diplomacy and respect are the way to success.

MEP brought us to a country whose architecture and culture is widely influenced by the Asian way of life and we had a warm welcome by our host families. We saw a lot of the oriental culture, the Gran Bazaar for instance. All those visits will stay in our minds, saved for ever, as wonderful memories. We tried to take as many pictures as possible, but living the moment is still irreplaceable. To conclude, during MEP we probably spent the best week of our lives in Istanbul. Being representatives of our native country made us so proud and therefore we were also encouraged to take it seriously and did our best in writing the resolutions. We hope we will have the opportunity to represent our small country once again on an international MEP session! We wanted to thank you for this unforgettable opportunity and the great organization! Yours sincerely, Jeanne Vervier, Lynn Warisse, Michel Breyer, Maxime Fassotte, Tom Reuland, Luxembourgish delegation …......................................................................................... Latvian delegation (represented by Finland) at MEP Istanbul […] During this week, I felt a strong sense of European community, chatting with people from all across my beloved continent, sharing ideas in different languages and participating in bilateral learning. Although English is no doubt my best foreign language, I felt surprisingly comfortable chatting in German and Swedish as well. I even spoke Russian with some of the delegates! I enjoyed this week for it showed me that despite the strong nationalism some regions of Europe are experiencing, I saw a handful of young bright people who faced no problems in truly comprehending each others’ origin and opinions. The committee work we took part in was a great experience. In my committee, the one on Economic and Monetary Affairs, we learned to reach compromises in larger groups, as well as preparing proposals in smaller ones. I was very delighted that committee meetings were open to debate; everybody got to voice out his/her opinion. There was a sense of a small community that we developed over the week that we worked together, which I really loved. […] The General Assembly during the last two days was absolutely magnificent. I got to challenge ideas of other committees by questioning their agenda and motives, and got the chance to defend our resolution as well. Because the work we conducted during the GA was so crucial, I really enjoyed influencing and convincing people to support our resolution. I was very delighted to see our resolution pass with a majority of votes. […] This Model European Parliament session was my first one and, odds are, my last one as well, for we Finns do not usually get to participate more than once. Still, I would like to thank you for this amazing experience, an exquisite week and the work you do for a better Europe. I find it truly inspiring that there are people who believe in European integration to such an extent and do great work in favour of it. On behalf of the Latvian delegation and myself personally, I would like to wish you all the best in your future endeavour for a better future and a better Europe. Romanian delegation at MEP Istanbul Distinguished Mrs. van Sminia-Meijerink, As I stated in my speech at the Opening Ceremony, in my opinion it is very important to inspire a sense of active citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young Europeans and to involve them in shaping the Union's future. That is why the Model European Parliament should be considered a very useful and important project on which I am very proud to have participated. […] My host family was absolutely great and they treated me as a member of their own family, they even invited me to come again in Istanbul and stay at their place. […] Although the resolution of my committee didn’t pass, I am sure that all of us had learned many things from each other during this session because no movie, TV report or book can substitute for what becomes possible when people actually meet and listen to each other because overcoming of misunderstandings and prejudices about different nationalities and cultures through personal conversations not only brings one closer to the other person’s culture, but also allows an entirely new view of one’s own culture. I am confident that many innovative and helpful resolutions had been written and hopefully, in the near future, we will find some of today delegates in important European institutions. I have to congratulate you, honorable Mrs. van Sminia-Meijerink, as well as all the people that helped you with this session because you did a great job. […] Thank you so much for making all of this possible and for giving us the opportunity to take part in this wonderful project.
