Research resumee and publications, 2000-2010 Dr. B.A. (Beatrice) de Graaf Research focus Beatrice de Graaf studied History and German Literature & Culture in Utrecht and Bon (Germany), 1994-1998. She graduated cum laude. From 1999 onwards she conducted her PhD-research on the interplay of non-governmental groups and national security politics, notably regarding East-West relations. She examined the effects of political infiltration attempts by the Warsaw Pact against the Netherlands and analysed the impact of peace and church activities on Cold War antagonisms, based on insights from the New Cold War History. This thesis raised considerable public and academic interest. She was appointed Assistant Professor at the Institute for History (Utrecht) in 2004, and continued teaching and research into intelligence activities in the Netherlands and in Germany afterwards. She analysed how the Dutch intelligence community reassessed its threats and interests in the transition to the post-1989 world. Apart from this, the way church and society interacted during the postwar period, also attracted her interest and amounted to a monography on the history of the Theological University in Kampen. Since 2005 she shifted her attention to security politics and activities of western agencies and started collecting material on political violence and terrorism as a security threat. Between 2004 and 2009 she organised several conferences on intelligence, national security and (counter-)terrorism from an international and historical perspective, this resulted in two edited volumes on the history of terrorism (cf. below). In the Summer of 2006, together with Prof. dr. Duco Hellema she launched a research network on the ‘mystery of the seventies: international progress or crisis of democracy, 1965-1985’. In June 2007 she joined the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism studies in The Hague, where she is currently working on several (international) research projects relating to (counter-)terrorism and security politics. She raised funds and supervises a database on ‘Terrorism, Counterterrorism and Radicalization’ research, a project on ‘Kenniskaarten internationaal terrorisme’, and an in house library for the Centre. She started to combine her historical research with a theoretical discourse and social constructivist perspective on national security. In February 2009 her vidi project on ‘The making of a national security state in the West, from 1945 until present’ also took off. In this research project she applies her model of performative power of security measures to key moments in the development of national security politics (focusing on counterterrorism and counterinsurgency) in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. She supervises two PhD-students, in close cooperation with the Department for History of Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute for Military History. In July 2009, she was appointed associate professor at the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism/Leiden University. In January 2010 her monography on ‘Counterterrorism as performance’, on the performative power of ct-measures in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and the United States in the seventies was published in Dutch. She is currently working, amongst other things, on a small project about ‘Dangerous Women’, based on the question how counterterrorists, the media and society at large react and respond to (alleged) female terrorists (book forthcoming Spring 2011); a monography on ‘The Performative Power of Terrorism Trials’ (as part of a research theme group sponsored and hosted by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Science from September 2010 – July 2011);

and a study on the genealogy of National Security in the Netherlands, from the 19th century to the present.
